Has Dell fixed the camera on this phone? - Venue Pro General

The DVP was always the one phone I wanted to own but with all its issues I went ahead and bought an Omnia 7 (now updated to Mango).
I've heard Dell has released a new firmware that addresses all the initial issues so I'm wondering if:
a) all the issues are indeed fixed
b) the camera has been improved as it was pretty much terrible
I would appreciate very honest, objective answers so that I know what to expect.
Cheers

a) The stability issues have now been fixed. My phone is now very reliable. (Unfortunately, does not support the new wifi hotspot feature, however).
b) The camera seems to be improved. There's a thread with some pictures below.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1206192
One of the problems seems to be that the camera doesn't have image stabilisation hardware (which the Samsung phones do have). The suggestion I have found most useful to take better pictures is to tap the screen lightly to take a picture instead of pressing the camera button. (Pressing the camera button shakes the phone and the pictures sometimes turn out blurry).
Also, tweaking the settings helps get better results.
In my opinion, the camera is okay, not great but not terrible either. I think your Samsung will probably take better pictures though.

Thanks, some of these pictures actually look great. My issue is there isn't a new phone announced yet with 32GB storage so I might end up going for a DVP rather than a new and shiny device. We'll see.

camera is worthless.

Deep down I believe you, that phone should really have been a gem.
Sent from my Samsung Omnia 7 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App

Indeed, it needs more effort to keep still when taking a picture e.g. holding your elbows in to your chest and holding the phone with both hands. Also, easier in bright light than dim light as the phone needs to be held still for less time, so less chance of blurry pictures.
If you already have an Omnia, I'd suggest waiting.
The screen, thickness (i.e. bulk) and camera are probably worse on the DVP. The keyboard and storage capacity are better. So it's probably a side-step rather than an upgrade.
I've read about one Mango device so far that appears to be 32GB (unfortunately, Japan / Taiwan only atm):
http://www.phoneshop.co.uk/2011/09/fujitsu-toshiba-is12t-smartphone-review/
It's possible others might be unofficially upgradeable to 32GB - will know once people start using them. The new phones probably have the more powerful GPU too.

Download the Picture Lab app. You can take pictures within the app. It also has an overlay grid and most importantly an image stabilization feature using the phone's gyroscope.

Thanks - looks like a useful app. Unfortunately, I don't think the DVP has a gyroscope.
http://www.wpcentral.com/no-gyroscope-access-current-windows-phones-only-new-mango-devices2
Looks like the new Mango devices can optionally contain a gyroscope, so will probably be easier to get a good picture.

So really they need to release a DVP2.

I am really skeptical of another dvp
While wpcentral reported a rumor of a dell wrigley for india, looking at the specs of the device are really placeholders for a device that is EXTREMELY OLD and it doesn't match the specs from the leak. Furthermore, very reliable contact indicated the wrigley does not EXIST
Unless there was a change in 3 months (which there may be) that ramped up manufacturing of a new device, is is unlikely the device exists...

okay you submitted the tip
and your source is? because (thanks to beta testing) I got some pretty high tips there. I'm not invalidating your sleuthing, but if you take a look at every single page, it is a down grade in specs
Now it is likely that dell is focusing on developing countries in Asia, which is possible (as shown in Japan) but as far as the windows and tablet side, a lot has sort of been scrapped.
And again, it was reiterated in July that the Dell Wrigley does not exist. Further, Dell was making changes to its mobility and tablet strategy to best meet a more diverse demographic.
I'll make sure by dropping a few emails though
Edit
Email dropped. It DOES NOT exist. It's fake! Sorry bro

After the issues I had getting this phone replaced (took over a month) and the fact Dell has completely closed off all of it's North American call centers and all we can get now is india.
Even if there was a DVP2 and it was the best phone on the market bar none, with no problems at all. I wouldn't buy it.

Funny How my experience w/ Dell is so different. I first bought my Brand new DVP back in Jan.'11 Had problems in Mar.'11 and Dell replaced it with-in the week.. Then Recently(days ago) My DVP had problem that it kept restarting whenever I slide the KB, Dell Replaced it with-in 3days.
No Extra cost.

All i'm gonna say is you are lucky.

