Ad-free after 3.2 OTA - Acer Iconia A500

I am wondering if ads will still be blocked after updating to 3.2 and losing root. I have un-rooted before and ad-free continued to work. Really, now that 3.2 supports ntfs ad-free is the, a in thing I need root for.
Please let me know your experience if you have updated with ad-free installed.

Adfree works by replacing the HOSTS file. So if you do not have root the ad servers that are in the hosts file will continue to be blocked. What will happen is the ip addresses of the servers are changed they will no longer be suppressed. This is why you have to update ad free from time to time.
Updating the HOSTS file is what needs root access since it is on the /system partition with read only rights.

Thank you, I will go ahead with the OTA, and hope that I can root later on down the road.

If you upgrade the hosts file will be replaced by the update.

If you update to OTA 3.2, you will be unable to root the system.
And as painter_ has pointed out: You will need a rooted system to make changes to the HOSTS file
NOTE: The devs maybe able to get root working at a later time, as they work on updating iconiaroot, but there is no garauntee...
You might be better of flashing Taboonay 2.1 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138051): which is a pre-rooted 3.2 rom

Actually with all the id10t problems we've been seeing with taboonay, he's better off installing a pre-rooted stock 3.2 ROM, but the point is moot, as his post was so long ago, he's most likely made his choice and committed to it

IMHO, a post that is, only, 12 days old is hardly what I would consider 'a long time ago', when compared to posts that are 1-12 months or 1-2 years old.
Just my opinion.

Thank you for your opinion. Since his initial post date has the OP posted in this thread again in those 12 days?

No need to get worked up. I did end up going with taboonay with Richard Trip's kernel. For the most part I am styling so to say. I couldn't live without ad free.

[Q] Help! Lost root after updating to HC 3.2

Hi all,
I got my Iconia A500 updated to HC3.2 last week. But I lost my root access after updating to HC3.2 and I can't tether my Iconia A500 to my ad Hoc hotspot!
How can I root my Iconia HC 3.2? I want to root my Iconia HC3.2 so that I can enable the ad hoc under root access.
I am from Hong Kong. Thanks.
Blessings,
Kin

Please be detailed in what you were doing version of os you were installing. And so on.this will more likely get someone with same experience to help.your post is left with too many variations.
if your A500 HC3.1 was rooted (you did it yourself, or...?), why don't apply the same rooting procedure to your HC3.2?

Simple reason: if iconiaroot 1.3 was used to root HC 3.1 then it will not work on HC 3.2
Tried it myself on an updated A501.

Rooting HC3.2 Iconia A500
I have the same problem. Did anyone have any solution???
I lost root also, as expected, when I updated to HC 3.2 and iconiaroot did not work (seems to be a problem with superuser. Acer just started rolling out HC 3.2 over the last couple of days but the android developers in these forums are pretty smart, I'm sure they'll start posting root solutions soon.
You may want to try this. It's the root process for 3.2 on the A100. May very well work, although I don't have 3.2 yet so I cannot test it.
http://dcarico.com/articles/android-apps/1016-acer-iconia-a100-root-instructions.html
Thanks for the suggestion, but tried it 4 times on my a500 with HC 3.2 and it would not root.

The version of 3.2 for the A500 is not the same as the version of 3.2 for A100 (the A100 has had 3.2 a lot longer) I suspect in the mean time Acer patched it before releasing the A500 version.
So far there is no way to root 3.2, and more annoyingly, there is also no way to downgrade to 3.1 to get root back (trying to flash a 3.1 update.zip on the 3.2 tablet leaves the tablet unbootable)
for now we're stuck on unrooted 3.2 until one of the devs sweeps in and saves us!

Do you suppose this is a realistic expectation? I understood that once they decide to lock the boot-loader that root becomes next to impossible.
But then, admittedly, I know very little.
I am a little pissed off about the fact that I stupidly accepted the upload without checking this first. Now I can't use wifi tether (no adhoc), making the tablet almost useless for my needs.
Oh well,
Cheers,
-PW
There are many devices with locked bootloaders that have been rooted (my phone, a motorola milestone, is one of them)
The odds are that the device will be rooted again, the only question is when, but I don't really expect it to take too long. hang in there, you'll be back up and running before you know it.

At present only solution is using nearly stock cus.rom to get root.
In more details, look at following thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1265847
If he's already on 3.2, it's too late for that, he won't be able to flash that ROM. if you are on 3.2 there is currently no way to get root, or to downgrade to 3.1
Wait for, maybe, a couple of weeks and there will be a Rootmethod for 3.2.That's my experience with this great forum. For now just enjoy your clean and original Tab.

