It can be a good thing. I imagine this like we can use the USB port to connect mass storage drives.
"Only" thing needed for this is a generic Mass Storage driver from linux. If I'm right, every linux drivers can work with a modification with the Android system.

Funny yet sad

I just think my situation with my phone if quite funny first off my storage doesn't work anymore but charge still does, so if I make any mistakes I have about 2 minutes to odin anything and that's if my phone decides to read on my computer, I've tried many things to fix it nothing worked lol. I'm just grateful we have a awesome dev like jt and nemesis + others won I can't recall but I'm sure they know who they are...yup talking about you big guy up stairs...you keep me up all night and give me time to be on my phone on xda to make a meaningless post such as this with all your noise, lol jk. But yes thanks devs of the fascinate and all who contribute, and swype for putting up with my bad spelling

I would try to reinstall the phone drivers to try and get data going again
A) If you are using a Touchwiz based ROM (COMROM, Evil Fascinate) you will need the Samsung Fascinate driver.
B) If you are using a MTD based ROM (CM7, MIUI, OMFGB) you will need to use the Nexus S drivers.
Failing that a complete uninstall/reinstall of the windows USB stack can sometimes help. m Additionally, judging by your wording it sounds like Odin working is intermittent. That could be the sign of a failing USB cable.
Haven't tried nexus drivers I an on mtd miui

Yup if you are on an mtd rom you need the nexus drivers.

Never updated my drivers. Never had problems connecting my phone to USB. I used USB Mass Storage, ODIN, USB Mass Storage in CWM, etc. Still just using the standard Samsung development drivers that I've always used for Windows 7 for my fascinate.
Thats wonderful for you.
so i installed the nexus drivers and now my usb works thanks alot, but im still a lil confused on how my problem started in com rom 2.1 though lol i guess i will never know

Hard disc

No one did put a hd, a pen drive or a sd card adapter inside the fire?
Sent from my R800i using XDA App
they did - there are a lot of threads about that - but the kf don't have usb-host support - it will not work at the moment ...
But the usb-host is not only software? It's not just make a kernel?
Sent from my R800i using XDA App
can't say for shure - i'm not a dev - but as i understood it's a matter of software (kernel) and the usb port of the kf is not powered
correct me someone if i'm wrong ...

USB Stick?

I was reading the manual, it talks about using the USB port for keyboard, mouse, etc, but not about USB sticks or external HDD. Can the N7 natively detect the USB stick and allow me to access its content? Or do I need a kernel with USB OTG + Terminal Emu command + an adapter?

You should learn how to search. There are few guides on USB OTG.

I have read them. What I don't understand is if this is native or a kernel hack.

Buy an OTG cable, and plug it in. Add peripheral of your choice. There have been hundreds of reports stating that the Nexus 7 does OTG natively. thats what he meant by "Search".

Put OTG in the Forum Search for Nexus Q&A topics and you get 109 threads. Most of them talking about obtaining an OTG cable and using StickMount which itself needs your device to be rooted.
Yes you will need to root and install stickmount before you can use a flash stick or card reader with the nexus. It will work fine with a mouse or keyboard stock but must be rooted for adding more storage.

[Q] Nexus 7 + USB-adapter cable + 3g dongle?

I use an adapter cable for my Nexus 7, so I can plug in various USB stuff (Nexus 7 hosts the stuff).
I am quite happy with that, using keyboards, mice, external USB-drives etc.
My Q's are:
I was wondering a bit about the limits to this support and I guess it comes down to driver support on Android's behalf. I guess the peripherals I mention work on generic drivers/standards etc and is therefore supported as-is by the OS?
And in continuation of that thread: Would it be possible to add support for, say, a USB 3G dongle, would that require a custom driver or what?
Just an idea
You need root and the PPP widget Software from Play store... Cheers

How to use a usb keyboard

To get it working I saw online that you need to get into advance options. Where is advance options? I don't see it.
Sent from my DROID RAZR HD using xda app-developers app
You dont need to set any options at all. Get an otg cable, and plug it in. Thats it and thats all.

Not working for me. I've tried two different ones and I know the otg cable works. I plugged the keyboard in and nothing happens

Different otg cables are made for different devices. Some wont work with the n7. There are absolutely no options you need to set for a usb keyboard to work. None. It is completely automatic. I have used it with stock and many custom roms. No settings needed. None. I would bet that the otg that works with your rzr will not work with the n7.

I used this otg cable on my 8GB nexus 7 with an external sd card. Now I have a 16GB and I'm trying to use the same cable with the keyboard. This is what I saw on Amazon:
I'm just trying to find those settings
Sent from my DROID RAZR HD using xda app-developers app
I dont know how many ways to say that there are no settings for that. Either it works, or it doesnt. There are NO options for it in settings. The ability to use a usb kb is built into the kernel. Are you running stock or custom? 4.1.x or 4.2.x? Which kernel?
Also, the pic you posted is from January. That means that the poster was stating settings from either gingerbread or honeycomb. Alot of those settings are not present, nor needed in jellybean. In short, those settings are not going to be found on an n7, since jellybean is the only android revision it can currently run.

Need USB port waking up app or shortcut.
Hi guys. I have a N7 and I bought http://www.ebay.com/itm/Black-Leath...es_Covers_Keyboard_Folios&hash=item484c513364 .
The keyboard is nice since it's also a case- the only issue that is bothereing me is that after tablet goes to sleep. so does the keayboard since it is powered by my tablet wia micro usb port. But that doesn't bother me. What bothers me is that when I start using the table again I everytime have to unplug the case and plug it back in so that nexus activated the usb port again and starts povering the keayboard. What would make this case perfect would be some kind of app or just a shortcut to put on my homescrean that wouls simulate the unpluging/plugging back in...
This would realy make my nexus7 with the case perfect.
I downloaded a couple of script running apps but don't know anything of calling the USB port and waking it up... and haven't found any scripts to run and test.
Let me know if you know/find something about this...
