This is just a post to let everyone know how I fixed my lagging atrix in hopes that it could help you too.
It started will slow scrolling through my contacts. Then any app that uses my contacts slowed down - call log, text messages, caller id - all slowed and sometimes forced closed. Then it spread to home screen swiping, app list scrolling, fingerprint scanner lag, even games stuttered.
I found that my "Contacts Storage" size grew to 168MB - for only 100 contacts.
I had a backup, so I shut off the automatic syncing, wiped out my contacts, and cleared the "Contacts Storage" data. Rebooted and reloaded my contacts. Now it's down to 630KB - much better.
Now it is running like it was brand new. After some research, I found that other phones are having this problem too. I think that my phone lagged everywhere because the phone was having such a hard time processing the huge file.
So, if your phone is lagging and you're running out of ideas, remember to check your contacts file size.
For me wiping the Dalvic Cache made my phone feel brand new and more than doubled my available memory...

The only thing that I can think of is that after each "contacts" force close, the phone would have to reprocess that huge 168MB file and it was just overwhelmed. My phone seemed like it was stuck in a continuous "force close - reload HUGE file" cycle. All of the processing going on in the background was tying up the processor when it should have been available for the fp scanner, app tray, etc.

Something is eating my internal memory. I'm aware of the BT issue, but I don't use BT... it has to be something else. Any pointers on how to track this down?
What do you mean by "eating"?
Apps and app data use internal memory.

Yeah. but not at 5mb/day when I don't install anything.
I have also seen this. For example. I was up to 115 meg now I am at 100 meg with the same apps installed. I do use BT but I also know when I need to flush out the core files so that is not the issue. What I have noticed is when I use the browser or set up my email account is when I see the drop. I have gone to apps and deleted cache but have also learned when I do that on Mail, Browser and contacts I lose all my contacts, mail settings and bookmarks. I cannot believe those would eat up 10 meg of space. If I keep using these programs will my internal memory keep getting lower and lower. I also just started using peep yesterday, and that is when it dropped from about 105 to 100.
You can empty the browser cache by going into Settings in the Browser and hitting "Clear cache."
Go into Applications in the Settings menu. Go to all the apps you use, and hit "Clear data" Problem solved.
someone should make a app that does this automaticly if there isnt one yet.
I had this same problem. I went back to Best Buy and got a new replacement. The new phone even had the EVDO Rev A, instead of the Rev 0, and the new one has "with Google" on the back.
I have read that there were a large bad batch of these phones, and that there were issues with them.
I also read that there are also other issues involving SMS/Text and Bluetooth that may or not be related to this.
If you can, go to where you bought it and get a replacement, if at all possible.
Just my thoughts!
The phone I have does have Rev 1 and with google on the back so I don't think that is my issue. I also have no dust problem. I just see the memory drop daily and unless I go and clear cache daily it won't come back. This should not be nec IMO. There is not much left on the phone with nothing installed and seems to me using APP2SD we should not ever fall below 115-110. My wifes Moment has the same apps and she has about 220 left on hers
Hi guys,
I do have a lot of contacts on my phone and this has perhaps caused a problem.
I'm currently on the Froyo stock ROM - and i noticed earlier that my contacts list amounts to about 20MB of space.
That's quite a lot since moving apps to sdcard is still limited in froyo stock.
Went to settings -> applications -> manage apps -> ALL -> Contacts storage
This file is 20MB big!
I've cleared data and copied a vcf backup and it's now 4MB.
Everytime my phone sync contacts with google or fb, the filesize blooms again.
Technically, i could disable sync contacts for gmail/fb/twitter, but i foresee this not as a long term solution.
Any ideas to keep this file size small and snappy?
or a contact application optimizer app?
Sounds to me, as if the profile-pictures are your problem. You could try to disable FB-Contact-sync and see, if the size still increases. If this is really the problem, then, technically speaking, your solution would be to downsize those profile pictures. Problem with this is, you would have to check after every fb-sync, if there were changes. I don't know of any app that handles this automaticaly fo you, but maybe there is a dev who has some spare time and like the idea?

