Flash support? - Windows 8 General

I have just had to uninstall windows 8 and dropped back to vista flash 11 in 64 bit keeps giving syntax errors and flash is not working?
Any help because if can get flash working will go back to 8.

flash isn't working in immersive
but it does in desktop mode

Thank you, so I removed it for nothing, I was un aware it did not work in immersive. Shall re insta ll probably tomorrow now, hopefully someone works out how to get it working in immersive soon. Until. Then I thank you.

Microsoft Mentioned that IE10-immersive is completely HTML5 no plugin support at all.. So like it was said.. Desktop Version is the same as all the others with full support

So how comes opera 12 is html 5 yet supports flash (then again only 32bit app) Shame immersive does not support flash yet. I'm sure rtm version or a beta will have a Microsoft version of flash built in instead of 3rd party due to lack of add on support

^ no. Not at all.

Actually, that is not so bad. You will not get flash ads and other bloat that just slows down loading and browsing, but if you want to see flash video, there is "view in desktop mode" button.

yeah. IE immersive wont support flash. so there wont be anyway to get it, specially for arm tablets. no ads and no "you need flash to see this video" yeah not cool for Facebook games, but usually video sites are getting html5 and flash.
but if you are like "how i will see YouTube videos if links open in immersive"
if you win + i or go to settings with charm in IE immersive you can go to "default view links for" and you can tell IE to open links in desktop.

^ that option still wont have flash on ARM. The ARM version will not support it.

I think desktop IE on ARM will still support plugins. It's up to adobe to decide if they will develop flash for Windows ARM.

and im not saying it would support it.
are you running Windows dev preview on arm? no, like everyone else. so i dont care about ARM.
but some people dont know you can change the way IE opens links. you know people who will complain how new UI sucks and they dont even explore enough to know how to open links in IE desktop.
the only thing Adobe has talked about is flash based apps in win8 via AIR.

Well, we won't know that. Like we all know, the developer preview is not completely perfect. It's not even near to good.

The Metro browser doesn't support flash, and there are no plans to support it or any other plugins, but there was a lot of negative feedback at BUILD from the developers about the inconsistent browsing experience (in 1 on 1 sessions with microsoft)..
Perhaps flash could be implemented (maybe with cooperation from Adobe) at some point in the future; good or bad, flash is an currently important part of the web.

Flash/Silverlight News for Android

Hey all - one of the things I'd like to see the Android Browser pick up is Flash mobile or Silverlight... Thought I'd make this thread to keep up with news. Last I heard, Silverlight was going to make it possible, but Google was trying to keep Adobe out of it.
Would be awesome to have some Flash Apps and a browser that could run it or something similar!
Anyone else feel the same?
Two of my favorite sites, zillow.com and redfin.com dont work on G1 because of flash.
That would be nice,I was wondering myself if when u visit a website that says u need adobe falsh player, get it here has anyone tried to download it from the website link or you can't?

It just sends you to the standard download place for linux. Doesn't have any in the android format. We'll just have to wait. Luckily, I don't think there's anything stopping adobe from making a flash plugin for the android browser since any1 can make any plugin for anything on android.

It took Adobe 8 years to make the first flash player? I dont think we still have a real flash player for the WM6. Skyfire just blasted through and pretty much suppots everything under the moon on WM6. I wish Skyfire would port on Andriod on day.

Both YouTube and Google video are supported out of the box on the G1.
OK, so they open outside of the browser, but it's no more effort than it would be otherwise.

Ok so YouTube I understand opens in a special software and not inside the familiar browser. How do you open Google Videos?
And there is a big difference between supporting an industry accepted format (flash) and "supporting" flash based YouTube in a special app. There are hundreds of sites we cant access without Flash. What about Hulu and all other good stuff on the web?
Silverlight support on the G1 would be a wonderful thing because THIS and ONLY THIS will encourage Adobe to EVER support flash on the G1.
Don't believe me?
There has never been simultaneous releases of Adobe Flash Player for *nix and windoze but then Microsoft announces Silverlight support for Linux. The result is Adobe Flash Player 10 for both Windows and Linux released at the same time.
Someone just needs to make up some false story about Silverlight working on Android and get enough people to go along with it until Adobe catches wind of it. Then we'll see flash support, but until Adobe has a reason to support Flash on Android we are never going to see it.

