No longer screwed, gettin a new (used) epic :) - Epic 4G General

Ok so today sucked, somewhere between my car and my house my epic disappeared. normally it is never out of my sight and i have never lost a phone so of course my dumb ass doesnt have insurance.
So obviously i start calling it endlessly to try to find it and then it suddenly stopped ringing so i know someone jacked it. im so pissed...
I got it in February so getting an upgrade is not likely but i need to know if there is any loophole as to getting a refurbished epic or nexus?
I'm a broke college student so I cant afford a new phone or afford to keep paying my bill for a phone i dont have
Edit: problem solved by the xda marketplace the first person who offered theirs (with a isht load of batterys/cases)lives less than a hundred miles from here I'm gonna get it when his new phone arrives from ebay.
Thanks to all of you guys for your help and making this loss a lot less hard than it was I really appreciate it. I also signed up for insurance too

www.androidlost.com - good luck. There is a way to install remotely although results are never guaranteed and it won't have full functionality.
Also, if you purchased the Epic via credit card some cards have protection policies within a certain timeframe. Just a thought, I doubt it applies but you never know!

Search for lookout plan B on the market, some people have had success.
Other than that, you're not going to be able to get a refurb.
However, after trying locating, definitely report it stolen. Get that ESN blocked

^ What he said. Try to install Lookout Plan B remotely through the Web market and see if you can track it down.

Go to the Market and log on through the internet, send a security app to the phone and it will install it. Not sure what ones are there now but then you might at least be able to lock the phone so it's useless to the person that has it

It's a 100 dollar replacement that much I know..
[edit] sorry, wasnt specific enough. I have tep and have reported multiple phones stolen and its always 100 dollars for a refurb

thanks guys i really appreciate it but i know the person turned the phone off, and if they think they're smart they pulled the battery so not only do they have a bad esn phone, everything is probably force closing now cause it wasnt journaled. and im sure the remote apps wont install.
Right now i am seriously considering activating another line for 20 bucks a month (i have the everything data share plan)and using that upgrade to get the epic touch. then somewhere down the line cancelling my extra line through a bargain with retensions or something.

I work at a Sprint store. Buy an Evo off someone ASAP (check the Marketplace, but make sure the ESN is clean first!), then add it to your account here: http://www.tepenroll.com/
Sprint is allowing customers who haven't had TEP on their account before to enroll now, until September 30th. After you add it and it's on your account, wait a few days and then file an insurance claim. They'll take your Evo and give you an Evo 3D. 3 customers in my store, including my manager got an Evo 3D back when they sent in their Evos.

However, as cheap as used Sprint phones are on craigslist, I don't see the point.
A word of advice to the OP, do not ever buy a cdma phone on craigslist without forcing the seller to meet you at a sprint store. Give them their money after it is on your account.

if you're desperate
Clean ESN Optimus S $73
clean esn evo $175
Clean ESN Epic $174
Brand new never opened Nexus S (clean ESN) $230
For the short term you could buy an Optimus S off of craigslist for $50~100 at most. My brother has one and loves it. It is a fairly significant step down from the Epic but it still works great.

Last wednesday I cracked the screen on my epic and logged into my sprint account online and saw a message that said there was open enrollment. I chatted with one of the reps on the web and they signed me up for TEP and then right after I issued a claim and received my new phone yesterday for $100. You should try this and then just go back and cancel the TEP or keep it just incase.

I guess nobody saw my post? If you get an Evo 4G and make a TEP claim, you'll get an Evo 3D back. I work at Sprint and I've seen this happen with 3 customers and my manager.

