9 out of 10 times, nothing loads in the gallery. Sometimes the folder shows up but no pictures, and sometimes just the yellow/black background. I can reboot my phone but the problem will persist again after leaving it on for awhile.
Anyone else having this problem?
I am with Virtuous 9.0 and 9.5 which uses the HTC Gallery. Only folder it displays is the camera shots folders. There are a couple of other folders on my phone that won't shot up (like my DroCap folder).
the 3d gallery is total garbage.
Believe it or not, the stock gallery that came with the espresso sense on the Mytouch slide was better than the 3d gallery. At least all the pictures showed up and it wasn't dog crap slow.
Do you guys have tons of pictures on your phones?
I may have 100 seperated into folders on my sd card. Just wondering if the amount of pics may be the problem.
Have over 300 pictures in my gallery and MOST of the time it works just fine. Sometimes it will open up and not display anything. A force close and a cache clear typically fixes that though.
I've also noticed mine sometimes does not load any pictures and I have to close it and try again. It's been working pretty good the past few days though.
Any chance at getting the old-school gallery version on these G2s? I tried QuickPic and really liked it, but the only downfall is that it took a while to generate thumbnail images when you launched it. Worse of all, it seemed to do that every time I started that application, but it is better than the 3-D gallery.
http://www.appbrain.com/app/quickpic/com.alensw.PicFolder
Here is a thread for the old 2d gallery.
I tried it but I was too lazy to let it make thumbnails of all my pictures and I nandroided back. I may try it again if there are good results.

You could try clearing cache for the gallery. Settings - manage applications - all - gallery then clear cache.

When it happens, use Rescan Media. It will scan your phone and show up all of your pictures and videos.

I don't think it has something to do with the quantity. The 1st time it occured to me it was 10 days after I got my phone and I had something like 50 pics in it.
From what I've read since this is a well-known bug.

... problem exactly as stated above. Sometimes I will take a picture with the camera and it doesn't show up in the photo gallery until I restart the phone.
Anyone else have a problem with this? Has anyone figured out a way to fix it without restarting?
Yeah I'm having these issue as well and also happens with picture downloads. they wont show in the gallery until after a few reboots at times as well. or sure what's going on with that.
a quick fix, so you dont have to reboot your phone is to kill gallery with a task manager, and open it up again.
ok guys i'm had that same issue now my gallery is gone altogether....my gallery will load but it says loading images...then it says there is no content to be read...i down load an app from the market and it not seeing my sd card either...but if i go in file explore i can see everything on my card....i done a hard reset like three time no luck please help....htc said may have to send the phone back...i think its to small of an issue to lose my phone for a week or more...it maybe a simple fix so i will try this first before...ty for any help someone can offer
oh yeah if i take a new pic it will show up in the gallery but when i reboot its gone....
ok guys i fixed....what i did was took everything off my sd card....re formated...turn the phone off for like 5 min....then back on....put every thing back on the card check the music player and gallery to see if they worked and everything was there....then i rebooted to see if everything would disappear so far i'm good to go i have all my pics and files back....only thing on the first gallery load up be patient it take a min to load the sd card it will flash loading...but after that im good to go...i'm by a new sd card i think that may have been the issue....
It happens to me too. I unmount and remount the sdcard, and the Gallery finds everything.
I find if i go into the camera app, the latest photo is there in the preview box. if i open it, and then go back to the gallery app, it (usually) appears. but yes, annoying bug really.

oddly, i never had this problem until just a second ago, but what this guy said is exactly how i got around it too. i took a photo, task killed camera, went to gallery, no photo, reopened camera, photo was in preview, clicked on it, went to gallery from there, and there it was, ready to share.
it's gotta be a bug of some kind. perhaps the most recent photo isn't loaded to gallery until another photo is taken, or you click preview box. stupid, but possible.
Problem Solved
Hi friends, I encountered the problem as well today and found the solution: Go to the sdcard and search folders for a file named .nomedia and delete it should solve the problem. No need to format or things like that worked fine for me. seems some kind of bug
.nomedia is a file designed to hide directories from being searched by Android Media Scan (which includes Gallery). There is absolutely no reason to delete it, and it's not a bug.
However, there is a bug in Media Scan, which sometimes causes Gallery to "miss" pictures. Executing Media Rescan (from "Development") solves it, or as stated above, just unmounting and mounting the SD card.
There's no Media Rescan in Development on my gb 2.3.3.
I've experienced something similar. I've been running the various CM7 builds and whenever I'd take a pic and immediately share it on Facebook, the pic will never be seen again.
Since then, I've gotten in the habit of hitting up Sugarsync first to sync the new pics, the send it up to Facebook via the gallery.

