[Q] Im new and lost

I just had my dad do a full root on my evo just for the wireless tether. i really love the options that have opened up and want to pursue them. i want to be able to install boot animation, lock bars, and themes. the problem i am having is i really dont know where to start. ive done alot of research on things but doesnt really tell me exactly what i need to do. i have been told that i need to get a new rom to be able to use custom themes and lockbars and stuff like that. with that i was told i need to do a nanoid backup. so what i am asking from you guys (the expertts with alot of patience for noobies is step be step instructions on what i need to do. i dont even know how to do a nanoid backup. tell me what actions i need to take and what apps i will need to make all this happen. please help me all the other forums tell me is stop being a noob are use the search feature. i just dont think other peoples posts are exact;y what i am asking for so please give me help so i wont be such a noob and have a custom look on my evo.

I'll help you start by flashing a custom recovery which will allow for nandroid backup, data wipes, and flashing custom roms.
1. Download Rom Manager from the Market
2. Open Rom Manager and flash ClockworkMod recovery, which is the first option in Rom Manager. You can use this recovery, which should be installed if your father ran UnRevoked 3.2 to root your EVO.
3. However, I recommend scrolling down to the bottom of Rom Manager and flashing the alternate recovery, Amon Ra. This is the one I prefer to use to flash my roms and whatever else.
4. Grab Quick Boot from the market for easy reboot into recovery or you can just power off then hold vol down + power on to boot into HBOOT. From HBOOT, you can scroll to select recovery, which should put you into Amon Ra.
5. In recovery, you should see Backup/Restore option. Click this and do a nandroid backup. Let it run through until it states completed.
6. Return to main recovery menu, and goto wipe. Select wipe data/factory reset, cache and dalvik cache. You can do each wipe twice just to be on the safe, if you like.
7. Once nandroid and full wipe done, you can select USB-MS to connect your SD card to your PC to load a custom rom onto the root of your card. Once loaded, just disconnect the SD card by hitting power button and return to main recovery menu.
7. If your custom rom is on the SD card root, you should see the rom zip file when you select flash zip from card. Scroll to the rom and select it. Let the rom flash process complete and then reboot the phone.
8. This should take possibly 3-5 minutes to completely load the custom rom onto your phone.
9. Hopefully, everything worked out and the phone boots into the custom rom's homescreen or handsfree setup.

I do have an additional question to this, what custom rom should I use? Will it have 2.2? And are there tutorials how to install themes? Do I need to have sense to install these themes?

Hit up the development forum and check out all the roms. Look at the screenshots and features. When you find one you like, grab it. Check out Fresh 3.3 and Myn's Warm twopointtwo. I've used those both in the past. Those both have Sense and Myn's ROM is already themed (and looks nice in my opinion). Themes are flashed the same way as roms and the descriptions will tell you if they're Sense-compatible.
Remember to make nandroid backups frequently. Find a rom, get it set up to your liking, nandroid, and then get another rom and do it all over again until you decide on one.

choice of rom is up to you, most you'll see will be 2.2 which you'll want for full flash support, to be able to install themes you will NEED and (deodexed) rom. Look for deodexed roms, and there are plenty. A lot of themes will be flashable zips which you install the same way you install a rom (through recovery-install zip from sdcard-choose zip from sdcard).

Thanks you guys! I sorta figured out how to apply themes using the recovery screen after boot up, but it caused the screen to go black HAHA. But anyways, I couldn't find a definitive answer to what I was looking for. I will check out the deodexed roms, thanks!

I one more EXTREMELY important thing about themes, do wipe cache and dalvic twice, but DO NOT WIPE DATA. That is probably why your screen went black. Eithe that or the rom was not de odexed

every rom has a kernel. It's only if your wanting to overclock etc you would want setcpu and maybe different custom kernel

[Q] Help with ROM Manager with RubiXFocused 1.8.6

I just installed RubiXFocused 1.8.6 yesterday. I installed it by booting into Clockwork Recovery (I think that's what it's called) and installing the zip file. It is a brand new ROM for the Droid X and I am very happy with it. The only thing is that it has a white status bar and I think it would look a lot better with a black one.
I looked online and found that the easiest way to do this would be through ROM Manager. So I got ROM Manager and tried to install Blackmodz Black Bar. Everything works until it reboots and tries to install the update. About halfway through I get an error showing a triangle with an exclamation mark inside and the android next to it. And then the phone reboots with no update.
I am in bootstrap recovery when I do all of this. Any help??

