Hello everyone, I'm somewhat of a novice still to rooting android phones. I had the Samsung Fascinate previously, and it was a really simple process..but I had returned it for a Droid 2 R2D2 edition a week or so afterwards. Ever since then I've had the desire to root it and install a custom rom (something vanilla gingerbread or equivalent) to it, but I've been so confused about the differences between the Droid 2 R2D2 edition from the regular Droid 2 that I've been too intimidated to venture into world of it. But tomorrow I'm getting the Droid X2 probably (unless someone here would like to suggest a different phone) and I'm willing to experiment
So my question is..can someone give me a general idea of the process I need to take for my Droid 2 R2D2 from rooting to the rom I should use? Thanks guys!
Use z4 root
It is the easiest way.
It may not work first time, just reboot the phone if it doesn't and it should work the second time.
Search for the latest z4root apk on google (I don't know if its in the market)
As for roms, I have no idea if d2 roms will work with the r2d2. Check out fission rom at teamdefuse.net
Contact one of the developers and ask them
Sent from my Fission Droid2 Global
Also remember before flashing any roms, you must install the droid 2 bootstrap application (because of the locked bootloader)
This can be found on the market

Hey all:
So I'm really interested in changing my rom, but everywhere I turn I'm told I can't do so because the bootloader is locked on the droid x. I had always been under the impression it was the same for the milestone x since they're both motorola, and basically the same phone except the milestone is debranded and used on smaller cdma networks, rather than verizon... However, as I scour the web in search of enlightenment, I find a discussion about the bootloader, where it was implied that it was verizon, not motorola, who wanted the bootloader locked and that on the non-droid (non-verizon) x's this isn't an issue. Can anyone verify that the bootloader is indeed unlocked on the milestone x, our give me a "safe" way to do so? And if so, what roms would work?
Thanks
I haven't seen anything that says that the bootloader is unlocked on the Milestone X. Verizon may not want an open bootloader but I doubt the smaller carriers do either. At least mine wouldn't.

Hey, another kentucky boy. I'm assuming that means you're on app wireless, which means we should have pretty much the exact same phones. Did you take the 2.3.5 update around the end of last year? Have you tried any custom roms? found any that work on the milestone?
Yeah, I'm with Appalachian! Wireless. I played around with some custom ROMs before the Gingerbread update, but I haven't risked it since. I may give it another go once I'm closer to my contract being up. Now that would probably change if I could get a good SBF image to fall back to if I break something.

Yeah its pretty crappy that Appalachian has never released an sbf.. They're sort of weird about stuff like that... But I saw somewhere on the interweb something about a "generic north american milestone x sbf". Our phones don't seen to have any sort of model customization for app wireless, so maybe that would work?... I hear that the ics gummy rom works on the milestone x, but I haven't tried it yet. I'm new to all this hacking and modding stuff.. I finally have it rooted and found this ics launcher in the market called holo launcher that works pretty well, and I've been experimenting with some metamorph themes (got the r2d2 lock screen...oohh yeahhh...lol), so I don't know if I'll risk it. Maybe when my contact ends in november and I'm during outside the store at 4 in the morning waiting in line for the black friday sale, I'll cave and give it a shot... Lol

After successfully flashing my Milestone X with CyanogenMod I noticed my Google Market was not included. I found it and renamed to update... and placed it on my sdcard. No go, I later tried to replace the bootloader and bricked my X. They gave me another one and now I have Gingerbread. From what I read in the wiki I would have to do all suggested backup apn stuff and flash back to froyo or previous version.
The problem I had when I flashed the Shadow ROM, the kernel was not updated, so I decided there was no real benefit to all this and it might be easier to just keep the latest carrier update and install a new theme.
Good luck,
Elliot

I'm pretty sure the bootloader has not been unlocked. The kernel will remain stock no matter what rom you flash.

The generic .SBF won't work on our phones. It would sort of work prior to the Gingerbread update but after it will brick your phone. I think I have it saved somewhere though if your feeling adventurous.

Thanks, but no thanks. This phone has got to last me another few months, so adventure will have to wait.
So, if I use this vortex rom, and it turns oit I don't like it or it somehow interferes with my phones functionality, I can revert back to my old settings via nan droid backup, right?

Yes, you don't even have to wipe anything when restoring a backup.