I haven't had any problems with mine at all and it was manufactured 30th March 2011. I even forced it to upgrade to mango and haven't had any issues.
Even put a generic class10 32gb microSD card in it with no issues so far.

The camera is actually quite good now. Possibly even the best wp7 camera, with the exception of flash photos.
Here are some comparison photos of the DVP and my HD7.

The quality is good if you're a statue. I do not think it has an image stabilization. A slight movement causes the photo to be blurry.

The DVP's camera does not compete at all favorably with that of the Mango HTC phones either on quality or features. The new phones feature superior optics (f2.2 lenses), and burst and panorama modes. On top of that, the Titan's is also 8 megapixel.
And once the lights go down, it gets even worse. The DVP's flash is utterly anemic, and introduces a yellow banding effect onto pictures.
The DVP's might be better than the HD7's, but there can't be any serious claim to the best WP7 camera.

[Q] Should I ?

I've picked up the Galaxy S so many times it's untrue. I like the screen and the speed and the open environment. I've very tempted to buy one SIM free and unlocked.
But ... and this isn't a troll ... I've read many comments about the GPS being unreliable and inaccurate (and that it locks up) and at £400 ($620 US) I'd need to be sure that it's going to work. For me, having access to the GPS is one of the best features now that locational services are expanding rapidly.
I've got an N95 which has lasted me for about three years and is still IMHO a good phone. I've also got an iPhone 3G that, really, feels too slick. Too sickly. Of course, their store is good. IOS4 also seems to have made it a dog performance wise.
I know that there are apparently hundreds of thousands of these so I'd expect to see adverse comments but given that Samsung is said to be offering a 'fix' soon, it seems like there really is an issue.
My N95 has lasted a long time and if I buy another premium phone it will need to do the same. I wonder if I should go for it or wait to see what the reputed HTC Desire HD has to offer in a few weeks time ? If it has the larger screen and double LED flash it could be a real winner if the price is right (not more than £450).
It won't last that long. The build quality is awful. I've had mine one month and the home button is already showing signs of wear. My N95 is still fine compared to this and my iPhone 3G is much better quality. I really regret buying this phone.

It does feel very flimsy but I've been telling myself that instead, it's 'light'
I still like the N95. I think that it still feels so good because Nokia did such a good job all that time ago - wi-fi, GPS, amazing camera resolution and lens, 3G, front-facing camera, etc, etc.
TBH, I've also looked at the iPhone 4. We've already bought one and yet again, the screen is dreamy and it's very fast with good apps but as a programmer in a former life, I've started to learn Java and have been playing with the Android SDK. I've only scratched the surface and I'm really quite excited about how much of the system resources are easily accessed with the APIs.
Hi,
i also thinking about to buy the galaxy 9000. The other phone is the HTC Desire.
The Desire has Android 2.2, the Galaxy the better display but maybe a GPS problem.
I should also have added that, I reckon, being a more recent device, the new (all speculation, of course) HTC Desire HD could end up with OS updates beyond those for the Samsung. Maybe those who know the companies better than me would disagree though.
Sorry, but my englis is not the best one. Can you repeat your answer in more easier english?
It's always nice practice to just lay it all out and weigh all the pros and cons of each device. That's what I did and I listed to much PROS in favor of the SGS. I'm not much of a GPS user anyway.
The GPS issues have been quite overstated and only really apply to aGPS when satellites are unavailable because you are either indoors or in a large city with buildings everywhere. They also only really effected the US models, and not the international I9000 or the Canadian version. I bought the first one when the store opened on launch day and I have not had any problems whatsoever with the GPS, it works pefectly, much better than the GPS on my old first gen galaxy and my gf's htc magic. Note that I am also running the original firmware.
Also, the aGPS problem for the US Galaxies has been figured out and mostly fixed by Samsung, I believe a couple of the models might still be waiting on a firmware update in Sept that will fix it for good. So I wouldn't let the GPS sway you, most people that are having problems are just not smart enough to enable the aGPS (it is disabled by default). Always take online rants with a grain of salt as often it is just the person doing something wrong.
As far as this phone vs the Desire?
CPU/GPU: Faster on the Galaxy (GPU is claimed to be up to 3x faster)
Screen: Flat out win for the galaxy, no comparison
Video: Galaxy = 720p, to my knowledge the desire does 480, possibly 720 with froyo?
Vid Output: Galaxy= HDMI, Composite, DLNA, Desire = none, maybe composite through 3.5mm jack?
Keyboard: Swype>Sense Keybo
Front Cam: Galaxy=Yes, Desire=No
Storage: Galaxy 16GB, Desire 0.5GB
Bluetooth: Galaxy = 3.0, Desire = 2.1
Wifi: Galaxy = N Desire = G
The Desire having 2.2 is not really a plus as the Galaxy is getting it next month and unofficial roms are already out.
The only positives I can find for the desire is the camera flash and I guess a matter of taste if you like it's design over the Galaxy, the Galaxy is a fair bit thinner though, and not much larger overall considering the screen size difference. You could say the camera flash is an advantage for the Desire, but the night mode works quite well on the Galaxy and if you've ever seen a pic taken with a mobile phone w/ led flash at night you'll know that it really doesn't help much anyways. It is more useful as a flashlight. I was dead set on the desire before the galaxy was announced, and Samsung easily changed my mind.
I had a N95 for 6 months. It just stopped working. They told me I had wet the thing. I hadn't. They told me I probably had it in the bathroom when showering, and the vapor could wet the thing. That I don't remember.
I like the sgs phone so far, and my gps works pretty ok and I never flashed any rom.
I'm loving this phone. I have a macbook pro and still like apple's computers.
Signs of wear on the home button? Do you mean light scratches? Scratches are unavoidable when you have shiny surface. The old iPods scratch ridiculously easily.

