Xperia play, the ultimate portable gaming console - Xperia Play General

Okay, my goal was to play ps2, gamecube, wii or any pc game on the xperia play. And I knew that can't be done via emulation... BUT you can do that via streaming(local or internet)
here's the result of my test via internet streaming:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xm7X6iOWK0M
why am I using teamviewer? because... we can only use the directional cross...
FOR NOW!!! 'cause, I contacted the splashtop team and they will work on adding the gaming controller.... http://support-remote.splashtop.com/requests/5647
Maybe if we are alot to demand that, they will add the gaming controller faster...
Also, you can get splashtop for free (5$ on market):

I'm using the software BES to limit the cpu usage of pcsx2/dolphin, that way splashtop streamer is always reactive and less time between the move of the character and when we press button...

I don't really get why people try SO hard to play cool PC games on their XP via internet. This way only works on WIFI, so why da F would you rather play a good pc game on your xperia play? Instead of playing it on your computer like it supposed to be? I can see if it would work on 3g, but as we all know, 3g is no way near fast enough to stream a good quality game to our Xperia play.
So, if you CAN'T play a good quality pc game like lets say GTA 4 over 3g (with team viewer, onLive or other ways), then i'm not interested.
nice try either way dude. Not trying to bast your balls or nothing like that.

I'm so sorry, but I think that playing like this is a bit dumb.
I mean, you can only play via wifi (via 3g? lol no), and as seen on the video, you have to stay near the wifi device that outputs the signal for playing without lag, so in that case, I find smarter to play the game on the PC instead on a mobile after having to open a program on the PC and another on the Xplay.

Does it really matter? It's the same f-ing thing in the end? What i'm talking about is WHY for THE LOVE F GOD would you rather play a good PC game on your phone instead of your PC? :S I don't care if the app is made for just mirroring the pc screen or made for gaming, you won't be able to play it via 3g anyway so why even bother?
The ONLY reason i can see this would be cool if you got some friends over and you be like "Hey! I can play call of duty on my phone hahaha you can't!" and your pals will be like "ok.. but it looks like it lags like ****, and why is call of duty running on your pc? plus, can you play it anywhere". You answer "Well.. no but you.." and your friends says "HAH! .. then it's gay as ****".
That's exactly how it is.. bro. Prove me wrong.

I use OnLive on my laptop with no lag so why should it lag on my phone. Also why would i need 3G? I have WiFi at home and when im out i'm very rarely in a position to say oooh why don't i play a game on my phone. You seem to think OnLive just mirrors a desktop it's nothing like that. They even have there own OnLive consoles out now
Sent from my R800i using Tapatalk

Yeah onlive is a totally different thing than this. HTC (afaik) spend 40 mill $ on this project and they're gonna bring it to smartphones and tablets in Q1 2012 where you can actually play games with a controller and hook it up to your tv (if the device got hdmi, wich those devices released with onlive will have). You've got a brand new console, a mobile one i might ad. I do see the point in onlive.

Dude, i know what OnLive is. But you still don't see my point do you?
Why would you wanna play a PC game on your phone? Instead of your computer like it's supposed to be? XP is a phone that also is made as an portable gaming device. But this isn't going to work. 3G network isn't fast enough to run good games in perfect speed (prove me wrong). So even IF it would work to play games on our play, we still would have to play via WIFI. And if that was the case, i would still rather play the game on my xbox or my pc. Not on a tiny ass phone.
The day someone will come up to me with their play and show me that they can play lets say GTA 4 (over 3G of course), then I'll be interested. But as it looks now? No thank you..

So you take your PC everywhere do you? The world is full of free WiFi hotspots, every coffee shop, every mc donalds blah blah blah. The fact i'll be able to play all my OnLive games while i'm on holiday or staying at family members makes it worth it for me imo. With all my data and saves already there stored in the cloud. Epic

Lol no ****, I don't see how this other dude is even arguing against OnLive in any way. During a typical day in my life I am covered by Wi-Fi about 95% of the time. The only time I really don't have WiFi is when I'm driving, which obviously I won't be playing Just Cause 2 while I'm operating a vehicle.
OnLive is probably the absolute best possible thing that could happen to the Xperia play. Now not only will we be able to play every game pre-PS2 era, but we'll get access to just about every major release going forward into the future. How could you possibly not be excited about this? Also, the smaller the screen being outputted to, the better OnLive looks/works. It will require far less bandwidth for a smooth experience on the Xplay and look much better than on a 23'' monitor/HDTV.
Another huge plus - since console are such hot **** nowadays, most games are designed with a gamepad in mind now, so controlling them on the XPlay won't be a complete nightmare.
Bottom line, we'll be playing Deus Ex:HR on our phones within a couple of months, if this thing gets released on time.

