Kernel location - Nexus S General

I was wondering if some kind person could tell me how to get to where the kernel is located using root explorer and what the exact name of the kernel is,or are there more than 1 files that make up the kernel .I would really appreciate it,thanks

Its made up of many files none of which will give you the name. The closest you will get is settings/about phone.

Download the kernel zip and see the files that are in there.
By the way, don't post the questions in the Development section, there is s Q&A section.

What brainmaster meant to say was post in q&a forum instead of general

So, technically the kernel file name is going to be zimage - and depending on your kernel build you may have one or more modules that will be loaded (at the very least you will have the bcm4329 module for wifi).
However, you won't find zImage within the filesystem - it's contained within the boot.img and written to the boot partition.
The modules will be present usually in /system/modules - but this can change depending on your ROM if someone really wants to change it and update the init scripts.
If you're just curious of the build check about phone under kernel version. However, the is configurable as well at build if desired.

I9100G users Unite!

Introduction
I've had my I9100G for more than a week now and to date there's no hint of anyone working on a custom ROM or mod for it. I guess we'll have to resign ourselves to the fact that it's not really a popular model for the regular devs and if we want to get some mods or custom roms on our phones, we have to do it ourselves. I'm currently working on customising my phone, but since I have a day job and little actual experience in Android, it's going to take some time before I can put anything out. So I'm inviting fellow I9100G users to join me in the effort to get some mods developed for the I9100G.
Kernel
Firstly, the kernel. AFAIK, there are two available kernels so far for the I9100G - KH4 (Android 2.3.4) and KI1 (Android 2.3.5). There are rooted versions for both, but as of now only the KH4 one has CWM recovery. In addition, Samsung has released the source code for the KH4, but I'm yet to find the source code for the KI1. I'l like to develop for the KI1, but without a source code and CWM recovery for the kernel, efforts are limited. So I appeal to anyone who knows where we can get the source code for KI1 or can help get CWM on the KI1, please respond!
Mods
So far I've deodexed my phone running on KI1 and managed to get the battery percentage mod on it using the UOT. That one's pretty simple. This weekend I hope to try some more mods like the Advance Power Menu, for one. Once I get that done, I'll share on xda. Appreciate suggestions on what mod we can apply that's useful, but too complicated. If anyone manage to produce mods for your I9100G, appreciate if you could share.
Hopefully once we have a few mods done for the I9100G, we can consolidate them into a custom ROM for our phone.
Let's work together to make our phone better!
I would like to join with little experience on android .
I understand our target is to make custom Rom for the g model, but do you think its we can make it possible to flash other i9100 custom roms with sgx 540 processor ?
Can we have a list of things to start with to acheive that?
Btw, i tried deodexeding and i didn't success. Any advice on this .
Thanks

Hi ss219100g,
We can't flash I9100 custom ROMs into the I9100G. I tried flashing VillainRom onto mine, but I couldn't make it work. Needs someone with more knowledge and experience, I suppose. All I can try right now is try to apply various modes I pick up from xda onto my phone.
So far I've managed to apply the Battery percentage and Advanced Power Menu mods. I'll share them later today. I'm still looking around for the next thing to try. Any suggestions?
For deodexing, I used xUltimate. The link's here:
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/xeudoxus/47283-release-xultimate.html
Basically, I copied the contents of /system/app and /system/framework to \origi_frame\ and \origi_app\, run the tool, then copied the results back onto the phone. Remember to delete the *.odex files in the phone.
hi, i one of the new sgs2g user.
i would like to join and hoping if we could ever make some custom rom for this version.
but i still noob bout android, and this is my first android phone.
i was able to root my dzki1 kernel, using insecure kernel and abd command, but unable to flash cwm recovery, is there way to flash it?
and other thing, what is deodex and odex? i try google, but could not understand

It's not the one from Odia's thread, is it? I tried that one but it's rooted, but doesn't have CWM.
so meaning to say that until to-date there are no available custom ROM for the GT-I9100G devices??

Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm fairly sure the only issues you have are with te modem that's installed causing degraded data network service. I can test tonight as I have a 8100g laying around atm.

i did and that's normal, you get a yellow triangle because you installed an unofficial (insecure) rom or kernel, don't worry about it, it doesn't affect the stability of your phone in any way, it's just for saying that you have intalled a custom feature (rom or kernel)!

