You'll have to install the recover img. Use Eris Master Application for rooting and installing recovery. When you're ready to go into recovery, boot up the phone while holding the Up volume key. Then select Restore/Backup and do nand backup.
2. Put Senseable on the root of your sd card. Not in any folders or anything, just put the zip directly into your sd card. Then go into recovery (up on the volume button and the power button) and click wipe data/factory and dalvik cache. Then choose flash from zip and select your rom. Then hit the down volume button to go back into the menu's and select reboot system now. If you need more help just lemme know.

ok so a few more questions....
1. What is a ROM, recovery image, and root image???
2. im guessing i gotta root my phone before i can do a nandroid backup???

that is correct

I used this guide to help me root my Eris about a month ago, but it is still up to date:
[Walkthrough] From stock (1.5) to rooted 2.1 (update - new link)
h t t p://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=647707
OR
You can try this application by ECLIPS3 and Jamezelle which does the same rooting process in a few simple clicks:

Let me try to answer your questions as best as I can:
1. A ROM is essentially the operating system of the phone. When you flash (install) a new ROM, it's like installing a new version of Windows or Mac OS X or Linux or what have you.
2. A Recovery Image is like a separate partition on your phone dedicated for back ups and the obvious one recovery among other things. I'm using RA 1.6.2 but there are other recovery images out there. I suggest just sticking with RA (other members might agree with me or not. I'm no expert).
3. I believe the Root Image is the update.zip file that you will see in those guides that I referred to. If this is the case, then all it is is a ROM that you will flash that gives you root access (the core folders and settings) on your phone.
Try and look for the Rooting FAQ. It's somewhere around here. Best of luck to you.

i understand there are a lot of new faces here all the time but in the same respect you should at least look over the forums before starting to ask questions. Literally all of the OPs answers are sticky'd at the very top of the the dev section.
I've said it before and Ill say it again, I lurked a long time and read a lot of information before posting any types of questions at all...call me old fashioned but I think you should at least have a bearing of the situation before you start spouting off the most basic questions about rooting or installing custom ROMs (i.e. "
1. What is a ROM, recovery image, and root image???")
that is all. best of luck with your root experience, youll never ever want to use anything stock again.

[Q] Im new and lost

I just had my dad do a full root on my evo just for the wireless tether. i really love the options that have opened up and want to pursue them. i want to be able to install boot animation, lock bars, and themes. the problem i am having is i really dont know where to start. ive done alot of research on things but doesnt really tell me exactly what i need to do. i have been told that i need to get a new rom to be able to use custom themes and lockbars and stuff like that. with that i was told i need to do a nanoid backup. so what i am asking from you guys (the expertts with alot of patience for noobies is step be step instructions on what i need to do. i dont even know how to do a nanoid backup. tell me what actions i need to take and what apps i will need to make all this happen. please help me all the other forums tell me is stop being a noob are use the search feature. i just dont think other peoples posts are exact;y what i am asking for so please give me help so i wont be such a noob and have a custom look on my evo.
I'll help you start by flashing a custom recovery which will allow for nandroid backup, data wipes, and flashing custom roms.
1. Download Rom Manager from the Market
2. Open Rom Manager and flash ClockworkMod recovery, which is the first option in Rom Manager. You can use this recovery, which should be installed if your father ran UnRevoked 3.2 to root your EVO.
3. However, I recommend scrolling down to the bottom of Rom Manager and flashing the alternate recovery, Amon Ra. This is the one I prefer to use to flash my roms and whatever else.
4. Grab Quick Boot from the market for easy reboot into recovery or you can just power off then hold vol down + power on to boot into HBOOT. From HBOOT, you can scroll to select recovery, which should put you into Amon Ra.
5. In recovery, you should see Backup/Restore option. Click this and do a nandroid backup. Let it run through until it states completed.
6. Return to main recovery menu, and goto wipe. Select wipe data/factory reset, cache and dalvik cache. You can do each wipe twice just to be on the safe, if you like.
7. Once nandroid and full wipe done, you can select USB-MS to connect your SD card to your PC to load a custom rom onto the root of your card. Once loaded, just disconnect the SD card by hitting power button and return to main recovery menu.
7. If your custom rom is on the SD card root, you should see the rom zip file when you select flash zip from card. Scroll to the rom and select it. Let the rom flash process complete and then reboot the phone.
8. This should take possibly 3-5 minutes to completely load the custom rom onto your phone.
9. Hopefully, everything worked out and the phone boots into the custom rom's homescreen or handsfree setup.
WoW
WoW i dont even know where to begin on telling you how big of a help you was, you answered my post exactly how i needed it answered for me to understand it and be able to do it......thank you soooo much
I do have an additional question to this, what custom rom should I use? Will it have 2.2? And are there tutorials how to install themes? Do I need to have sense to install these themes?
I really appreciate your assistance!!!
Hit up the development forum and check out all the roms. Look at the screenshots and features. When you find one you like, grab it. Check out Fresh 3.3 and Myn's Warm twopointtwo. I've used those both in the past. Those both have Sense and Myn's ROM is already themed (and looks nice in my opinion). Themes are flashed the same way as roms and the descriptions will tell you if they're Sense-compatible.
Remember to make nandroid backups frequently. Find a rom, get it set up to your liking, nandroid, and then get another rom and do it all over again until you decide on one.