Google video works- if it happens to be a Youtube link. There are some 3gp sites like Tinytube that work, but the video buffer underrun is so bad the stream of frames bleeds into each other.
Flash on Android is probably having the same issues as Coreplayer trying to create codecs for Android. The "Java" layer and GSsteamers have to be gone through and this is causing heavy cpu overhead and causing the need to create more complex codecs. The video apps on the g1 market now are simply interfaces for the built in function of the Android OS- no codecs.
I agree that Flash would rock on the G1, but some sites would still be problematic if flash as not an imbedded function of the browser. Videos links would work, but files imbedded into the pages or scripts may not work well- if at all.
We might have to wait until Google goes with Flash and upgrades the OS.
Flash Player on the way...

Sounds like overselling before release to me. I recall there was a handset announced recently that stated support for Word and Excel, I think we all know that doesn't exist yet.
i remember back in december watching a video of flash fully working on a G1 and it's still not been released.
suppose it was buggy as hell or too good/not good enough for the phone, **** knows.

(REQ) Webtop Hacks, Multi-user, Pkg installer

So I have some thoughts on what would make improvments to the devices over all user experiance.
The finger reader is cool, If we could use it to identify two or three people /and/or Have a multi-user support then in the Laptop regard it would be better. Even if it was just Owner/Guest support. I realize that any access other then Owner would open security risk but on the laptop mode this could be a neat thing.
Also Since it is running a lame version of Ubuntu it should support multi user. The Webtop OS, can/should/may support it where I realize that Android isn't really ment for this, it would be a neat option on both OS's.
We really need package manager support in the Webtop. I can't view my bank account correctly due to lack of Java support in firefox and When I attempt to DL and install it, it can't because there is not a package manager. I haven't hacked much at it but it is not there by default.
Of course once the Double rainbow, as some call it, is out then this will be a non-point hence more of a gripe, but if your going to make Ubuntu into a web base OS, why not use Chrome OS, at least it has a App store and a great web browser. (not that firefox isn't but I've been doing chrome since beta).

*sigh* I really wish people would get their heads straight, because I keep seeing this over and over.
Look.
Nobody has access to the source for Chrome OS except for Google. Chrome OS hasn't been released out of beta yet. This isn't a Google Experience device, so there's no chance in hell that it would have Chrome OS.
Similarly, before you ask for Chrome, nobody (except Google, probably) has access to Chrome for ARM, since source isn't available for that either.

[Q] Installing Windows 8 non-partitioned on primary machine

How stupid is it to upgrade to Windows 8 on your main laptop? I use it for photoshop and microsoft office.
I don't have enough space to partition the drive, but I really want windows 8. I just am worried about regretting it.
I have installed it on my main machine, no problems, runs everything I install, I have Photoshop Element 9 and it runs well. Download the Consumer Preview Setup Program, run it first to see if you'll run into problems, you can either continue to install from Setup Program, this will download and install in a accordance with how you wish to install, or you can download .iso, burn to DVD, just cancer Setup Program and install from DVD, I did it that way. Jim
its always best to install a beta OS on either a different partition or second drive. to make it so you can get another partition you have to shrink the space of the current one.
I can say that Photoshop works fine, i don't use MS Office so can't help you there. A second partition or a virtual machine would be your best bet if your unsure though.
I agree. I set up a partition to test all the programs I currently run. They all passed with flying colors (sorry, no PS or MSOffice ).
Once I was satisfied, I deleted the partition, installed 8 on my primary, and now I'm 100% windows 8 on my PC. Loving it!
guys, c'mon, its a beta! Betas expire!
There may be a way to upgrade to purchased W8 without losing everything, then again there may not, we'll have to wait and see. There's definitely not going to be a way to easily "step back down" to windows 7 or older.
Obviously you can backup files and reinstall some programs, but you have to think about this realistically
Im not sure but is the consumer preview out yet?
Bcoz ive been using the developer's pre on my laptop dual booting alongside win 7 ofc...Since its really buggy.....(I.E: While gaming or using a program accidentally clicking on the bottom left side of your screen(clicking the startup button)will bring u back to desktop.
Might aswell wait for the betas coz it feels like it more in an alpha mode right now!
Developer preview was alpha, consumer preview is the beta & much less buggy & out now.
As for upgrading later to full release, it doesn't take much to back up your documents if you have too.
The consumer preview comes in a couple of different flavours, iso & installer. The installer allows you to upgrade windows seven keeping your documents and programs that are known to be compatible. However, that option didn't work for me when I tried it. It would point to Microsoft making an effort to make migration to windows 8 in the future a lot less painful.

that's not a bug, that's by design.
and that holds true for the consumer preview as well, which is out now, has been for a while.

I love windows 8 but...