After one month it is unacceptable to have a plastic button so scratched that it is matte. The quality of the plastics use on that thing is just plain below par.

I was also on the fence about buying a SGS. all this talk of bad build finish and inferior plastics is being hyped by the FEW not the many . Jausse`s link has Bad and good reviews so using that as corroboration is just nonsense . My contract is nearly up and I have spent the last month looking at reviews , videos and forums to help me decide wether to buy the SGS or the Desire and the SGS IMHO wins hands down. I`ll get the other half a desire as she loves sense Ui and thats the only reason I won`t be getting 2. One final thing the SGS has gorilla glass which means the screen is as tough as a phone screen can get. http://www.corning.com/news_center/news_releases/2010/2010082301.aspx
I bought the galaxy and I fine the phone amazing... What is wrong with the galaxy can be fixed by firmware updates unlike other phones you have to put up with it... Come september I'll have 2.2 on here and no gps issues (not that I've had any to begin with) here is where the phone is lacking: decent voip solution and decent middle east gps software. Both are software issues and can be fixed as for the build I've had mine about a month too and there are no marks on it the screen is not scratched even slightly and the home button is perfect I don't know how you managed to damage it in one month :s
This is my opinion and I've been using it very very intensely with wifi mms bluetooth (with headset too) developing apps calls tonnes of app usage too till now everything is working wonderfully
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
iPhones get their home button's scratched up too, along with almost every other phone. It's a button though. Does it really affect your usability? It's time people start asking themselves what they wish to do with their device though, and how they use it. The back is strong (despite being plastic), and the touch panel is scratch resistant too. And yes, seen plenty of scratched up iPhones.
Why should you care how the home button looks? If the appearance of your phone affects your pride or your chances of picking up, perhaps you need to think things through, or you should buy the HTC legend instead..
I don't think whether the plastic gets scratches says ANYTHING about the quality used (besides, only the button and back seem to be plastic). Either way, the back can be replaced easily, so that's irrelevant, and unless you suspect the button will be destroyed by scratching, I don't think it will affect many people. So personally, whether the button scratches wouldn't affect my decision personally.. But that is just an opinion.
But I'd agree, you aren't trolling.. And people need to stop confusing trolling and negative opinions.
I've had mine for almost a month and there is no sign of wear or scratches whatsoever. Not sure what you're expecting as plastic will scratch, but there are numerous youtube videos demonstrating the durability of the screen. The home button may not be covered with the same gorilla glass so if you're keeping the phone in pockets with keys and change, it will get scratched. However I take relatively good care of mine and it has no scratches on the front or the back, I keep it in my pocket and set it on a variety of surfaces.