Any tricks to a early upgrade? Mine is in March, the 1st to be exact. My account is premier so technically the March date is already early at 1 year mark. Though is I was to get the $99 EVO they would prob drop support a month after I got it, kind of like the Hero Sorry for the rant

This one I have now is my 4th phone I rooted this one from the gate, as soon as I activated I sat down at the PC and put Fresh 2.4 on it A week later I was on CM6, funny the other day I was doing some PRL and radio stuff and used Fresh 2.4 to do it. I ended up flashing Deca's latest kernel out of curiosity, it gave this rom a new life Might stay with it until GB is ready

RadioShack is now $99 dollars with no trade in as long as you order it online. just a heads up.
Early upgrades? My sister was able to bash the hell out of her Blackberry 8830 or w/e over the phone with Sprint, and they sent her the newest Blackberry model for free and took $15 off our monthly bill for the remainder of our contract.
I tried calling Sprint last night to get my phone swapped with a LG Optimus S, only to be told I would have to use my insurance to get it. I told him all the problems I was having (random rebooting, phone taking too long to connect a call, dust under screen, unresponsive presses to wake it up, freezing), which are apparently a widespread problem with the Hero model. After being told to use my insurance, I told the guy that I bought the insurance in case I damaged the phone, not to get a phone that is not defective. Any tips to getting swapped to a different model? I've heard people getting swapped Evo's
I had a agent tell me a couple months back that with the insurance you can switch phones when making a claim. I dont know if she was just trying to sell me some insurance, or if that is true. Last time I had insurance was with my Instinct, it was a $50 deductible. Funny when I broke my Instinct the deductible had just went up to $100 a week earlier, I was never informed though Long story short sprint paid for it, I had a new Instinct 2 days later.
Yeah I went from one lame azz phone to another lame azz phone, just what I wanted! From a sry Instinct to a sry Hero

Yeah I'm calling Sprint back tonight, and possibly going to have my sister call them. I'm going to keep calling them until I get a different phone >.< What makes me mad though, is the first rep I talked to before getting switched to Multiple Phone Exchange (something like that) told me that she was able to get someone who had a Hero and the same problems as I had switched to a LG Optimus S, a few hours before I called. I had also asked her if I could switch to an Evo and pay the difference of $20, and she said "that's not the way it works"

I worked for radioshack for 3 years. I deeply loathe that place. Please people don't buy your phones at radioshack. Its all they care about and those prices are so low because district managers pressure associates into not selling phones unless you get accessories with it. Don't believe me? Go ahead and try it. I guarantee you the salesman will turn you away not sell you the handset if you don't get something alongside with it.
Bottom line. Get your phones online. I bought both of my epics back in november for 100? If im not mistaken off of letstalk.com. amazon normally has awesome deals too. Save yourself the hassle of being hassled and don't put money into these corporate pigs pockets.

This looks like a good deal! but what are the chances of a new EPIC2 or a better QWERTY smartphone coming out very soon?!
Yes. The guy at my local radio shack was pushing me towards an Evo. Boo! he said there was no other phone in its class. I said what about the epic? And he just kinda scoffed and said it was a decent phone.

It bad. You get harassed and your job threatened everyday. Your NEVER good enough in that place. For those interested or want to work there this is what you will experience.
Radioshack gets angry if you don't sell they're quota of phones a day. If you sell your phone by itself they get angry. I you sell a phone with accessories (and they have a minimum like 20-40 bucks), cool. Now did you get the warranty? No? Your not good enough. Here's a write up. I remember when the i4 came out and they said it was mandatory to sell the 70$ applecare with it. Lol. Oh and don't forget about the plethora of other **** you gotta do there besides earn commission selling cell phones. Which is essentially the only real way to make money there.

jeez, I've never had an issue buying a phone at radio shack. I've never bought accessories there and they just seemed happy I was getting a phone.
Lovely.. i'm within 30 days.. now I get to see if i can get best buy to price match/guarantee, or return it (stupid restocking fee) and get it for $100 cheaper.. if it was $20-40 difference I wouldn't bother, but $100.. that's worth some time to get my money back.

Ripped of by Sprint. Beware anyone I beg you.

I love Sprint, NOT!!! I cancel service because it used to work at my house then quit. I go a month without it so I port my numbers and they will not do anything on cancellation fees. I had them submit a Adjustment waiver form and they came back of course saying they are valid cancellation fees. Why should I pay you anything? You can't keep up with your end of the bargain but you want me to keep up with mine. I also should make sure to state I had full service in my house when I signed up and 2 months later nothing. No construction done nothing. Just a big screw you from Sprint. Thanks guys really appreciate it.
Not to mention it was not a building issue. It was outside everything. I wasn't even asking to remove all cancellation fees. I figured 50% would be fair.
Caution to anyone avoid them they are crooked.