I have the rtm of pro activated with a legit key for vlsc and when you consider this is supposed to be finished I have found it almost more buggy than release preview. It took ages to get AMD Catalyst installed and it required me to go into device manager to install the driver manually first and that's the windows 8 software. That could be excused its not MS its just beta software. The thing I don't get though is my music plays in media player yet the new metro music app bombs out about 1-2 seconds in on any track and I have tested a few now. The email is almost impossible to work out how to add new email accounts and you can still only have metro apps on one screen and that includes the start menu. This means that even though I have 3 screens if I want to put my email to one side I then have to use that screen for any other work im doing. Yes the multio monitor support has some cool tweeks ie the toolbar on all 3 screens (eyefinity did this anyway) it still ties me to one screen working arg. Also for some reason my ocz agility 3 hard drive only score 6.9 booo something wrong there. Rant over! There is many little bugs crashes but I love the os overall so don't want to look to negative but I was expecting more from rtm.

you cant really hold MS to blame for shoddy driver support on an unreleased product from manufactures who haven't released final drivers (graphics and HDD) the multi monitor thing is a bit of a pain, and the email accounts couldn't be simpler, Media player bombing out sounds like a pretty serious issue and I suspect yet another driver related issue given that its not widespread and so far as I can tell, user specific, which is likely hardware specific
What is lost upon Mac users is that Windows must support a near limitless set of hardware combos, the mere fact it works on most computers is a huge achievement, unfortunately it can have its problems, I have audio issues as well, I very much doubt my sound card manufacture will get new drivers out and will more than likely force me to change hardware, that's a pain, but it is also good business sense
Don't worry bro. I have the same problems. Release Preview is buggy as all hell.
My WMP won't even open without instantly freezing. I've tried both 32 and 64-bit versions. They do open separately without having to use hacks, which I will give it to MS, it's about time.
The mail app barely opens. You have to restart the whole computer to get it working again.
W8 HATES Google Chrome browser. Constantly locking up. Google needs to get it together with that one. I've always hated IE, but since it's 64-bit native, it seems to perform quite nicely. Just need to find some sort of extension to block ads and I'd be good to go. They seem to have made quite the number of improvements to it since last I used it.
Menu options such as "Print" and "delete" have disappeared from the PDF app. They were present in the Consumer and Developers previews.
I have an HP Presario DV7-6165us Notebook, and believe it or not, I think the graphics work better with W8 built-in drivers than the AMD Catalyst ones I later decided to install. It was the same story when I used CP and DP. All the built-in drivers seem to have better performance. Especially the Wifi ones. Bluetooth stock drivers even run everything I need and connect my devices flawlessly, but when I install drivers from HP designed for W7 64-bit, we have problems.
Normal, 3rd party applications freeze on a regular basis. Can't blame MS for that. It's the devs of the applications we have to complain to in order to get them to develop compatibility with W8.
I personally haven't had any compatibility issues with my software, and I had already ironed out a way to install my modded graphics drivers in CP and RP. Chrome works great. Bear in mind I'm running the x86 version as oppose to the x64 one. Overall it runs even better than the previews and the only let down for me was the lack of new features from preview to rtm.

I feel really stupid in the fact that I accidentally did an upgrade install. *facepalm*
Did a custom after "refreshing" the OS, which was a nightmare to complete anyways... but now that's it's pretty much stock, everything works again. XD

Ahhhhh, yes, the "Mac hardware is easy" fable. I love this one. I would type more, but apple patented something I'm doing on my Android phone, so I'll be arrested any moment...
Most of my issues are driver based and so not down to MS directly. My gripe is that this stuff was working in the preview so whatever changes MS made has now brocken almost half of the drivers that did work. Getting my Catalyst to work was a pain but it now does though it took me to manually install the driver then install the software. I will swap out my Asrock motherboard for a sabertooth r2 but i cant see many people wanting to make such changes.
My main MS gripe is the multi monitor support after they made such a big deal about it and it does not do the most basic of functions. this is not an early build driver issue this is a problem with the OS. Plus its one that cant be fixed with a link on the taskbar like the lack of start button. TBH im wandaring what AMD has up its sleaves for eyefinity and how they can get around hot corners(at the mo i turn off outside of games windows+p). Another issue is the music app, this is a bug, i dont know how widespread and once again will be down to some 3rd party but there is nothing that any normal user would not have and media player works so its not down to mp3 drivers or currupt files etc.
As for Macs they have tons of issues themselves and the new OS hardly works on anything. Apple is miles behind and its just thanks to a great marketing dept and the easy peer presure of the modern word that they have become so huge.
Apparently the amd v9 driver works better than the 1 designed for RP

no one said it was easy as such, but if you design an OS around a piece of hardware then it will (you would hope) have been run through the grinder a lot more. Until this last decade trying to get most 3rd party hardware to run on a mac was a pain in the arse, made much easier with the move to x86 I might add but still, its not a fable, unless Apples testing programs are as crap as its customer service!

