Multiple Contact issue while sycing - Galaxy S II General

Hello,
I'm having duplicate contacts on my phone. Can anyone help?
I'm getting 2 contacts for everything. Looks like the phone is creating multiple contacts, Is it possible to avoid this (rather than stop syncing with fb and gtalk)
thanks

Maybe it's showing your google contacts and your phone contacts, or your phone and sim contacts, have a look in your settings in the contacts screen, and make sure you only have one of the settings ticked.
Also if you are importing to gmail account, you can use gmail to remove duplicate contacts.

It all depends where the contacts come from.
If you go into the gmail web version on a computer and look up the contacts and there are duplicates - then delete the duplicates and sync.
If the duplicate contacts are stored on the SIM - then either delete them or choose the option not to view them.
If the duplicate contacts are stored on the phone (but do not sync with gmail) - I would just delete them (you could always back them up with KIES on the computer).
If the duplicate contacts come from different applications (gmail, facebook, etc) then you just 'link' them. This way gmail will sync only with the gamil contacts and Facebook will only sync with the facebook contacts but most importantly you only see a single contact with all the info from both souces in it.

Related question.
Is there any way to backup and restore linked contacts when you do a full wipe and restore? Titanium Backup doesn't seem to like doing this, and linking them again really annoys me.
Any ideas?

ActiveSync and Google messed up my contacts

I have set ActiveSync (Exchange) to sync with my GMail account, and I'm positive I've ticked only the mail checkbox. Today, all out of sudden, it synced contacts too, so now I have a bunch of unwanted contacts, both on my GMail account, and on my phone, not to mention that contact pictures are messed too.
On Manila ActiveSync settings page, contacts checkbox is off but disabled (greyed out). On WM ActiveSync settings, contacts under Exchange are turned on.
This is not the first time it has happened to me. First time I thought it was my fault, but now I'm sure it's not. Has anyone had a similar problem, and knows the solution? The bug is really annoying.
Well, I didn' have the exact situtaion but something similar.... I use MS Myphone and ActiveSync to synch my Google contacts. Somehow, i ended up with duplicate contacts and some cases 3-4 copies. Here's what I did to resolve it:
*On the HD2, Delete the Activesync(exchange) account.
*On the HD2, Delete Myphone acct
*On the HD2, Delete the pim.vol file (located in root of the device). You can back this file up just incase.
*On my desktop, Go to my Google contacts online and hit the 'Find duplicate' button, deleted the duplicates
*On my desktop, sign into Myphone online account. Under contacts, hit 'Find Duplicates'. delete the duplicates thereafter.
*On HD2, create and configure Myphone and let it sync the contacts
*On HD2, create and configure ActiveSync exchange server to syn the contacts.
Hope this helps somehow...Good luck!
Thanks for your reply, but it doesn't quite solve the bug, just cleans the mess up. I want to avoid it happening in the first place.
Noone with similar problems?
Just a word of warning - don't sync your calendar with GMail if you've already got a bunch of accepted appointments in your phone.
GMail will send a brand new meeting request to everyone on the original recipients list, even for old appointments!
Happened to me when I backed up my phone, flashed new ROM, restored contacts, appointments, etc and then synced to GMail.
My entire office got spammed with meeting requests for old things like the 2009 company Christmas party!
Oh, and I also had the issue where all my contact pictures were very low quality.
See my post here:

I'm not sure if your problem is same as mine. Did you personally checked to sync calendar items and contacts? I select mail only, but calendar and contacts get auto-check without my permission...

Sync contacts with gmail account

Does any one have problem with sync contacts with gmail account?
I have contacts in my phone. How to synchronize them with gmail?
Mail is synchronizing ok, but contacts...
When i tryed new rom-s i must sync with my PC all time, but i want to back them in my phone from gmail. I's it possible?
TY
You first need to enable the contacts sync. -≥ Go to Settings - Data Synchronization - Google and put a checkmark on Contacts.
On your phone, if you go to contacts, you see on the right side of the contact's name the word phone(this means the contact is a phone contact) You have three types of contacts - phone, google and sim contacts. All of your contacts need to be google contacts, if you want to sync them with google. You can probably manually convert every single phone contact to google contact, but that would take a lot of time.
So to speed up things, you need to do this:
You need to transfer all your contacts to your computer, Outlook or such. Then delete all your contacts from the phone. From outlook you need to export all contacts to the .csv or .vcard file. Then go to Gmail and import all your contacts from .csv file. Connect your tattoo to the internet and again go to settings - data synchronization - Google, press menu and choose Sync now. It will then transfer all your contacts from gmail to your phone. Then all your contacts will become google contacts and you will be able to sync them with Gmail.
In the future, when you create a new contact on your phone, be sure to select google as type of the contact to be able to sync it with gmail.
But be very careful with this, make a backup of all your contacts before you do this.
Bye
My contact have letters: š, ć,.. and few more letters that show ? ? instead of š, ć when i'm export contacts from outlook.. I's there any other way to convert phone to google contacts? TY
I did a bit of research on this and there seems to be no other way to convert contacts from phone to google...i found this answer from htc on one of the forums:
HTC >>There is no default setting to always store a contact as google.
If you wish create a contact save it as google and create another one, if its set to google already then it does remember if not then you'll have to do this manually.
Unfortunately it is not possible to convert all contacts to google ones, it can only be done by re-adding each individual contact.