choice of rom is up to you, most you'll see will be 2.2 which you'll want for full flash support, to be able to install themes you will NEED and (deodexed) rom. Look for deodexed roms, and there are plenty. A lot of themes will be flashable zips which you install the same way you install a rom (through recovery-install zip from sdcard-choose zip from sdcard).

Thanks you guys! I sorta figured out how to apply themes using the recovery screen after boot up, but it caused the screen to go black HAHA. But anyways, I couldn't find a definitive answer to what I was looking for. I will check out the deodexed roms, thanks!
I one more EXTREMELY important thing about themes, do wipe cache and dalvic twice, but DO NOT WIPE DATA. That is probably why your screen went black. Eithe that or the rom was not de odexed

custom rom help for a n00b

OK so first off I want to apologize, I am a noob. Im on many other differedt types of forums and I know n00bs are universally hated. So bear with me.
I know a decent bit about computers/phones/technology. Well more then your average bear at least. Not as much as you guys though.
My phone is permarooted, and now im looking to put a custom rom on. My brother permarooted it for me.
OK I know you guys are gonna say omgz read all the info on the site it's all here. I went to the android dev forum and there are sooooooo many builds I don't even know where to begin. I know none of the cm mods are 'stable' yet. But surely some more then others, no? What are the differences between 6, 6.1, and 7? Any reccomendations? I will be attempting this tomorrow.
If anyone can give me some pointers, point me in the right direction, newb friendly teks.
Any advice or input in very appreciated.
Thanks.
If you like stock android, I would highly recommend cyanogen mod 7. It turned my mt4g into a speed demon. And it is stable enough to a daily driver.
If you like sense, ( why would anyone) then I'd recommend the ice glacier rom, it is close to stock but with alot of bloatware removed.

I guess.I'd like to go with this build.
The instructions aren't very newb friendly. Is there a guide somewhere that goes a bit more in depth on the steps?
INSTRUCTIONS:
-First time flashing CM 7 to your MT4G (or coming from another ROM)?
1. Unlock/root your device and install Clockwork Recovery via ROM Manager
Clockwork recovery is an app? How does one install via rom manager?
2. Do a Nandroid backup!
What does this entail/what tools would I news to do this?
3. Flash ClockworkMod Recovery 3.x 3. WIPE
???
4. Install the ROM
???
5. Optionally install the Google Addon
Why wouul one want to do this and what would the benefits bbe? How would you go about it as well?
I know y'all are prolly like wtf how annoying. But is really apprexiate the help. I have my reasons for doing this, I don't just think its cool or something.
Im more then willing to do the research myself there's just so much info out there i dontknow where to go. Even a point in the right direction would be appreciated.
Thanks.

"ROM Manager" is an app (search the Market). Clockwork Recovery is installed via ROM Manager (do it two or three times, sometimes it won't "stick" right after you are rooted).

This is done from Clockwork Recovery. You can either run ROM Manager and choose "Reboot to recovery" or power the phone down then power back up while holding volume down. There will be a backup menu (nandroid). Make a backup (it saves on your SD card).

Search the forum. Sorry, I'm running a ROM that doesn't require recovery 3.x. Once you find the recovery image you need to flash it via adb or directly from a Terminal Emulator app on the phone. Usually flash recovery <your_recovery_img> or via adb in fastboot mode fastboot flash recovery <your_recovery_img> You can also perform a full (SYSTEM) wipe in recovery mode.