stock 2.3.3 and i had the problem today.
force quit gallery and it was back to normal.
why is 2.3.3 so buggy!?
When going into Applications => Gallery => Camera Shots, new pictures I took with the camera do not appear there.
Using Astro, I can see that the new pictures I took all appear in /mnt/sdcard/DCIM/100MEDIA, and this directory also contains the pictures that DO appear in the gallery.
Phone is DZ Froyo 2.2 stock, and this could have started after the OTA upgrade, not really sure though...
I just took another picture now in order to verify the problem, and for some reason it DOES appear in the Gallery, however pictures from the last week do not appear there (they are in the 100MEDIA directory like I mentioned).
Any ideas?
It's a gallery cache issue. The stock gallery app just sucks, a simple reboot fixes it, but I know it's a pain in the
As omarsalmin wrote it is a cache issue. Instead of rebooting, use a app to reload the cache. Eg Rescan w w w.appbrain.com/app/rescan-media/com.addz.mediascanner.
Had the very same issue the other day. It's really strange and affects more than the stock gallery. Both it, the Nexus one and SugarSync had the same problem. So I assume the problem has more to do with Android/HTC than the specific app.
Thanks! I must've missed other posts about this because the same thing happens to me, and I was thinking there was a problem with my microSDHC card. So rooting and installing a new ROM will probably fix this right? Thinking about going to Virtuous.
I had the same problem the other day with my recent pictures and videos. it didn't even show the video folder. I rebooted and it fixed the issue.
Thanks for the advice mullepol, I'm going to install the application you suggested
Thanks guys, the pictures actually came back before I had a chance to check this thread, but they were kind of messed up order-wise. after installing Rescan it seems to be better.
Lately my gallery has been acting crazy. It doesn't display all of my pictures. It takes the latest picture taken with the camera and replaces all of my other pictures with that image. So I have a bunch of copies of that one image. Then when I try to delete one, it FC's.
Any ideas?
I'm running Liberty 1.5 btw...
I've had something like that happen too. When I would view a picture in one folder it would display a different one. To fix it I made more folders and spread out my pics like that. Please note I have A LOT of pictures
This may seem like a stupid solution, but have you tried a reboot? I had the gallery act up on me a few times and a reboot usually did the trick. Sorry I couldn't be more help.
i know with mine the app touchdown stores my corp email .jpg and it causes the gallery to not open. so i have to bros we and del the image files. which this is a pain because every email i get someone has that damn pic stored in there sig so its a constant battle.
Sometimes the database the Gallery uses gets corrupt where it displays wonky pics or doesn't even open. To rebuild the database, go to Settings, Applications, Manage Applications, All tab. Select the Gallery app and then select Clear Data. Repeat for the Media Storage app. Then reboot your phone. It will then scan your phone for pics and video and rebuild the database. It may take a while if you have lots of pics.