Thanks! I may give it a shot after all.
One last question, just to be on the safe side.. Installing this rom shouldn'thave any effect on my baseband/radio/data coverage/etc, should it? Sorry if its a dumb question. just gotta be careful until my contact runs out.

It should not, and in the event something should go wrong or not work correctly, you always have the option of restoring a backup or SBFing.

How did you successfully flashed your Milestone X to CyanogenMod? I have a DX that runs on MX now, and I can't get it on Cmod7.

Root first, then use Droid 2 Bootstrapper to install recovery, update recovery via ROM Manager, then install CyanogenMod and Gapps.

Hey! Sorry for the long delay. To give you an update, I WAS able to flash vortex RC1 without a problem. However, I wasn't crazy about the design and I couldn't get the Wi-Fi to work even with the Wi-Fi lib fix, so so I was forced to Nandroid back to stock. However, I tried vortex reloaded and not only did I like the design better, but the Wi-Fi worked!! I used it for a while, then did a Nandroid and downloaded and flashed liberty 3 v2, again without a hitch. I can't decide which I like better, so I just go back and forth between the two. I'm so indecisive... lol... but if you're you're interested, you can download liberty and RC1 from the same place. Just Google "blur-based roms on .621/.604" and click the top result, which should be rootzwiki. You can also find an apex rom there. As for vortex reloaded, you'll have to do a little more digging, but it shouldn't be hard to find...
As for choosing a rom, it's all personal preference. But the one thing I can NOT STRESS ENOUGH is that, when using a milestone x, the rom needs to be modified for the .621/.604 hack. As for 2nd-init roms, I have no idea because I've never looked into them. Hope this helps!!
2nd init roms can be used on .621/.604.

Hi I'm new to the Droid X community, and I saw somewhere that .621 was not rootable but then I saw somewhere else someone found a loophole?
I don't know how updated/accurate those statements are, therefore I am asking a question to you guys.
How do I root this phone? Is there the Superoneclick? Or is there a long root process or what?
I have a droid x 4.5.621.MB810.Verizon.en.US.
Thank you so much for helping.

magic md5 root for d2, d2g, dx, & dx2

well don't remember anyone losing 3g before, and no reason magic md5 root would cause
this
I would try flashing 621 SBF

not sure which root methods, you would have used that, doesn't use software
if you don't like it, flash milestone 604 with sbf_flash, and root with zergrush
just don't flash 604 with rsd lite, it will change the radio
Is there video on how to do this method, I have a Droid x and i want it rooted, but Im no good on written instructions, I do better with video.
I have same version...did u get it rooted?

I have the same exact version u have and I got my phone flashed to cricket. I would like to flash the rom and customize my phone. Please direct me in the right place. Thanks.
Okay, long story short, I've been having a nightmare with my phone. So I did this, and then installed gingerbread, and the excellent CM7.2 mod.
BUT, because of the AT&T froyo backup file I installed using Roadkil disk image, my phone is now locked to AT&T.
If I can't unlock the phone, or find a different (unlocked) froyo backup file, I can't get in touch with this awesome girl I've got a date with tomorrow.
Please help me get my phone working again, so that I can go on this date!

Try installing official GB(if you have the u8800pro) and then any custom ROM you want(looks like you have the pro and used the -51 method). And for Christ's sake please post questions to Q&A forum -.-'
@diestarbucks request to move these 2 threads to Q&A
I answered to you on your other thread.
Only a user of -51 can help you.
But as i read, you have AT&T and i really don't know how to fix your problem.

You can unlock the phone with the u8800-51 upgrade to gb tutorial.

So, the phone is fixed (kinda). I used the official gingerbread and that unlocked it. It's still got an AT&T logo when it boots, and it's definitely a U8800 pro. But, it works fine with cm7.2, so it's all good.
And the date went extremely well, so thanks for that.

Whats up, my brother gave me his razr maxx hd xt926 yesterday and he wants me to switch it to GSM so he can use ST. I promised him ill do more than that with your phone! well when I got on my computer I was seeing that you cant unlock or get root because he had the latest update, this is what h its running 9.30.1 XT926 4.1.2 build 9.8.1q-94-1 . luckily I got root using saferoot that's one problem down. now I would be glad if anybody could point me in the right direction for the next step I should take to be able to get roms and that cool stuff. the switching to GSM looks like no problems. I know I need a recovery to. should I install a recovery first or do the GSM thing first witch one is best to do first? I already have root and phone is still locked.