That black bar that you are trying to install is not compatible with Rubix at all. Rubix uses a completely different framework. When you try to install that black bar- it is trying to replace the Rubix framework-res.apk. Thankfully you were "unsuccessful".
Might I ask- are you keeping up with the thread on Rubix 1.8 over here...

...it is very helpful and you will be able to find modifications that work in this thread. Now that you are running RubiX you must be careful with any mods that you do to your X bc Rubix is using a framework-res.apk that is unique to the Rom and not shared with any of the other roms or the original Moto rom. that means most mods need to be specifically designated for rubix 1.8.

Can someone please let me know rubix 1.8.9 is more stable than 1.8.6 ? I have a rooted droid X running OTA 2.2. I have YET to install a custom ROM, and am a little apprehensive, as I do NOT want to BRICK my phone. Also, can someone please verify the correct procedure to install a custom ROM. I have Clockwork Recovery Manager installed, as well as Koush's bootstrap for DX. I believe I have to boot into Clockwork Recovery and perform - wipe data/wipe cache, and then install zip from SD (once I put the ROM zip file on the SD).then sit back and let install..continue..Am I missing something? Thanks for any help/advice.

I perma-rooted my T-Mobile G2, but now I'm lost.
Since I can't flash official ROMs, what can I do to update OS? Are there any options besides CM7? If I switch to CM7, does it mean I lose all my previous installations? And does it mean I'm stuck with CM forever? When do you expect official version of CM7 to be released?

You can flash any ROM you want. There are many good solid ones in the Development forum here and other android forums of course.
If you're looking to back up your apps before you install a ROM (because you must wipe all data when installing new ROMs) I'd advise you download an app called Titanium Backup. I use it regularly when switching ROMs and it really is necessary. This can back up all apps, app data, and even system data if you want. You can then restore after flashing your new ROM.
CM7 is at RC-1 (Release Candidate) which means that it has been declared stable enough with few enough bugs for the general public. I've personally been running nightlies for a few weeks now with no issues, and the RC-1 seems to be similar. There really is no date for when it will become an official release, but if you're up for waiting that's totally understandable.
If you don't wanna go with the CM7 RC route, you can always go to one of the other Sense-based ROMs, or even CM6 which has been extremely stable for a long time now. You can always just check out one of the stock 2.2 roms as well, they're often optimized with no bloatware and often run quicker than the stock ROM with perm root you have now.
Changing ROMs is easy, and just because you decide one doesn't mean you can't switch to another. Just use the app "ROM manager" to backup, wipe, and install different ROMs as you see fit.
Basically which ROM you choose is up to you. Just look through the dev forum and check out the offerings, read then ask questions and try them out. I definitely recommend reading some of the stickies about backing up/flashing/etc. before you get going.
Kinda hard for me to give more info because it seems like you're pretty new. I'd just advise that you read up on everything and always do backups before you flash any ROM or update in order to restore if you run into issues.

1. Download and install ROM Manager and within ROM Manager flash ClockworkMod Recovery. This will allow you to create and restore complete backups of your phone. This should be the first thing you do. Second, create a backup (a Nandroid). It will be almost impossible to screw things up permanently with ClockworkMod Recovery installed and a backup on your sd card.
2. After you have a backup created, you can start trying different ROMs and if you don't like it, just try another one or restore your backup. You can even have multiple backups of different ROMs and switch back and forth if you want.
3. You are going to see a lot of references to gapps, which is short for Google Apps. Many ROMs come pre-loaded with gapps - Cyanogen was stopped by Google from incorporating them into his ROM's so the package is made available to flash immediately after you flash a CM ROM. Once you log in to Google with your account (use the same one every time) all your market apps will start downloading from the market automatically - that is all the apps that you had actively installed before you switched ROMs. Your phone will be sluggish at first while it updates all your market apps. To backup apps that you've installed from your sd card, download Titanium backup.
4. Now that you're rooted you aren't stuck with anything. Your options are wide open. Just look over the XDA site. It'll be obvious how much you can do with your phone now.
I'm on CM7 now and its very stable. Download build #41 - 42 should be out by the morning. If you decide to go with that, you won't believe how much more your phone has to offer than the stock ROM. I don't believe you'll ever want to go back to stock again, but if you do there's information here in the forums to do that including unrooting your phone.

