Is it worth going from stock to MoDaCo?

Hello-
First off, please excuse my n00bness - I'm from the world of Windows Mobile hacking, and this Android stuff is really confusing me.
I've been tolerating stock for a while, but the slowness is really getting to me - today I clocked my Hero at 12 seconds to wake up from standby, which is just unacceptable. I'd like to know if there are any significant speed benefits to going from stock to the latest MoDaCo rom? Are there any downsides? I read the post over at modaco.com, but couldn't see any "known issues".

Take the plunge.

I went from stock to Fresh and overlayed Modaco. My uptime shot to 90%, 80% and stuck at 70%.
I reflashed to Stock then back to Modaco. I am now at around 15% uptime. I removed the bloatware from Sprint and LOVE the speed of this phone now. Its what I expected when I bought it.

I have no doubt that you'll see a speed increase with Modaco. Especially if you remove the sprint apps once you load Modaco.

Thanks for all the replies. One more question though, are there any big known issues with the latest MoDaCo? I thought I read something about BT not working, or something to that extent.

it's worth it to switch to any custom rom. bluetooth is just something thats messed up with our 1.5 builds.

you will notice a big difference switching to modaco 2.2... and im not experiencing any BT issues at all... matter or fact, im not experiencing ANY issues with anything using this rom...

Heck, anything is better than stock.

especially since we have a custom kernel now its definitely worth it to go to any custom rom, especially modaco 2.2

Im using fresh. I used the kitchen to root my phone and installed 1.1. No problems so far except that the voice recorder app keep crashing for some reason. I did an upgrade without wiping though so that might be my problem.
Its a lot faster and the tether app is awesome!

Ok, so far so good. Got everything flashed, but how do I get rid of things like Stocks/Sprint TV/NFL/etc? Just follow the generic guide (for any rooted Hero) I saw?

I ran stok for about 6 hours and decided that I didnt pay that much money for a smart phone that was that slow.
I flashed Fresh 1.0 to start and I have tried just about all the roms that are out there. Including modaco 2.2 and it may just be that I started with fresh but I always seem to go back to it over the rest, and add onto that the modaco kernel with compcache and then doing the config tweak found here my phone just flies now.
I now have it set to where I feel a phone at this price point should be to start.

Use the Fresh Kitchen to pull any you don't want.

You know what? I've flashed MoDaCo's ROM before, but it was just too much like stock (except for the obvious speed increases). I flashed Fresh 1.1, and loved it because it had the speed of MoDaCo's, plus the Espresso UI. Then I recently flashed Gumbo Kernel to my phone, and omgwtfzorz my phone is RIDICULOUSLY fast. Not noticeably, but RIDICULOUSLY. I can't believe you've been living with stock for this long >.< Custom ROM's and kernels are necessary for this phone haha.

I went back to stock rom, for now..

The custom roms for some reason do not compare to the speed of the stock rom.
Just update the radio and stay with stock.
Until the evo kernal source gets released.
Otherwise for now, we are using another phone's source, which is for me, slowing everything down.

good for you. ive been with win mo since 2002 and i IMMEDIATELY customize/reg hack those devices as they needed it.. the touch pro2 was the first handset i really didnt need to hack into.. it was built pretty good for me and my lifestyle...
the evo... i see no reason to hack into it at this time. with the way linux manages the RAM and programs under the hood, there is no need in MY case to do anything... it runs just great stock.
so bravo to you sir for going against the grain and staying pretty much stock..

if that makes you happy go for it ! but i have to ask why's it slowing things down for you ? the flipz Dc rom is fast has hell for me any ways

I have to agree.

I use the stock with root rom the only difference is root permissions theres no lag or increased battery drain on my evo

Use odexed damagecontrol rom and set dconfig to equal battery and performance. Tell me that dieabt compare. You can set to battery saver and easily double battery lif too
I think deodexed roms are slower even tho ppl say no they feel it to me

Custom ROMs beat the pants off the stock ROM at everything. Your loss.