I keep seeing forum posts popping up on this and other forums from people who've upgraded to 3.2, not realizing that this is an upgrade that is irreversible and cannot be rooted.
I wonder if it would be prudent to put up a warning thread (perhaps a sticky) warning people not to accept the 3.2 OTA update if they want to continue using root.
Hi All,
I bought the A500 last week and, without a lot of thinking, I upgraded to the last OTA HC 3.2 from HC 3.01.
If I do and hard reset to factory settings does it revert to 3.01 or will stay with 3.2?

[Q] Root for Stock 3.2 A500

First off thanks for all the the great roms and how to's to all the devs ... I have flashed to stock 3.2 now i can't gain root ..... any ideas???
Currently there is no way to root the stock 3.2 FOTA. Nor can you go back to the older ROMs as a new bootloader was written when you flashed.
itsmagic and CWM no longer work.
Thanks for the the quick reply... was afraid of that answer ,guess I am gonna have to wait. I sure someone will figure it out real soon ...

Always a good idea to search XDA before flashing a new ROM for your device.
or like me, I was in 3.1 stock, waiting for the 3.2 update and custom ROM.
But my girlfriend find the time to update it without me
Now i've to wait for the root of 3.2 from scratch

Moved to Q&A
I'm having the same problem. Just after buying my A500, I updated it to 3.2 but I didn't know that root wasn't available in that version. Nor that I couldn't downgrade to 3.1 because of the new bootloader.
Does anyone know if it's possible to downgrade this bootloader in order to downgrade to stock 3.1 rom too? I feel that the answer is that it's not possible...

No. It's not currently possible.
I'll probably get people barking at me for suggesting this, but given that you've only recently purchased your tablet, you could always take it back and exchange it. Depending on where you got it from, they may have a satisfaction return window (usually 14-30 days for big box retail). This would allow you to return to an older version, or upgrade to a custom 3.2 ROM instead.
Normally this type of behavior is frowned upon, mainly because it is speculated to result in raised prices of consumer products in general. In truth, really it is up to the retailer. If they are willing to observe a satisfaction return policy, and you are unsatisfied with the product, you are operating within the business perimeters that they've established. It wouldn't be illegal, so its merely a question of your own morality and your willingness to take advantage.
I guess it depends on how badly you need root. For me, it is a show-stopper. My tablet sits at home now that I've lost root, mainly because it is useless for my needs without ad-hoc support.
Or you could just wait for the 3.2 root, but my gut tells me it might be a while. I don't know why, but I have a bad feeling about this particular upgrade. That's not really based on anything factual though.
Cheers,
-PW

That could be because most of the "real A500 DEVS" ( not just ROM chefs) have left this forum for a less hostile environment.

I was going to wait for the 3.2 root but now that you say it might take (lot of) time, I think I'll try to give it back to the store.
I need this root for many things, ie : mounting my nas shared folders.

I use ES file explorer, and it opens my NAS shared folders just fine without root.
(of course I also want root for many things, that's just not one of them anymore)
can't wait untill the root for 3.2 it's coming! please crack that off!
I'm waiting for 3.2 root.
I'm also waiting for 3.2 root, because i want stock 3.2 with root. Right now i'm on Honeyvillain 1.2 with no issues so far, only SU. But that's a common problem right now for 3.2 ROMS.

Once you are on stock 3.2 you can not root, and you can not downgrade, and you can not flash any modified or non-stock image. There is simply no way to do this until someone finds a way to root 3.2

I guess that's not correct, at least for A501 but I think for A500, too.
I followed those steps to get a rooted HC 3.2 for my A501:
- Download HC 3.1: Acer_A500_4.017.07_EMEA_CUS7 http://cdn.acer.futuredial.com/Acer_A500_0.000.00_4.017.07_EMEA_CUS7_1311771237783_253e5e46.zip
- Download Decrypter [DEV][APP] http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1099673
- Decrypt downloaded file with Decrypter (put Decrypter and Acer_A500_0.000.00_4.017.03_EMEA_CUS7.zip into same folder)
- Unzip Acer_A500_0.000.00_4.017.03_EMEA_CUS7_decrypt.zip
- Copy update.zip from the above package to MicroSD card of A501
- shutdown (NOT restart!) A501
- Power up the tablet using Volume - & Power buttons (hold buttons until text shows up)
- A501 finds update.zip and Update will commence
After that you will have HC 3.1 on your tablet. Now root your tablet with iconiaroot 1.3 (use google to find the apk). Once it is rooted you are able to install ClockWorkMod via Acer Recovery Installer from Market, there's a thread somewhere around here, too.
Then look at thread:
[ROM][24.08]Acer A500 HC 3.2 4.015.01[HC 3.2][CWM & root] - xda-developers
So far I have no problems, everything's seem to work okay, WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G...
Hope this helps! However, I am not responsible if you brick your device! Do it on your own risk!