I agree with this, read about the different roms in the G2 Development Section especially.
It's a bit confusing with all the roms, but as long as you backup your rooted setup now, you should be free and fine to try several different ones. (See step 1 about by EdKeys).
I recommend purchasing Titanium Backup...it will allow you to reinstall all your apps relatively quickly and keep all saves/settings.
Try out a sense rom (for example Virtuous) as well as CM7. I tried out sense before, but it makes the phone feel slow despite being very cool. When I first rooted my G2 I went straight for Cyanogenmod 6.1.1, as it was the stable version. Cyanogenmod 7 RC1 is way better.

Also, this isn't stated anywhere normally, so I'll share with you: I absolutely suggest using ROM Manager for most everything - it's a GUI for Clockworkmod, basically, and makes things a bit easier.
HOWEVER
The only ROMs you'll find in ROM Manager are ones that the developer has submitted. Not all devs care that much, so you'll find a TON more ROMs to try in the Development subforum. To flash one of those, simply download the .zip file of the ROM to your memory card (it doesn't matter where, you could put it on the root or you could create a 'romstotry' folder if you wanted).
Once you have the zip file on your memory card, open ROM Manager, choose 'Install Zip from SDcard' and show ROM Manager which zip file you want to use. IT'll then pop up and ask if you want to wipe, and if you want to backup your current ROM.
If you're switching between two different ROMs, you *always* want to wipe. Always. If you're simply installing a new version of the ROM you currently have installed, you don't *need* to wipe (unless the dev specifically says that you need to, so read the changelogs), but it's a good idea to do so anyways. You'll have a bit more setup to do, but wiping will prevent most problems that people seem to have.

Hi - the first thing I did after perma-root was change the boot animation for my G2 - you can do it by hand, or you can use an application located in market - just search for 'boot animation.'
After that's it's straight to the custom ROMs - I'm using Sense Virtuous 1.0.0 and loving it.

Tried to install Liberty on my Droid X, messed up, stuck in a hole, plz dig me out

Up until today I never did anything to my droid x as far as rooting and roms. I kept everything completely factory and android was at its latest version which is gingerbread 2.3.3 and system version 4.5.605.MB810.Verizon.en.US.
My goal today was to finally experiment this and install Liberty Rom. I completely failed because of all the version complications and plenty of other errors. Before I describe my final problem I should backtrack and let you know exactly what I did today so you can possibly get me out of this mess.
1. The very first thing I did was follow all of the steps at a forum on droid-life "How To: Get Rooted Gingerbread On DROID X" sorry it won't let me post the link.
After all of this I ended up with gingerbread again, but I guess a rooted version. No idea why this was the tutorial I followed when trying to install liberty. Throughout the tutorial I ended up buying "Droid X BootStrapper" because the tutorial had me use it.
Right after this tutorial I bought an app called Rom Toolbox for $5.00 downloaded Liberty through it and was trying to install through it. Every time it rebooted I would get a black screen. Never worked so many issues probably because I flashed the wrong sbf or something.
Here are the programs that I ended up buying today:
z4root (free), DroidXBootStrapper ($2.00), Rom Toolbox ($5.00).
That is everything I have done and all of the apps I own. Can someone please start fresh and give me short instructions to start from scratch on how to get the latest and greatest version of Liberty on my droidx from where I'm stuck at now. I want to completely start over and I am willing to do anything. I hope the apps I bought help and I also want to assume 2 of them probably do the same thing and I didn't need them.