I don't know what you're doing wrong but I couldn't agree less. That stock rom is a sloppy bloat-ware filled lag fest.
The source may be for another phone but it's for an identical platform. Sure, there is some slightly different hardware but that's mostly taken care of in the board files so far as I understand it.
Either way, take this anecdotal evidence as you will but I first flashed Fresh 0.2. Things got smoother and snappier. More free memory, longer lasting battery, more responsive interface. Then I tried out various Froyos. All very faster, awesome performance. That 30fps/screenlag problem seems more apparent when the OS is hauling that much ass, but no big deal. I tried froyo with a low-voltage OC kernel and put it up to 1.2ghz min/max with screen on, and 128mhz min/max screen off. The performance was amazing and the battery life was even better than ever. Given my moderate usage pattern I could have easily taken this 'charge daily' phone and made it a 'charge every other day' phone. Bugless Beast was also really fast and relatively battery sipping for me.
I don't know where you are coming from man, but all of the hard work from all of the devs here has had immediate positive impact on every aspect of my Evo experience...sure, there are a couple experimental hacks that make some strange **** happen, but it's usually pretty obvious what those are and why.
Now I just put Fresh 0.3 on last night, the performance is top notch. The battery life seemed to drain rather quickly but I also left the 55fps Nova screen hack on all night to test it out, which I haven't been doing. So today I charged to 100% with the stock kernel, wiped the battery stats and I'm going to see how that works. Worst-case scenario it's something in fresh 0.3 and I'll just continue to bounce between baked desert, fresh 0.2 and BB4.
Either you are doing it wrong or there is actually something hardware-wrong with your phone.

i'm still stock myself but i do have root with unrevoked. i don't have a need to use a custom rom yet and i am definately waiting until froyo 2.2 comes before i do as that will be a game changer... i came from a at&t tilt that had a custom winmo 6.5 rom and the evo blows it out of the water, so i am enjoying my stock evo at the moment...
nothing wrong with flashing though to a different rom, its whatever floats your boat, some people flash as soon as they can, others wait and some never do... choice is great...

But I agree with you, do what works best for you.

Shopping for a new ROM. please advise!

Hey guys and gals. i'm done with BakedSnack. it started out well, but it's gotten so laggy that it's simply not usable. so i'm looking for suggestions for a new rom.
so far i've tried two OMJ's, three BakedSnack, a real early DamageControl and an early Fresh.
basically i'm looking for all the standard hardware(wifi, 4g, cam, etc) to continue functioning. i'd also like decent battery life(a whole day is more then enough) i don't want to lose my 50fps unlock. i'm also looking for something optimized for performance. apps opening and closing smoothly and quickly, screens animating smoothly and most importantly no lag while using swype(that happens now with BS and it's giving my all kinds of strange phrases when i try to type)
can someone suggest some new roms? and yes, i know i could go read through dozens of postings and look at features, but id much rather hear about their behavior in the real world.

Honestly, if Baked Snack is lagging, you might have a different issue. Lag issues are a lot of time related to your kernel. Try flashing Netarchy's latest (not the beta but the stable one...I forget the numbers) and see how that goes. I've tried almost all of the ROMs but haven't found anything as good as BS.

it started out awesome, everything was slick and zippy. now, about three weeks in, it takes nearly 45 seconds to get handcent to open. then when it does open, i have to wait 15-20 seconds for the keyboard to appear. then it takes a bit for the keyboard to get situated cause as soon as i try swipping, the tracer is all over the place :-/
could it be that the kernel didn't flash properly? maybe if i reflash, it'll fix my speed issues?

This is after you reboot the phone every day?

yessir. i had to, just to get a little relief.

Have you tried a simple wipe of your cache or davlick? You will not lose valued info and it will speed up your system.