Thanks for the feedback. I've already disabled sync with FB/gmail for contacts.
Hope someone might be keen to develop something for this. It's pretty annoying to have your contacts taking up space instead of having angry birds on your phone. LOL.
You really have a lot of contacts!! I have around 800 contacts and current storage is 8.59 mb.
So, 20 mb means you should have around 35.000 contacts. Is that right more or less? It is just to check. For example, if you have 300 contacts, then it is very strange that your Legend requires 20 mb and then, maybe, there is something wrong there.
I have a very rich info in my contacts, (phone, address, email, notes,...). Maybe you have a lot of pictures? I suppose they require a lot of storage.
technically, i have 300 friends with numbers, the others are from previous gmail syncs and totals at 1,200.
But it still doesn't make sense why it's bloated to a 20MB size.
It's frustrating. At the moment, i've disabled sync and it's been locked to 4.25MB.
Thing is, google sync/fb sync is not helping do much in terms of new contacts.
But where did the additional 16MB come from?
FB pics can't be that big right?
It's annoying because that's 16MB of space that could be used for other things.
i mean 16MB is really A LOT OF APPS. Or one big-sized fruit ninja or angry birds.
9 out of 10 times, nothing loads in the gallery. Sometimes the folder shows up but no pictures, and sometimes just the yellow/black background. I can reboot my phone but the problem will persist again after leaving it on for awhile.
Anyone else having this problem?
I am with Virtuous 9.0 and 9.5 which uses the HTC Gallery. Only folder it displays is the camera shots folders. There are a couple of other folders on my phone that won't shot up (like my DroCap folder).
the 3d gallery is total garbage.
Believe it or not, the stock gallery that came with the espresso sense on the Mytouch slide was better than the 3d gallery. At least all the pictures showed up and it wasn't dog crap slow.
Do you guys have tons of pictures on your phones?
I may have 100 seperated into folders on my sd card. Just wondering if the amount of pics may be the problem.
Have over 300 pictures in my gallery and MOST of the time it works just fine. Sometimes it will open up and not display anything. A force close and a cache clear typically fixes that though.
I've also noticed mine sometimes does not load any pictures and I have to close it and try again. It's been working pretty good the past few days though.
Any chance at getting the old-school gallery version on these G2s? I tried QuickPic and really liked it, but the only downfall is that it took a while to generate thumbnail images when you launched it. Worse of all, it seemed to do that every time I started that application, but it is better than the 3-D gallery.
http://www.appbrain.com/app/quickpic/com.alensw.PicFolder
Here is a thread for the old 2d gallery.
I tried it but I was too lazy to let it make thumbnails of all my pictures and I nandroided back. I may try it again if there are good results.

You could try clearing cache for the gallery. Settings - manage applications - all - gallery then clear cache.

I don't think it has something to do with the quantity. The 1st time it occured to me it was 10 days after I got my phone and I had something like 50 pics in it.
From what I've read since this is a well-known bug.
Hello,
Ars Technica seems to have written a rather harsh review of the note 3. They are mostly critical of the software. Has anyone with the phone actually experienced this freezing in the gallery app? I am surprised it has not been more widely discussed.
http://bcove.me/e41lnia4
Full Review: http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2013...-big-and-it-pulls-some-benchmark-shenanigans/
I suspect the reviewer is jumping the gun a little here. Looking at his video demonstration, I notice there was Dropbox folders. In my experience with the Note 2, anytime i loaded the gallery for the 1st time (or 2nd or 3rd or 4th and so on if I got impatient and exited) when it had cloud accounts to sync with like Dropbox or Facebook, it took a VERY long time to populate all of the thumbnails. Especially if like me, there were thousands of images in Dropbox. The trick is to just leave it to do its thing the 1st time, go have a coffee, then afterwards opening gallery will be almost instant.
My gallery opens up instantly, I think he has some sofware or app conflict
thanks guys. I expected more of ars technica.
He also complained about poor battery life, which is completely contrary to most everything I've read elsewhere. So hmm, performance issues + battery issues? Sounds like a bad app.