Buying those tools will at least help support 2 members of the community (Koush & JRummy).
I'm pretty sure Z4Root does not work on the GB versions of DX firmware. That's probably why nothing is working. You aren't actually getting root.
you are on the .605 version of GB (when you see references to .602, .605, etc ...)

You may also want to download the Droid2 recovery rather than the DX. The D2 version is a little newer and I think avoids a slight bug on later kernels when Debug is on. The D2 version works just fine on the DX. It can be downloaded free from here:

Once you are rooted and have recover properly working, you should be able to use the Rom Toolbox to download and install Liberty. Just make sure you read carefully about the 'version' requirements on any ROM.

Oh ok so I was rooting it wrong.
I easily rooted the phone using Pete's Motorola Root Tools. I realized that Rom Toolbox Pro accesses clockwork recovery when the phone is rebooted instead of the phone just restarting fully. But, I still want to start fresh and do everything from the start again. Please let me know if you have any suggestions in the way or order I am doing things. My phone is currently up rooted at 4.5.596 and rooted by Pete's Motorola Root Tools but I want to start over from the beginning so here is what I am going to do:
Note: Before I do anything I am going to format my SD card for a fresh start.
1. Use RSD_Lite 4.9 to Flash my phone back to 2.3.340 using a file called VRZ_MB810_2.3.34_1FF_01.sbf. I always do this part with no problem.
2. Do a hold power+home then search and do a system wipe/restore. Then Activate service, sign into gmail etc.
3. Now that the OS is loaded (the old version with the grey bars 2.3.340) I am going to root my phone using Petes Root Tools. (I hope I can root it with this tool when the firmware is this version.)
4. Put the 3 zip files I have on my SD card to upgrade to GB 588. Also put my GB 596 file on here.
5. I will download 1 app. D2BootStrapper. Bootstrap recovery, reboot into recovery. Install all 3 zip files from SD card. Now I boot up in GB 588.
6. Now I go right back into D2BootStrapper. Bootstrap recovery, reboot into recovery. Install GB 596. Now I have GB 596 rooted and loaded.
7. After this, shouldn't I be able to download Rom Manager Premium and Rom Toolbox Pro and test as many roms as I want? always reverting back to my original backup.
I noticed after installing liberty I was getting all kind of force close popups. And the phone wouldn't connect to service. But then I just held power + home then hit the up/down arrows and did a wipe/restore and it loaded liberty and everything works. Is this normally what has to be done when installing roms?
If there is anything wrong with my process please let me know. Whew I can't believe all that I learned in 1 day.

You've got a lot of steps there that really aren't necessary. When you install a ROM like Liberty, it replaces EVERYTHING in /system. Thus, about all that is left from a .596, .588, .602, etc install is the kernel. The Kernel doesn't change very often in Motorola builds. The last change was on .602. Thus, for your purposes there is no difference between .602 and .605 (FYI, .605 was just a keyboard fix over .602).
So, if you search around, you should find an SBF or AIO flash file to get you to .602.
Or you can simply take the OTA update from VZW after SBF'ing to .340
Once you've flashed your Rom, be sure to clear data/factory reset. You should then start with a clean system.

Alright, if you don't mind can you please let me know what steps I can avoid.

So my goal should be to get to .605, then root it. Then install roms from there?

On your first post you said you were on .605. I'm assuming that is still the case.
If so, then root it with pete's tool (I think you've already done that).
Install D2bootstrap, then ROM Toolbox and install your rom from there.
I have to be honest, in that I've not used Liberty in a while, nor have I used Rom Toolbox. It shouldn't be a problem, just make sure that the version of Liberty you are using is for the GB kernel. Some of the older versions of Liberty (Which I did use, and like) were for the Froyo kernel (in that case, stay on .340 and do your upgrades).
Make sure you wipe data in recovery after installing the ROM. Lots of 'Boot Loops' are due to not wiping data after flashing a new rom.