Laggy yea ok, not sure what your doing but its not on the rom's end . I ran 1.7 for while and it was rock stable no lag no stuttering etc etc
As other roms go try them all see what one fits the needs you have

+1 wipe cache and dalvik and switch to a dif kernel either kings or nets would dobjust fine.

Sounds like a kernel issue to me also. I was running one of his tweaked "best battery" kernels, and started noticing some lag after a while, so I switched to what was the default kernel in 1.5 and the lag disappeared. Also, if you've been running the same bs for a few weeks, then you probably haven't updated recently (like me). Maybe you'll have a better experience with 1.7.

See my sig with all my rom info and scores. Fresh is working lovely for me, and everything works. While some of the processor scores may be lower than what the Evo is capable of, I don't think those scores are bad when you consider I'm running Sense and I have a bunch of apps on my phone that are always hogging up resources (i.e. Facebook and Facebook for Sense, Lookout, eBay, Google Maps, HTC's mail, friendstream, Scoremobile widget, weather channel app, Swype, and a live wallpaper). These scores were achieved with Fresh's 3.1.0.2 rom, and I flashed the 3.2.0.0 which is based on the OTA that has not been released yet, but I lost many features with the new kernel from HTC that saves battery life, so I flashed king's kernel over it until the devs get a chance to play with the new kernel. All my root goodies are fully functional on Fresh 3.2.0.0 with Kings kernel.

Switch to a dif kernel? I had a similar issue w one of kings kernels builginh a crazy amount of dalvik thus slowing down my phone, switched to a dif one and problem solved.

whoops, my bad - see that in the third post. I got thrown off when I saw the comment about it being zippy at first but now you're having trouble 3 weeks in...
Try the wiping and maybe another kernel - say what you will about BS, but Hero does you give you kernel options!

i agree with the wiping before and choosing the proper kernel, also what resource intensive apps are you running? maybe you should post a list of installed programs, atrackdog allows you to export.
lastly, you can't shop without your wallet. *runs off*

I'm having no problems with BakedSnack 1.7 and kernel #5. It is the best Sense ROM, in my opinion.

I tried BS 1.7 on a fresh install today and I was not a personal fan. It would bog down and the camera could not focus for squat. Meh.
I really like evio because it does not resize pictures sent using the standard messaging client, a big bonus imo. Paired with BFS#6 and even though I keep trying other roms, I alwasy nand back to my evio.

How do you manage to get 50 FPS on your evo. i am also running the new fresh rom and i am only getting 30 fps. please advise

hey guys, i just had a thought. when i first installed baked snack i wiped with Clockwork recovery. now i'm reading reports that it may not be clearing the cache's like it's supposed to. could this be a cause??

Ext4 real world results

I have my setup in my sig and I'm happy with it but I'm really curious about the ext4. I've read some posts and some people say it makes their phone faster and some dont notice a whole lot. I'm just wondering if it's worth the hassle for me to do cause I'm on a dk28 extended so first I would have to Odin to the regular dk28. So for those who have done it how is it? If you notice anything where does the phone seem faster at? I just want to get some feedback so I can make my mind up if I even feel like doing it. Thanks and happy new year!

1st you don't have to re odin if you are on the dk28 extended...all you need is to b rooted and have clockwork installed. I definitely noticed a speed boost on midnight rom

The whole procedure takes 5 minutes and my Epic is almost twice as fast!
Web pages load faster,etc,sht everything is faster and the lag is gone!Best mod for Epic,now my samsung feels smooth like htc.

Ran it for a day before I dropped my Epic and ruined it, and I didn't notice this ground shaking fastness everyone is talking about. The phone seemed pretty snappy, but it has always felt that way.

Two words ...No Lag!!

I was wondering about this, too.
On the Moment, everyone was doing an Ext2 mod that was supposed to make the phone fly. It didn't, it just mmade it more unstable and decreased boot time. It did increase the quadrant score, but only because quadrant weighs I/O so heavily.