ok i don't know what world u guys living in that you got time to sit at mc donalds and play games? :S Don't you have any work or some important stuff to do?
When I'm outside, i work or hang out with friends, not with my phone on a random coffee shop playing call of duty.
But i guess we all are different.. good luck

Lol so you post on an XDA forum for the Xperia Play - a cell phone that doubles as a portable video game "console." You obviously enjoy the device. So you're going to sit there and tell me that you only play games on your phone when you're at home, where you don't have the ability to "enjoy your life and your friends?"
WTF are you talking about? Why would you have this phone if you didn't enjoy gaming on the go? How is adding more games to the library at all something anyone would not want?! You baffle me, sir!

You're wrong sir I DO enjoy games. I play small games, like one race of Asphalt on a break. Or 5 minutes Muffin knight or something like that. But i don't wanna jump in max 5 minutes only to play Call of duty or something like that. IF i wanna play a serious game, i want to play it for minimum 45 minutes, and i don't have 45 minutes free when i'm not at home. That's what I mean. You get it?

Disuss your success in first person shooters

Recently I've been addicted to rainbow 6 multiplayer on my xperia play. I've noticed that I have a much easier time aiming and headshots then other players... Chances are they are gaming on a regular touchsphone, scrambling to aim at me but die before they can shoot.
At a record of 1887 to 817 deaths, it's safe to say because of the keypad advantage, I am better then other players. How are you guys coping with fps??? I was never good at fps but I get records like 100-26 with 42 kills being headshots

I would also like to add that I am extremely happy with this phone, for the simple fact that it's for gamers.. Casual or not the gamepad really enriches the experience... It's sad that sony releases this when they are struggling and don't promote or back it properly... If it was samsung that released it, I'm sure it will dominate the entire cellphone gaming market
Sent from my R800a using XDA App
Ya they definitely released it at the wrong time, or atleast should of worked more on the release games...but i think its a fantastic phone, the gamepad is beautiful, playing first person shooters against any touch screen players does put you a step ahead, i personal like nova 2 never really enjoyed the modern combat, felt really awkward to play. Probably the best part of the phone is being able to play ANY emulator on your phone at perfect speed with a proper gamepad, doesnt get much better than that! Personally loving the playstation emulator and snes! - Kes

Im very disapointed in the way gameloft have applied the right touch pad, all they have done is use it to emulate screen swipes, i dont understand why they cannot use it to emulate an analogue stick like they do with the left one! Like on battle bears

Swipe look is rubbish. It's the one and only thing that ruins fps's enjoyability on the Xperia Play for me at the moment.
Unfortunately Gameloft is only FPS option at the moment. Just like the Ipad 2. They make all these grand promises of great games like Infinity blade yet there hasn’t been any games like it since.
Edit: Has anyone tried Modern Warfare 2?
You guys are screwed the new PSP is on its way and it stole all marketing from the play. Actually the play had a great buzz as far as the web goes but that's as far as it went.

You are right but I did buy the phone for more. I was hoping for PSP games like God Of War. If it doesn't get any more support I may switch back to my 3GS and give this one to my daughter to play games on.
Finally got around to playing Rainbow 6 (great that it was free!).
Seems like top fun online.
Went in blind, straight into multiplayer not know controls etc and managed 11 kills and 12 deaths on the Play. That might not seem good, but it's good for me in an FPS.
Also turned the horrid music off, made it feel a bit like Counterstrike...how good would that be on Android btw?
Can see myself playing Rainbow 6 a lot now.

The PSVita and the XPlay are two entirely different devices. The Xplay replaces your phone, ergo you have it on you at all time. It's not a gaming beast like the PSVita, but the battery lasts all day, you can do all your phone stuff on it, and when you are in the mood for games there are a myriad of choices and they all play awesome because you have physical buttons rather than just a touch screen.
The PSVita is great for places where you actually plan to bring it. Like flights, ferry rides, etc

I only bought the phone for emulators originally. I didnt even care about the playstation store. All i wanted to do was play some snes/megadrive/mame games on my telephone. You can not play these games on touchscreen only. Totally uncontrollable.
Didnt even know gameloft were porting to the xperia play. Got alot more than i bargained for. Some (Most?) Gameloft games are very awesome.
Being able to play mobile phone games and even browse the internet with the control pad is way better and more fun than any touch screen only on the market atm.

