Formatting the SD card

I just recently got the MyTouch4G, got it permrooted and did a full back up of my sd card to my pc, but it's still on stock rom. I want to flash cyanogen7 but there's a lot of junk on the sd card first
My question is if it is okay to do a full format and if so, any advice on important folders or files I should copy back after the format, apart from the clockwork folder (i know that one is important)

Well do as I do just create a dir called Files and inside it make sub dir's and put all stuff you want in it like aduio, video, photo, ect. Also dont worry about the other folders in your root /sdcard. Far as format goes as you backed it up to your PC just format sdcard and if you missed something it will rebuild itself. Make sure you backed up video/photo whatever if you took any. Usually once you install something that requires you to place elements in the root of your sdcard after its complete always remove it this way you save yourself a lot of headaches later on. I always keep my dir nice and clean old habit of *nix world

Thanks for your response. Just curious but clockwork recovery on Vibrant saves itself as update.zip (if I remember correctly) on the root of the internal sd card. Where does it save recovery on MT4G? I didn't see an update.zip file after flashing recovery. Thanks again for your response

Its saved under /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup you will see the dir with timestamp. Normally I don't waste time backing up as I know what I am doing but if you do want it then go ahead and just mv the dir to your PC temporarily then sync back to sdcard once you are done.
Whatever data is saved even the cache on SD I know so if I find data that is valuable I still mv it to /sdcard/files and redirect that path. This way I have clean data scheme as you don't want 9000 bs on your root directory.

I know where the nandroid backups are stored but what I was wondering about is the actual clockwork recovery that you boot into in order to flash roms, make backups, etc. On Samsung Vibrant, when you go into rom manager and flash recovery, it creates a zip file on the root of your internal sd. When you do this with MT4G, it puts that recovery flash somewhere.

I think CM comes with clockwork rom manager preinstalled. Your recovery won't change when you flash a rom. There's no need to back up recoveries because they're available in rom manager. If you need cw 3.0.0.5 just download the flashable version from the cm7 forum and save it.
Swyped on my rooted MyTouch4G

Since the mytouch 4g installs some of the apps on the microSD card, does a nandroid backup include those in the system image? Or should I use something like titanium backup for those?

Nandroid will back everything in the system including apps but some data is stored on the sd card as well. My advice is to a nandroid and backup your entire sd card to your pc as well

This is not really in reference to cyanogenmod but any rooted MT4G. When you root your phone you download and install clockwork. From rom manager, you choose ' flash recovery'. You choose your phone from the list and it flashes the recovery image somewhere on your phone. My question was to find out what directory does it flash recovery to and as what the file is called.
I am currently running gorillasens final but this would be the same as any rom here, possibly the exception being cyanogenmod

Hello,
nandroid is a backup tool. It is run from recovery mode, and makes a copy of the internal memory of the phone and saves it on the SD-card. It can also backup the apps installed on the SD-card in the same manner. It is often used when flashing new roms to the phone, since it provides a means to fully restore the phone to the previous state.

So if i did a nandroid back up on my phone it would back up everything onto my sd card and then restore it to its original state (ie nothing).

Yes, the nandroid image on the SD card is an exact copy of the relevant parts of the phones internal storage, so when doing a restore everything will be back as it were before. If, however, you have apps installed on the SD card using Froyos apps2sd (which stores the applications on the ordinary fat32 partition of the SD card) those applications is not backed up. Nandroid includes functionality for backing up apps installed on a ext partition, though.
Personally I use Titanium backup to backup applications when I'm changing ROMs.

Does Nandroid overwite previously made backups, or will it make a new backup every time? In case of the latter, can you choose from recovery wich backup you want to restore?
(Before I flashed my Hero, I made a Nandroidbackup of the original ROM. I don't want risk loosing this backup when I make another Nandroidbackup.)

No, it doesn't overwrite the old backups. You can choose which image to restore.

I did the nandroid back-up when I rooted and flashed to Froyo. I'd like to take a look at Gingerbread, but I'm wondering if I do the nandroid backup again, will it save another copy or write over the previous backup? If it does write over, is there a way to save the first copy to my computer or sd card?

New, here needs some explanation.

I've read over and over and need verification and reassuarance that I'm doing this properly. Trying to keep track of android devices get confusing at time. I'm not a total android noob, I've got my thunderbolt, the wife's fascinate, and a droid x, I've just bought the iconia and it's rooted, my confusion lies with, its magic and the Acer recovery installer. After rooting do you just flash cwm via the Acer recovery installer? Create a backup and flash a new rom? And treat it like any other device?what's the importance of having both cwm and the Acer stock image? Stock is for receiving ota updates correct?
What's different between its magic and the Acer recovery installer?

ARI installs both the custom CWM and itsmagic on to your tablet once rooted. Flashing ROMs through CWM will automatically run itsmagic to calculate the new checksums, you don't need to worry about it.
ARI is just there to make installing itsmagic and CWM a lot simpler.

Have yet to find an app that can do this - have never had the need, but if needed I would just use a microsd card reader, hook it to my PC, and format from there. Anyone else know of a utility for Droid that allows format of external SD card?

I could not the format function in honeycomb either kinda odd.
Anyway, if you are trying to 'format' for first time use in your tab, upon inserting SD card the tab automatically creates the file structure it needs. Hope that helps.

Take the card out.I use a format utility by sandisk works with all removable media.think I gotfeom there website. But there are alot of format utilities out there just format in fat 32 seems to work best.for me anyway

Also when creating backups with cwm does it save backups to the internal memory? Or external_sdcard?
Drives me nuts that the internal memory is at /mnt/sdcard and its not an SD card.

CWM saves to ext SD card!

Another Q, the tablet I have says android 3.0.1 ,what else do I need to know before flashing, do certain roms on work when on certain android versions?
On the phones you have to match roms to radios (but no radios here) are there firmware versions that need to be matched with the from or will flashing the rom bring you up to the current version.
I've learned the hard way so sorry for the noob questions, each device is a new method thanks.

More questions.
When retrieving an ota is it necessary to revert back to the stock recovery as well?
For example prior to retrieving
1. Restore stock backup via cwm
2. Restore stock recovery (is this necessary?)
3. Unroot via terminal or other method
4. Retrieve OTA
Then reroot and reflash cwm recovery and create a backup.

There shouldn't be the need for any of those steps, CWM doesn't care if you have rooted the tablet for example, and the OTA update just updates binaries on the system, it shouldn't be affected either.

if you install a stock rom, you have to re-flash cwm, root, kernel because it cleans everything, and i think that it is a good thing to happen.

[Q] clockworkmod backup/recovery with apps on sd card

If I have apps stored on SD will clockworkmod backup/recovery take care of these - ie will it restore the apps back to the sd card after a recovery?

Yes it backs up all the apps on sdcard. Both the sd-ext apps and the .android_secure folder apps.
During restore of a nandroid backup it will first format the sd-ext and .android_secure folder and then restores their contents to it. So it will not mess up the things generally (unless u use the advanced restore to restore the contents to a different rom).

So this would work to backup apps on Sd, then restore them back to the Sd? I got a tun of apps on installed on my Sd card.. i've been wondering the best way to backup/restore them between flipping back and forth with different mods.
