Is that just for the device or do you have to have a contract?
probably a contract, new signed 2 year, which is what sprint is offering on them i think? cause im trying to talk my mom into getting one... ive almost got her switched from AT&T...
if thats the device, no contract... im going to rob a kid on the street, outside of a bank, for that hundo, and have me an EVO lol...
not getting my hopes up lol

Im quite sure its with contract. You can't get a hero for $100 off contract, let alone an Evo.

Got two when they 1st came out...sold one to my sister and the other one on Ebay for 700 dollars...
then went back to the hero..
but I think it's the time to switch, the hero is starting to become an old brick...
We'll be seeing new phones next year. Other than HTC Shift. Hopefully will have Gingerbread installed and dual-core. Slightly smaller screen, like HTC Incredible. That's my hopes.... plus my anniversary not till Feb anyway, so I need to wait....

Any tricks to a early upgrade? Mine is in March, the 1st to be exact. My account is premier so technically the March date is already early at 1 year mark. Though is I was to get the $99 EVO they would prob drop support a month after I got it, kind of like the Hero Sorry for the rant

You could be a douche and threaten to cancel your contract and bash the hero and make up make believe problems some reps it might work some it might not. I use to work for t-mobile for 2 years if we got tired of hearing a person ***** we would just give them an upgrade early all the time lol.

And the way the radio shack deal works is if you trade them your hero its 99 and no trade its 199. Best buy its 199 hero trade gets you 40 bucks if no water damage. Sprint its 250 w/ 50 dollar mail in rebate. I was more than happy to hand them my hero

LOL, I wouldnt be lying if I complained about the Hero! This one I have now is my 4th phone I rooted this one from the gate, as soon as I activated I sat down at the PC and put Fresh 2.4 on it A week later I was on CM6, funny the other day I was doing some PRL and radio stuff and used Fresh 2.4 to do it. I ended up flashing Deca's latest kernel out of curiosity, it gave this rom a new life Might stay with it until GB is ready

I might have to give that a try. It always seemed to have more lag than others at the end. Maybe a new kernal is all it needs to be great again.

I have it overclocked to 748, it runs pretty smooth. I dont use a task killer but have autokiller set to aggressive. I also removed stuff like twitter and facebook, they dont get things pushed like email, b ut rather check for updates all the time, eating my battery! lol On day 3 with Fresh 2.4 and no complaints, so far
RadioShack is now $99 dollars with no trade in as long as you order it online. just a heads up.
Early upgrades? My sister was able to bash the hell out of her Blackberry 8830 or w/e over the phone with Sprint, and they sent her the newest Blackberry model for free and took $15 off our monthly bill for the remainder of our contract.
I tried calling Sprint last night to get my phone swapped with a LG Optimus S, only to be told I would have to use my insurance to get it. I told him all the problems I was having (random rebooting, phone taking too long to connect a call, dust under screen, unresponsive presses to wake it up, freezing), which are apparently a widespread problem with the Hero model. After being told to use my insurance, I told the guy that I bought the insurance in case I damaged the phone, not to get a phone that is not defective. Any tips to getting swapped to a different model? I've heard people getting swapped Evo's
I had a agent tell me a couple months back that with the insurance you can switch phones when making a claim. I dont know if she was just trying to sell me some insurance, or if that is true. Last time I had insurance was with my Instinct, it was a $50 deductible. Funny when I broke my Instinct the deductible had just went up to $100 a week earlier, I was never informed though Long story short sprint paid for it, I had a new Instinct 2 days later.
Yeah I went from one lame azz phone to another lame azz phone, just what I wanted! From a sry Instinct to a sry Hero

Yeah I'm calling Sprint back tonight, and possibly going to have my sister call them. I'm going to keep calling them until I get a different phone >.< What makes me mad though, is the first rep I talked to before getting switched to Multiple Phone Exchange (something like that) told me that she was able to get someone who had a Hero and the same problems as I had switched to a LG Optimus S, a few hours before I called. I had also asked her if I could switch to an Evo and pay the difference of $20, and she said "that's not the way it works"
I am looking for a cheap Hero to replace my wife's flip phone, so if any of you upgraders want to get rid of your's let me know.