You Serious? My 3GS with it's tiny screen is gathering dust.
The Play has had much better support than I thought it would, just GameLoft games have been keeping me busy. Its only been out two months give it time.

Does the low price of the Play indicate it hasn't sold well?

Unlike the Arc in the UK the Play seems to have experienced a sharp drop in price, it's not hard to find a SIM free version for sub £300. The only reason I can think for this is poor sales. Would I be right in that assumption?
Support from SE Is very weak, the playstation store for games hasn't being available for every country and the selection is pee.
FPSE are not user friendly is another reason. I guess 3rd party devs aren't interested in porting games like ff, tekkens, mgs, etc

Problem with the play is, its a niche device, it only appeals to hardcore gamers......
But as a device i cant really fault it, its fast, looks good, plays games great even though many would say it lacks power, the gps is amazing......
Think of it like the sega dreamcast a bit of an underated gem

I dunno if I'd say support has been weak seeing as they secured the three biggest titles exclusively for it: minecraft, Fifa and Dead space.
Wait for pan support and then you'll see what It was meant to be.

The price has dropped significantly here in the US as well. Sony really bungled this one. The device just recently started to be advertised (and that was after the price drop and moreso as a "cheap" phone since its only 99 bucks) and even supporters like myself are a bit frustrated because there really is no support by SE here, while there have been 9 or 10 playstation game releases in Europe, some are not available at all, and the rest are visible in the market but carrier locked for some strange reason. The Playstation suite is not available yet as well.
Maybe they are waiting to market it once the Suite is ready so theres a lot of features and games up for sale, but at that point the device will be almost dead.

The Xperia PLAY not only stopped me from caring about dual-cores, but it's performance has left so little to be desired that I finally get to re-imagine my iPhone favorites as real games with real controls, and have a device so versatile that I didn't just replace my phone, I haven't been playing my PSP/DS as much :\

PSP................... Oh s**t i majorly forgot i had one of those . I totally agree, i only really game on my Xplay, Xbox or Ps3 now. The play may not be a dedicated gaming device but it scratches the itch i get when im out and about. It fast enough to play anything i want it to. Enough said.
@ Cat_On_Droid. Anyone who doesnt know how to use it (fpse) will normally search for info on how to. Googling Fpse guides brings up more than enough info on how to use/set up. If you can use a normal emulator like Gameboid etc. Then using FPSE is not much harder.
Oh and i also frickin loved the dreamcast
I actually think that it is picking up on sales now. I know a lot of people who are planning on buying and seeing an increase of people on forums doing the same.
I think for the US market it really got hit hard because Verizon held back the update so long and also didn't allow any unlocking.
Once AT&T launches it's 3G version I am sure it will take off in the US market as well as being able to hook up to some form of the PSN with the 2.3.4 update.
Not sure about the UK but the price itself put off a lot of people.
In my country I could buy 2 PS3's for the price of one Xperia Play... this should not be the case with a phone that plays games that are 2Gens behind the current PS.
If they had priced it cheaper in the first place it would have sold faster.
I have seen this commercial on TV twice now

First, you gotta pay for FPSE, that does turn off the customers abit (I understand why anyhow), second, PS pocket is advertised well, not FPSE. So people Will think that pspocket is the only means of playing ps games for those without basic knowledge of emulators, roms(u have to burn the disk aswell, which isn't user friendly again)

You have to pay for PS Suite games too FPse i like any other market app, and unless you have been living in a cave you will know about FPse or its windows mobile brother FpseCE

THIS.
Emulators aren't going to sell phones in major quantities and only serve to deepen the niche. The iPhone sells so well because any idiot can do basically anything it can do without much time or brain power investment.
The only way the Xplay and any successors will break out is if there is a "killer app" and an easy way to do it. PS Suite being on the phone from the factory making it easy to download a large library of classic games, and connect to your Playstation etc is the only way a phone like this would be successful. People like us who tinker around with it and take the time to learn how to do things are in the vast minority.
Lets just hope that by the time PS Suite is ready its not already too late.
They have also way over priced the PS1 games. Like games that are over 10 years old with ****ty graphics are more expensive than newer games with amazing graphics and great game play.
Sony PS would make a fortune if they sold the games at $1 a pop.. maybe $2 or maybe $1 per disc