DL the ROM, place the zip on your SD card. Reboot into recovery (should be there already after doing a wipe in step 3) and pick "Install zip from SD card". Scroll to your ROM's zip, select it, confirm, watch the magic happen.

I don't use a CM ROM on this phone but did on my G1. Search the CM site or the forums here. CM ships "bare android", aka the AOSP (Android Open Source Project). Things Google adds (Gmail, Calendar, Navigate, etc) can not ship with CM due to copyright. You can, however, download and re-install them (since they came with your phone anyhow).
I suggest you read things thoroughly and treat everything like you will brick your shiny new toy before ever attempting it. Make sure you're willing to spend $450 retail on a new phone if you screw up. The first time through any of this is NOT for the faint of heart, and you cannot be overly cautious.
You'll probably get a lot of flames of "OMG DONT DO ANYTHING YOU DIDNT SEARCH AND READ", but good luck. Just seriously, be sure to read everything at least three times before doing it. It gets easier once you've been doing it for a few years, but the first trip....It's a deep rabbit hole

[QUIDE] Install Paul's ICS Port and Restore HC

This is just a mini guide to help you flash ICS and restore back to fully functional Honeycomb. You re doing everything on your own risk.Don't bother asking Paul for further instructions. If you still hesitate to flash and try then you re not ready for such things and its better to stay with Honecomb until Asus decides to roll out the ICS OTA
Preparations:
1)Make sure you ‘re rooted and you have clockwork mode recovery installed!
2)Make sure you have enough free space on your external SD-card.
3)Download the latest ICS port and place it in your externals sd-card root.
3)Boot into recovery and perform a Advanced nandroid backup. You will need around 1GB of free space in the SD-Card.
Installation:
1)While you re on CWM recovery perform a “Wipe data/factory reset”.
2)Choose install zip from sd-card.Find the desired file in your sd-cards root and choose. You ll have to verify that this is what you want and then the flashing procedure beings.
3)After flashing is finished reboot system and you re ready to go.
Going back to Honeycomb.
1)Making that nandroid backup was really crucial. In case you didn’t like it at all or you find it still buggy you can restore your system prior to the ICS state.
1)Shut down your tablet.
2)While off keep pressing volume down and at the same time press and hold the power button. After a while you ll see the ASUS logo and on the top of the screen you ll see some small letters.Quickly release everything and press volume up. This will get you into recovery mode! (credits to xuser)
3)Navigate through the menu and choose Backup and restore. Choose restore, select your image (usually the title is the date when the backup was created) and the process will begin.
4)Because the CWM Recovery wont backup the HC kernel you must flash the kernel afterwards in order to boot back to Honeycomb. In case you dont have it you could always flash the ROM you were using before right after the nandroid restore process without applying any wipes. That way you ll have a fully functional Honeycomb tablet like it was before! (thx ValenteL for the reminder)
Credits to Paul for his great work

Hi Ivanovic
Thanks for Your nice guide. Whit this I advanced to install the ICS ROM and it work very well.
But before the step 3 of Going back... must have something more.
The recovery 3.2.0.1 don't make the kernel backup. In this case the Restore don't have the HC kernel. I made Restore whit the ICS kernel flashed and after restore the TF don't started. I closed, enter on recovery and flashed the HC Kernel then rebooted and HC rom started well.
When people don't have HC kernel to flash make a ROM install only to choice of language (here the HC kernel was flashed yet). Close here, enter on recovery and restore. Work well.
You agee whit this?
Thanks.

You re completely right.I forgot to add this part into the guide!
Please edit your op to say that if you have problems following this guide or questions about the rom, please don't ask them in paul's development thread. Now that you put together this guide people who probably should NOT be attempting to use paul's INCOMPLETE ROM are thinking it's ready for use because this guide is now in the general section. This is going to bother paul and possibly distract him and others working on finishing the rom.
Noobs are already wandering into the development thread, citing this guide, asking questions that have already been answered.
Good intentions here with this guide, but i think it was premature..if you need a guide to figure out how to flash a specific incomplete rom then you probably aren't prepared to use that rom or rollback to your old rom, imho
More info added on the OP
I believe that people should have something to rely on when trying new stuff and not only a zip file.
We all know that when we mess with custom roms, kernels, mods etc our device can brick, become semi functional or whatever.
This is for people that want to experiment with something new!