I can only speak from my experience but I have had the gallery lag everytime I open a folder. I have also have pretty poor battery life.
Just to add some piece of mind, I can confirm that I have now checked the gallery since getting my Note 3 delivered today and it's as fast and smooth as could be expected. I've made a short video showing how responsive it is so you can decide for yourself but seeing as I'm new to posting, the forum won't let me show the link. I'll edit this post to include it once my post count is high enough.
Thanks guys. I guess I already pre-ordered the device anyway. Maybe the bad app is carrier specific (some sort of conflicting bloatware)? Do you guys mind adding your providers to the posts?

My stock Gallery opens fast, but its so laggy i can't use it. If you have many photos and/or use Dropbox/Facebook sync photos it's going to be a PITA to use. I tried downloading Gallery ICS from the play store and it works as it should, blazing fast.
Probably a easy fix for Samsung, i imagine.
My experience it's with 400 photos. I can only imagine how it would be with more.

Hang - no.
But the Gallery is not really smooth when you had a lot of photos.
Samsung will not be able to fix this, they don't have the work force.
The gallery app (SGallery.apk) is 50MB. Fifty megabytes! QuickPic as a comparison is 0.39MB. Okay, it doesn't have cloud sync, so here is Flipboard: 4.7MB
All of the Samsung apps are this crazy large, which is the sign of total lack of optimization. They throw something together in some very high level scripting language, and the first time it appears to run they ship it.
Samsung phones have great hardware (yes, i think plastic is the ideal material to make phone from), great specs, good expandability. Samsung's marketing division is top notch. What the company lacks are designers and software developers.
Until they pull themselves together in these areas, our only bet is to root, delete the Samsung garbage (gain a lot of space!) and buy / install replacement apps.

I've been conducting a little bit of research about this issue. I moved my class 4 32GB sd card from my Note 2 to the Note 3 with no problem whatsoever. over 3500 photos and videos (that apparently totaled to 16GB), various TiBu files & old Custom ROM zip files, downloads, mp3's, PDF's, etc. the first week that I had my phone, there wasn't any kind of difficulty whatsoever. then in that second week, i noticed that i had a broken photo, kind of like the same glitch with the Note 2 when empty/corrupted files would show up in the gallery alongside your actual photos. it was only then that the gallery would freeze on me. not any of the other folders on there, just the folder with the photos that i captured. i tried to find that file and delete it, but it inadvertently corrupted other files in that folder too. the gallery would force close, and my battery life was horrible as a result of it. i tried to use QuickPic as an alternate gallery browser to find the files, but it froze that app too. i also changed up the settings on S Finder, deleted some other files i had on the memory card, but still a no go. (there was a link over on Android Central that suggested alot of the other things I've done too, http://forums.androidcentral.com/sa...-stopped-screen-freezing-every-2-minutes.html). i figured that the first thing i would need to do would be to replace the memory card altogether. moving the files to my PC i found the corrupted files and videos, left them on the old memory card, deleted them, reformatted it, but still threw just about everything else on a new class 10 64GB card and put that in the phone. so far the gallery is performing as normal, though instead of 3500 pics/videos, i left about 1200 of them on my PC to just free up some space. i'll let you all know if it persists as well.

I have installed a custom ROM.. and since then i didn't find this issue issue anymore.. it could be ROM specific too.
My Gallery continues, after the most recent firmware update, very very laggy. But i can browser the photos with the Samsung Link app, which is very very responsive and fast.
Those of you with lagging/freezing issues, does the gallery work smoothly if you disable Wi-Fi? If so...
Solution:
On a rooted device:
Navigate to system/app
Rename AllShareMediaServer.apk, AllShareMediaShare.apk, and the identical named .odex files to .bak extensions
or
Install Titanium Backup Root and freeze:
Nearby devices 2.0.0 (or later)
Nearby Service 1.4r476 (or later)
Once done with either of the above methods, the gallery app will not freeze while WiFi is enabled simultaneously.

BTW, if you're not rooted, I think going through App Manager and disabling those two apps may have the same end result.
This worked for me, gallery is now butter smooth. Hopefully it will help others.

Oh yeh, nice tip justsayinbro.
Unfortunately i can't disable those apps, i don't have root access, i can only force closed them in the App Manager.
When Wifi is OFF the Gallery is completely smooth and fast. When i turned it on, can't use it.