I would love for someone to make a video comparing the difference between having it and not having it. The differences should be very apparent in a comparison video with the same number of apps installed and everything.

Ya just need to try it,its more stable than tfs and way faster.

Boot time and shut down time are virtually cut in half.
When you do the following w/ RFS > long press home screen > add > shortcut > applications [insert delay here while it builds applist]
doing the same thing w/ EXT4 = no delay to 'build app list'
I'm using spare parts as well and w/ transitions set to fast etc.. it seems as if my phone opens apps, windows, screens, etc. before my finger hits the screen. It's so damn snappy it's unreal.
The members that I've seen that have not noticed improvements such as this have done a restore from a RFS based ROM..
I have not done a data restore at all.. Sucks, but I wanted a fresh install and didn't wanna taint my virgin EXT4 file system w/ RFS herpes LMFAO
Third and final point (for me) is battery life is tremendously improved w/ EXT4 vs RFS in my opinion.. I've been streaming heavily (w/ wifi to be fair) and my battery life is superb.
And if you wind up noticing something different, it only takes a few minutes w/ odin to return to stock and remove the EXT4 stuff.

Restoring the data folder from an RFS based rom? I didn't think that would cause any ill effects, but maybe that is why i didn't notice any major differences.

Well you all talked me into it. I am going to start fresh. I'm going to Odin a fresh dk28 and root it and go from there. Guess I'll put midnight rom on till bonsai gets his done.

Make sure when you flash your rom dont flash it within Clockwork 2.5.5 but boot into clockwork 2.5.5 and go to "advanced" and "reboot clockwork",after you do this it will take you into modded Clockwork 2.5.1.2(something like that".Flash your rom from the modded Clocwork and not the regular one,because flashing your rom from the regular Clockwork will reformat your sht back to rfs.
And after flashing your rom dont forget to flash the Ext4 kernel before you exit Clockwork.

Try it out cause I can tell you the phone feels snappier and just quicker all around! As for the the guy that said his phone is twice as fast I can promise you it is NOT! You do not have to Odin like they said just make sure you have clockwork with redirector installed! It is a quick process and overall you will be happy with the results. I also agree with you that my phone ran very well before I formatted to the new file system. It was smooth and quick but this is an easy mod and like I said you are just going to notice the difference ever so slightly but it is well worth it!

Midnights rom is ual boot so you don't have to odin back to stock. He also has a really simplified way to get ext4 on ur phone in only 3 steps

After you formated to Ext4 anything that you flash(themes,apps,etc..) flash it in the cmw 2.5.1.2(it will say it on the bottom of cmw),only thing that is safe to flash in old cmw(2.5.5) is kernels.

Do u have to flash the ext kernel after a rom change? I've seen conflicting answers?

Since changing to ext4 its generally faster and smoother, not a huge increase but noticiable. When going to add widgets or application shortcuts its way faster, the apps list loads almost instantly and you can scroll to the bottom with no lag or stuttering. Gallery seems much faster then dk28 with rfs too. Apps load faster in general, animations between screens look smoother and it boots quicker. Dungeon Defenders plays a little better, it doesn't chug as much during big battles.

Ok if I do try this and I don't notice a whole lot can I boot into cwm and restore back to my bonsai rom like the way it is now? Would I have to do that thru the new or old cwm? Thanks

Best Epic Rom? (In your opinion)

Hello fellow XDA members. I have become obsessed with flashing Roms lately so I wanted to start this thread to figure out which Rom to flash next for my Epic.
So here is my question, What is the Best Rom in your opinion and why? It can be any Epic rom and for any reason(stable, fast, battery life, etc) The more reasons the better. So answer below and we can have a good discussion of this as well. I am not trying to promote or put down any Roms this is just for my use, and perhaps others that don't know which one to use next. I will probably start a poll soon too.

If you like flashing so much, just try them all, stay with one for a while and keep the one you like the most... not everyone has the same experiences with ROMs and peoples opinions differ. Just try them yourself.

