Hi folks!
I don't mean to harm any developer, which in my opinion are real heroes by their attempts in perfecting the GT10.1 ROM, given the circumstances when Google didn't release the source code of Honeycomb.
I want to share my personal experience with those ROM's. I tried all of the available ROM's in this forum. Used each of them for at least a couple of days. Played with Kernel and OC, odexed and de-odexed, optimized and themed - every bit of available MOD I tried. I was in my search of the best and fine-tuned ROM.
But what I found were mostly stability problems, some strange bugs and FC's that anoyed me a lot. And, to be honest, I could not feel real performance gain and smoothness, even when using the OC Kernel.
So I gave up and restored my GT10.1 with stock TW ROM (un-rooted). And, voila! The GT is mostly stable, the FC's are very rare and the OS interface is smooth like silk!
Is there anyone else in this forum with the same personal experience?
Same situation here. I tried them all and stock TW ROM is the most stable and smoothest. I am a heavy user of my tablet. I think Ive gotten a force close only once with the stock ROM after 2 months of use while I got force closes at least twice a week with any of the ROMs here. Not only that but you are risking damaging your battery by flashing ROMs and Kernels other than stock like shown in this thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1215182
You didnt see a performance increasing over the stock TW ROM because there is no performance increase and this is a fact. Stock ROM with TouchWiz already has hardware accelerated GUI, which is why its so silky smooth similar to ipad. Some of the ROMs you see here dont even have hardware accelerated GUI.
Some of the devs here IMO are going too far for their capability and are unaware what they are changing inadvertently causes issues in other areas. All the force closes, bugs, stability issues, and likelihood of damaging your battery is evidence of this.

I also think stock tw rom is best for this tablet so far.
I'm using task650's rom and it is a definite improvement over stock. The main difference is in smoothness, especially moving between screens. Also using pershoots kernel.
I don't have any bugs to speak of, no force closes and no issues with the battery.

Yes damage the battery. Many people are unable to return their battery to its normal state. Not only that but recalibration does not return the battery to its full capacity. Its a very serious issue and its all caused by flashing ROMs other than stock touchwiz.

This is an issue even with stock not rooted, it has more to do with some of the chips that are used to track the battery and not the actual rom. This has been an issue for other android devices as well, and what happens is that the software does not seem to know exactly what the actual state of the battery is. Instead it tries to base this information off of past data.
I had the battey drainage issue, but after recalbrating it I have not had this issue ever again, and my battey life is great. Thats why Samsung recommends plugging in your tab to charge it to full, and then run it dead the first time.
What I noticed was that the software reported that the battey was dead, when in fact it was still fully charged. So I searched XDA and found some good information.
Most of the FCs I have ever gotten where from loading apps that conflict with each other. Like that version of the market that someone posted. Went back to the stock market app and all my problems went away.

and by flashing 3rd party ROM/Kernel you are just asking for this issue to arise on your unit. Statistics do not lie. Everyone who is having this issue has gotten it just after they flashed 3rd party ROM/Kernel. Read the threads if you dont believe me. I have not seen even one person who has gotten this issue from the stock ROM.

You obviously haven't done your research bro. Tw do NOT have its GUI hardware accelarated. If you would be a knowledgeable as you say with all your input you would have already dug into the file yourself to see that. They didn't even activate the launcher!! ! No damage to battery either bro. That would be like saying do not turn off or on your tablet because it will cause battery damage. Or don't run too many apps or Widgets because it will damage your battery. This thread is ridiculous.