Not trying to be mean to them, but they don't need to bother paul he is doing great work for free, us non dev tf101 owners can help with questions so long as they don't post them in his dev thread, i for one don't mind answering questions on his behalf so he doesn't have to be bothered by them

Yes, but honestly if you needed the guide, you are still a noob, no offense but i think everyone here would agree.
And, if you are a noob, you are likely not to want to use the ics wip rom for anything but experiment, as it is missing many functions that general users cannot be without.
Just be patient, paul's ics will be just as good as other custom roms, when it has been finished

On a similar note. I love how international the TF is. I'm used to the US crappy CDMA network phones lol.
Great guide. One suggestion though you should probably highlight or bold the part where it says you have to flash the kernel. I did catch this in the thread and did flash the kernel. As i found out the hard way you need this if you have overclocked and want to go back to stock. It is probably a good idea to download the origial stock kernel from revolver parts (if you are using revolver I'm sure that prime et al have something similar) or elsewhere. Not having the proper kernel can really be a BIt of a CHallenge.

Lost in the myriad of rooting options

I've finally lost patience with my TF101 boot looping and being flat when I come to use it. Asus clearly aren't in a rush to fix it, and I can't find an alternative tablet that I'm happy to replace it with right now, so I've decided to give guevor's version a go.
The problem being that I've read a load of threads on rooting a TF, but still haven't come to a conclusion on which method actually works for a WW one on 9.2.1.17, if there even is one!
So any chance some one could help me out and point me in the right direction? Thanks
Use Vipermod to root. Search the forum for link.
Thanks, I'll take a look.
Just wanna check my list with you experienced guys before getting stuck in, mostly because it's been a while since I did anything like this and I can't find a thorough guide for the whole process.
1. Root with vipermod.
2. Install ROM manager from the market and use to flash CWM recovery.
3. Boot into CWM recovery and make backup.
4. Copy kernel .zip file to storage of the TF.
5. Boot into CWM recovery and select install .zip option.
6. Enjoy new kernel and hope for no more bootloop/flat battery scenarios making me angry?
Correct, except you shouldn't use apps like Rom Manager to do things that you can easily do yourself. Don't blindly flash whatever Rom Manager tells you to because sometimes it will screw up your tablet. Haven't you read all these threads about people having problems because of ROM manager?
Just use the recovery installer apk by Gnufabio. It will flash a slightly outdated CWM but it works without problems and you can update it yourself by downloading and flashing a newer CWM posted on this forum.
I can confirm viper for root, and gnufabio recovery installer.apk. I just went through the process last night. If you do not use gnufabio you will spend hours trying to get cwm on your device, and failing.(2 hours of dead androids in recovery) wish i had seen gnufabio sooner.
Edit: also theres a remixed viper out there supposed to be a 1 click root
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1534475 is the link
Also i suggest the touch cwm from
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1213723
It works very well and all touch so no need to press physical buttons.
Thanks for the input guys, it's very much appreciated.
I haven't seen the threads on problems with ROM manager. I've just been searching for specific terms and TBH I find this forum generally difficult to find up to date information. It's very time consuming searching and reading lots of nothing posts. The TF info threads have a lot of links to outdated guides (or ones that lack detail as they assume you know everything already ) and a lot of the shortened terminology that's used is confusing unless you visit here. I've read as much as I can, but I wanted to be sure I had the right information before trying out something that could render my tablet useless.
Typical, fallen at the first hurdle!
"hold volume down and power for 3 seconds, let go of power only, then press volume up when prompted on screen" just results in a screen with an Android with a red triangle on his chest. More extensive searching needed I suppose.
lol nope this is my problem i told you about in earlier post
get the recoveryinstall.apk by gnufabio install it on your tf and run it. it installs a working cwm then you can do the touch cwm, kernel rom etc after that

Thanks for the reply. I found some posts last night where peeps were not wiping anything so I just flashed the 16b test kernel. Seems to be all OK so far.

What the link downloads is a .zip w/ some folders and asstd files. Everyone is referring to it as an apk...Im confused.

It should be an apk. Did you use the link in his thread?
I have links to the apk in post 218 also including a modified version that will flash Team Rouge recovery.