that was very interesting, i wonder why HTC Desire got knocked out
i know Iphone4 had bad rep due the Antennae-gate issue, but Desire is not that bad of a phone, it's in par with SGS in regards to bugs and features
the only worth while difference between Desire vs. SGS is just the screen.
heck if they pitted Desire vs SGS i'll be quite sure Desire would have won, no complains about lag fix, or gps, just complains about proximity sensor issues, screens, HTC sense bugs, phone volumen and speaker issues, cpu speed on games, facedown speaker phone feature bug, pocket bug, and... well i'm sure i'm forgetting a few from the short time i was using the HTC Desire

You are very wrong my friend. Very. I had both and chose the x10 over it, sold the sgs and got my wife the icrap but the x10 has really strong points. Very stable, very good camera, amazing design and build, crisp screen with better resolution than sgs and better for text, flash light, led notification light and quite a bit more things.. the sgs feels cheap and light wich makes it feel even cheaper, lots of bugs, gps problems, shut down problems, no flash light, ****ty camera, tint issues, less resolution(can see pixels from a mile away) whites suck, its really ugly and for the week that we had it . 3 people ask me if its an icrap. And i can go on...

it's true about the bugs we have on the SGS, it's still going through its polishing phase, but from the sneak peak we've seen on Froyo, most of the wish list items are already in there. Although the gps and lag issue haven't been confirmed yet, but those 2 are just part of the long list of upgrades they have done for the phone, what i like the most about the upcoming changes with Froyo is the new BT stack, now we can finally use all the other BT devices that were not supported on Eclair
i would be interested in seeing a picture taken by the X10 to compare it to the SGS
the only grief i've got about SGS is Kies and the horrible volume on the HD 720p recording.
if some one can release an utility to allow configuration of the bandwidth and bitrate used for recoding then it'll be a killer.
as there is nothing we can do about the Kies software
I just say missing recovery mode...
Samsung support is still pretty crappy.
It's not that long on the market and you start to fear for future upgrades...wtf

[Make it happen] HTC 8X (World) or Lumia 920 (AT&T)?

Alright, we all know what the drill is. i dropped my TITAN II and now i can't wait to get a replacement for it. I have been buying the flagship device of each wave of Windows Phone from HTC so i think i can try something new as well.
I know you probably thinking "This is another bullsh!t thread that as for the opinion and will end between a post or 2" , but please help me out here.
Coming down to the 920 vs 8X, a lot of poles has been made and look like the flavor goes to the 920. But i think i should take it from my own opinion, not just critic and others people thoughts.
1. Carrier : Not a big deal, i am on AT&T , GoPhone service to be specific, but i do travel international sometime. 8X get a little advantage here , but it is not hard to get an unlocked code for the Lumia either.
2. Storage: Personally, 16GB is enough for me, 32GB is nice but not a MUST.
3. Color : I don't give a sh!t, flat black is what i am getting either one of them.
4. Screen Size : A mix. I started with the HD2 4.3", and HD7 with 4.3" as well before i went full 2 years with 4.7" (HTC TITAN and TITAN II). 4.5 might be a smaller drop from 4.7" but 4.3 is not too bad either.
5. Camera : I am no photographer but sometime do demand some nice and clean shots. There are a lot of mixed review for the PureView Technology on the Lumia , as well as a lot of review said the 8X Camera is somewhat equal or worse than the One X. <= I don't really know, you guys help me here.
6. Battery : Both Non-Removable (Pain in the ass for sure), the Lumia is slightly higher but the usage is kind of the same as the 8X according to some reviews (due to the larger screen).
7. Performance : Both phones are matched...
8. Audio performance: *In the Dust*, i don't trust whatever Beats made and i am questioning the Dolby effect from Nokia too. I own myself a pretty good earbuds as well as some decent headphones.
9. Support: Unclear. Microsoft has been revealed about the way they update the phone is OTA (over-the-air), suspecting to by-pass carrier testing (which takes forever). if not, the World Version of 8X wins hand down.
10. Price : The No-Contract AT&T Locked Lumia stock at $450, the World-Unlocked version can rank up to $800, which not reasonable. the World Version of 8X is around $550-$600 right now, which is affordable for me.

