I just had my dad do a full root on my evo just for the wireless tether. i really love the options that have opened up and want to pursue them. i want to be able to install boot animation, lock bars, and themes. the problem i am having is i really dont know where to start. ive done alot of research on things but doesnt really tell me exactly what i need to do. i have been told that i need to get a new rom to be able to use custom themes and lockbars and stuff like that. with that i was told i need to do a nanoid backup. so what i am asking from you guys (the expertts with alot of patience for noobies is step be step instructions on what i need to do. i dont even know how to do a nanoid backup. tell me what actions i need to take and what apps i will need to make all this happen. please help me all the other forums tell me is stop being a noob are use the search feature. i just dont think other peoples posts are exact;y what i am asking for so please give me help so i wont be such a noob and have a custom look on my evo.
I'll help you start by flashing a custom recovery which will allow for nandroid backup, data wipes, and flashing custom roms.
1. Download Rom Manager from the Market
2. Open Rom Manager and flash ClockworkMod recovery, which is the first option in Rom Manager. You can use this recovery, which should be installed if your father ran UnRevoked 3.2 to root your EVO.
3. However, I recommend scrolling down to the bottom of Rom Manager and flashing the alternate recovery, Amon Ra. This is the one I prefer to use to flash my roms and whatever else.
4. Grab Quick Boot from the market for easy reboot into recovery or you can just power off then hold vol down + power on to boot into HBOOT. From HBOOT, you can scroll to select recovery, which should put you into Amon Ra.
5. In recovery, you should see Backup/Restore option. Click this and do a nandroid backup. Let it run through until it states completed.
6. Return to main recovery menu, and goto wipe. Select wipe data/factory reset, cache and dalvik cache. You can do each wipe twice just to be on the safe, if you like.
7. Once nandroid and full wipe done, you can select USB-MS to connect your SD card to your PC to load a custom rom onto the root of your card. Once loaded, just disconnect the SD card by hitting power button and return to main recovery menu.
7. If your custom rom is on the SD card root, you should see the rom zip file when you select flash zip from card. Scroll to the rom and select it. Let the rom flash process complete and then reboot the phone.
8. This should take possibly 3-5 minutes to completely load the custom rom onto your phone.
9. Hopefully, everything worked out and the phone boots into the custom rom's homescreen or handsfree setup.

Hit up the development forum and check out all the roms. Look at the screenshots and features. When you find one you like, grab it. Check out Fresh 3.3 and Myn's Warm twopointtwo. I've used those both in the past. Those both have Sense and Myn's ROM is already themed (and looks nice in my opinion). Themes are flashed the same way as roms and the descriptions will tell you if they're Sense-compatible.
Remember to make nandroid backups frequently. Find a rom, get it set up to your liking, nandroid, and then get another rom and do it all over again until you decide on one.

choice of rom is up to you, most you'll see will be 2.2 which you'll want for full flash support, to be able to install themes you will NEED and (deodexed) rom. Look for deodexed roms, and there are plenty. A lot of themes will be flashable zips which you install the same way you install a rom (through recovery-install zip from sdcard-choose zip from sdcard).

Thanks you guys! I sorta figured out how to apply themes using the recovery screen after boot up, but it caused the screen to go black HAHA. But anyways, I couldn't find a definitive answer to what I was looking for. I will check out the deodexed roms, thanks!
I one more EXTREMELY important thing about themes, do wipe cache and dalvic twice, but DO NOT WIPE DATA. That is probably why your screen went black. Eithe that or the rom was not de odexed

every rom has a kernel. It's only if your wanting to overclock etc you would want setcpu and maybe different custom kernel

You'll have to install the recover img. Use Eris Master Application for rooting and installing recovery. When you're ready to go into recovery, boot up the phone while holding the Up volume key. Then select Restore/Backup and do nand backup.
2. Put Senseable on the root of your sd card. Not in any folders or anything, just put the zip directly into your sd card. Then go into recovery (up on the volume button and the power button) and click wipe data/factory and dalvik cache. Then choose flash from zip and select your rom. Then hit the down volume button to go back into the menu's and select reboot system now. If you need more help just lemme know.