Go into "settings" "about tablet". If you're on 3.2 it's somewhat of a pita to downgrade back to 3.1 to gain root access.

If you already took the update you have to downgrade first, then install a pre-rooted stock, or custom 3.2 ROM.
Here's the thread on how to do it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1276227
with 3.2 ota your going to have to downgrade then upgrade custom rom. I found the easiest way to do this is download the bricked update zip located in the thread mentioned above, put it on sd card. Boot using power and volume up. Flash the room, prior to this make sure you have acer recovery and iconiaroot installed. When you boot you cannot use an onscreen kb. Simply run iconiaroot, and then install cwm via acer flash recovery. Then you can install any of the prerooted 3.2 roms located here and wala no data loss.

Attn: New Xoom Users

For all you guys and gals looking to root and enjoy the goodness of custom ROMs and kernels, PLEASE don't go digging up ancient rooting methods and old, obsolete kernels and other ephemera. There are more old, outdated threads floating around page one in the Development Section and people are getting themselves in trouble, or at least frustrated with dead links, etc.
If you want to root or customize, make sure the method/ROM/Kernel at least works for your Honeycomb version.
If anyone started an older thread in Development that is outdated now, could you consider putting "obsolete" in the title, like Team Tiamat did with Manta Ray and Katana?
We're going to be seeing a lot of new development soon, so maybe we can clean up the joint a little? OK, I'm done now.

Yeah, def took a little while to sort thru what was current and relevant, especially after 4G modifications...
Hmm, since I picked up some of the new Adobe apps I've been thinking I should start allocating some time everyday to figure out how to root/install roms so I can OC my Xoom (I get a bit of lag here and there).
What would you guys recommend I do? Before I read this I was just about to dive into the numerous threads and poke around, but I can see myself following a possibly outdated method. Tiamat seems to be pretty popular, but with ICS coming soon, should I wait a bit to see if I can put that on my Xoom?
edit: should mention that I'm on 3.1 Wifi Xoom.

You have a couple options-both good ones: you can root and install ClockworkMod Recovery and. the Tiamat Moray ROM and the new Odachi kernel using this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1249798 (get Odachi kernel from Development thread), and then wait a short time for our developers to cook up some ICS ROMS/kernels. Or, remain stock unrooted so you can get the ICS update OTA. Just be aware the unlocking will result in wiping your device and flashing a new rom will require a data wipe, so make sure to back-up everything. When you root, back-ups are much easier and restoration much more comprhensive--another great reason to root your Xoom.

I never got too deep into rooting and roms; at most I've just used one of those one-click-root apps for my Captivate, but since I went 3.2 even that's unrooted now. I miss Titanium Backup.
I'm about to head to sleep so I haven't looked, but is it expected that our Xooms will get ICS? I mainly want a faster experience, but ICS looks pretty so I'd like to get that too without having to get a new device.
edit: I think I'll give that link a go tomorrow after work.

okantomi's guide is great. It's what I ended up using. One point to note, if you're planning to use the Moray ROM, step five isn't necessary since Moray is pre-rooted. Adding the Odachi kernel makes it run velvety smooth.
Everything I've read says that not only will the Xoom get ICS, it may be the first tablet to get it.

Acer stock roms offline

Hi, I'm trying to revert to 100% stock (unrooted), but all the links for stock roms from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113878
seem to be offline (i.e. http://vache-android.com and http://cdn.acer.futuredial.com are both unavailable). Anyone know if there are mirrors for these files? Specifically, I'm looking for a 3.2.1 stock rom for the A501.
Thanks!
EDIT:
I found a link to the latest 3.2.1 stock COM_GEN1 full package for the A501 via the russian forums. Filename: 'SD_Acer_A501_Android 3.2.1_4.066.29_COM_GEN1(www.mobims.ru).zip' can be downloaded here.
novedM Wilson,
No one knows where to get an acer stock rom for A501? Sorry to bump - or have I posted in the wrong forum? I just need to return to stock (unrooted) to test something.