11. History: The history really back HTC up for me. Although they said Windows Phone 8 won't even have a chance to have Custom ROM but who knows? Unless i hear it myself from the DFT. And the history of World Phone HTC really back the opinion up. HTC phones usually get the Custom ROM/ HSPL first.
They seem to be so evenly matched to me. Lose some and win some at both phones. Please let me know your opinion. Thanks.
For the Camera - it will depend on the situations in which you mainly take photos. For me it is quite often at parties or otherwise in the evenings which IS a situation in which the PureView actually performs better then anything else out there at the moment. If it's mainly well lit shots at least until Nokia tweaks the software it seems we'll see pretty similar performance.
For Sound we have not really seen any measurements of the devices yet but given that Dolby and Beats are on board I believe it should be safe to assume that both devices should at least offer decent quality with optimizations turned off (I tend to believe that's the way to listen to music the way the artists intended because that is why they recorded it that way).
On Support I actually disagree with you - Nokia has been a lot more active when it comes to Firmware Updates and additionally has continuously worked on getting exclusive Apps and other improvements to their phones. I don't see that changing anytime soon. Even if the current Apps don't offer you an advantage yet the next one might - meanwhile we've seen HTC not doing much in that regard.
Weight has been mentioned by some as a criterion to decide between the 8X and the 920 - it might be an issue for you but the additional 20 g over the Titan 1 don't strike me as that big a problem.

On the support side, i was mentioning about the Firmware Update (not necessary apps from the OEM). Do they push that without confirmation/testing from AT&T?
HTC also rolls out like almost monthly firmware and ROM upgrade when i still got my World TITAN, but that does not apply with the AT&T version.
I have the HTC and I love it. I've heard from someone who owned both Nokia and HTC (someone at MS) He said he liked the Nokia as a daily driver because of the bigger screen and said that it had better battery life, but liked to use the HTC whenever he went for a run or something of that nature because of it being so slim and light.
-HTC has a lower screen resolution but a higher PPI
-Nokia has a MUCH nicer main camera IMO, however the wide angle front facing on the HTC is really nice as well.
-HTC told me that the 8X would be just as loud as the Surround that I had before, however I didn't really find this to be true, the built in speakers are definitely good enough though. I haven't done a sound test on a Nokia.
I did get an OTA update already however it was really small 1MB<. Someone from Microsoft was telling me that they will have a program that will allow you to receive updates directly from them (kinda like the Nexus) but I wasn't clear on when that was happening (or if it had already happened)
If I had a choice between the two (The 8X was given to me) I would have gotten the Nokia.
Hope that helped at all!

Thanks for the reply!
- Do you have more info about the OTA Update for the phone? Are you using the 8X AT&T Version or the World Unlocked Version? Thanks!
PS: it is just still my main concern about the update progress. I have own both AT&T HTC TITAN and TITAN II and i know AT&T is an a$$hole in pushing the update out for the device. It is a deal-breaker for me as a power user and a dev also.

Well Microsoft did say there would be an "enthusiast program", essentially a way for someone who wants updates as soon as possible, to get them, regardless of carrier/phone. Of course until more details about this program are given, we have no idea if it supports all phones or carriers or what restrictions or what not, but I'm inclined to believe that this program should help solve the "where is my update?" issue.
Otherwise, I still think the Lumia 920 is the better choice overall. They are both great phones, but the Lumia 920 just has more going for it, not to mention Nokia's undying support of Windows Phone and their devices. In the short time they've been with Windows phone, they've impressed me with their support and dedication to the platform, more so than HTC has in the past 10-or-so years.
I'll tell ya how the 920 is when I get it today~
Go with the 920!!!
Better camera, better wireless charging, better quality ( NOKIAS are like a Tonka ), more memory and exclusive APPS AND GPS.
My HTC 8x is att branded but it came unlocked so Im not sure where it will be pulling its updates from.
If build quality is a concern, I dropped my htc last night and the screen cracked. It wasn't a big fall either (was laying in my lap and I got up so it fell). Fortunately for me however Im getting it fixed through HTC for free
Hopefully the enthusiast program will be coming out shortly, I really wished I had asked for a time table when the guy was talking to me about that.