I have the Hero and like everyone else here am drooling over the Evo. Can't upgrade till October though, but it didn't hurt to ask for a little exception from the CEO himself.
Here's a link to my story of trying to upgrade early:

EDIT: Bottom line, if you're not eligible for upgrade, you're not getting an upgrade price. No exceptions. But, they're willing to buy your phone back for about $80 if it's a Hero.

Or you could sell it on eBay for $200 buy-it-now and purchase the Evo retail ($450-200 = $250)
Not much more than a new contract price!

... interesting...
I hadn't even thought of that. Although I seriously doubt anyone would pay $200 for a used hero but if so mine is still pristine.
Thanks for the suggestion.
I'm not up for an upgrade till February so for the time being i love my hero and have no complaints except one. Why if ur making a phone would u put only a few hundred mb internal memory on it. I mean i can buy a flash drive for 5 or 10 bucks and it be 4 to 8 gigs. Kinda retarded if u ask me. That and keyboard lag.
Back on subject...if I really wanted to go to evo I'm sure I could call sprint and convince them. I've been with them for 13 years and it's always worked in the past if u threaten to go to metro pcs. I'm sure my account has some interesting notes in it cause I always get my way. Ill debate them until they get tired of me. Morons lmao

I've read various users on here selling their's for $200 BIN, although this was probably a little less than a month ago. With the ever-looming release of the Evo, this may have gone down..Although I wouldn't assume you would get any less than $150, especially since Best Buy is offering $211 (Last I checked) store credit for it.
Personally, I love my Hero. Running Fresh Toast, I benchmark only 1 mflop less than an N1 with 2.1...Perfectly acceptable to me. I'll pass on the Evo and see what comes after

I had a similiar issue about moving the upgrade date up, but I was only asking for a month. It took 3 calls and me talking to a supervisor to get them to give me the early upgrade. I think it helped that I was only 5 months away from being with them for 10 years. Either way, it was a real big hassle and we almost told them to stick it......But I held me ground and we did get the ealry upgrade. Ended up betting 2 heros for $99

Yes!! Dual-Core 1.5GHz Snapdragon phones!!! I may just hold out for these. Supposedly the first ones are due out by the end of this year. Contract upgrade time baby!
So sad that I am second guessing the EVO now. I love Top Of The Line stuff, but sadly with cell phones they get snuffed out quickly.
I think my problem is too many addicitions to spread my money around on. I need to get off the Coke and Meth....i've said too much.
Yes, from what I have been told they cannot give early upgrades but they can do other things. If anything, call them and tell them that if you can’t get an EVO you will terminate your contract and pay the fee. They’ll try to keep you with other options. I did this when the Hero came out and they gave me $20/mo off our plan for the next 24 months. Not too shabby. I don’t even feel bad because Sprint will rape you if you let them.
As far as the EVO, I’m waiting until Xmas to see what HTC releases. I would hate to get the EVO, only to find out that HTC rushed it so it could be the first 4G phone and releases one way better in December or the first quarter of 2011.

Man, I have gotten what I want out of Sprint every time I've tried (but I don't think I've ever asked for something unreasonable ) EXCEPT the time I tried to get my upgrade ONE DAY EARLY. Best Buy was doing a crazy sale and I spent 40 minutes outside outside the store on the phone with Sprint to no avail. Luckily the manager at BB was willing to honor the sale the following day and I ended up getting an unheard of deal on 2 hero's and a blackberry curve
i called in right before they released 2.1 and told them i was canceling becasue of the problems with 1.5(lmao) if they didnt reset my upgrade date and they did on the spot no problem

Simple as that? Wish i could talk to the people you did.
I heard today from a guy at Radio Shack that i can bring in any working cell phone and get the Evo for $99. He said it was for upgrades and new accounts.
I was told the same thing but I was told it was only if you participate in their trade in program.

