I found out the hard way.
I switch from sprint insurance to best buy.
Clerk at the store sold me on it when he said any problems, bring it back and we will give you a new phone no questions asked.
Big lie.
My camera lens and usb port broke.
Best Buy said that had to mail it in to repair it. They said it takes 30 days.
So, then i got a loaner phone for $150 deposit. El Cheapo samsung something...
So, I would stay with sprint for anyone wondering.
yes best buy black tie is one lie after another unfortunately

Of course Sprint is not able to replace liquid damaged phones, we deal strictly with service repairs and that is beyond typical damage or malfunctioning hardware/software.
But...we do have the asurion insurance for those times when you have those soup accidents, and asurions turn around time is usally less than 48 hours, and I do beleive now if you request it there is an overnight option.
I hate Best Buy in general. I mean seriously, they are still charging upwards of $25 for cables that you can get anywhere else for less than $10. I used to really like them, now I get disappointed every time I go in there.

It's been that way for 10+ years...
yeah, they tried to pull that on me with the replacement plan for my little brother's xbox that magically turned into a service plan where they had to send it to Microsoft. Why would i pay them for a two year warranty when Microsoft covers them for 3 years and provides free shipping. Kept arguing with them to no avail, asked for a refund of the warranty, they prorate it so it would have been like $5. No deal, I sent an angry letter to a bunch of corporate emails at best buy i found, including the ceo, sent it to the consumerist and threatened to go to my state ag about the whole bait and switch they tried to pull. Next day got an email back that they were looking into it and a day later had it replaced with a new one.

That's because the employees don't all understand what the store's policy covers, they don't train them all on the policy. I ran into this with my flatscreen. I asked the kid a question about something I read in the return policy and he said, "um, I didn't know that, they don't really train us on it, but let me find out...". Not his fault, its management's.

And I can't stand stupid uninformed and unintelligent customers who come into my store, telling me that their cheapo HDMI cable from cablestogo or wherever, is better than AudioQuest cables... Please, maybe that **** is ok for you, but I actually enjoy getting the best audio and video from my multi-thousand dollar home theater setup... Pfffft.
Don't hate.
I have Best Buy black tie on both of my Evo's. I like what Sprint has done though, so I may change.
in this base.
Both of my Evos speakers blew out. had black tie/tye whatever insurance, they said bring it in we'll replace it, yaddayadda.
Brought it in "oh this is a manufacturer defect, we'd have to send it in, it'd take a few weeks."
"Oh **** that." Went to Sprint and paid $35 for them to repair it. Got it back and my camera glass was no longer cracked, adn the exterior had a crack in bottom left that is now gone. So i assume i got a refurbished one. It had 119 lifetime calls and 92 minutes...which sounds about right for me etc, but p.sure it wasn't my phone I gave them.

Dude. Have you ever used barcode scanner in best buy ? Most of their stuff is WAY over priced.
I was looking at a stereo receiver they had for 700......scanned the barcode and new egg had it for 350. LITERALLY HALF. Best buy is good for one thing and one thing only.......WINDOW SHOPPING.
The car stereo i just bought.......800 at best buy.....400 from a reputable car stereo site.
They have caught on to the scanning now. Their posted barcodes, next to the price, now will take you DIRECTLY to the best buy site.
You have to scan from the product packaging only !
They exhist to take advantage of the technogically challenged.
Try the barcode scanner app in there and you'll see what im getting at.

Oh really? What do you base this off of? The fact that you found a USB cable / CAT5/6 cable online for cheaper? Have you checked out prices on speakers, TV's, laptops, desktops, appliances, PC/console games, digital cameras, or SMART PHONES etc...?
If you weren't so close minded, maybe you would understand.
I think most people have a problem with best buy's delivery. They say they will replace your phone instantly for x,y,z° reason when the truth is its going out for service for 30 days and 150 deposit for some startek moto type loaner. Its best buy's fault for selling you a dream and the consumers fault for not reading the pamphlet they give you at the time of sale. Learn from it.