LOL.
Well, my bro prjkthack just got the 920, i am going to wait for the "go" code from him...
it has been a minus from the 8X for me because i actually saw a review from Engadget today and see the 8X is much more smaller than the TITAN II, much smaller than i thought and i also notice that the bezel on the top of the phone is a lot more than i expected...
Unless i can hand it somewhere for myself, i will have to pass HTC Flagship this wave. The HTC Zenith has been DOA for this wave...

Yeah that's a good idea. Everything is going to be much small than the Titan lol. If it were me I'd go with the Nokia too, so good choice.
I'd pick the lumia 920. Only be wise if you're goma use your camera alot, especially at night, the 920 will win there in low lighting. Plus you get double the storage at a cheaper price point. The weight isn't as bad as people have made it seem and the Nokia screen is better for watching videos on. It is sharper than the Titan2's screen, and you know personally how good that screen is...

Thanks guys.
I snatched a 920 today, AT&T version, little bit high off bore for the Without contract, from AT&T, Cyan.
To be exactly, this would be my first time using a flag-ship not from HTC for Windows Phone series... let's see how it goes...
I will wait and see what would HTC bring to the table with the HTC Zenith for the 2nd Wave...
But look like i change phone yearly, lol.

Good call. Enjoy the 920. Especially when Nokia releases that software tweak to improve the camera in daylight conditions. I am a big HTC fan and it does take some time to get used to a non HTC WP flagship, but as it stands, the 920 is the most premium mix of tech out for gen 1 WP 8.
I think HTC did the right thing by holding off a big screen WP 8. They need a quad core monster in WP 8 to sell. Hopefully it will come out with the Adreno 320 GPU. That would be a killer device in WP for 2013, especially with a 4.7" screen...

Haha, sure man. I will do a review as i used to do with the TITAN vs the HD7. HTC sure as hell did a right thing with the HTC TITAN (4.7 inch + metal body), they need to keep doing that.
I have been teased from the boys on the Design Department that they are working on some sort of "TITAN III" , although i am not allowed to dig deeper on that. I have been waiting for that but seem it is DOA for the 1st Wave, and i believe the 2nd Wave won't hit until next holiday season, so i think i will bite the bullet and take Nokia for a ride.
Basically, sure the Software on both Device gonna be awesome, the main concern is how the Nokia behave, which i don't have any clue yet. But time will tell.
Thanks for the advice. :good:

Cannot wait for that review. I picked up a Titan for repairs for a friend as a favor and just may end up sending him my Focus S instead and keeping the Titan as a spare.... I too am looking to jump on the Lumia bandwagon, but will go with the 810 since I'm in T.Mobile. Rest assurance if HTC puts out a nicely designed quad core 4.7"+ monster with WP8 in Gen 2, I will switch back...

Did they give you a sim card in the box? If they did I'd just have them activate that card and then you just get an adapter to use in any spare phones using regular SIM...

With the reviews getting in are you still getting your XZ?

I'm curious if there is an affect on your buying decision after reading the reviews.
I so want this phone but all this talk about the display not being up to par has put some doubt in my mind now as to whether I go through with purchasing the Z. GSM arena and Phone Arena share similar views regarding the display, which I wasn't expecting.
I will be taking a look at the device at my local phones4u, and if I find the screen to be disappointing I will unfortunately cancel my order. I really really really hope this wont be the case though.
Yeah wavering here...

What is there in those reviews that would put me off from buying one?
Problems with camera images? Not that big of a deal, I don't make photos with my phone for a living. Lag? I doubt there is any. Battery life? People report a whole day of medium to heavy usage, which is what I get from my Galaxy S3 anyway. Build quality? It's waterproof, I don't mind having to open flaps every time I want to plug in my headset.
What else is there?
Where is the option "i dont care about reviews, i want it and im gonna get it regardless" ?
I dont trust reviews. Note 2 and S3 were reviewed as the best phones even - and i'm really disappointed by those two. It's funny how reviewers sometimes ignore obvious flaws about one phone, but riot about a tiny detail in another. Reviews are not objective - so i don't really care about them. It's nice to read and compare opinions, but i always prefer to just get the phone and decide for myself.
So unless at least 5-10 review say something really bad about the battery ( like not lasting a full day even on light use, which is not the case ) i'm not going to even think about cancelling.