So, I recently had some issues with my tab, and decided to back and wipe it, starting over. On issue was with that Gallery app. see, I have a long distance relationship, and decided to take some...personal... pictures to send to my bf. forgot they uploaded to google plus; that's ok though because those photos are set to private by default, and no one saw. thing is, as you may know, all google plus photos sync to the gallery app, and each Plus folder becomes an icon in that app, with the latest photo taken as the thumbnail. I figured oh, no biggie, I'll just delete that personal photo, and make it disappear fromt eh tab as well. Well, the photo itself disappeared, but the thumbnail would not. Even after I took more photos and uploaded them to plus, even from the tabe itself, the personal photo was still the thumbnail, and would not change. this probably has something to do with the fact that I constantly got an error message on the tab saying "process android.com.media has stopped."
Then I did the wipe, and it was fixed. But I now have other issues with the gallery. See, I plugged in my external hard drive to it to use for my TB backup and restore for the wipe. I restored apps individually, since I didn't want to restore everything and take the risk of restoring data that held one of the many other glitches I'd been having. Tab worked great after the wipe, so did Gallery, then I restored, and the tab still worked great. But a few weeks after this whole situation, I happen to turn on the gallery app, which I'd never restored with TB. I am treated to a massive grid of icons, maybe hundreds, of photo albums. see, the hard drive i've had plugged into the tablet's USB port wasn't just for my Tablet; it's a 1 Terabyte drive that I have hundreds of gigabytes worth of backup data on from both my mac and PC partitions on my laptop. there are hundreds of folders ont here that have at least 1 picture type file int hem, and the Gallery app automatically adds every single folder with any kind of pic file on it as an album icon. to make it worse, it will not let you delete these albums from the Gallery viewer, even though the photos aren't there, even when the gallery app says the photos aren't found, even thought the OS is DESIGNED FOR REMOVABLE HARD DRIVES!
That's insane, and an incredibly bad design flaw that i'm appalled Google had not fixed, with all the time they've had testing HC and ICS, and programming the Gallery to view photos and scan Hard drives, you know they saw it. to make matters worse, a few weeks later, I'm also having the "process android.com.media has stopped." message come up again. so, idk what's going to happen with that.
Any ideas for a solution, or at least better photo viewer apps? My phone is a Sense infected HTC device, Sense may not be great but at least it's photo viewer gives you the ability to make it ignore specific folders on the card.
what?
Try clearing your gallery cache and force stopping it i use a 500gb and they should disappear after you unplug the hard drive atleast they do for me glad to hear you got the other problem solved also what custom rom are you using?

If your up for it I would try installing one of the many custom roms sounds like the actual app is messing up perhaps a log cat would help....
If you don't want to here's some alternative photo viewers
1.Quickpic

2.photo gallery (fishbowl)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.littlefatfish.photo&hl=en
No need to install a different rom.
What you need, is to get rid of the thumbnails when you use different apps.
Try this;

One of the things you have to remember, if you have all kinds of foto apps, they will undoubtedly synch them all eventually. And you'll wind up with them again.

Hello,
Ars Technica seems to have written a rather harsh review of the note 3. They are mostly critical of the software. Has anyone with the phone actually experienced this freezing in the gallery app? I am surprised it has not been more widely discussed.
http://bcove.me/e41lnia4
Full Review: http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2013...-big-and-it-pulls-some-benchmark-shenanigans/
I suspect the reviewer is jumping the gun a little here. Looking at his video demonstration, I notice there was Dropbox folders. In my experience with the Note 2, anytime i loaded the gallery for the 1st time (or 2nd or 3rd or 4th and so on if I got impatient and exited) when it had cloud accounts to sync with like Dropbox or Facebook, it took a VERY long time to populate all of the thumbnails. Especially if like me, there were thousands of images in Dropbox. The trick is to just leave it to do its thing the 1st time, go have a coffee, then afterwards opening gallery will be almost instant.
My gallery opens up instantly, I think he has some sofware or app conflict
thanks guys. I expected more of ars technica.
He also complained about poor battery life, which is completely contrary to most everything I've read elsewhere. So hmm, performance issues + battery issues? Sounds like a bad app.

I can only speak from my experience but I have had the gallery lag everytime I open a folder. I have also have pretty poor battery life.
Just to add some piece of mind, I can confirm that I have now checked the gallery since getting my Note 3 delivered today and it's as fast and smooth as could be expected. I've made a short video showing how responsive it is so you can decide for yourself but seeing as I'm new to posting, the forum won't let me show the link. I'll edit this post to include it once my post count is high enough.
Thanks guys. I guess I already pre-ordered the device anyway. Maybe the bad app is carrier specific (some sort of conflicting bloatware)? Do you guys mind adding your providers to the posts?

My stock Gallery opens fast, but its so laggy i can't use it. If you have many photos and/or use Dropbox/Facebook sync photos it's going to be a PITA to use. I tried downloading Gallery ICS from the play store and it works as it should, blazing fast.
Probably a easy fix for Samsung, i imagine.
My experience it's with 400 photos. I can only imagine how it would be with more.