Everyone keeps talking about a pamphlet.
I never got a pamphlet or any literature. Just a receipt with purchase price.
Well they really got you! They gave me a pamphlet when I bought my Evo. And even though the sales guy said they would replace my phone for ANY reason the pamphlet clearly says other wise. There's even a black tie webpage thru bestbuy.com and it tells you the process of replacement.

my salesperson at BB is a buddy of mine, he said if anything happens make sure its UNREPAIRABLE i.e. ran over by car/ broken in half.
so, you drop your phone in soup? go throw it against a brick wall until its in small pieces and say it fell out of your car window going down the highway. they will look at it and say this is too bad and give you a new one.
thats just what my friend told me. ymmv
This may be a stupid question but is there anything I can do about a broken charger port? Is it better to get it fixed or buy a new phone and if anyone knows, how much does it cost to get it fixed? Thanks in advance!

This might Sound Stupid... But If you have Insurance and their Playing Dirty, Claiming there's Basically a Loophole they can use to Avoid Fixing you Phone, Just Break something else on you Phone That Is Covered by Insurance!
When they Fix that, Go to your Car and Come Back Telling them you just Plugged your Phone into your Car Charger and now that Wasn't Working!! They'll Think they Did it, and You'll Probably Walk Out a Little Richer and with a Smile! Lmao!!!

Hey XDA Members,
So, my mom washed her EVO today, which broke the glass and screen; all it does it vibrates when you turn it on, but no lights/screen/sound after that, so basically dead.
No warranty w/ sprint - after the AMEX accidental warranty.
Options I've come up with are...
-Buy one on clist for $325
-Buy a new one for $400 - $450
-Cancel a line at 16 months left - $160, and the other 2 lines monthly price would go up.
-Add a forth line + buy new EVO on that
-Buy a blackberry on clist - $140ish
What's your ideas?
Thanks!

If you want something like a blackberry curve you should be able to get one for a lot less than $140! not bad phones if you don't mind a super slow almost unusable web browser. Great physical keyboards (and cleanable trackballs They should be like half that price though!

Really I would look for a cheap EVO in craigslist, they can be found cheap if it's a heavily used one but still working good.
Found a brand-new epic on craigslist for $300; that's better than the sole EVO on there for $325.
I would just get another one if you could afford it. 16 months is a long time to go without an Evo. But of course if money is a problem, then black berries really aren't all that bad.
does she really need the power of an evo????
what about something cheaper.. like a HERO..
yes it sucks.. but if you root it..

Thought of this, but then stuck paying $10 extra a month for 4G...not that she used it in the first place. Probably needs the 4.3 inch screen or a slide out keyboard to text...so that's why I was thinking the blackberry, not the hero.
Did you try the rice trick? Put a cup of dry rice into a Ziplock bag. Take the battery out of the phone and place both into the bag. Seal it and leave it for 24 hours. It should pull all the moisture out. Pull it out, put it back together and then charge it.
Edit: Sorry... just read the part about the glass being broken. Well, I'll leave this trick posted here in case someone needs it in the future.
^^^ it is too late to try to the rice trick.. if you turn on the phone and it beeps at you!
and of course the broken screen
How long has she had it? If she had it for less than 30 days, could always call Sprint and add the insurance. You would have to wait like a week or so to put in the claim. Or you could call Sprint anyway and see if they could add the insurance anyway even if it is beyond 30 days. They might work with you. Or call Sprint and see if they have any refurbs for temp then add the insurance so if she gets another Evo, and something happens, she is covered. Insurance is always priority. I would never not add insurance to the line that contains a 600.00 phone. For example, I have had Sprint for a long time and have always had insurance on both of my lines. My Evo was stolen along with the charger and my 8GB card was in it. I immediatly called Sprint, reported my phone as stolen so they could restrict the phone to basically being a brick, they then transferred me to asurian where I paid the 100.00 deductible and they understood my phone was stolen. So instead of sending me a refurb and the card and charger, they sent me a brand new Evo in the OEM box and everything like charger and manuals were nice and wrapped. Brand spanking new. If I didn't have the insurance I would have been in the same boat as your Mom. But I would call Sprint and see what they can work out for you. But ADD insurance to the line.
How bout getting your mom a cheap $10 pre-paid phone since she isn't smart enough to NOT wash a $300 phone, especially when she's too cheap to have insurance on it...