Well, Acer closed off all the files, so we no longer get to them.
Vache, had to get rid of his server for personal reasons, so those links are also no good. Eventually I suspect he'll get things in order and we'll get some of those links back.
Which rom are you looking for? ICS or HC? I have a few, some full HC roms, and some ICS patch updates.
Remember, a lot of people live in different times zones, and also have jobs and family, so sometimes it takes awhile to reply

Thanks MD. I totally understand everyone's got other committments, I have both of those commitments too I'm looking for stock unrooted HC 3.2.1 ideally, but 3.2 is fine (I can then do OTA update to get to 3.2.1). I'm in Australia, so I think the rom I need is Acer_A501_4.066.29_COM_GEN1, but any COM_GEN1 for A501 would be appreciated.
BTW Currently I'm running your fantastic and stable 3.2.1 Alexandra III v1.1, thanks for you hard-work in putting that together.
Well I got my hands on a brand-new A501 from Acer, just unboxed. So I will now try to find out how to extract an image of the ROM before doing anything else. Any tips appreciated!
EDIT: Before anyone posts a http://lmgtfy.com/ link, I found it should be just a matter of using DD from the android sdk.
EDIT #2: Hmm looks like I need root access to use DD, can someone point me in the right direction for dumping a full image without having to root the tablet first? The tablet is currently running Android 3.2.1, kernel 2.6.36.3+ and build Acer_A501_4.066.31_COM_GEN1. Thanks.

No Problem, and thanks.
I'll see if I have that rom for you. Am pretty sure I have some Com_Gen_1's
EDIT: I have a Decrypted Acer_A501_0.000.00_4.510.01_COM_GEN1H which is 3.2.1 full Acer Update. (never used it). Just need to pull the update.zip out of it.
The only other 3.2.1 I have is the TMPL.
Also Acer_A501_4.027.15_COM_GEN1.zip (3.2) Used as base for Alex Rom
Let me know if you need them, and I'll upload them.

Rooting the 3.2 is going to be a pain, and you will lose the current image. If I remember correctly, you have to "roll back" to an unstable 3.0.1 and use Iconiaroot.apk. Not what you want in this case,
The other option, was to use Timmy Deans 3.2 root kit, but then again, it installs a 3.2 EUU for an a500 on your tab. Again, not what you want.
You could try the newer "gingerbreak", although I myself would not go this way, only because I don't trust methods that aren't approved by us devs. But would use only as a last chance.
EDIT: Important note. Whatever you try, Get the current UID number before you do it. It's the only safeguard if things go bad. You can run USBDview (search the forums) to get it, or they have several other tools to get it.

Yep, would you believe I did that process on *13* different A501's last weekend in order to flash your Alexandra III rom, so I know that process well, and yep not an option anyway.

I agree this is a last chance since it would mean I'd need to reverse the changes done by that app to remove su and and superuser apk after dumping the image.

Acer_A501_0.000.00_4.510.01_COM_GEN1H confuses me a little since my 3.2.1 is on build Acer_A501_4.066.31_COM_GEN1, so the build number seems a bit weird. And so since it seems you need to root before you can dump :silly: that would be awesome if you could upload your 3.2 Acer_A501_4.027.15_COM_GEN1 ROM, then I'll just update it to 3.2.1 via OTA!

No problem. Will try to upload it tonight. If not, tomorrow. Be careful though. Dang thing just might want to OTA to ICS!
Sometimes, they name the update files strange.

Thank you
Hi,
I just happened to read this thread and already downloaded your official ROM. I am also using your 3.2.1 Alexandra III v1.1 and planning to revert it back to the official firmware. At first, I try flashing the SD_Acer_A501_1.309.02_COM_GEN1 ROM and succeeded. However, when I try to update, I always get the "your device is up to date" message. But now, I am planning to flash my A501 with your ROM and hopefully will be able to update my A501 normally. I want to say thank you for uploading this ROM.
I flashed the ROM MD uploaded, worked fine, thanks MD. However I also get 'Your device is up to date' when running 'System Update'. Currently the tablet is running Android 3.2, but 3.2.1 is definitely available, as that is what I have running on my other A501 I just recently unboxed. I'm guessing this is because http://cdn.acer.futuredial.com is offline, hence no acer tablet can be updated right now!?! I also tried vache's OTA Check tool but it also says no update available. I guess that's for the same reason.
For me, my problem is solved since I can live with 3.2 for now, however if anyone wants 3.2.1 stock ROM for A501, I happy to have a go at gingerbreak-ing my 3.2.1 stock tablet in order to dump an image.
Well, it seems http://cdn.acer.futuredial.com is back ONLINE  So many of those links on vache's post are working again. I'm interested if anyone has a way to construct the file name need for a particular package/update, e.g. what would be the file name for the full package for Acer_A501_4.066.31_COM_GEN1. It seems each file name a post-fix with some numbers and hash (e.g. http://cdn.a1.futuredial.com/Acer_A501_0.000.00_4.037.01_EMEA_TMPL_1316069683762_98ed1d97.zip). Has anyone tried to work out how that post-fix is generated? This would allow us to get any package easily...

Hi, could you please upload that 3.2.1 tmpl ROM? I've reverted recently to 3.2 TMPL and it does not want to update. I heard that there is already TMPL ics OTA available.