This is exactly how it works. Any qualified 2 year upgrade + renewal or new 2 year activation (qualifying rate plan at least 69.99. And trade in any working cell phone gets you an evo for 99 bucks.
if nothing else, you could buy a 10 dollar unactivated prepaid and trade it in if you didnt have an old phone laying around.
Just added 2 new lines to my account last week and got them both for $99.00 a piece.
I bought both my Evo's for 99.99 each on Radio Shack online. Called Sprint and they waived my activation fees and I even got a 18% discount from my employeer. No rebate or hassle. Didn't need to turn anything in or nothing.

Is this something that they're advertising or do you have to call the store ahead of time? I ask because I was in a Radio Shack late yesterday, about to get one for an Xmas gift, and the associate never mentioned anything about this.
I'm going back if someone can help with details how they did this. My daughter wants a white one, I've got a couple old phones laying around and this would be a great savings!
Thanks!!!

Just got home from Radio Shack - got the phone for $99. As long as you bring in a phone that will boot up, they'll give you the $100 off. They also give you a Plantronics Explorer 240 bluetooth headset for free ($40 value).
Checked the OS version and it's showing 2.2.
Thanks for posting, just grabbed one for the wife for $99.........now she can leave mine alone. lol
I just bought one from Sprint Saturday... AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Sprint wouldn't match so I'd have to cancel and reopen my account with Radioshack. Yuck, right after I rooted too! I called up Radioshack and the second time they told me my clamshell would get a lesser discount, not the full $100. Why they didn't mention that the first time I don't know. Gah... at least I got a student discount and the activation waived. C'est la vie

Nexus S... here I come.
Really a Nexus S? My dad just returned his second one and got a mytouch4G.

Maybe if I didn't have a G2 I would consider the MT4G... But since I already have what I consider the best T-Mobile phone for my personal use, I can get the Nexus S solely to be on the bleeding edge of google updates and not bother rooting it or anything.
True. Just a heads up my dad has a loud car and the noise canceling would cause some weird issues. When he was driving the person on the other line would hear my dad with an echo, muffled, or choppy. In the loud car it was choppy, in all other cars it was echoy and muffled. This was on both phones.

The Nexus S isn't of interest to me. The G2/DZ is a lot better give or take a few tiny things that I don't really care about much.
I'd probably purchase whatever phone gets the best price on eBay and sell it for profit.

Second this. CES is less than a month away and there's sure to be some new phone announcements there - I'd give it a few weeks and see what happens - might be nothing, but it'd suck to get the Nexus S and then something cooler come out in February.

That's sooo not cool! I had the opposite thing happen.
I returned my wife's G2 from Radio Shack after having called before and from Radio Shack to see if I would then be able to get the $100 from Costco and they said yes. The upgrade never got removed, They even said that 3rd party upgrades sometimes NEVER get removed. I wrote a letter to corporate and everything and it took 10 days to get the matter resolved and a G2 for $100.
You're sooo lucky!
I have the plan with NO chance of an upgrade But considerably cheaper every month. Had to get the G2 with the monthly no interest payments on the account. My school offers at 15% discount on the full plan with upgrades, but even with that I'd be paying more.
What I hate is that they put a gun to your head to get a data plan with an android phone! My house gets horrible data coverage, and she doesn't have much use for it anyways. When she does, I just tether to her. So I really hate that. She's stuck on a G1, I'm trying to get her a My Touch Slide.
Though when the rep asked "how necessary is an android device?" "mandatory"
I used 2 work at radioshack... when district (or whoever audits their t-mobile transactions) finds out that that employee didn't qualify the upgrade that store is going to get hit with the difference idk $200-400 loss bahahahha!

You *do* realize that's not RadioShack's policy, but the carrier's, right? In fact, all 4 major carriers now *require* a data plan with any smartphone. It's not even an option to the salesperson - the system detects the IMEI and automatically adds the data plan along the way.

It's a well known secret but now that it was put on blast on the main EVO 4G board, better call them quick before they remove the offer.
I can personally confirm I called that number (It's posted on a topic in the 3D EVO board) and they reset my upgrades for the full amount on both my lines. I became a Sprint member a few weeks after the EVOs launch. Just ask nicely. Don't be a douche. I gave them the line "I was expecting an full upgrade for my primarly line" The rep said she can definitely help with that and even offered to reset my girlfriend's line as well.
So in summary:
Full upgrades reset by said number
Preorder EVO 3D at Target mobile ($50 deposit)
Trade EVO 4G at Target mobile for $150
Get EVO 3D for $50 (Which was already paid with the preorder)
See you suckers on launch day. You snooze you lose.
Read the WIKI at that link for more Q&A stuff...but you guys can easily sell your EVOs for $200 - $300 on craigslist!