Take the phone to a Sprint store and hope that some one there takes mercy upon you and helps you get some kind of deal. If you're met with a no, keep trying, don't loose your cool and be prepared to spend an hour or two. Run options like canceling the current EVO line, then getting a new line with the reduced EVO price. Take your mother with you, get her a cane with a white tip.
From what i have read, a broken microusb port on an evo from tripping over it or dropping while charging is common. I have also read that in the past, customers with this problem have been denied repair or replacement by sprint. As of now, the most current instruction given to sprint employees is to give a replacement phone. I am getting my new evo on thursday. similar experiences with sprint support?
My wife and I both had issues with this on our first phones within a couple of months of getting them launch weekend. Sprint acknowledged that it was a problem and promptly replaced them, albeit with refurbished phones.
The refurbishment must have worked, though, since neither of us has had any charging problems since.
[edit]
Well, until today, that is. I think I broke it myself this time, though.
[/edit]
This is what I absolutely hate about sprint, they cannot get their sh1t straight. One store will do it, another wont. Thats ridiculous.
Anyway, the usb port breaking IS a hardware failure, and IS covered under the 1 year warranty. If a sprint store gives you crap about it, call *2 and talk to Account Services, tell them you will cancel your account if they dont fulfill the warranty.
Yeah the insurance only covers software problems like the phone won't even turn on same Thing happened to me it broke Sprint denied me and I had to go to a phone repair shop paying $118 but one time my phone didn't turn on because the heat fried it (summer time) and they replaced it.

No, insurance is for lost, stolen, or broken (by you, i.e. you drop in toilet or run over with a car). Anything else that YOU didn't do to the phone is considered a manufacturer defect, and is covered by the warranty. I hate to say it, but you got screwed, you should have gotten it fixed for free.
I'm having the same issue right now. I've had my phone for 10 months and the USB port went defective a few weeks ago. I have to wiggle the cord around to get it to charge and sometimes it will and sometimes it won't.
I'm trying to get my phone back to stock because i used Simple Root v.1 when it came out last year.
This thread says i can just flash a stock signed rom, but my phone says "S-off" even though i never used unREVoked forever. Do i just flash the rom anyway?
My first Evo had the same problem within the the first 4 months. I purchased it and launch and found out that it was a hardware defect but could not go through all the hastle of getting it fixed. I would have been phone-less for too long so I ended up paying 35 to the local repair spore and got a new phone. I have yet to run into the same problem with the replacement phone. I wonder if I could get the 35 refunded to me because I do have chat logs where representatives said it was a defect.

My first launch day EVO broke 2 months in. One sprint store told me I would have to call the insurance and so I went to another sprint store and for $35 got a replacment.
No consistency!!
Well when I asked sprint if they could fix it they said damages like that would be through your one year warranty with HTC and would have to pay deductible.

It depends on how the charging port is detached from the board. If the solder joints are left intact, it's a manufacturer defect and is actually a known issue in the Sprint system.
If the solder joints are damaged or "torn", then it's customer abuse and an insurance claim will have to be filed.
Would the loud speaker being muffled be considered a defect? I have a speaker problem and charger problem. Sprint was telling me $39 to fix it, which sadly is cheaper than I can do it since you have to buy about 6 speakers online

Definitely unroot it. Lady at my local Sprint store got all uppity with me because she saw CM7 on mine. x_x
I went in with mine rooted and all. The guy actually was pretty into the phone being rooted lol. Asked me what time I was using etc. Charge port was broken, ordered me a new (refurbished) phone, sent me on my way lol.

I believe I posted this in another thread, but can't remember.
It depends on how the port is damaged. If it just pulls completely loose from the board, solder joints intact, then it's a known issue. Replacement will be given through S&R.
If the solder joints are broken or the charging pins are bent, it's considered customer abuse and an insurance claim will have to be filed.
The ports cannot be replaced in a service center. I work in an ASC & the service centers do not solder anything back on to the board so replacement is the only option.