I just need clarity on this ive never wanted to do this before
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I strongly recommend reading your contract, because selling your phone (without putting a new phone on your contract to take the service of your old phone) may be seen as abandoning your service. If you abandon your service, then the provider may consider that an early termination. That is what happened to me when I was with Verizon and got rid of my phone before having a replacement phone added to my account.
A contract is a contract. Getting rid of your phone does not change that.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
If you break your contract, you will be charged $200.00 for disconnect, then another $200.00 for early termination, plus a bad credit mark.If you replace it with another phone, your good.

If he wants to cancel his contract he would only have to pay the eft fee last I checked and the remaining bill he has. I recently did that
Also if you sell the phone and don't pay your bill etc, the new buyer will be screwed. The esn will be blacklisted. So pay your etf and sell the phone.

if you just sell it, then the person who buys it is screwed cuz the ESN will be locked, then you'd have to pay a fee, or you could just stop paying and say screw them, go to verizon and get a new plan, just can never go back to Sprint. Believe it or not, Sprint does not actually go on your credit

3. My friend is a manager for sprint so i would get his discount on my bill and i would not ever have a contract.
Have your friend waive your ETF fee. Are your parents phones on the same plan? If so don't force roam or you may have their lines cancelled as well. The only phone out right now that is reasonably worth going thru the hassle to get rid of your contract for is the sgs2 and its not that GREAT, yet its still lacking in the development area, and has issues with calls if you don't flash the updated radios. The MOTO Photon is a pain with its jacked up bootloader encryption, last I checked fully unldocking it broke 4g and temp rooting caused the phone resource to freeze up and FC randomly, and the 3vo well the 3vo is a holographic headache. Anything I did in 3d on it gave me a splitting headache, same with my dad. He had/has all 3 phones he ditched the 3vo for the Photon got stuck with the Photon then added another line just to get the SGS2 to get rid of the photon. Hope that helps. Hopefully Sprint will drop something better around the holidays or early next year when my upgrade is ready.

Pay etf or whatever and cancel your account. Sell phone on eBay with good esn and reimburse yourself with the money from the phone. Everyone wins.

See if you can assume the payment from your parents/turn it into your own single-line account. I wouldn't do anything to goof your credit or your parents at this point; easy to screw up, tough to repair. The Evo still rocks, I've stopped having gadget lust (mostly) since getting mine 9 months ago. Learn to root it and it can be like a new phone whenever you want

OP,
If you are getting the phone in your name, why not do a change of financial responsibility?
If you are wanting another phone, you need to either fulfill the contract, pay full price for the new phone, or call Sprint and ask what the ETF is.
See, I am in a situation where I "want" another phone to replace my EVO. I am simply tired of replacing the EVO. My upgrade isn't until March or April 2012 (different departments tell me different things). Anyway, my ETF is only $60 at the moment. "If" there was a must have replacement, I could call Sprint to cancel this line and pay the ETF. This will allow me to sell my EVO with a clear ESN. I could then add a line to my account, get new user pricing, but loose my current phone number (a Sprint Retention Employee suggested this option).
Or, I could pay the ETF and get a phone like the Droid Razr or Galaxy Nexus when it launches (soon?)

Sprint requires your phone to be sent back in

So today, I was getting everything straight so we could transfer our number to AT&T. The reason we are switching is bcause Sprint has NO service at my house. I had talked to several reps from Sprint, all of which said that the Early Termination Fee would be waived since we did not have coverage. Well, today I found out that even having been told the ETF would be waived, me and my mother would be required to send our phones into Sprint or we would be charged. WTF?! They are going to charge us if we don't send back phones that WE payed for? One of them over a year ago! I think this is BS. I will fight it as long as I can. What do I need to tell them? I wasn't told this the first times I was told the ETF would be waived.. so I may go on that. Way to go Sprint though, piss u off even as were leaving.