Let me try to answer your questions as best as I can:
1. A ROM is essentially the operating system of the phone. When you flash (install) a new ROM, it's like installing a new version of Windows or Mac OS X or Linux or what have you.
2. A Recovery Image is like a separate partition on your phone dedicated for back ups and the obvious one recovery among other things. I'm using RA 1.6.2 but there are other recovery images out there. I suggest just sticking with RA (other members might agree with me or not. I'm no expert).
3. I believe the Root Image is the update.zip file that you will see in those guides that I referred to. If this is the case, then all it is is a ROM that you will flash that gives you root access (the core folders and settings) on your phone.
Try and look for the Rooting FAQ. It's somewhere around here. Best of luck to you.

i understand there are a lot of new faces here all the time but in the same respect you should at least look over the forums before starting to ask questions. Literally all of the OPs answers are sticky'd at the very top of the the dev section.
I've said it before and Ill say it again, I lurked a long time and read a lot of information before posting any types of questions at all...call me old fashioned but I think you should at least have a bearing of the situation before you start spouting off the most basic questions about rooting or installing custom ROMs (i.e. "

Anyone have any good suggestions for a rom for HTC - Mytouch 4g? I am pretty much a n00b even though I manage to pull a complete ultimate true root and s=off lol.
i have the original tmobile stock rom though, is there a just Android 2.2 or Android 2.3 Vanilla rom for HTC mytouch 4g?!
I've seen EvilZ and Ice galicier , but I am not sure which one to go about .

Search the dev section for nightly CM7, Its very vanilla-ish gingerbread and very stable btw, some pros?...improved battery life, open to customization, overall a better looking ui, runs silky smooth, and the kernel supports oc up to 1.5

1. Regarding how stable it is..its super stablr considering its still an alpha and i trust it enough to use it as my daily driver (i need 100% reliability and the phone has never let me down). Only known bugs are qik not working (and its a 2.3 compatibility issue rather than a rom issue) and you can use tango instead, ffc has a reverted x-axis effect xD..., mms might be blurry (which is fixed by changin the ua undr mms settings) and some may have other bugs i have not yet noticed
2. Your current 2.5 cwm will not work with gb, you will need to flash any 3.xxx version to install cm7. Cwm is designed to do backups of ur current working system and can be restored in the events of ur phone acting up (i.e bootloops or major issues...) although its also used to easily install .zip files (cm7 is a rom contained in .zip file and will need to be installes via recovery), its used also to wipe the system cache, dalvik cache and/or full wipes in the events of issues.

Thats the nightly thread, you will have a "nightly" update you can flash thru recovery
4. If u go to cm7 you will have to (must) do a full wipe. Download titanium backup and back up ur existing apps and data (dont wanna lose ur angry birds progress), once cm7 is up just download tit bcup again and you'll have ur data back.

one question at a time, bro.
1)the CM7 Nightlies are "Fairly" stable, though they do have bugs, as they are not fully complete (then again, no rom really is devoid of bugs and things to improve).
2)as for flashing CWM a second time, sometimes the recovery doesnt stick and when you boot into recovery, you will still go to the stock recovery. The second flash of CWM should fix this, and you should go to the CWM screen.
3) The purpose of CWM is to flash the various ROMs you'll find in the Development Section of this area. It also allows you to create nandroid backups, which will allow you to restore your phone to a specific state in time if something goes wrong or something (also helps to flash back to a rom without having to reinstall everything, which takes forever)
4)to flash a gingerbread (either CM7 or otherwise) you'll need to flash the CWM 3 to your phone manually, using the methods laid out in several threads in the Dev section. then you'll need to flash the rom, plus the Gapps for that rom (google apps like gmail, market, etc)
5)and yes, flashing a new rom will wipe all the data f(apps, accounts, call and text logs, etc) from the previous rom the previous (or youll need to do so before flashing). Now you see why you make nandroid backups also, using a backup application like titanium or MyBackup can make that process much simpler.