Yeah I read up on all of that. I actually might not end up going with Liberty. Going to try others like ICX. But before I do any of this I need to get to .605.
No I am not at .605 I believe that's where my phone was before I started all of this.
Right now I am flashing back to 2.3.34
Once I am back up and running there. Can you please recommend the easiest way to get to .605 and that will be my final question.

.605 should update automatic. If not you can disable the updater using titanium backup by freezing system updater.
1. Use petes tools install cwm as well
A. Droid x bootstrap get this
B. Titanium backup. Backup your apps
2. Make a backup using cwm and backup apps with tb
3. Put the rom zip files on the sd card.
4. Reboot to recovery. Reformat system data etc
DO NOT REFORMAT THE SD CARD.
5. Wipe cache davik etc.
6 flash rom. And reboot.
7 run tb for your apps
Should be a smooth and clean install. The roms are already rooted so no need to worry about that. Hope this helps

I would point you to a link here, but couldn't find a quick/easy link to what I wanted.
In this list is an SBF file for .602. Since you seem comfortable with doing SBF's, I would just SBF straight to .602 and root it from there.
Don't know much about ICX, but would encourage you to look at the CM7DXGB thread over at Rootzwiki as well.

Am I not going to be able to root it after this update or should it be fine.

Pete's Root tool should root .605 just fine.

One last thing
As far as Clockwork recovery goes.
Should I always be in the latest version 5.0.2.0 (the blue version)
Or the old version 2.something (the green version)
Why is there 2 version and why would I ever want to flash back to the old version 2.something?

Couple things most of the updates are to add support fix minor bugs etc.
I run the one from petes all the time I forget which version. I haven't had problems.
On my mt4g slide I had to flash a modified verson of clockwork due to my phone being newer and not as much support
With that said its not a difficult process to get a new recovery image. You would need terminal emulator and root explorer. Couple of great guides on here on how to do so. Also other methods as well.
All in all the ones that pete's give you should suffice. Unless your one of the extreame types of people who want the newest or like messing around.
Just remember backups can make the process and hassle of soft bricking your phone much easier to fix and takes a few mins to do.
Look around the forums lots of great information from the devs, experts, etc

The newer version changes the way backups are stored. The new format is smaller and quicker.
Among other issues/bug fixes as mentioned before, but the backup issue is important as the new version will not restore the old style backups.

[Q] First time ever that im going to use a custom rom

Allright.. i decided to start using a custom rom, which will be CM9. but because of soo mutch information on this website i dont fully understand anymore what to do, and because im still a noob, i cant post in the original thread of CM9.
I have a Red lens Motorola Defy MB525, found out with catlog that i got the bayer camera module , non branded, stock froyo.
Rooted my defy
nandroid backup with 2nd init , made a copy to my laptop to be completely save.
did backup the apps with titanium backup
also have the app battery calibration so i can fix my battery after the custom rom.
i will write the custom rom when my battery is on atleast 50 percent, so it will not die.
So what do i have to do next?

download the correct ROM, it will come as a .zip
copy it to your sdcard, reboot to 2nd init recovery,
factory reset, and wipe dalvik cache from advanced menu.
then in recovery choose install zip from sdcard, choose your ROM.zip, install,
reboot, it will take pretty long until it boots first time because system is rebuilding the dalvik. (~5min)

Wow , thats sounds way more simple then i can find on this site.

Maybe you should try multiboot first just to be on the safe side.

what is multiboot and how can i do that?

Multiboot is basically the possibility to have two or more different ROMs (e.g. CM7 and CM9) installed at the same time and when you boot up you can choose which ROM you want to use. But it is a bit complicated and it wouldn't work with stock Froyo as one of the ROMs I think.
More suggestions? You should also download the latest gapps from http://goo.im/gapps and put the zip on your sd card as well. After wiping and installing the CM9 Nightly from sd go to install zip from sd again and choose the gapps .zip. After that you can reboot the system.
The gapps are the Google Apps (i.e. Play Store and some more) and without them you can't even setup your Google Account, download apps, use Gmail etc.

That would be good. Try it out and see if it suits your requirements..There are many ROM's for froyo kernel. You can try those and see which suits you best.