Well, that all is the reason why RTM is getting available today to Technet and MSDN subscribers and only gets released to regular consumers in October. Developers at hardware companies need to adapt some of their drivers and many things they have to do can only be done now that Microsoft has finished development.
Most of those issues will likely be resolved before Windows 8 hits the streets. I guess most people will get it with a new PC anyway and at least there I expect it to work without problems.

yes just hours now from my Technet download The metro screen issue is still bugging me and i dont see that getting fixed untill blue/windows 8.5. I dont think MS even sees it as an issue yet. My Graphics are working like a charm now bar it seems my fan runs between 80-100% all the time even with low temps so i dont see it being long before thats fixed. Asus has there official drivers out already (gutted now i chose asrock over them but you live and learn). I hope meia center goes live today aswell, i dont really use it much now as my pc is in my living room not the bedroom but its nice to have. just hope music app now works as i really like the look of it and useing zune now just feels old school (shame they droped the zune line would of been good to see an update on the player and had everything work together)

[Q] Newbie questions about W8

Hello everyone,
I hope with your knowledge of the system you will be able to help me with some of my questions.
I would like to make sure that I know what I am doing before swapping to a new system.
Here we go than...
1. I am currently using Netflix and Hulu services via VPN (and Windows 7 + Chrome), will I be able to use them with Windows 8 without any problems?
2. I understand that there is no option to side load apps for the Modern Interface other than from MS Store... is there any way to go round it? Reason for this question is connected to Q1. If I would want to use Netflix/Hulu app instead of browser will I be able to get it? (I suspect that there will be a market geolocalization thing... as it is with WP. In iOS or Android it is not a big problem though...
3. I got my original Windows Vista HP (32b) in my desk, purchased as an OEM... should I install it on my PC before buying an upgrade to WIn 8 Pro? What other options than "upgrade W8Pro" will there be for ppl. to purchase new system...
4. If I get a tablet/hybrid to replace iPad with more versatile device (x86 architecture) will I have to get 2 browsers...2 mail clients, etc... in order to be able to work in both modes desktop/modern? Considering that such a device will have limited disk space it seems like a problem. As far as I know modern interface is not really an interface but it is more like a second separate and quite independent system. This means that if I open Word/browser/mail in one mode and move on to continue to work in second I will have to start those app again and data between them will not be synchronised? Yes?
Like... all those program started in Modern Interface will no be visible and accessible on my task bar in desktop mode...
5. Along with changing system on my desktop and getting replacement for my iPAd I am thinking about swapping my phone. I use Lumia 710 and as much as I like the general feel of WP I hate that it is even more "closed" than iOS. Will I loose or gain functionality if I'll get Android device instead of WP8?
1, yes not a prob at all its the same as windows 7
2, I am 99% sure this will be hacked soon but you could also go for Enterprise edition or get a dev license (if you can get an edu email then you don't even need to pay)
3, not to sure myself sorry I have software assurance and so didn't look this up.
4, Windows 8 has a built in mail app (can be removed), you shouldn't think of it as 2 interfaces but more that you have some metro apps some x86 apps the desktop and the modern interface are as one. This whole hula balu about 2 diff interfaces is rubbish. Also the main browser is the one used in metro so you don't download a second one you just set it as your main one and you have both interfaces.
5, depends on what you mean by functionality, both os's have there strong and weak points it really Is down to how you use it and whatyou want from the phone.

This whole hula balu about 2 diff interfaces is rubbish. Also the main browser is the one used in metro so you don't download a second one you just set it as your main one and you have both interfaces.

Hi,
thanks for your answer.
2. Can you give me more details about it? What is Enterprise edition and about this edu e-mail address...How does it all work...
4. Can I start desktop apps in Metro (can they be pinned?) or vice versa? IE10 is default in Metro - if I use default Metro mail app... can I change default browser to Chrome (btw: how does it work in Win8...as in Win7? Or are there any differences).
IE10... does it sync between devices like Chrome?
I install enterprise edition but I get no sound it may be the drivers but I am not sure realtek has drivers for windows 8 yet