[Q] stuck at gogogo by using any Dorimanx's kernel

hey,guys, i need help...
it's ok with the tytung's Kernel, but the hwa rom is based on Dorimanx's Kernel,i just cant use any Dorimanx’ Kernel or any rom with this kernel, i really dont know why...
anyone know what is the problem?
and thank u so much
I there,
I have the same problem. I think it has something to do with the hwa driver...somehow some hd2 must have hardware diferences between them.
All the other ics roms withou hwa works grate. Hope someone help us
Sent from my Nexus One using xda premium
i hope it is not wrong with my hd2,but the kernel is..
What rom are you using? Do you have any bad blocks? Any version works before ? More details will help like what version of the kernel you are using did you place your from init
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA
all other roms work great. I used before the AOKP 34 and tytung 1.6 ics rom without problems. Since the release of ics with hwa i cant boot. I tryed cm9 and aokp and both cant boot.
Sent from my Nexus One using xda premium
I do have the same problems with kernels higher than 5.7 . I just tried flashing kernel 6.5D but I'm again stuck at GO GO GO...
I use Dorimanx 3.1.6.2, working well with 5.7.
Luke the newer kernel got hwa so the libs changed so you need to wait till tytung updates his tom as for aokp or miui au ics or cm9 you need to put the init.gz in the custom folder and update hope it works

no problem always here to help ( a click on the thanks button will be highly appreciated)
first get your rom extract it
go to the kernel folder and extract the init.rd
download the dorminax kernel also extract it ( PS it has to be higher than 6.6c)
you should see a folder called initrd-Custom and paste the init.rd there and zip all the files use a zip manager ( i use 7-zip)
place the file on sd card and install it through recovery like usual
enjoy it should work

[Q] Kernel builds

Hello all, and befor all, sory for my poor english.
I just want to ask you for some help. I was trying to build my oun kernel for the nexus 7 (ba dum tsss) and want some information about this, since I never compile anithing for android.
I have knowledge about programming, and if I fin something I don't know, learn about it and try, like everyone I assume
I have readed a lot of guides here and there, but I can't find anything specific about how to create a custom kernel, mod voltages, frequencys, and the most important, create a recovery flashable zip.
So, if somebody can point me with some instructions on how to do it, I will be very thankful.
Thx for the help and have a nice day
Download the source and a toolchain in a Linux distro. Unpack the source, and navigate to the folder in Terminal. Type this:
Code:
export ARCH=arm
export CROSS_COMPILE=/path/to/toolchain/bin/arm-xxx-xxx (figure this part on your own)
Edit your defconfig from arch/arm/configs. Then type in
Code:
make xxx_defconfig (where xxx is the name of your defconfig)
make -j# (where # is the number of cores + 1)
This will take some time. Patiently fight out errors, and I'd recommend you start with a vanilla build.
After it's done, grab the zImage from arch/arm/boot/. Grab a flashable kernel that does not use boot.img. Delete the zImage from there and rpaste in your zImage. It should be flashable now.
Let me know if you need more help.
Thx for the info, I have some questions
How or where can I download the kernel source? (Yeah, I want to work with the google vainilla one for the stock rom)
Do you recomend the linaro toolchain or the google original one?
Sory, I work with eclipse and svn repos for years, never work with other programs or source code sistems xD
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
http://source.android.com/source/building-kernels.html
This link's got much more details. Plus if it supports Linaro, go with Linaro toolchain.
Im stuck in the defconfig making part, how can i know the name of my defconfig file?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
If I rember correctly to build the kernel its
make grouper defconfig
But its been a few months since I've touched my source codes
But the defconfig is just the codename of the device your building for (aka WiFi nexus 7 is grouper gsm is tilapia)
Sent from my Nexus 7 @1.60 GHz on Stock 4.2.2
Ok, when I try to run the make grouper command, it say defconfig not found or something like that (sory, I am not om the dev ,achine right now xD).
Apart, any help about adding frequency to cpu steeps and gpu steeps (oc support for 1,7 single core, 1.6 quad and 520 gpu with 1.7 default frequency).
Yeah, I know, it's a lot of information, but I never touch linux kernel on the past, and don't know anything about it some directory info will be great xD
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
All of it is found in the /arch/arm/mach-msm directory. Some files are linked so you'll have to update both. And for the defconfig, navigate to the /arch/arm/configs directory (not in Terminal) and note down the name of the defconfig you want to use. It varies with different kernel sources.
THX for all, I viewthe faux123 kernel source for reference, and found the files I need to edit to allow cpu and gpu oc, and the defconfig for nexus 7 are the tegra3_android_defconfig, strange name jaja
I am installing ubuntu x64 12.04 LTS because of compatibility things over 13.04 Thx for all the info and all the help guys
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Actually for faux kernel it's better to use faux_grouper_defconfig if you want your kernel to have features that faux-kernel has.