Okay, so I have Rom Manager Preimum that is 3.0.0.7 and since I flashed it currently, so CWM is 2.5.1.2 .
and I need CWM 3.x?
Regarding CWM 3.x? theres ClockworkMod 3.0.0.5 and clockwork-3-20110116-MT4G.img .
Which one of the above CWM 3.x, is better to use? Also, they are in .img format, so how would I go about flashing it?

And yes, you are right. All roms have flaws, they all need to be worked out . But, this tmobile rom is just a bit annoying .

well, Im running a Desire HD port (gorillaSense), so my rom has that feature, but I havent used CM7 in a little while. However, if you sync your contacts to google instead of t-mobile, youll have all of them no matter what rom you use, no matter if it has t-mobile contacts or sim card contacts or anything.
and yeah, the t-mobile rom is annoying, thats why I got off it as soon as I could and never looked back. Personally I prefer the Sense ROMs, but I can see the merits of the CM and AOSP ROMs too, its personal preference.

K, so i checked the settings on the contact application and you can only export your stored contacts to the SD card, you are able to import from SIM but not to export to SIM. Like the post above stated though, as long as you are on an android phone you will have your contacts synced
OK so first off I want to apologize, I am a noob. Im on many other differedt types of forums and I know n00bs are universally hated. So bear with me.

My phone is permarooted, and now im looking to put a custom rom on. My brother permarooted it for me.
OK I know you guys are gonna say omgz read all the info on the site it's all here. I went to the android dev forum and there are sooooooo many builds I don't even know where to begin. I know none of the cm mods are 'stable' yet. But surely some more then others, no? What are the differences between 6, 6.1, and 7? Any reccomendations? I will be attempting this tomorrow.
If anyone can give me some pointers, point me in the right direction, newb friendly teks.

If you like stock android, I would highly recommend cyanogen mod 7. It turned my mt4g into a speed demon. And it is stable enough to a daily driver.
If you like sense, ( why would anyone) then I'd recommend the ice glacier rom, it is close to stock but with alot of bloatware removed.

"ROM Manager" is an app (search the Market). Clockwork Recovery is installed via ROM Manager (do it two or three times, sometimes it won't "stick" right after you are rooted).

This is done from Clockwork Recovery. You can either run ROM Manager and choose "Reboot to recovery" or power the phone down then power back up while holding volume down. There will be a backup menu (nandroid). Make a backup (it saves on your SD card).

Search the forum. Sorry, I'm running a ROM that doesn't require recovery 3.x. Once you find the recovery image you need to flash it via adb or directly from a Terminal Emulator app on the phone. Usually flash recovery <your_recovery_img> or via adb in fastboot mode fastboot flash recovery <your_recovery_img> You can also perform a full (SYSTEM) wipe in recovery mode.

DL the ROM, place the zip on your SD card. Reboot into recovery (should be there already after doing a wipe in step 3) and pick "Install zip from SD card". Scroll to your ROM's zip, select it, confirm, watch the magic happen.