In phone or SIM?
Just make sure you enable the sync in Settings as noted above and enable background data; every contact should be then synced between server and phone (but I'm not sure about SIM contacts, probably not) when you go online with your phone.
Many of my contacts even have Serbian Cyrillic letters (абвгдђежзијклљ...) and everything works just fine, no matter if they were created in Google Contacts online (www.google.com/contacts) or in my phone.
However, I haven't try sync between phone and Outlook because I use Ubuntu and Google Contacts only
Dejan i have tried this...i created a phone contact and tried to sync it with google and it doesn't work for me....the contact needs to be a google contact. But for the ščćžđ letters, yes gmail supports them in contact names, sorry for misleading you.
I solve problem.
With program expcontacts export all people to sdcard in csv format.
Delete all contacts from phone.
Import csv file from sdcard to gmail contacts.
Sync contacts with gmail.
Great workaround Liderzre, skipping the whole outlook thing, for the people who don't use windows and outlook or for the people who don't want outlook to mess up letters čćžšđ in their contact names
Thanks for the great app. All in order now, but not syncing...oh well on to remedy another problem.

Contacts do not apear in gmail

Hello,
I understand that Google Sync is supposed to keep my contacts safe so I never loose them.
I initially started of with a nokia 5230, I used Ovi Suite to import all my contacts in Outlook, then I got them to my HTC Hero with HTC Sync. All great.
I also notice I have contacts that where in my gmail account, and I've even linked them with my phone and facebook contacts.
However, if I now login to my Gmail account, I only see the gmail contacts in there, no phone contacts.
I had the same problem. In your 'People' application (Contacts) on the phone, if you hit menu and then export the contacts to your SD card, you can then import them back to your Google contacts area on the phone. This is the only contacts/People area that will synchronise with Google.
After doing that, just go into View under the contacts menu and choose to view only Google contacts. The phone contacts list will still be there just not viewable as you will be loking at Google contacts instead.
I have done this and avoid sync with Outlook as I was getting too many duplicates - all synchronisation now is direct between the phone and Google. I do however use Coogle Calendar Sync between Google and Outlook and it seems to work OK.
Hope this helps.
Thanks, I'll try that.

Need help on Contacts and Call Log

Hello,
I am a new user of Galaxy S4 with Android 4.4.2 (first time Android user) and I have issues with the contacts how it is at present and wanted your help to get those resolved.
Note:
I have Gmail, Yahoo Mail, Skype, Exchange account, WhatsApp are synced in the device, but I have disabled Contact Sync for all of these. So now if I go to Contacts screen I can see only Device Contacts which is GOOD .
Issue 1: Search
When I search for contact in the contacts screen the search result includes contacts from Gmail, WhatsApp etc as well along with the device contacts. How can we get rid of these?
From where contact search pull these Gmail contacts even if those are not available inside contacts screen? Same happen when I search for contacts from Compose message screen.
Issue 2: Call Log
The Call Log by default include all Call Log and Message Log. We do have a View Filter where we can set ALL Calls Only and this is a temporary fix for the view to show only Call Log. Next time I open Log I see both of them. Is there a way I can fix this?
Thanks.
It's coz you must have previously synced your contatcs with Gmail / fb. Try deleting them all and adding them again from the backup. Also check the truecaller settings if any.

Thanks river-mystique, Yes when I setup the device with the Gmail ID it did auto synced contacts and later I disabled the Sync. So how can I remove all contacts and restore from backup? Or I need to factory Reset and Sync with Samsung Account? Also no True Caller.
Another question: If I factory reset and Sync with Samsung account (Where I have my contacts and SMS synced) and setup Gmail Again, will the device try to sync Gmail Contact again, as during device setup with Gmail there is no Option to disable Sync types. I think it is only available after the device is configured.
Thanks.

Contacts Confusion

Another newb question to the Samsung. My contacts are an absolute nightmare and I can't figure out how to get them under control. I went in and disabled (I think) sync on as many things as I could find (exchange, facebook, etc). I also went through and manually deleted a bunch of contacts I didn't want. Went in there today and BOOM. Contacts are a chaotic mess again. How do I fix this? How can I mass delete contacts and start over if it comes down to that?
#frustrated ex-apple person here.
Facebook always screws mine up, so I never sync it ever.
I'd just sync your google ones and then go fix them on contacts.google.com

You need to disable sync on all the apps. Contact can be sync from Gmail, Facebood, Google+ etc.. Make sure you go into each and stop all the sync, then delete all the existing contacts (most of them just have email address with no phone number associate), then restore your original contact list. If you don't have the original contact list then you need to modify your current one to your liking, then export it out to your sdcard. This will be your core original list. In the future if anything happened to your contact list, you can easily delete all then import your original list and you're back. The quickest way, is to select display only "phone" contact then other none phone number contacts will disappear when you open contact.
You can tell the phone which contacts to display by account. I have mine set to only display Google. This way I don't have to worry about what syncs and doesn't, and can link the contacts between accounts so it'll show their Facebook picture for them.
