This has made me with a goddarn shatty contact list!! Even worse, I cannot sync more than a few contacts since about 95% of em got "phone" and I cannot edit them from google/contacts..
Hope you lads get my point..

I had exactly same problem with my Magic because I imported my contacts from SIM. This is how I did it.
1) Used HTC Sync app to sync contacts to outlook express
2) Export contacts from outlook express as CSV file
3) Imported into google contacts through web interface on PC (http://www.google.com/contacts)
4) Edit as you need and you will have option change group to My Contacts for each contact
This process is little laborious. You also change the view of contacts in contacts application options.

There's ExportContacts in the Market that will export your contacts as a csv file onto you SD card. Then you can import them into google contacts. That's what I did anyway.
OK, so I added a few contacts from my phone, but they don't show up in google contacts... anyone know why? The contacts I add to google contacts show up on my phone just fine, but not the other way around
There is a view option to decide what you can see in the contact view. A filter if you will. What I did was add all my contacts to my google account so that it syncs. Then in my googlemail I deleted all of my duplicates. Once that synced, I exported my google contacts to .vcf then imported to phone contacts. The two are now duplicate. I can filter which one I want to see which is the google contacts and I can now backup my phone contacts to my computer/outlook.
OK, i found the problem... when I created these contacts, it looks like they were created of the type: "phone"... looks like phone contacts don't sync, but "google" contacts do. How do I change from phone to google contacts?

This is what I was getting at above.
Export your phone contacts to file. Which will be a .vcf on your phone. Then import the same .vcf to your google contacts.
When you go to export you will be asked if you want to export your google or phone contacts. Same prompt will present when you import contacts.

wow dude... well its pretty much a no brainer... when you are in the people app which is your contacts list...and you add contact (should be all the way at the top)
the very first thing you do is add a name and then the VERY SECOND line clearly sais "contact type" just make sure that sais google and NOT phone.
and i dont think you can change them in the phone once you add them in. so just make sure to do it right the first time, or delete the contact and re enter it. or do it the way it was stated earlier.
How in the hell do I get my phone contacts to sync to Google? I tried settings_accounts_Google sync but it only pulls my gmail contacts to my phone. I want to put my phone contacts to gmail. Backup assistant works fine, but some of the custom roms out don't use it. I can't find any info on this. HTC told me when I create contacts and choose Google instead of phone that they will sync. What about the 80 or so that backup assistant did upon activating my phone? And also, if I save future contacts as Google contacts and not phone contacts, does backup assist still back these up too?
In phone book hit menu and export contacts to sd card. This will give you a file that can be used to import your contacts on gmail.com
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
or just go to backup asst online.. vzw.com/backupassistant, and then export your contacts to a .csv file..which you can then import into google..doesnt take long.
In order to get the ones already saved in your phone to sync to google I think you're going to have to go with one of the options they said since I dont think there is a way to change them from phone contact to google contact.
However, when you add new contacts there is a drop down toward the top that you can change from phone to google so that after you save them it will sync automatically.
So if I import them to Google, it will sync. I get that. Now if I add new contacts as Google contacts does backup assist still back them up also?
Hello,
I understand that Google Sync is supposed to keep my contacts safe so I never loose them.
I initially started of with a nokia 5230, I used Ovi Suite to import all my contacts in Outlook, then I got them to my HTC Hero with HTC Sync. All great.
I also notice I have contacts that where in my gmail account, and I've even linked them with my phone and facebook contacts.
However, if I now login to my Gmail account, I only see the gmail contacts in there, no phone contacts.
I had the same problem. In your 'People' application (Contacts) on the phone, if you hit menu and then export the contacts to your SD card, you can then import them back to your Google contacts area on the phone. This is the only contacts/People area that will synchronise with Google.
After doing that, just go into View under the contacts menu and choose to view only Google contacts. The phone contacts list will still be there just not viewable as you will be loking at Google contacts instead.
I have done this and avoid sync with Outlook as I was getting too many duplicates - all synchronisation now is direct between the phone and Google. I do however use Coogle Calendar Sync between Google and Outlook and it seems to work OK.
Hope this helps.
Thanks, I'll try that.
Hello,
I would like to upload ( & eventually sync. ) the contacts to GMail contacts.
I´m afraid to add GMail to automatic synchro, cause as far as I understand, it will double my contacts ?!
What do you think ?
Cheers
Ok after uploading do this:
Go to gmail and view your contacts. pres the "more actions" button above your contacts and choose "find & merge duplicates" this will merge the duplicates. i think this is what you mean.
Well, not completely. ( but your tip is interesting )
Main question is, how to upload to GMail ?
Where are they now? on the phone? on the SIM card? exported on a CSV file?

Thanks for your response. I have the similar question. So can you please explain it clearly to us:
* the contact sync will simply add the contact of my phone to Gmail contact list? or the 2 contact lists will emerge, then we can get a complete contact list on the phone and gmail?
* if I have the duplicated contacts on my phone, how to merge them?
Thanks.

Kind of have the same question. My contacts are now on the phone and the SIM card. After using "sync now" in the settings, I got my gmail contacts onto my phone, but not the phone contacts into gmail.
Is there some trick to do this?
I finally updated GMail using a .csv backup made by "Backup Contacts" found on market.
But I still wonder how to also synch. them ?
Hi,
What I did in your case, was:
First to backup all my phone contacts to outlook in my computer.
There I exported the contacts to a .csv file (like ChefChaudart said). With that file I imported the contacts to my gmail account. Meaning I have all my contacts (the ones I had in the phone and the ones I already had in gmail) all together in the email account.
Last I deleted the contacts in my phone, and syncronised with my gmail account. Now having all the contacts both in the phone and in gmail account.
It's not a fast way to do it, but I didn't found another way.
Cheers
You mean that if you do not delete the contacts on your phone at last step, everything will be duplicated ?
Yes - Once you have all your contacts on Gmail you don't need them on your phone.. it will sync to your phone from Gmail..
in the phone go to accounts and sync tick background data, and auto sync... job done.
Hi,
Yes, is as im_iceman says.
And maybe some of your contacts could merge. Meaning that if you had two contacts with the same name, one in the phone and the other in the email account, they could merge under the same name.
As im_iceman says, one you have them in your gmail account you don't need them on the phone, just sync and you'll have them all back in the phone, well organized, not duplicated nor merged.
Cheers
Bad, I would like to synchronize between all !
That means ;
Thunderbird <==> Phone Contact List <==> Google Contacts
But if I understand you clearly ;
Thunderbird <==> Phone Contact List 1
-----------------------Phone Contact List 2 <==> Google Contacts
Correct ?

What I would do, and I actually did:
All contacts in Phone list ====> to Outlook (in your case Thunderbird) =====> now to gmail account *====> and now synchronize from gmail to the phone.
* When I had all contacts gathered in one place (gmail account) I deleted them from the phone.

Once you make sure you have all of your contacts in gmail, I would recomend you to delete them from the phone so after you synchronize with gmail you won't get your contacts duplicated, meaning that in your phone you would have every contact two times.
For obvious reasons, just in case both my phone AND gmail account fail at the same time or any other problem, I keep a backup of all my contacts in outlook.
Cheers

Thanks... Will wait...!!!
Actually I wasn't quite right... you can sync contacts.. you just can't sync their birthday info and such like..
I'm not familiar with Thunderbird but.. can't you use Google as your primary source.. which syncs to your phone.. and the sync Thunderbird with either the live google account, or with the phone? Then you'll have everything you need..