2. As with other versions of Windows you get multiple versions depending on your needs budget etc. Windows 8 come in Windows RT (ARM version (does not support old style x86 software, this is for cheap tablets etc and will only be sold preinstalled)), Windows 8 (basic version), Windows 8 Pro and then Windows 8 Enterprise. Enterprise has a few extra features for big business and own of them is the ability to side load metro apps meaning a company can write custom metro software.
The thing with the edu email is that .edu is for educational institutions schools university's etc. So that MS can get students using its products they let you have a dev license free for the time your in study. All you need to do is find someone who has an email from a school college etc and sign up with there email. I used my dads he is a lecturer. With a dev license you can unlock a couple of devices.
4. There is no 2 separate things here metro and desktop are NOT 2 diff working spaces. Try to think of the start screen as the same thing as the start menu from the old windows except instead of just a list it fills the screen. You can put any app software etc on this screen the same as you could before with the start menu. Older software does have ugly icon squares but there is a thread here with software to make your own metro style icons. The one thing to note though is that you can only open metro apps on 1 monitor ie you cant pin your mail app to one screen and then open cut the rope on another. This is not true for the desktop. Metro apps also open in there own sandbox environment, this means they can not interact with anything outside of themselves, they can share info etc but they cant change anything and so on.

2. Ok.. I guess I'll have to wait and see what is out there and for how much.
Are you sure that with dev licence I will be able to use US Store/UK Store/etc... as I please?
4. Do I read you correctly (I do work with 2 screens) that I will not be able to have Chrome (I believe it does not support Metro yet) on both screens (to get data and to write in the second). One would thought that I should be able to have any combination of software/apps I want on both screens - Metro x Metro; Desktop x Metro; Metro x Desktop; Desktop x Desktop.
Truly strange and quite disturbing...
New questions :
Are there apps for Metro from Hulu, Netflix, BBC (iPlayer)?
Will they be OK to use with VPN tunnelling or I will have to use browser any way...
Will Hulu work on tablet/hybrid with x86 Windows 8 or will it say I am using mobile device (as it is with iOS/Android) and will not work in its Free version.

Chrome does now support Metro you just have to have it set as your default browser. The 2 screens is only Metro style apps so yes you cant have 2 metro style chromes but you can still open as many desktop/old style chromes as you want just as you did in windows 7. With dual screen one screen will always display its half of the desktop the metro start screen only goes onto 1 monitor. It is that one monitor that metro apps will run. It is a huge blunder in my opinion but what can you do.
If you are running a desktop pc esp with multi monitors then you wont notice to much diff in looks and feel. You will notice a huge jump in speed though but a loss of transparent windows . It is also worth putting a start link on the taskbar as sometimes getting the corner between screens is tricky (well not tricky but faster if you have a bigger target), just google "show start.exe".
As for the marketplace from diff country that I don't think would be possible I thought you where talking about side loading apps. You may be able to with the use of vpn but I cant confirm this.
Ok, thanks for the info.
I guess the best would be to simply try Win8 before I buy it.
3 (new) questions than:
What is the latest ver. of Win 8 I should download?
I do not own any VM software - is there (an easy) way to test Win* under Win7 (I dont mind that system will not be as fast, etc... but I would be able to see how it works...)
If I would have to make a proper install of Win8 on my PC... how hard will it be to go back to my current Win7?
As I keep 90% of ma data either in the cloud or on a on a different partitions on my drives formatting C: is not a problem... but I have read that once Win 8 is installed Win7 does not want to format this drive and install itself on it.... true?

Your best bet is to use a diff hard drive that way you can dual boot into windows 7 and windows 8 then when your done unplug the hard drive test you can boot into 7 still then format. This is the best way though I have heard of issues going back I have never had any, you boot to a disk then format the drive when you install 7 so I don't see how it could be, maybe they are trying to keep there files etc ie downgrade instead of a new install.
you can get a 90 day trial of rtm (the final build as it will be sold) here http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/jj554510.aspx But note you will need to uninstall it and reinstall if you want to keep using windows 8 after the 90 days.
Last thing,
I plan to install Win8 (today) on my external 160GB disk.
It will be connected to my PC via e-Sata... any advice before I proceed?
I dont want to put it on disk where is my current Win7 as I need it daily to work... so this should work... right? (motherboard is old; Abit Ab9Pro)
If this hasn't already been answered, I use tor for Netflix and it doesn't work will on windows 8. I can load the home but then it goes back to the UK version. It works fine on 7.

Sorry I got bit confused...
Where do you use it (UK or USA)?
You try to access Netflix via VPN and Metro app or browser?
I'm in the UK and I use tor to access the US version with desktop chrome and proxy switchy to act as a Tor button.

Perhaps it is a TOR (and selected exit node) problem...
Try this 3h trial of VPN (free) and see if it is working - http://www.hideipvpn.com/freetrial/
Do you use Chrome under desktop or Modern UI mode?
Can you recommend a good (free) set of video codecs? I cant play mkv at the moment