I don't use a CM ROM on this phone but did on my G1. Search the CM site or the forums here. CM ships "bare android", aka the AOSP (Android Open Source Project). Things Google adds (Gmail, Calendar, Navigate, etc) can not ship with CM due to copyright. You can, however, download and re-install them (since they came with your phone anyhow).
I suggest you read things thoroughly and treat everything like you will brick your shiny new toy before ever attempting it. Make sure you're willing to spend $450 retail on a new phone if you screw up. The first time through any of this is NOT for the faint of heart, and you cannot be overly cautious.
You'll probably get a lot of flames of "OMG DONT DO ANYTHING YOU DIDNT SEARCH AND READ", but good luck. Just seriously, be sure to read everything at least three times before doing it. It gets easier once you've been doing it for a few years, but the first trip....It's a deep rabbit hole
Hey guys, I just wanted to share my experience so far. I can't post on the MIUI page because I don't have enough posts, so I'll share here for anyone interested.
For anyone wanting to try MIUI for the DX, here's my experience, some tips, and suggestions.
-Beware, installing or trying to install ANY ROM may brick your phone. although it's very rare and unlikely to be unable to find a solution to problems, it can and has happened. so take caution and read instructions and so-forth carefully.
Some history of my DX. I soft-bricked my phone back in the early months of the DX trying to deodex it to install themes. It was stuck on M logo for 2 days before i learned enough from scratch to find out what an SBF was, where to find it, and how to flash my phone back to stock. Ever since then these nice folk on XDA-developers forums and other droid forums have helped me successfully mod my phone many times, through Q&A, detailed instructions, and a little luck.
I've rooted my phone using the command method, Z4Root, and several other processes. Some were hard to figure out, some soft-bricked my phone, most were easy as pie. I'm on a Z4Root atm.
The first successful ROM I installed was GUMMY-JAR. I liked it, it was good to me. nothing like the comprehensive ROMs out now though.
Then I jumped to Liberty 1.5, Liberty x.x etc... Liberty was awesome, but was still basically Froyo with advanced options. I loved it.
Now, just today, I've installed MIUI. And let me tell you, its amazing!
For anyone running Froyo Liberty ROMs, I believe that you can install MIUI right over the top. I didn't think it was going to work, as I hadn't seen anyone mention if it did or not over the top of Liberty 1.5.

You MUST be rooted, and be running FROYO, NOT GB! You must also have the Droid X bootstrapper.
I won't give instructions, as I'm not qualified to do so. But I can tell you what I did from Liberty 1.5. MAKE SURE TO MAKE A BACKUP FIRST! 1) I downloaded the MIUI ROM from the above XDA post to my SD card on my phone. 2) I clicked 'bootstrap recovery' on the DX bootstrapper app, then 'reboot recovery.' My phone booted into clockwork recovery mode. 3) wiped data/factory reset. 4) cleared cache. 5) install from SD Card. 6) install MIUI.zip i downloaded from the link i posted above. let it run it's course. rebooted. DONE.
It's really that easy if you are running the DX stock Froyo kernal.
Keep in mind with MIUI, it does NOT auto-sync your Google account. you need to go into the options>>accounts/sync and add your Google account. You can then re-install apps from your backup or just re-download them. Make sure you've synced your contacts with your Google account so they will be there when you add your Google account.
Some thoughts on MIUI...
There is NO STOCK APP DRAWER. I recommend ADW launcher or Launcher PRO. The MIUI launcher inst bad, but it's like iOS in that there's no app drawer. It's just a bunch of screens with all your app icons like an iPhone.
You can download theme's and customize themes through settings>>personal>>theme manager. MIUI allows you to change fonts, boot animation, boot audio, lock-screen style, status bar, icons, launcher, wallpapers, text style, dialer style etc. There's tons of pre-made packages, but you can also change them all individually and create one you like best. You can do all of this directly from the settings menu including looking up new themes, downloading them, and applying them.
MIUI is running on 2.3.4 GB. So it wont say 2.2 anymore after you install. (I believe the kernal is still Froyo though? Please correct me if I am wrong)
I really hope this helps some of you newbies. I am thankful for all of you that have made posts like this that I have found useful in the past.
Note- some people are having issues installing MIUI. They are getting bootlooped on the M logo for some reason. I have no idea why this is, it worked perfectly for me first try. Just remember to follow the instructions on the ROM page, and that you are running the correct version of Android. You shouldn't get a boot-loop if you do so.

i have a question.... and this question is what will decide if i keep this or go back to liberty gingerbread....
how the hell do i flash anything.. i can't even install clockwork mod without getting bootloops.... and i'd love to flash certain apps onto this.... but if this can not be done i will have to go back.... the only thing going into recovery does is use the retarded original recovery... and that is a big deal.. if i ruin my phone on the go and need to pullup a backup i can not do this with this rom and i will end up phoneless until i can get to a computer to sbf