I've played with all of them and the best for battery life, signal and over all just awesome is DamageControl 3.2.2.1 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=700649
I really like AOSP, so Bugless Beast has been nice. I don't really dislike the HTC homescreen or lockscreen, but I don't like the contacts, text messaging app, music app, browser, etc.
However bugless beast has some rough spots, there is an fc that shows up once in a while (not a problem, just annoying) and it doesn't show up as a usb drive on the computer all the time.
Fresh is probably my second favorite, and it isn't far behind even though it is almost straight Sense. I see a lot of people say it is their favorite. It seems like it may be the most robust and stable custom ROM as well, but I haven't tried all of them, only half a dozen or so.
I like Bugless Pete's...
but moved on to Fresh because I like Sense. Plus I like the fact I can use apps2sd.
This is a matter of opinion. You need to decide for yourself. I am using Culkulins ROM and really like it. In b4 this is moved to general / q&a
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
Only tried Fresh and Damage Control so far but I like DC better, I could tell an immediate difference in performance, unlike with Fresh. Both have Apps2sd which is a must for me. Apparently this phone has more app storage than most other Android phones, yet not even close to enough for me. I couldn't even put any graphic intensive games like Asphalt on before apps2sd due to lack of room.
Damage Control works great for me as far as 2.1 roms. Just look at the activity for that thread.... most popular IMO and for good reason with all of the dconfig options and updates. They were one of the first to incorporate the OTA update into their rom... they stay on top of things.
So Frech has the HTC Sense? I'd like that.
Also, will installing these different ROMs wipe my data? If so, what backup utility you recommend?
I like the fresh rom, but i'm using DC atm because of the OTA update built into it, i need the grounding fix but when fresh fixes it i'll be moving back.

I use titanium backup for the app data backup/restore and android commander for the app program backup/restore.
Damage Control also has Sense, though you have the option to disable it.
In case it hasn't been said enough yet - DamageControl all the way. Awesome ROM!
I dont mean to be a d**k but you have to read and experiment on your own. There's no such thing as the "best" rom. Clearly all the devs here put a lot of work into their roms and the least you can do is try it and see which you like the most. Are you even rooted?? Your questions give the impressions that you don't even know the basics of rooting or installing your own roms...read the stickies
and yes both Fresh and DC have the Sense UI
I use a modified Damage Control myself
Added in the latest busybox, Bash 4.1, made some tweaks to dalvik-cache to make it use the cache partition instead of the system partition (seriously, the cache partition is ~160megs and barely gets touched normally ), among other things.
It is worth noting that Damage Control (in my opinion) is quite good itself and stays pretty up to date, with a lot of nice features.
DamageControl my fav so far.

I understand, but I figured that by seeing what the recommendations are, I'd be able to exclude some unmentioned ROMs. Makes sense...
I am not rooted at the moment, but I am familiar with it (developed for my HTC Dash years ago). I haven't had much time at all to dive into rooting until nw. Unfortunately, the OTA update was run on this device so now I'm at the mercy of the devs around here to discover a workaround.
Damage rom for the battery life. Seriously guys , if anyone and I mean anyone is *****ing and moaning about battery life , then they haven't tried DC's rom yet. And if Damage ain't on then trevE will answer.
I find a close second in polish and likability is Fresh's rom. Great rom . And I've run that one too.
I also ran Finisher by magnus.
And the froyo by avalaunch. Which is great but I need my camara and I hate having to flash to get it and then flash back.
I've also flashed Hero's over rom. But i didn't like the guys attitude in a couple of posts so I took it off.

Im actually a really nice guy. I just let my personal life interfere with my development life. Ive apologized multiple times and will once more. Im sorry. My ROM sucks btw lol
Aren't you getting tired of the "This rom update is great, it's even faster!"
Haven't been around and flashing for too long, started with the sgs1 and got the sgs2 now.
With every rom update there are always a bunch/lot of dudes who say "Wow thanks! My [insert device] is even faster now!"
If you would read for example the whole Darky rom thread for the sgs1, you would think the latest version of the Darky ROM (after about a hundred updates) the phone should be as fast as the latest supercomputer.
Just a thought I wanted to share with you guys.
i agree.. infact the KF1 seems to be sluggish then KE7.. i have noticed that in KF1 the android system uses less battery.. duuh .. no wonder its sluggish.. they tried to minimise power consumpption and in doing so have made it sluggish

that is the thing with flashing methods that do (or require) a reset.
of course it is faster than before, because you just set up your phone from start and dont have the crap on it like before. it's like saying "hey, windows 7 is so much faster, because after i installed it it was faster than my 3 year running windows xp installation".
it is really difficult to judge speed if flashing incorporates a reset.
tbf im still on the stock rom, im waiting for people to say, hey this rom is super fast+has a good battery etc. I dont think that magic firmware has come yet.
dont forget the placebo effect.
people flash new roms, where literally nothing is different to stock apart from root.
so why are we doing it?
because we are leet people far away from being normals. so we need cutomized stuff. even when the stock rom is working well.