I think most are worried about the screen, every thing else seems okay/perfect (some may not like the camera)
I have a pre-order for mine but I am a little worried.. The camera from what I've seen looks perfectly decent, and it's bound to be better than my HOX which kinda sucks compared to my last iPhone. My one concern is the display which is a pretty big deal breaker, I actually had a quick play with one in a Three store yesterday and the display was very wishy washy (Even after I had turned it down from max brightness). Originally everyone had said this was purely an issue with pre-production panels, but after the reviews claiming to be on retail devices this had worried me even more.
Think I'm going to pop into a P4U store as well to have a play, maybe there is more chance of those being full retail units seeing as they're available a little after.. Who knows!
I'm still getting it, I've seen the phone in a couple of three stores and didn't see any problems with the display, but then I'm not particularly picky.
I'm still getting it, my main reasons are:
Camera. I know Sony make decent camera phones, I have a Note 2 which is fairly decent, not brill in low light scenarios, not as good as my HOX was.
Build quality. My last two phones, S3 and Note 2...enough said!
Screen. I miss my HOX LCD screen, AMOLEDS are just a bit too false!
Size. My current phone is the Note 2, it's the only negative side of it, it's too big for one handed use nothing else. Looking forward to getting a phone that I can use with one hand comfortably again.
So I'm still getting it!

Screen aside I am getting concerned about the camera performance, I don't expect it to completely match up to the 920 but I was hoping it would be reasonably close.
Reviews are irrelevant. Go play with the phone at a Sony store once it becomes available and decide for yourself.
Reviewers have their own agendas...
I was planning on getting the ZL if it came out before the end of February or first week of March..... However Sony announced that Canada isn't getting the ZL till April.... And on top of that all of the issues with the inconsistent screen reviews have made me decide to just wait . Since Sony decided to force me to wait till April the logical thing to do is wait for info on the s4/Optimus g pro/ m7 / xphone, and reevaluate the market at that time
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
I am still getting it. Lets hear reviews of international version first aT feb 28, and lets see.
Really wanted to get this phone, but it's not coming to Canada until April. That's just too far away and sadly I am forced to go another route. I really did want this phone though...
the display doesn't look bad in this vid(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFEzXilA8B8) IMO, but why is bottom bar gray instead of black (where the home, and back button are)?
Was quite iffy since anything that offers a fHD resolution and no 3000mA+ battery doesn't get me interested much. But I guess this is a dealbreaker for me. Anywho, good luck to those who've ordered this!
I will wait for a full GSMarena review, then wait for it to appear in stores here and go test it myself and compare. The only problem for me could be bad color contrast.
Not amazing camera? - No problem for me, digital cameras are not amazing even if you stuck 9999 megapixels in them and super xmrozksda sensors. I take maybe 3 pics a month and those usually go to instagram where horrible filters and compression will make it look like a picture from 2006 anyway. If I want to make good pics I'll take my camera (or a friend will).
Bad viewing angles? - Again, the only time it will be a problem is when I let my mates to play games on it and will want to see how they are doing.
I just need a new phone kinda ASAP and Sony is releasing soon. The new HTC could be interesting for me but I'm not sure when it's coming out. I hate Samsung phones so GS4 is not an option either.
^Why do you 'hate' Samsung? Color contrast of SAMLOED I'm guessing
Getting the ZL, but it's more or less the same phone for the most part. Reviews aren't affecting my excitement to get it one bit. Can't wait for it to finally hit Canada!
Getting the ZL also. I know our country was one of the mentioned ones to get this device on the 1st quarter but if it would reach till april then mostlikely HTC M7 would prolly steal 50% of my decision to go back to sony. I love Sense UI and not Sony UI but I decided to ditch HTC Butterfly and go with sony but if they let HTC M7 pass them again then bye2 and I'll stick with HTC. Sad because Sony was my 1st android phone coming from nokia when they ditched maemo OS over microsoft.

[Q] LG G2 or wait.