Stock Kernel

Can someone point me in the direction of a flashable stock kernel? I can't seem to find one, and i prefer running custom roms, but with the stock kernel.
If I cant find one, does someone mind building one for me from source? I would really appreciate it. If you could build it, and send me the zimage with the libs, I could do the rest.
Also, would packing the boot.img from the stock rom into a flashable zip work on CM, AOKP or other custom roms? I know they change some things that make the stock kernel and components unusable, just curios.
I started to set up a build machine, but my pc does NOT have the resources necessary. I have to run linux on a VM and I only have 2gb of ram. Naturally, that makes things crawl.
Thanks for the help.
Dude... Look on the stickies. Use the search function or Google. Don't be lazy. You are obviously not a complete idiot, so use the resources available to you. This device has been around for awhile so there is a stock kernel here in the forums.

Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Yeah, unfortunately I wasn't clear in what I wanted, or I didn't ask correctly. But I did do a little more research after posting and found what I wanted. Although I had to make it myself, as I couldn't find anything like it.
Most kernels are packaged with the kernel and the ramdisk (boot.img). If you run an aosp Rom, you can use the stock boot.img. if you run a CM Rom, you can run a CM boot.img (modified ramdisk).
Now, I want to run the stock android kernel, on a CM Rom. I couldn't find ANYTHING that has that. They all have CM kernels, or variants of, but no stock, from source kernel. Any kernel reset zips include the stock libs and ramdisk which is incompatible with CM (bootloop).
To solve this, I unpacked the stock boot.img (zImage and ramdisk), put the zImage together with Koush AnyKernel, modified the updater-script for the N7 and boom, it worked.
The reason I can run the stock kernel on a CM Rom, is because I didn't mess with the ramdisk. So I can now run ANY Rom with my stock kernel, because I don't mess with the ramdisk.
Make sense? Sorry I wasn't clear before.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
Makes perfect sense. Although, I believe that most custom kernels, including stock based ones can run almost any ROM including CM especially if you are using multirom . Once I get my N7 fixed tonight I will be able to dive into it and find out exactly what I am using because I have no problem with the 6 or 7 ROMs I have on my device.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Thank you.
You're right, I can run any custom kernel on any Rom, but I could never get a stock kernel zip, to not throw CM into a loop. And all kernel devs, who have kernel reset zips, use a disclaimer saying you can't use on CM based roms. I don't fully understand why
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
I see. I don't get it either. Quite perplexing.

Personally, for the Governor I use Ondemand, I/O to SIO. Use MSM Hotplug (not intelliplug), change Max CPUs boosted to 2, Max CPUs Screen Off to 2. And Undervolt as much as you can, but keep the system stable. Mine can go as low as -100mV for all, but keep [384,270, 162, 81] Mhz at 750mV. For me, when my phone is idle, even with LTE on, it'll only lose 1% per hour.
Your overall battery life will depend on how you use your phone on a daily basis. I'd prefer Greenify to keep apps asleep when they're supposed to be.
My settings may or may not work for you. They're just to guide you, so tinker with what you know and see what works best.

I having problem while using vpn. No internet at all after the vpn connection are turned on.
I'm using AK R3 build on stock AOSP.
I get noticeable display enhancements on cm when I flash "AK.600.MAKO.CM". But however that's not the case when I flash "AK.R3.MAKO.CM" on the same rom or "AK.R3.CM" on any AOSP build. I tried changing the gamma calibration values but still no change.