You do. But trust me people would rather spend 10bux on FFIX than buying fpse, getting the 4 disks to burn, use ecm tools, drag to SD, etc. You can buy PSONE game at any time. Where as using emu requires a PC. Oh and if PS suite gets a good selection the emulation would be perfect, unlike fpse which Requires slot of updates. And don't you need to pay again to update? Not sure =\

Psx games are almost always more in depth than any android game. But they still should be cheaper at like 1.99 each like you said. Gameloft games with ripped off ideas and bad gameplay with graphics that are good doesn't make a good game.
The Xperia Play needed the following changes -
1) Landscape Home Screen Support
2) Auto Brightness Dsiable Option
3) PsP emulator
4) PS1 and PSP amazing games to be available at launch rather than the shoddies
5) Alot more Xperia Play exclusives
6) Analog touchpads to have the option to "swipe" or "hold" on ALL games
7) Touchscreen Emulator Software so you could assign buttons to parts of the screen (meaning you can play all games on the pad and buttons)
8) Touchscreen functionality on the analog touchpad (so you can scroll with the analog pad when browsing etc)
9) Dual Core processor
10) 1 gig RAM
11) Possibly a 4.3 inch screen
12) Better Signal (Data strength is not as good as other phones)
13) FM Radio (data Radio is useless on a limited data allowance plan)
14) 720p Video Recording enabled
If the Play had all this, (which are not unreasonable requests for the same price tag), it would of been so much more successful.
Basically the XPlay is just a like an HTC Desire, but with a smaller screen that is often dimmer and a control pad.
It is nothing more than a bog standard Android phone that is great for playing a few emulated games.
If you do not want it for emulation, then get a Samsung Galaxy S2.

Less than the Samsung Galaxy S2, since that has better than the specs i mentioned and still doesn't cost more than a XPlay on contract.
XPlay was way overpriced for the specs you get.
It was hardware outdated before it even hit retail.

I was playing the beta for a while. What I don't like about the update is that it wants you only to use some games. Before I could hook up a mouse and keyboard. But still a great service. Really is the way to go to play pc games and you don't want to upgrade parts all the time cause it costs a butt load. They have a great home unit as well so you can play your games you buy or use the monthly service too. So games on tv, pc, and now androids! Its a win in my book.

That looks Hellua interesting.
I've been playing. It takes a bit to get used to on some games. I've been playing Darksiders and Warhammer. I also demoed a kingdom for keiflings or what ever. Plus Lego batman is free.. I I really enjoy the console games on the phone. Some are a little broken with controls but generally the ability to try a game for 30 min before you buy is so worth it.

I tried playing it, but the screen on my Shift was too small, amazing Idea though. This will be awesome when I pick up my Acer Iconia A100
Onlive is pretty cool on my tab and pc.. But like notso said, the Shift screen is just way too small.
Btw, you can get a month free of the playback (or whatever it's called) http://www.gamespot.com/event/codes/onlive-playpack/

What I really like is the offline gameplay. I mean, with my xbox 360, I have those pesky discs, but with onlive, I don't have to worry about that, right?
Right?

Tablet.. Now what?

I got my tablet yesterday, after rooting it, installing a rom, playing a couple games, etc.. Now what? What are some good apps/fun games? What do you use your tablet for the most?
It depends what you want to do with it. I use my tablet mostly for reading news and watch Youtube. I don't play games in my tablet nor cellphone.
I haven't really bothered with almost any games on my tablet, but I just recently found one game that I have really liked: Osmos HD. Try out the demo on Android Market, it's terribly fun.
hummmmmm
Its your TABLET use it for what you wish.
I use built in email.
splashtop HD .. (TO ACCESS HOME PC)
CHAT such as yahoo. and g+
its your tablet you bought it..
also check out thumbs keyboard and tab- tex or sync sms.. all great apps.

I just browse the web, watch movies and read manga on it with Manga Watcher. I don't really use my tablet much, I only use it as temporary entertainment when I'm waiting for something, or to relax a bit while lying in bed waiting to fall asleep.

My favorites are Hellsing, Full Metal Alchemist, Berserk, Battle Angel Alita and Battle Angel Alita: Last Order, got all of them as physical books too, but I just like to have them with me on-the-go also. I'm just starting up on Sankarea, I have no idea if it's any good or not.
Another thing you can use your tab for is actually productivity: There's next to nothing you can't do with a rooted tab and a linux chroot (within the boundaries of a deterministic Turing machine, of course! )... I personally use it with a bluetooth keyboard for document preparation (LaTeX) and programming on the go (Java, Haskell, C and some others).
Of course, streaming movies from my network storage and playing Angry Birds are very nice pastimes, too...