What exactly are you asking? "Flashing" is the process of basically overwriting your current Android OS with an Android OS SBF. If you are trying to install MIUI, you cannot do it with Gingerbread installed on your phone. "You MUST be on CyanogenMod 7 or .340 Froyo to flash this rom!" (MIUI)
If you want to install MIUI, i think the best bet would be SBF flashing to stock DX 2.2 .340 FROYO, re-rooting, then using the DX boot-strapper to boot into recovery. Then installing the MIUI .zip from SDcard in the recovery menu. Everything should work fine after that. Rmember you CANNOT go into recovery using DX boot-strapper once this ROM is installed. you CAN go into recovery with this ROM using ROM-manager. This is what I have experienced so far, and what others have said also.
no.. i already have the rom installed... i just want to be able to go into recovery without needing to be booted up.
i'm trying to install some zips through clockwork such as the old blur camera and a few other things... i will install rom manager and see how it goes from there... i love the UI of this rom but as far as being comfortable and stable.. liberty gingerbread has my vote as of now
i've cleared my cache and data several times and i get force closes alot. and this is a clean install coming straight after an SBF.
with liberty gingerbread i had the ability to set it so every phone reboot, even if a battery pull, would boot directly into clockwork mod.. making it easy for me in case i installed a zip that would get me into bootloop
Hmm, sorry mate, I dunno what to tell ya. Try looking aroudn forums or startign a new thread. someone more knowledgable than you or me will help you out.

You need to install Rom Manager, and select flash Clockwork Recovery. Make sure you select Droid X (2nd Init). Then you can reboot into recovery with Rom Manager :-D

but the problem is that i would like to be able to go into recovery without having to do it through an app... i'd like to make it so every reboot (including battery pull) makes it boot into recovery. thats how i had liberty gingerbread doing it... if not.. i can live with it.. i'll just be a little more careful on what i'm installing
Just wanted to chime in about MIUI rom, I just flashed it yesterday and am ABSOLUTELY loving it thus far. I had no trouble at all installing the rom what-so-ever. I used ROM Manager to do the whole thing: downloaded newest ver. of MIUI, backup current ROM, wipe data and dalvik. Let it run its course and it rebooted and was up and running in no time flat!
Allright.. i decided to start using a custom rom, which will be CM9. but because of soo mutch information on this website i dont fully understand anymore what to do, and because im still a noob, i cant post in the original thread of CM9.
I have a Red lens Motorola Defy MB525, found out with catlog that i got the bayer camera module , non branded, stock froyo.
Rooted my defy
nandroid backup with 2nd init , made a copy to my laptop to be completely save.
did backup the apps with titanium backup
also have the app battery calibration so i can fix my battery after the custom rom.
i will write the custom rom when my battery is on atleast 50 percent, so it will not die.
So what do i have to do next?
download the correct ROM, it will come as a .zip
copy it to your sdcard, reboot to 2nd init recovery,
factory reset, and wipe dalvik cache from advanced menu.
then in recovery choose install zip from sdcard, choose your ROM.zip, install,
reboot, it will take pretty long until it boots first time because system is rebuilding the dalvik. (~5min)
Wow , thats sounds way more simple then i can find on this site.

Maybe you should try multiboot first just to be on the safe side.
what is multiboot and how can i do that?
Multiboot is basically the possibility to have two or more different ROMs (e.g. CM7 and CM9) installed at the same time and when you boot up you can choose which ROM you want to use. But it is a bit complicated and it wouldn't work with stock Froyo as one of the ROMs I think.
More suggestions? You should also download the latest gapps from http://goo.im/gapps and put the zip on your sd card as well. After wiping and installing the CM9 Nightly from sd go to install zip from sd again and choose the gapps .zip. After that you can reboot the system.
The gapps are the Google Apps (i.e. Play Store and some more) and without them you can't even setup your Google Account, download apps, use Gmail etc.

That would be good. Try it out and see if it suits your requirements..There are many ROM's for froyo kernel. You can try those and see which suits you best.