I second that, my battery life has been horrible. It's draining at the rate of 12% in one hour. It's crappy compared to G2 which had awesome battery life. I used G2 for a week. So disappointed

Hang - no.
But the Gallery is not really smooth when you had a lot of photos.
Samsung will not be able to fix this, they don't have the work force.
The gallery app (SGallery.apk) is 50MB. Fifty megabytes! QuickPic as a comparison is 0.39MB. Okay, it doesn't have cloud sync, so here is Flipboard: 4.7MB
All of the Samsung apps are this crazy large, which is the sign of total lack of optimization. They throw something together in some very high level scripting language, and the first time it appears to run they ship it.
Samsung phones have great hardware (yes, i think plastic is the ideal material to make phone from), great specs, good expandability. Samsung's marketing division is top notch. What the company lacks are designers and software developers.
Until they pull themselves together in these areas, our only bet is to root, delete the Samsung garbage (gain a lot of space!) and buy / install replacement apps.

I've been conducting a little bit of research about this issue. I moved my class 4 32GB sd card from my Note 2 to the Note 3 with no problem whatsoever. over 3500 photos and videos (that apparently totaled to 16GB), various TiBu files & old Custom ROM zip files, downloads, mp3's, PDF's, etc. the first week that I had my phone, there wasn't any kind of difficulty whatsoever. then in that second week, i noticed that i had a broken photo, kind of like the same glitch with the Note 2 when empty/corrupted files would show up in the gallery alongside your actual photos. it was only then that the gallery would freeze on me. not any of the other folders on there, just the folder with the photos that i captured. i tried to find that file and delete it, but it inadvertently corrupted other files in that folder too. the gallery would force close, and my battery life was horrible as a result of it. i tried to use QuickPic as an alternate gallery browser to find the files, but it froze that app too. i also changed up the settings on S Finder, deleted some other files i had on the memory card, but still a no go. (there was a link over on Android Central that suggested alot of the other things I've done too, http://forums.androidcentral.com/sa...-stopped-screen-freezing-every-2-minutes.html). i figured that the first thing i would need to do would be to replace the memory card altogether. moving the files to my PC i found the corrupted files and videos, left them on the old memory card, deleted them, reformatted it, but still threw just about everything else on a new class 10 64GB card and put that in the phone. so far the gallery is performing as normal, though instead of 3500 pics/videos, i left about 1200 of them on my PC to just free up some space. i'll let you all know if it persists as well.

I have installed a custom ROM.. and since then i didn't find this issue issue anymore.. it could be ROM specific too.
My Gallery continues, after the most recent firmware update, very very laggy. But i can browser the photos with the Samsung Link app, which is very very responsive and fast.
Those of you with lagging/freezing issues, does the gallery work smoothly if you disable Wi-Fi? If so...
Solution:
On a rooted device:
Navigate to system/app
Rename AllShareMediaServer.apk, AllShareMediaShare.apk, and the identical named .odex files to .bak extensions
or
Install Titanium Backup Root and freeze:
Nearby devices 2.0.0 (or later)
Nearby Service 1.4r476 (or later)
Once done with either of the above methods, the gallery app will not freeze while WiFi is enabled simultaneously.

BTW, if you're not rooted, I think going through App Manager and disabling those two apps may have the same end result.
This worked for me, gallery is now butter smooth. Hopefully it will help others.

Oh yeh, nice tip justsayinbro.
Unfortunately i can't disable those apps, i don't have root access, i can only force closed them in the App Manager.
When Wifi is OFF the Gallery is completely smooth and fast. When i turned it on, can't use it.

You're welcome @tWoBrO. Disabling Wi-FI is definitely useful as a temporary work-around for non-rooted users. :good:
For whatever reason, AllShare Media apps aren't playing nice with Wi-Fi right now (in our case, maybe others). With Wi-Fi enabled, the gallery app seems to trigger the AllShare services to scan for media that users may want to share with capable devices. Either it's working damn hard in the background to have such a taxing impact on the gallery, or there's a bug or two that needs to be squished.
To my understanding, AllShare is actually a nice feature to take advantage of. I just hope its issues on the Note 3 get resolved.