Part of the contract deal is they "absorb" the difference of retail vs. the 2 or 1 year contract phone price. They should technically offer you a proration of that difference for each phone based on the remaining contract time.

Just call & ***** for one week. Hears how I got out of cantract last march (becuz of bs gps on froyo & 2.1) I called & *****ed *****ed some more an other day. Then one day I woke up with a hang over in a bad ass mood. I called them & told them I had nothing to do that day & it was raining out. And proceeded to tell them that if they did NOT resolve my problem on this call I would continue to waste there time & call them all day therefore over hours of them paying customer service to listen to my *****ing insted of them helping other customers which would equal more than my early termination fee. Rofl & it works on there 3rd call. Now I did not leave sprint I only wanted off contract cuz the way I see it sprint had there dam name printed on a phone that said it had gps & it did not work & the only reason I was on contract was because they subsidized the price of the phones. A phone with a defective piece of **** gps until gingerbread and custom rom over a year later.
So you could find some thing you don't like about the phone (a software bug) and focus on that. Maybe the sound on the camera in gb there no mute?
If you know how to ***** then you WILL get your way.

My phone cost over $600 to buy outright when I got it but I only paid $199 and signed a two year contract. So I'm sure someone feels that if I don't complete the contract they ought to get something back. Just sayin...
ETF is one thing to get out of, but part of the contract was that they would give you an expensive phone for cheap if you stay with them. You are leaving so they want their phone back. I say THEIR phone because the you are actually paying for the phone over the time of the contract's length.
Also, why did you wait so long to cancel when you had no coverage at your house? Didnt you check coverage BEFORE signing up with them? After all, it IS a lot of phone and you are getting into a legal contract.
Or... You could work them for a free Airave. Same thing here our house is a deadzone. The thing works great and I npw have full signal at home.
I'm also with sprint on this one. The entire point of the ETF is is to absorb the cost you caused them to incur when giving you the subsidy. Returning the phone seems like the right and reasonable thing to do if you they are going to waive the fee. Our phones are basically minicomputers now and are not cheap to us or the carriers.
OP, were you aware you had no service within the trial period? How about the airave?

Purchased my Epic on Ebay, best purchase I ever made for $200.

Alright sorry I just got back to service. Where we live, there is no high speed internet, so the Airave is out, we actually have one, but no internet. Second, we just moved. We have been wth sprint for 8 1/2 years. Where we moved to doesn't have service. And for the last poster, I bought my Epic off of Craigslist, part of what upsets me about hving to send it in.

If you bought it off of Craigslist they have absolutely no right to it politely tell them to die in a fire. As for the Airave you will probably have to send it back unless you were crazy enough to pay them for it (got mine for free) find a sprint retail store or ups it (ground is 5-7bucks most anywhere in the states).
I didn't see all that much about what other phones you have, but the ones bought from sprint at a reduced cost are subject to the etf.. Now if its been bought from eBay/Craigslist/ect. ect. I can only suggest you tell them to die in a fire, if that don't work give the folks at the executive customer service dept. a call 703-433-4401 (Consumerist)

Yeah ill send the Airave in, they are sending a return kit for it. The other Epic was bought less than 6 months ago with the upgrade so ill probably just send it in. At&t would give us $85 for it which would cover the cost of the Captivate Glide which is what she got, but oh well I guess.

I was gonna say you could always sell it and you might make a buck or two off it after the ETF, but then I remembered that they increased the ETF's not too long ago.
If you were lucky enough to get it before the increase you could pay the ETF and sell it on eBay/Craigslist or here on xda & still come out ahead .

this whole debacle sounds like a mix up and either the op or sprint is very confused. sprint DOES NOT require you to send in the hard ware if they cancel the etf. who even told you this op? they cant even do anything with the phone besides use it for parts or refurb it. 1 or 2 hundred dollars is less than a drop in the bucket when your last earnings report said you were down 5 bil. (im looking at you sprint)
i think they just want you to send back the airave.
