In the what would be the newest Android OS 2.4, what changes do you think it'll bring, or what do you hope to see?
Correct me if I'm wrong on the version number.
The version is suppose to be 3.4 or 4.0

if youre talking about the Ice Cream Sandwich update, I think it will be 2.4. Honeycomb is 3.0+, I dont think theyll call it 4.0 unless they drastically change things. but check out Ice Cream Sandwich launcher, should be in the dev or theme/app section. has some "projections" of what it will look like

We don't even have froyo never mind gingerbread. Honeycomb is next and that's 3.0 and they haven't even started working on that and your worried about ice cream being 2.4. Ice cream would be 3.x since google goes in alphabetical order

Fair enuff but gingerbread was just finished. I'm sure there taking a short break and then working on honeycomb. I wouldn't expect 2.4 our ice cream in the summer if this rumor is true

Honeycomb is all but done my friend. It's been seen running on tablets already and rumor has it we may even see a Honeycomb tablet next month.
Here's Google's leaked demo of Honeycomb. I'm pretty sure that's not all CG'ed.
EDIT- I can't help but notice that FroYo was released last Summer, Gingerbread released during the holidays, Honeycomb will be showing up in late winter / early spring, and Ice Cream again in the summer. Interesting!

My guess is that they renamed gingerbread to "ice cream" for the phones instead of calling it gingerbread also

I didn't realize honeycomb was done already. From what I see is honeycomb will be tablet only. My question is if the tablets get 3.0 and smart phones get 2.3 what's going to happen after 2.9?
I never realized there update schedual to you pointed it out.

The OS version dubbed honeycomb may be tablet only, nothing about that means that phones won't see past 3.0
Unified versions. Phone OS and tablet OS will eventually merge into a single OS.

Yeah, all signs point to Honeycomb being tablet-only. It looks like they will go to 2.4 for Ice Cream and at some point they will merge the two as muyoso mentioned.
I'll bet Google put a different team on Honeycomb then they did on Gingerbread; I'm sure they collaborated but since Honeycomb is going to split off as the Tablet branch of the Android tree, they've probably got a separate team working on all the Tablet features like sorting out app / resolution conflicts and tablet UI enhancements. Anyhow this would explain the relatively short time between launches.
From my understanding Google wants the Chrome OS on tablet and netbook. I think honeycomb is something to hold tablet people over til Chrome is ready. And Android has already jumped a lot of numbers they can easily jump 3.x and go to 4 for phones.

Chrome OS is going to get dropped or at very least put on the shelf for a while. Android is too popular for Google to abandon it at this point. Its on everything. Also, at this point chrome os is no where near ready to publicly launch for consumers. Consumers would hate the OS for the most part. It offers zero advantages over android. Also, it looks like Honeycomb is running some modified version of chrome, so I am sure chrome OS apps will work on honeycomb. Maybe it wont be natively, but if there is a reason to do it, XDA will provide.

Ah don’t you just love the way the Google guys keep on with the sweet names for their Android operating system, sooner or later they will run out of ideas, but not for the next version of their OS which will apparently be called Ice Cream.
According to an article over on the Boy Genius Report by Andrew Munchbach, a report by Pocket-lint says according to “multiple sourse familiar with the matter,” the Android 2.4 Ice Cream operating system is to be released by Google sometime in either June or July of this year.
Furthermore apparently Google is expected to announce this during Google I/O 2011 in San Francisco in May. Android Ice Cream will be the next in a long line for desert-style naming from Google with the Android platform receiving Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread and then Android Honeycomb for Android tables, and now Ice Cream, one wonders where it will all end.
That’s all that’s known about the new operating system no word on just what to expect improvement wise or feature wise when Ice Cream finally makes it into the Android space. Any of our readers care to hazzard a guess at what Android 2.4 Ice Cream will deliver?

Nice info, thanks for sharing!
I thought the name would be Ice Cream Sandwich as mentioned in the second link.. still nice
But the versionnumber 2.4 is hard to believe when we are already at 2.3 even before Honeycomb. Even if (which I seriously doubt) Google would seperate their software in 2 different "branches" the newest branch will unlikely have a lower version number.
Just my 2 cents

When will the G2 get android 3.1, the expected ice cream sandwich version with the famous gpu acceleration after its release?
We are on waiting list to get gingerbread soon most probably in august

Haha that's funny. We are still waiting for Gingerbread since its release and your asking about Ice cream. I doubt the G2 will ever see it without rooting.