Got a request sent in.. the girl said it takes up to 24 hours to see if I got it. Did anyone else get told that
Sent from my Evo using XDA app.
Ok so today sucked, somewhere between my car and my house my epic disappeared. normally it is never out of my sight and i have never lost a phone so of course my dumb ass doesnt have insurance.
So obviously i start calling it endlessly to try to find it and then it suddenly stopped ringing so i know someone jacked it. im so pissed...
I got it in February so getting an upgrade is not likely but i need to know if there is any loophole as to getting a refurbished epic or nexus?
I'm a broke college student so I cant afford a new phone or afford to keep paying my bill for a phone i dont have
Edit: problem solved by the xda marketplace the first person who offered theirs (with a isht load of batterys/cases)lives less than a hundred miles from here I'm gonna get it when his new phone arrives from ebay.
Thanks to all of you guys for your help and making this loss a lot less hard than it was I really appreciate it. I also signed up for insurance too
www.androidlost.com - good luck. There is a way to install remotely although results are never guaranteed and it won't have full functionality.
Also, if you purchased the Epic via credit card some cards have protection policies within a certain timeframe. Just a thought, I doubt it applies but you never know!
Search for lookout plan B on the market, some people have had success.
Other than that, you're not going to be able to get a refurb.
However, after trying locating, definitely report it stolen. Get that ESN blocked

^ What he said. Try to install Lookout Plan B remotely through the Web market and see if you can track it down.

Go to the Market and log on through the internet, send a security app to the phone and it will install it. Not sure what ones are there now but then you might at least be able to lock the phone so it's useless to the person that has it
It's a 100 dollar replacement that much I know..
[edit] sorry, wasnt specific enough. I have tep and have reported multiple phones stolen and its always 100 dollars for a refurb
thanks guys i really appreciate it but i know the person turned the phone off, and if they think they're smart they pulled the battery so not only do they have a bad esn phone, everything is probably force closing now cause it wasnt journaled. and im sure the remote apps wont install.
Right now i am seriously considering activating another line for 20 bucks a month (i have the everything data share plan)and using that upgrade to get the epic touch. then somewhere down the line cancelling my extra line through a bargain with retensions or something.

I work at a Sprint store. Buy an Evo off someone ASAP (check the Marketplace, but make sure the ESN is clean first!), then add it to your account here: http://www.tepenroll.com/
Sprint is allowing customers who haven't had TEP on their account before to enroll now, until September 30th. After you add it and it's on your account, wait a few days and then file an insurance claim. They'll take your Evo and give you an Evo 3D. 3 customers in my store, including my manager got an Evo 3D back when they sent in their Evos.

with insurance
However, as cheap as used Sprint phones are on craigslist, I don't see the point.
A word of advice to the OP, do not ever buy a cdma phone on craigslist without forcing the seller to meet you at a sprint store. Give them their money after it is on your account.

if you're desperate
Clean ESN Optimus S $73
clean esn evo $175
Clean ESN Epic $174
Brand new never opened Nexus S (clean ESN) $230
For the short term you could buy an Optimus S off of craigslist for $50~100 at most. My brother has one and loves it. It is a fairly significant step down from the Epic but it still works great.

Last wednesday I cracked the screen on my epic and logged into my sprint account online and saw a message that said there was open enrollment. I chatted with one of the reps on the web and they signed me up for TEP and then right after I issued a claim and received my new phone yesterday for $100. You should try this and then just go back and cancel the TEP or keep it just incase.
I guess nobody saw my post? If you get an Evo 4G and make a TEP claim, you'll get an Evo 3D back. I work at Sprint and I've seen this happen with 3 customers and my manager.

I saw it but no offense ill take an epic over an evo 3d any day of the week, the combination of the vibrant colors, the keyboard, and the community are worth more to me than the dual core cpu.
