well, not all of them, just the safe stuff like UI, memory management, etc.
and maybe a safe overclocking tool too

ya,,,i also hope that,,,maybe they release it with new firmware on september #hope
like X8 first launching, SE build new kernel & firmware so long
we'll have working camera then this is great!
Back in the spring of earlier this year, Sony Ericsson announced and released the option to unlock the boot loader for 2011 Xperia™ phones. We then moved on to explain how to build your own Linux kernel. As a third step, we have now supported the FreeXperia group. The reason for this is that we firmly believe in the openness of Android™, and we are really impressed by the huge activity shown in our products. By being supportive and open, we hope to both learn from the open community, and also share knowledge when that is possible.

Better late than never I guess, and maybe if S.E had paid attention to the "activity" when the FreeXperia group got started on the X10 the Xperia range would have been a lot more desirable to those who love to mod.
If all the manufacturers don't pay attention to what goes on at XDA development wise, more fool them, as the devs here continue to show up those that actually get paid to do it for a living.

Kudos SE - differentiating yourselves from the pack is a great USP.
This is a very brave move and one that will enhance the latest phones and platform appeal.

Sorry if this has been asked elsewhere, but I'm wondering if the 2.1 release will allow devs a better chance at effectively getting the X10 fully rooted? Ie: will they be able to see what changes the update is doing and use that to hopefully get us to 2.2?
Man, the most important thing is NOT to root (it is! rooted) the phone, but to crack the bootloader!
Once the loader gets cracked you won't want to root anymore cuz you probably simply use a (pre-rooted) custom ROM.
But IF SE changes anything about the bootloader it will probably be even harder than now to crack it... :-(
Hope the devs will get it one day...!!!

Problem is, not many people have X10 so, not enough devs for good brainstorming.
With less people involved, development is slow compared with other smartphones.

Err I guess thats what I meant. Will we be able to easily crack the bootloader using the update coming out (hopefully this year?)
Can you discuss 2.1 in the existing 2.1 thread
Okay the bootloader hasn't been cracked but don't let that get you down because the great Dev's have been working on it and now there may even be a workaround.
Bin4ry has managed to get his own kernel to load with custom image included, and although at this early stage the touchscreen and usb don't work this is definitely 1 big step closer to opening up our beloved x10's
Update - custom kernal has been loaded and touch screens working, confirming the workaround
I changed the title to better reflect what's been done

Wow, although I can't believe what I am reading if that is true...wow great news and thank you devs for your hard work

good luck to our saviours =)
"almost" is such a big thing... maybe there are some other problems coming, when TS and USB are fixed...
i hope i'm wrong
PS: don't forget bin4ry as VERY good dev i would say one of the best! he wrote that he wants to buy a newer phoneto play around but we won't forget him and his work
Sent from my X10 using XDA Premium App
Wow this is awesome to hear!!!! I'm really excited to see how this unfolds
I believe that the bootloader is crashed out at some level, then the custom kernel is loaded, so it's more of a workaround but should offer the same end.
And definitely big thanks to All the Dev's that have kept working on solutions...

this is really good news to hear after almost of year of our dev team hacking away at this monster.
I do hope that Bin4ry will not get that new phone too soon
Moved as not android development
And way start this thread? If binr4y have news he can let us know? This thread is useless, and the information you provide us is already in the bootloader Dev thread.

As for this being spam, no its not as the news is in the Dev's only forum while this is for general public, plus I don't think it's doing harm.
If Bin4ry has issues with including his breakthrough then I'm sure it will be deleted

i'm happy with the news but it's kind of sad to read how just a little step after all these months make us all excited;when i just read last night that the htc thunderbolt bootloader was cracked after 2 or 4 days of its released.
i will support all the effort the dev and you ppl put into this but so disappointed wwith the way sony works, much like apple in my point of view.Is not bad coz they protect their products or intelectual whatever its call, but isn't the whole point of android os to be completly custumisible? if sony doesnt want us to do that or if in the near future the bootloadre is cracked, would they sue the dev?
why they don't create their own iphone then?
so disapointed, after using sony cellphones the last 6 yrs, this is the last for a while i think for me.but im so grateful for all the work and support of the dev and members.peace.
Im kinda on the fence with this post....but i have to lean towards the next "bootloader" post should only come when/if its cracked.

There's never been a phone with such a secure protection, and if this phone has an exploit then chances are new model's won't. This news though not complete is the closest the Dev's have come to finding a workable exploit. And what Bin4ry has done is show that we can have custom kernel's, this is a win in my eyes

It is NOT hacking the bootloader it is just ignoring it... Like doing a side loading of the Kernel. Unfortunately if you reboot your phone the phone will boot as normal with Original SE files....
Never the less it is great news, if he can get a script to start the kexec tool in every reboot the bootloader will be totally ignored and we can load the custom kernels.

Flashing back will not help?
I can't really be bothered waiting for another 2.1 update no matter how big or small. It's still 2.1. I couldn't be more happy to see the XDA devs hard at work making 2.2+ for the x8. It's not SE who make the x8 a decent little mid-range phone.

Two things can happen:
*New Android update which disables this.
*New EROM which disables bypassing and DRM killing on lower level:
a) new EROM, same AID - EROM is downgradable
b) new EROM, new AID - can't be downgraded at the moment
Basically, don't risk - don't update if any new update comes.

Yeah, CM is the base for most custom ROMs nowadays for many devices
and has really taken Android to a new level!
It doesn't surprise me that Samsung embraced the CM community.
Not underestimating anyone's work, and I am not even speaking specifically for X10 community,
but it's one thing to tweak an already fully functional ROM to improve it
and another thing to use AOSP sources and compile a whole new firmware, like Cyanogen does.

It really depends on North American availability, which has been a consistent problem for Sony. (They know this and are working on it.)
I have a great dislike for grey market imports... If I can't get it in my country with manufacturer warranty for hardware defects, I'm far less likely to purchase it.
Unfortunately, the pattern has been that in the USA, you only have three choices:
1) Carrier-mangled version with locked bootloader that cannot be unlocked
2) Previous-generation device (unlockable TL units are just becoming available now...)
3) Grey market import
If Sony sorts out their North American supply chain and the Z is available in this country in a timely fashion without going through AT&T - I will definitely be getting it. If it's the same story as the TL was... Maybe, not sure.

Yeah. I hope Sony manages to find some way to get AT&T to allow unlock this time around.
Also I must admit - if AT&T gets the non-waterproof ZL I REALLY hope that the waterproof Z is sold in this country directly.