Dont think the G2 will get Ice Cream. Think it will stop at Gingerbread. Feel Ice Cream is gonna be optimized for dual core devices.
i thought ice cream sandwich was going to be 2.4. that is what i have read on most of the websites. Read that google was going making 3.x a tablet os and keep 2.x as a phone os. If that does i see it continuing with even numbers being phone os and odd being table os.

nop not for dual cores only
...and it's putting a stop to Android fragmentation...
There's nothing worse than your friends having a more recent Android version than what you have, and thus getting cool new features. Google said they want "one OS that runs everywhere." They're going to do this by adapting the framework and adding new APIs "to help developers optimize for all various devices." Naturally, they're going to be open source.
I just read on google that T-mobile said G2 end of life will be soon. I doubt the G2 will see anything past Gingerbread.

If we do see ICS it is going to be because of the rom community supporting it, not the carrier. I sincerely doubt we'll see a G3 come down the pipes within the year. I can only think that HTC will keep with the two year gap like they did with the G1-G2. When they do, I would imagine that it will be running ICS, probably around mid July next year.
Admittedly this is all speculation.
That worries me tooo

This link means not only for dual core, but for every android device ice cream will be optimized for, therefor I think we will see ice cream sandwich update, they can't leave us like this.

T-mobile has the G2 as approaching end of life in the system, we are nearing that point. Cyanogen will still have us covered for ICS, I'm not worried.

Frankly i can't wait till the drop of ICS. I'm supporting my buddy in getting the latest of updates so moving over to a super stable rom will be a godsend.
I seriously don't want to flash ice cream in the G2 I really want the official update that we should get because ice cream will be optimized to fit all android devices. But for now we are waiting for gingerbread and after that we can hope to receive the ice cream update from htc

3.1 is not ice cream sandwich. That's going to be android 4.0 which hasn't even been released yet buddy.

Although 3.1 is rocking. Looking forward to the usb peripheral support. Toshiba thrive out next month. Grabbing it the day it comes out.
I read somewhere units with micro usb supporting 3.1 can still utilize this function with an adapter.
Fyi 3.1 is still honey comb

sorry 4.0 then. i ask because i saw a article somewhere from like may or somthin of 2010 that said wed be getting it soon so was just wondering if it ever came out. didnt know its not even in beta yet...
Ice Cream Sandwich is going to be farrrrr away. And I believe it's going to be 2.4
It's going to appear first on the Nexus 3 later this winter, probably around Christmas. So take account the time for Google to open source it, and then for Cyanogen to cook it up... We'll probably won't see Ice Cream Sandwich on this phone until early next year. Probably around Jan-Feb at the earliest.
Our first chance of seeing IceCreamSammich on this phone will likely be with CyanogenMod when ICS is released to AOSP. I'm too big a fan of some of the Sense underpinnings and apps (camera, browser) to use CM7, but for ICS, I might just go with CM8.
yea i use dolphin browser and the camera is the only thing i like about sense roms... aosp are so raw royal ginger is where its at ... bluemagic theme with adw ex is dope
I just read this article saying that the Nexus 4G will be Android 4.0 "Ice Cream Sandwich".

AOSP is the only way to go.
w/ either LPP or ADW/EX.
I think it would make the most sense to make Ice cream Sandwich 4.0. 3.x is tablets, 2.x is smartphones. since it doesn't fit in either specifically, it probably will need a new number.
And chances are it will leak out on to phones through the SDK at some point. I've heard that the emulator for the versions is released long before it is open sourced so devs can make apps for it. people are expecting it to appear in the SDK as early as Q3 this year. We can hope, right?
is it possible to port MIUI to the A500?
miui is gingerbread, and the a500 runs honeycomb. no reason to downgrade amirite? there is no hc source either, so it looks like miui will never have a honeycomb version, same goes for cyanogenmod. it looks like we're gonna have to wait for ice cream sandwich