I know that, and I plan to do so. I just figured this would be a good discussion thread, for the general discussion thread.
The opinions of the users matter when it comes to Roms. So I thought it would be nice for a place to compare and contrast what each Roms are missing and what they are bringing to the table.

Personally i like syndicates frozen rom with impalers keyboard patch but then love midnights byor because its empty of bull**** pretty much but find bonsai to be effiecient so its hard to really choose between them all and with the right kernel but right now im running syndicates 1.1.0 with visionkernel 1.4ghz setup

We can't tell you witch is best. They all have there pros and cons. Flash them all to you find what suites your needs.

I was like u once.. got home from work and flashed a new theme and/or rom almost every day. Then I flashed syndicaterom frozen 1.1.0
I haven't flashed a thing in 3+ weeks.. because I haven't had a single issue. Its like this is the rom my phone was built to run

Stock.
It's stable. Battery life is good after removing bloat, freezing DRM, and deleting SNS.

FROZEN 1.1. works for me.. Tried the others, but find this to be the best for me.
Not only is the ROM top notch, but it has the best support out there. Those guys are right on it when someone has a problem, and they show such patience when dealing with the same question for the 1000th time..

SyndicateRom Frozen version 1.0.2.
I run the old version because it seems to run faster, and I have less problems with it. (please don't respond and tell me how I'm wrong and/or how to fix it. I am so incredibly happy with 1.0.2 that I will likely never change to a different froyo rom.)

+1 for ACS. I thought I was happy on Bonsai, then I started seeing more themes for ACS rather than Bonsai so I switched and haven't looked back. Better battery life and easy auto-backup/restore are my main points.
The one con is I'm no longer stable at 100mhz. Hoping a kernal update will fix this soon.

I like ACS syndicate as well and is what I am running.
Also Bonsai 4 is good, use one of those 2.
ACS doesn't have both wired & wireless tether working really, but is supposed to next version.

Its been the most stable, great speed, everything seems smooth, and it back ups data.
I love it!

I'm done with roms...back when I was on stock EB13 with a few modifications, (Ext4, custom kernal, overclocked) my phone was running BEAUTIFULLY. No issues at all whatsoever. Then I got convinced to flash a custom ROM when EC05 dropped. So I did it. I've tried Syndicate, Midnight and Viper and none of which ran as smoothly as my stock phone with a few modifications. Syndicate gave me FC's left and right, all day and all night. I tried wiping and reflashing several times...no dice...
Midnight gave me HORRIBLE battery life and random reboots. When I would press my power key to turn it off, my phone would freeze...then I would get a black screen with my keypad lit and the bottom touch buttons lit...but no option to turn my phone off. It would just vibrate periodically until I did a battery pull. I would then power the phone back up only to be introduced to the Setup Wizard each time and forced to log into my gmail. Again...I tried wipes and reflashing. That helped the setup wizard issue...but not the power down issue or the random reboots.
Viper...battery life was better. But the lag seemed too severe to justify after I had been spoiled on FLAWLESS performance.
So I plan on going back to EC05...completely stock and do my own thing from there. I've had nothing but bad luck on the custom ROM scene. I greatly respect and appreciate everything the devs are doing...but the custom ROMS are just not for me. I depend on my phone too greatly to have these issues reoccuring.

I would have to agree I like syndicate rom frozen. I haven't tied many but I like this one. it's very stable. No force closes or anything .

I have tried syndicate (still have my backup should I want to reflash) it was nice, but I am currently am using red beast and the genocide kernel and my phone is running smoother than I thought possible. syndicate is great, but this rom is great too, and soooo beautiful lol

Nebula has been a great and consistent rom through several releases. I will go back as soon as the ec05 version is ready. Testing out viper rom right now to see what eb13 is like, and thoroughly enjoying it. Pretty zippy and stable but seemed "bulky" with viper mods/addons out of the gate..... some are useful.