Thank you very much for those links...yes, those were apks. I have been looking for those links for sometime.
flashed the RecoveryInstaller.apk, giving me a recovery system to work from, now Im restored, rooted, ROMd and OC'd...thanks for the links!!
Since rooting mine, flashing the 16b kernel and OCing to 1600mhz it's been completely stable and fast. I just hope that continues!
Thanks everyone for your kindly assistance.

[Q] -Updating, So simple a 4th grade could do it?

Hey guys so I am coming over from using a jailbroken iphone to now using a rooted nexus 4, which i found harder to do than jb an iphone (yeah ik i'm that bad)
And so here I am today I have my nexus 4 on the 4.2.2 update, no custom rom or kernel or anything, just super user access. And I really wanna start doing more such as the 4.3 update, custom roms and tweaks and such but before then I wanna make sure I got my back up down.
I rooted using the "Nexus 4 toolkit" and by choosing the one option does all option, which installed the twrp backup I believe.
Now I am super noob to android and i've already read the pinned guides for introduction to android and rooting but the rooting one was too complicated for me.
So I'm asking for easy 4th grade instruction for anyone who has the patience and time to help me accomplish these things
1. get onto 4.3
2. have backups for future use
3. be able to have a custom rom installed.
4. not end up with a new paper weight (like I did before when I first tried rooting, yes I'm that bad)
plz and thank you very much,
1. Download the Nexus 4 Toolkit which I'm assuming you already have since you rooted your phone.
2. Install a custom recovery, I recommend TWRP for ease of use and because its awesome D).
3. Download the 4.3 flashable zip from the Android Development forum and put it on your external storage.
4. Turn off your phone.
5. Hold down the power + vol down button til you get a screen which says start, and a bunch of scary looking things
6. Use the volume keys to scroll down to Recovery Mode
7. Click the power button
8. Once you're in TWRP, click Backup
9. Click start
10. It'll take a while, but once its finished, go back to the start screen of TWRP and click Install
11. Click wipe, then yes
12. Find the zip file of the 4.3 flashable you downloaded.
13. Click it
14. Wait a bit, and you have successfully installed Android 4.3!
Additional Info:
Regarding wanting to flash a custom ROM, do the same process you just did except with a custom rom zip rather than stock android.
If you ever want to restore, wipe then go to restore and select the backup you'd like to restore from
I hope this helped!

Pretty good. I do believe they already have twrp. So just power off. Or download quick reboot app. Or ROM manager to reboot recovery if you Dont want to hold power and volume down till you get to fast boot. Or boot loader. But its all easy. With twrp you'll see you swype to engage. First thing when you get into your recovery is just click backup. Follow prompts. Rename or leave as date. I name mine virgin flash. Then back out to twrp opening again. Then wipe data factory reset wipe cache and dalvick cache. Then most cases no need to wipe system unless changing base. In this case of 4.3 I would. And returning I would. So just reboot once your backed up. So you can go download all your ****.
Gooim. App fave. Play store you'll find it. Then ROM toolbox. Then titanium backup. Then Franco kernel app. Then system tuner or system panel. Then kernel tweaking apps. All are up to you and optional. If your looking for something worthy to flash I like these.
Carbon. Liquid , and jelly beer. Also miui is the "Different ui" as most others will look identical. The ones I named can have themes in the chooser downloaded. Gives android its ui overhaul. Just enjoy ...

OP:
Do NOT use toolkits. Take the time to learn how to do things manually. It will serve you so much better in the future than just pressing a button as you'll actually KNOW what's going on and how to fix any potential issues.
To everyone recommending the use of toolkits, shame on you
Thanks for the input everyone gonna go down the list and try the instructions you guys have given and come back and tell you how it goes

As you mentioned about nexus 4 toolkit just use it to relock the boot loader and then do a normal reboot
Now go to setting>>about phone>>system update there you will see that 4.3 update is available just do it now you should be in 4.3
Now follow this guide for rooting and stuff http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2384824
by following the guide u will be able to get root access in 4.3 and can be able to install a custom recovery
Using custom recovery u can flash a custom ROM NOTE:- FOLLOW THE INSTURCTION GIVEN BY THE DEVELOPER OF THE ROM IN THE THREAD
ITS SO SIMPLE THSN USING A CRAPPY IPHONE