The sgs2 is already fast out of the box, I don't think we will encounter any rom at all wich will give you a noticable speed difference. It's more about the features this time around, and the current roms don't really provide much features. Some nice cosmetic stuff tho.
The other thing is how many people with minor problems are those that have rooted and flashed various roms? My phone is stock and has none of the niggly problems that appear on the forums

whining within groups is great.
So I'm really struggling here. I hate using stock ROM's because the battery life really blows and they are slow.
I've flashed a number of custom ROM's that speed up the phone significantly and drastically improve battery life. The only problem is after a few days of use I almost always start to get intermittent problems like random reboots, force closes and texts not going through etc.
I always follow the install instructions to a "t" and I still get problems. I must be missing a step somewhere along the way or not fully understand the cons of running custom ROM's or something.
I'm at my wits end. At one time I thought it must be the phone so I swapped with Sprint but I still have the same problems.
Currently I am running Scrambled EGgs22 V7 and I love it (when it works). I've tried bonsai, urban roms, you name it. Its the same results with every one. They work fantastic at first and then slowly become unusable.
Is there anybody out there who has experienced something similar to this and can help me remedy?
Having journaling enabled does help with data corruption if you find yourself having to start over a lot due to force closes.
Are you under/overclocking and/or undervolting at all? IIRC, stock speeds are ~400/1000Mhz.
Sounds like journaling is youjr answer. Make sure it is enabled and never pull the battery without shutting the phone completely down..after the vibration.

True, that is why your $400 device comes with stock ROMs that are RFS so none of these FCs happen unless a third party app is written poorly. If you run custom ROMs these are the chances and prices you pay.
A $2000 computer still requires regular backups for the very same reason.

BUT! Your forgetting something: you paid $400 for a phone
which Sammy provided to you via the vender of your choice with a STOCK ROM preloaded which works that way they have wanted.
Now from the moment you came over to the dark side and preloaded a rom there are good things and bad things that come with the package and you can't blame sammy for them.
Also, this is the world of trial and error: what may work fine for 500 phones will not work sometimes with yours. Every part of your phone though it could of been made the same day and from the same batch of my phone, are different and this will make you have different results.
Keep that in mind, your in a world that pose much risk to your device, but that's the fun part! Taking the risk and rolling with it!

I don't have any problems with the stock rom. I'd love to have a stock rom that doesn't blow on battery life.
I understand that there are risks and pros and cons with custom roms but I can't seem to get a custom rom that is stable in any way shape or form. I assume that its my fault because I don't see anybody else having the same problems.
I guess I'm just looking for some help in getting a "half decent" custom rom experience but I can't even get that far. Without fail, every time I load a custom rom I get force closes and random issues. Then I go back to stock rom and I'm charging after two hours of use. I can't win.
@mark8503 I'll give that stock EG22 leak a shot and see what happens.
Thank you for everyone's help!
@mark8503
I assuming this is the stock rom you speak of:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1183558
and this is the kernel:

Please confirm.
IMO, if turning journaling on slowed down your phone enough for you to notice, something went wrong
I've run the on and off zips, and the difference is hard to see
Also, since RFS has a journal feature, I can't see how EXT4 with journaling on would be slower, all other factors being the same
You want stable and solid, ODIN an EC05 modem, install SRF 1.2, do you voltage setting, and call it a day
If you want the bleeding edge, you just have to accept you need precautions, as on the edge, **** happens.
Pick your poison and go with it

5:50 pm and battery is awesome! So far so good, this deodexed stock EG22 is running great, no FC's, no random reboots and battery life is excellent with chris41gs kernel. I just hope I didn't jinx it.
I'll report back after a few days of use.
i love this ROM. tried a few others, but wanted a clean ROM with limited theme-ing. GPS works great. battery seems better. only thing that was missing was Google Talk with video capability, but found that add-on which is flashable through CWM. i feel like i have the perfect phone now. i'm a newbie, so couldn't post this on the development threads, but THANK YOU toadlife!!!
here's the CleanGB ROM thread:

Agreed toad has done a great job with his rom and is so very responsive to feedback and quick to fix any issues. Plus I love his commitment to open source and the gpl. I also like how he is ignoring the tweaks and scripts and focusing on stability.
Sent from my Epic - auto correct mistakes and all.
Been waiting for a rom like this forever. I usually have problems with FCs every custom rom by now. But this one isz a winner~ maybe because of it being so close to stock, but without CIQ.