But yes this is the only thing i check my email on .I text my friends from my tablet thru my phone with the available apps on market.I always get asked when im at the doctors offices and Physical THERAPY ... oops painful torture.. IF ITS A IPAD..
I TELL THEM NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO would never own a i product.. my therapist has a ipad she is going to sell and buy android now that she sees mine.
my biggest complaint about my tablet. Is the apps that i use that try to collect data always..
wish i had a app. that has a widget that would create a freeze now list .. that you can toggle on and off.. it would be awesome.. So that when im tethered i can freeze that list of apps.. and when im on wifi can let them run RAMPED AS they always want to do .. Im talking facebook app my messenger apps google apps and so on... I know they only start then sit waiting for me.. But if i kill them . my speed is vastly improved...They are taking cpu cycles.
ok all that is off topic... SORRY ITS ABOUT WHAT WE HAVE NOT WHAT WE WANT... i shup.... Thumbs keyboard is a most for me....

Yes, of course -- I'm compiling using the debian armel port of gcc and linking against the debian armel libc... all that on top of the android kernel using chroot (basically a crude form of virtualization, two OSes running on the same kernel). That's how I got java7 and GHC (and all those many other useful tools like git) to work, as well... If you want to try it, use Linux Installer from the market.
Proceed with caution !!!!!!! Im game..

Ouya. The android based gaming console

Just saw this browsing around.
What do you guys thinks about it?

This belongs in the OT gaming thread..
That being said.. its not impressive to me..
It really doesnt stand a chance being marketed as a gaming device..
Perhaps as a social media/video device that happens to play games would be a better choice of marketing..

I agree, I'm impressed with how big Ouya has gotten over the past few weeks but I just don't think that Android is a viable platform for console gaming.

no reason it's a bad platform for consoles, it's the arm architecture that might not be up to the performance standards but i think you'll be surprised at what the terga 3 can do. it won't replace the 7 core processor in the ps3 but this isn't meant to compete with that. so game developers would have to resort to better story lines and game play. it's a way for people to get into game development and share. it will never have a market share that sony and ms have but i think the underground following can get very large.

This is exactly right. Is it gonna be the best console out there? Probably not. It will be, however, a neat toy that is worthy of MY $99.
I think it would be neat if they just sold the controller and had a curated app store so you could run the same games on a phone as well.
Microslut has announced a $99 Ecks Bocks a few months ago...
Yeah you have to pay for live with y but most people won't factor that in and this will be overlooked...
It needs to be marketed as something besides a gaming platform.. other areas, it would sell great.. in the gaming realm.. it will get torn apart..

Ohhh, the Ouya...
This little thing has gotten some big attention lately.
I'm interested. Very interested in it.
I don't think it'll compete at ALL against the mainstays of console gaming...
But a tweakable, rootable, android console?
With huge backing?
At very least, I just want to sit back and watch what happens with all this hoopla!
Though, in my opinion, this thing could be an Indie Gaming Developer's dream.
We'll see what happens, though.
I just wanna see all the development for it. What would roms be like? I'm exited for it and I hope I see some of you in the threads when it comes out

No kidding!
Just what sort of a ROM goes on a "console"?
Perhaps a lot of focus on media streaming and definitely a bit of emulation...
With how small and portable this thing is, it could be great to take around and quickly pop into any HDMI TV to play games or watch movies.

If you have stock, yeah...
But a lot of the Roms don't quite support the HDMI adapter right yet. (At least for ICS and JB, I think. Entropy fixed that on Froyo and Ginber, didn't he?)
And even then, it doesn't exactly mirror display of the phone.
Something like the Ouya is MADE to work on TVs right out.

I really think this will be a cool gaming device. It'll run android, its meant to be taken apart and messed with, and from I have read its open to development from everyone from game makers to hackers. This is exactly what we want here on are phones given to use in a gaming consule. Like said when they were making this it wasn't made to take on Xbox and PlayStation rather to have you play games on your TV. I watched games played on this think not made for it yet and it works pretty good. Plus this way we can play whatever games we want for free. I will be more then happy to buy one when its out. I really like what they are aiming for and I believe I can have a lot of fun with this as a gaming on it and hacking it.
Struggling to find legit system specs, are there any yet? Maybe I am having a "boy's" look
It's worth my $99 to spend on it. I'm not expecting it to rival the MS or Sony consoles.
Probably would use it as a media center
Well, I think this would be a great media center, i'd get it connected to a server computer wich i would store videos, films, photos and everything else