You're welcome @tWoBrO. Disabling Wi-FI is definitely useful as a temporary work-around for non-rooted users. :good:
For whatever reason, AllShare Media apps aren't playing nice with Wi-Fi right now (in our case, maybe others). With Wi-Fi enabled, the gallery app seems to trigger the AllShare services to scan for media that users may want to share with capable devices. Either it's working damn hard in the background to have such a taxing impact on the gallery, or there's a bug or two that needs to be squished.
To my understanding, AllShare is actually a nice feature to take advantage of. I just hope its issues on the Note 3 get resolved.
So i am experiencing some issues with my note 3 wondering if anyone else has a well. .

The device cache's thumbnail pictures of EVERYTHING. This is stored in a hidden folder under \DCIM. This consumes huge amounts of space (Gbytes). It also takes forever to scan a large extSDcard (eg: 64 GB).
There is a simple solution: Tell Android to only scan for media in user-defined media folders. This should be:
\DCIM
\Pictures
\Music
\Video
\Documents
and whatever else you desire.
How to do it? Easy, there is a free APP for that ...

I use it and it is great. It essentially places a "flagging" file ".NOMEDIA" in folders that you don't want scanned and thumbnail cached. I have such flagging files in every folder in my extSDcard, except for a few which have some pictures and music.

I have the same behavior. The heating is not always present on my Note-3. It seems to only occur when I am installing APPS. I suspect this is where our 32 GB storage rom is located (beside the camera), and the write-cycle is demanding higher current loads.

I cannot determine when it happens. I have been trying to replicate the issue numerous times and almost pinned it to the LED notification light until I turned it off and still got a hot phone. It happens more often over night when I am asleep and in the morning I wake up to a hot dead phone or near hot dead phone. I should note that I have everything off overnight so there is no receiving/sending data.

Headphone set
Hi,
I just received my N3 and I am checking all what I had read about issues. Fortunately up to now I did not find any major one except the headphone set. In fact the sound on the right Chanel is too low. I tried to adjust it with utility Adapt Sound but couldn't get satisfaction. I compared the set with my old one so I noticed that it is default in the N3 one.
Had anyone experienced such issue? And do you think Sam will replace the headphone set alone. I don't want to send the whole stuff and potentially get issues with its replacement.
NothingThing major from mine so far so good got it syncd with the gear I work walking around all day and she's holding up nicely. I do that and I change the songs from the gear as well as take pictures. Today I watched the Dodgers on the watch tbs app too =) this thing is Crazy good to me maybe I got lucky

Overnight - well that sounds wrong and bad.
As a last resort: You mentioned that you turn off everything during night. I presume you mean radios (Wifi, Bluetooth, NFC) are all off. There is one other activity that phones do on their own. Email and Cloud services poll intermittently. The polling would use Wifi first, then use 3G as an alternative. What if you tried turning off 3G (Sync in the Notification Panel) during night. However, a misbehaved program might still attempt dispite the disconnect.
I adjust the "settings" in most my Apps so they don't poll continuously or too frequently. This includes Apps that connect to the internet or cloud: Twitter, Facebook, My Fitness, Box, Dropbox, etc.
Another diagnostic you can do: with a fully charged phone, leave it unplugged overnight. In the morning immediately check if it is hot, as not noted. If so, then immediately check the Settings^General^Battery log. This will show which apps and services were hogging the battery.

It works on my Note-2 (Android 4.1) and Note-3 (Android 4.3).
Regardless, there is an easy manual way to stop Android from scanning all folders for media files. This will speed Android and reduce the cache folder (\DCIM\.thumbnail\).
Create a text file. The contents of the text file is irrelevant; so make it with just a "space" character, for example. Name this text file ".NOMEDIA"; there is to be no extension on the file. Place this file in each primary folder that you want Android to no include in its media scanning and thumbnailing. Don't forget to do the same in the folders on the extSDcard. This marker file does not need to also be in sub-folders of the primary folders you are marking; all sub-folders of the primary so marked will be excluded also.
Or just use Quickpic. It's faster, free and you can select which folders it should and/or shouldn't scan.
When your camera doesn't focus, are you close to the subject by any chance? It has a miminum distance requirement.
I don't use Nova, I use Apex. but it has never crashed. (Unless I clear the RAM in taskmanager.)