I'm curious what third party protection you used and how helpful it is in a situation like a damaged speaker or mic -- I had a damaged speaker and Sprint turned it around quickly at the store level which made me somewhat pleased with their service even if the in-store associates were awful (one was standing in the middle of the store and swearing up a store about how ignorant his last customer was and how disinterested he was in talking to them because they weren't buying a new contract). Sadly my mother didn't have the same experience with a cracked screen and actually gave up and just purchased a new Epic for less.
As much as my mother's experience was frustrating I don't know that I put it entirely on Sprint -- at my last job I did some work servicing PCs at a couple AT&T and Verizon stores -- from what I saw all the employees were pretty much the bottom of the sales barrel. They're rude, their conduct is horrible, and they have no customer service skills. They care about the next sale and nothing else.
I've been pretty pessimistic about the level of service in the industry as a whole as a result. If I'm wrong and there's protection plans that are worth it I'd love to hear about it.
-X
Well I believe their policy is to refer all cracked screens to the insurance which you need the $100 deductible. Seeing as you went in for a damaged ear piece. I can see their logic in the matter.
To work on the ear piece they need to take the phone apart. Seeing as the screen is already has a tiny crack. It wouldn't take much to further damage it. Why take the risk?
If they were to break the screen even more in the process of trying to fix the ear piece. Then the customer would blame the sprint store and want a new phone for free.
Seems to be logical for me. But this is just my opinion

Try a different store. The store around me replaced the screen for free once after I had water damaged it accidentally, which broke the screen. Idk if they would've had I told them about the water damage, but that shouldn't matter. They also replaced my phone for free when I damaged one of the battery contact things that keeps it in place. I bet most of the stores in the area aren't as nice, but as long as you find one like the one I go to, they'll fix it for you.

When my cousin busted his epic the digitizer and glass was intact, the screen underneath was cracked and the corporate sprint repair center told me their policies changed because a repair tech cut his hand on a broken glass. I told him that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, if anything the tech should have been disciplined for not wearing proper PPE, not take it out on the entire sprint customer base.
He agreed and told me to try a non corporate store

Exactly. You gamble that the phone has to break within 20 months or whatever, or you loose on the TEP deal (don't remember how much mine was before I cancelled it). Sprint wouldn't have done anything to fix my Epic anyway since the account shows that I'm using a Diamond, *chuckle*.

Sprint M&Ps regarding S&R
Provided your handset doesn't have more than 2 cracks on the screen with both cracks no longer than 1" and no other physical damage to the handset, the Sprint TC should have replaced your screen without referring you to Asurion. The TC or LTC need to go into RSP on their PC station and reread the MP&Ps pertaining to S&R. I would escalate to the store's SM and if you don't get resolution from him/her, tell the SM you want to skip his/or her DM and talk directly to the ARD who is right about the DM.
I arrived at my 82 yr old relative's apartment 1/2 hr after some teen girls had 'asked to use the home phone' to report an emergency, they made their fake sos call, + managed to steal the cellphone!..............we reported it stolen + next day at sprint store the sales mgr replaced it w/ a much nicer model at no cost............true story.

TEP has always been pretty much useless. Why pay that much monthly and they still charge a deductible, plus you might get a refurb! I've seen good Epics on craigslist for that $100 they want to charge you...
My phone recently got sparkly clean, and broken, in the washing machine.
Cowboom.com has them for $80. They're finishing around $110 on ebay. So, there's 2 options where you'd even have some recourse if the ESN was bad, or whatever.
So, yeah, insurance really only makes sense if you think you'll break something in the time it takes to unbox a top of the line phone, activate it, and get it to your car.
As far as I can tell you're paying almost $200 no matter what, and $300 if you ever use it. You can get a Galaxy S II for $260 right now.
Now, obviously there are some people who it worked out for, so I don't need to hear how you got 15 "free" phones. It's a bad bet for most instances.