Hello I'm having the hardest time deciding if I should wait to upgrade since the galaxy s5 and htc one/two are right around the corner or if I should just get the G2 for Christmas. The G2 seems like a great phone but it also seems to have it's fair share of issues, I'm worried that something much better might come out within a month or two. Anyway just looking for advice thanks!

I've been reading through some of the forums and heard that external speakerphone has very low decibel levels, camera video is poor quality due to shaky focus, and the knock-ON feature doesn't work reliably. One other thing that concerns me is android development behind the phone since it's not that popular. Also the design could be better but the screen is gorgeous.
My 2c. There is no perfect phone. IPhone, Samsung, lg, HTC, they all have their quirks and disappointments. But it's matter of if you can find a way to overcome it.
Camera is fantastic. And you being here means you are willing to do more than just complain. Root, remove bloat, update camera app. Knock 3 times instead of 2.
And personally if you do more than just play with your phone, ie use for work. Custom ROM other than modified stock ROM will just be way too buggy.
My honest opinion is that they are really 3 viable Android phones out there. The Sony Z, nexus5 and G2. After having gone through several Samsung phones, I'll never buy another Samsung.
Between the 3 above get the lg if battery life is important to you. Because that is the only thing you absolutely cannot change.

These are all good points, just one more question then, if roms you think will be too buggy how is lg at updating to the latest version of android?
LG G2 is an outstanding choice for now, IMHO.
I realized that no matter how attractive a new phone's reviews or announcements get, there would always be a few minor issues or dislikes rising up after a couple of weeks hands-on playing. Phones are not designed by end users and LG team got to stick with their budgets and timeline.
G2 camera appeared very impressive me. "Optical" image stabilizer is a bonus point making the difference - simply with default app and settings, it can make awesome low-light/indoor photos. I was able to take a few decent photos when lights were really dim. Read some posts about its focusing speed as capturing moving objects in low lighting; no chance to try that yet but that task sounded quite a challenge to any phone cameras.
The only two issues caught my attention in daily uses are the screen flickering happening in certain places caused by the so called content adaptive back-lighting, and the brightness sensor output. Both are only noticeable in low-light settings and easy to work around them. Some said the content adaptive lighting is due to JB 4.22 OS. Hope a firmware/OS update will soon refine the g2.

I was in the same boat as you 2 weeks ago, but AT&T changing their prices on the family plan forced me to get the LG G2. Some of the concerns I had before getting it are somewhat still there, especially the camera performance in low light. I haven't had any battery drain issues yet and so far battery life has been fantastic. back buttons aren't that bad, the placement makes sense sometimes, especially when you are on a call. knock on/off feature is great as well but as others have said, it doesn't work 100% of the time. Overall, it's a fantastic phone & i'm glad I got it.
Don't torture yourself by waiting. This phone is a beast...AND I've yet to install a custom ROM!

Yes, the speaker is a little bit tinny, but it's not that quiet, I'd say it's fine. Camera video focus problems happen occasionally, nothing that a camera firmware update won't fix. Knock On works fine when you get the hang of it. This phone has a bunch of ROMs, but to be honest - you don't really need them. I got this phone and I left it completely stock and just rooted it - it's THAT good.
What's wrong with the design? I think it's a good looking phone.

What's wrong with the design? I think it's a good looking phone.

So it seems like it's an amazing phone but how do you think it will compete going into 2014??

Yes, the speaker is a little bit tinny, but it's not that quiet, I'd say it's fine. Camera video focus problems happen occasionally, nothing that a camera firmware update won't fix. Same here stock rooted; was thinking about a prettier launcher replacement but like to stay with some of the stock features. Always use the knock on without touching the power button now - very convenient design.
Increase speaker volume - two xda posts about an easy fix by editing the file snd_soc_msm_Taiko:

I just push the back button to increase in-call volume to max when needed.

So are you trying to say i should wait? or buy? I'm feeling the vibe from both from what you said, which was very interesting.

That was just purely experience sharing for your reference. You'll get a great phone in either case.
My plan-renewal credit was available since July but htc one or s4 didn't make the urge for me to upgrade the phone, until last month I grabbed the G2 with a price tag of $50.