Clean GB ROM by toadlife was the first GB ROM I installed = no problems whatsoever - easily recommend it to everyone
what they said....
Ditto....I recently rooted and went with CleanGB as my first non-stock ROM. I'm seeing noticeable battery improvements and good quandrant stats. I'm quite pleased.
Thanks for the gtalk video link....I'll be doing the same.
So, who knows how to mod the boot animation on the CleanGB ROM?

DL the Paid version of ROM Toolbox from the Market = it allows you to change it ( plus some other useful stuff it can do )
That Gtalk app screws up the LBE Security app I had installed. Does anybody know if it messes up any other apps.
Wonder why it does that.

Market is having problems recognizing my apps on SD card after I updated this ROM. Anyone else having this problem ? I don't have enough posts to post in the dev section.

X2.... First ROM I have ever installed!
Awesome Rom without a doubt, been running since it came out. Usually Jump Around Trying them all out. Happy Here!!! Keep up the Good Work!!!
I almost started a thread like this last week, because I've used a lot of GB roms, ever since they started leaking. CleanGB is easily the best one out there. Everything about my phone always works now. That's a nice feature to have in a ROM. Unless the Epic is your second phone, or you don't do anything important ever, reliability should always come first. CleanGB is what the Epic should have been from the manufacturer.
Everything that should be there, without anything that shouldn't.
Super reliable - everything works.
Great battery life.
Nice and fast, with no slow downs for me.
A clean, subtle, and improved theme.
What more could you ask for?
Yea.. I just installed this ROM and love it so far..
I'm looking to install JUST the 10lock mod that's compatible with this ROM..
do anyone have a link for it??
all the ones I see are themed.. I don't really want to theme anything.. I just want the mod..
Please help if you can..
Thanks,
This is the first ROM I installed. I resisted b/c I don't want another time sink. But Toadlife is right. CleanGB is for people who just want their phone to work.
I realized today that I LIKE my phone. Before, I was really disapointed with it.
THANK YOU TOADLIFE.
Snowy70... I had the same issue and I had to restore my backup and reflash this ROM. Since then no issues.

How is the Battery compared to Stock Gingerbead? Ive Tried dozens of Roms but ended up back on stock and since ive gone back my battery last twice as long
This ROM is great, I have 2 people in my family with Epic 4G's and they wanted a good stable phone, so I installed this ROM for them and they have had no complaints. Awesome work toadlife!

have it running on the 3 epics in my household and we love this rom. great battery buttery smooth and quick.
Have shied away from custom ROMs due to issues introduced and been on rooted stock but this sounds like it's worth giving a shot. So far so good with everything working.
My favorite rom for sure! Stable, fast, and great battery!
put this on my phone last night and it fixed all of the issues i was having from the other 2 roms i was having and the data was running so much faster.
think this is the only rom i'll be running from here on out
Hey,
I just wanted to ask does the custom roms really worth rooting? in comparison to the google stock rom how much faster and more battery efficient are the custom rom that specialize in those fields? (i.e. LiquidSmooth from what I could gather) and how much more/less stable are they from the stock rom?
Thank you.
Experience differs from user to user. The most conclusive way to get an answer is to try it out yourself. For me, PA has been just as fast as the stock ROM and had equally good battery life, but I have had the occasional random reboot. To me that's a miniscule trade-off for the features you get. You won't really get a ROM that's significantly faster than a stock ROM though because the hardware on the phone is good enough that everything feels fast.

I would recommend you try both and stick with the one that works best for you. Only you can determine which one you like more. The N4 is easy to install a custom rom on (even from stock). Plus with the backup apps out there you don't have to risk losing your data and starting over. No two users are identical and what works for one may not work for another.
For what it's worth, I've flashed back to stock/locked/unrooted because I never came to depend on the features the different roms gave me. I'm getting older and don't have the time to stay current on the different roms and features. All I need for my phone are apps/features that are found in the stock rom and the google store. Battery life is better on a custom rom but it's not worth it to me to continue my "flashaholic" ways. I still get through a day sometimes a day and a half on the stock rom - which is all I need. My use case could be drastically different than yours so don't do what I did unless you know it will work for you.
The developers here do great work and it's a great community so I would recommend you try them all to see which one you like the most.
Good luck.
You need to find the answer yourself.

its not about me testing for myself because i'm not looking for features or special stuff i can get along with everything i'm really just looking for the fastest most battery saving ROM, thats it, I play little to almost no games basicly mail and scanning and stuff like that(i'm a student right now) and soon i'll be writing some apps for myself for security purposes so I need something to really milk that Quad Core for all its worth so I also need some CPU tweaking apps(not sure if thats ROM related)
You'll be very happy with Sabermod or Rasbean both close to stock. Sabermod is the only Rom built using the 4.8 chaintool and is very fast. The battery life is also excellent. I recommend those 2 for a close to stock experience with some useful tweaks both fast smooth and solid.

Thank you for your input.
Any other opinions?
and by the way, excuse my ignorance but what does it mean 4.8 chaintool? what makes it faster then the 4.7 or the older ones? and since its really new im guessing, does it mean its less stable then the other ROMS? and when you say excellent battery life, its in comparison to all those other ROMS that aim for max battery life?
Thank you!
If you really want more battery life or smoothness then IMO you should just install a new kernel; Franco's kernel has great battery life but it still has better performance than stock, Trinity kernel is super fast and smooth, and there's loads more options available.
I'm running CM10.1 and Franco kernel and its very stable, barely ever have any sort of bugs or random reboots

I run CM10.1. Close to stock, but has a few options that are nice to have especially if you like to customize your phone. There are other Roms that have more options, but to me, what's in CM is enough. It's really up to you.
With that being said, I recently flashed a stock rooted rom and got MUCH better battery life than on CM. I don't know if it was an app I had or what, but stock definitely gave me better battery life. I have tried kernels and Rom combinations, but always come back to CM with every single phone I've had. But, in my experience on the Nexus 4, stock Rom gives me the best battery life.
For me liquidsmooth is brilliant! Extremely fast while having tons of customization options. Pair it with matr1x and it really is a great combo for speed and battery life. This is only my opinion but it works for me. I got over 22000 on antutu with this combination (no overclock) while I think its around 17000 on stock. I also get significantly better battery life compared to stock.
if you really want a bump in battery and performance, i suggest rooting and just install francos kernel.i've tried every rom on this forum and for me i ALWAYS find my way back to stock for me it just feels the most fluid and everything works like it should. like me you dont play games or anything and im no app hoarder.that said stock rom with francos kernel gives me the best of everything including color/gamma tweaks to make your screen look better with his app.
with that said i suggest to check out different kernels

Now, if we install franco's kernel onto the Stock ROM, will this prevent any future Google updates from being installed?

Updates in any form will show up in the forum and no need to simply rely on Google for them. They have recently released an updated kernel which I see being implemented by some rom developers and kernel developers already. Let's understand what we have here guys, a community of constant building additions/updates to our phones. So updates should be the last thing for you to worry about IMO
Also to me OP some of the questions you asked can all be answered with a simple Google Search, not that the answers given here are wrong but you would probably find more in depth and uniformed answers by looking it up.. Quite sure its on a wiki somewhere...

I believe he means Google ota's and yes it can stop you from getting ota's. Any modification to system. Whether you added or removed something will fail. You would have to be on complete stock for it to work. Just download yourself a nexus 4 toolkit. The latest factory image, latest drivers, and make sure you backup your internal storage on your computer. Use the tool to return your phone back to stock. Of course whenever you feel is tge right time to do so.

Oh no I fully understood what he meant and my point was simply people unroot or stay stock to wait for an update. Whether you are rooted or not the update will find you in some form. Either with a rooted stock rom or a custom rom but rest assure that xda will not let an update happen and its not on everyone's phone :good:
