I plan to sell my Epic to a friend who travels and spends a lot of time in Europe (the UK) and India. I want to make sure I do everything so the phone works in those places outside the US. I have been reading mixed answers about whether the CDMA technology will work in Europe and India. Could someone with experience and knowledge about this topic comment?

It might work. You'll have to call sprint and ask if they have service there. They'll probably refer you to this other company that sells world phones and ridiculous 2 dollar incoming and 3 dollar outgoing per minute plans. That's what they did for me when I asked about Afghanistan

Most other countries use gsm. That's att biggest advantage over any of these other carriers. So slim possibility for cdma depending on where your going.

I think there is CDMA in India, cuz the old miui dev lives in India and has Airtel and used our epic on that and has since gotten an Evo 3D. IDK about Europe though. If you wanna talk to him, PM ahmgsk

There is plenty of cdma coverage in India. Only Eastern Europe has CDMA. However getting to work is no cakewalk and could permabrick your phone (all sorts of QPST nastiness).
Personally, I would just buy a used Captivate on craigslist for $100, then unlock it yourself and use that with a local carrier. It's less messy (phone wise, GSM only requires you to pop in a sim) and really isn't that much of an expense in the grand scheme of things.

I second this. Also if your friend doesn't need data then find a friend who has a an old tm/att razor they will give him and he is good to go.

Will work in India, not the UK
As noted, there's lots of CDMA in India. I just used my Epic there last month. But the UK is out of the question as there's no CDMA there in the frequency bands that Sprint uses.
All the other options to try and buy GSM phones are not something I can use, as I am trying to sell my friend my phone, an Epic bought and used in the US, so I can move on to another phone and use that money. The question was whether this phone can be used in India and the UK. Some of you said you have used it in India. Did data and everything work? How did you get it to work? I will also pm ahmgsk, the dev in India, but I would appreciate your input, too.

It does not work in europe which is gsm but it does work in india on rcdma provided you know someone who can get the meid registered in their database, I am using it on rcdma.

He or she must not be a very good friend.
Anyone who tries to do what you are describing would be tearing their hair out trying to get their phone to work.
CDMA makes it very difficult and possibly illegal to move phones from carrier to carrier.

Lol I wanna see america or india try to prosecute an american in india using an american phone on indian airwaves
I doubt they would bother to go through all the diplomatic hurdles that entails just to issue a 50million rupee fine which is like a dime lololololololol
But nah seriously, there's only a handful of countries that implement a form of cdma like japan, south korea and india

Either way it's tedious and requires you have an indepth knowledge of QPST.
The legal way requires the Indian Telco to accept your ESN (which they probably won't).
The only other way is either personally knowing someone who works for the telco to add your phone anyway or cloning which is even more tedious and possibly illegal.
With GSM, buy a sim, pop it in, go on with your life.
Yeah but we need ways to sell this phone.
I'm sure op is down fr some qpst time
There's a thread in here to get it flashed to metro, boost blahblahblah so try that out and instead of using mtro or boost parameters, use the indian telco info

I am using it without cloning or anything of that sort, OP you need to PM ahmgsk or someone else who knows what to do, if you PM me can help.

According to a couple of people here the DHD can work for tmo ON 3G in the states if you unlock the sim apparently how much of this is true?
Dhd works on gsm. Any septic supplier on gsm will provide service. Just like any other gsm phone. I sent ny dhd to canada and it worked great with Rogers and telus.

Did 3g work? Or edge?
It never ceases to amaze me how many people ask this question when the information is so easily obtained. In the spirit of you asking a question which has been addressed countless times on XDA forums in general, I will not provide you with an answer but the tools to find them.
Go here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UMTS_frequency_bands
...and match with what you find here:
http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=2598&c=htc_desire_hd_a9191_htc_ace
Hint: btw "UMTS" means 3g freq.
Ya. It worked in Mexico, L.A., and Vancouver. I didn't use it much ad T-Mobile U.K. charges £7.50 per mb downloaded when you're roaming. I used a Mexican sim and a Canadian sim and it all worked. Gsm is normal in Europe. Cmda only seems to be in the states from what I've seen. Sorry sprint hero and evo users, I'de never heard of a phone without a sim abd that's coming from a Canadian across the Atlantic living in London.

ok, i am pretty happy with my x10a but will be travelling to key west florida in about a month. what id like to know is whats the latest android device in the usa with a hard keyboard? ive heard about the droid global but not much. im asking because i am from canada and we are always 6+ months behind cell technology so id like to pickup a new device as good or better than the x10. i do a massive amount of texting which is why im thinking of the hard keyboard option. i am also with rogers canada so i would need advice as to what phones would even be compatible on their network, and obiously be able to sim unlock it.
i look forward to your guys opinion, as im lost on devices outside of canada thanks guys!

The U.S. is 2 years behind. So you are lucky!
You are probably better off getting advice from people in Europe/Asia/Middle East. They get all the good stuff before us is North America.

For 3G, at&t and Rogers use the same band, I think 800/850/1900. T-mobile uses a different band, I think 900/1700. Most European/Asian/Middle Eastern countries use 2100. South America and Australia, use a mix of both depending on the operator.

You could go into a AT&T store while you are here, and get a free "GO" phone which is a monthly prepaid thing for your stay. And get a Google Voice number before you leave.
Leave the X10 connected and set it to forward the calls to the Google Voice (I don't know if Rogers would charge you for this or you would need a US google number or not) and link the Google Voice to your temporary Go phone. Depending on how much you were willing to pay, you could get a free flip phone or pay for anything up to a blackberry.
You would need access at least once to a PC after getting the phone to reconfigure Google to transfer the calls and SMS the phone with the texted version of any voice message.
Even Walmart has these too: http://www.walmart.com/ip/AT-T-Nokia-C3-Prepaid-GoPhone-Blue/15140306
the HTC desire Z seems like a viable option!
To be honest rogers had the x10 before att got it. They aren't that far behind the north American curve, but if you want a good phone, get a bell desire z. Then unlock it. The bell one has a front facing camera and it'll work on rogers. Plus it has the hard fold out keyboard.

If you're planning on using the phone in Europe be careful. Most providers in Europe are gsm which sprint is cdma. Only a couple countries in Europe/middle east operate with cdma towers. Don't quote me but I believe Israel and areas around there use cdma but then again you have know the frequencies also to make sure its the same cdma. Kinda how it is with sprint and Verizon. Cdma but different frequencies. 800,900,1800,1900...etc etc. Correct me if I'm wrong if anyone has any more insite on this topic.

Some countries in South America use different frequencies.
Israel, parts of Korea, parts of Japan, parts of China, parts of India, and some of the small islands in that area use the same CDMA frequencies. There aren't many, really.

I'm pretty sure that Bell owns Telus. I know that Telus uses Bell towers for its signal. Your correct that Rogers owns Fido.
I have Rogers for my cell and Telus for my 3g tab 10.1. I can have no signal on my Rogers phone but have 3 bars on my Tab so they are definitely on different towers.
Telus keeps saying they are going to upgrade the Tab and then pushing the date back.
I think developers had forgotten about Honeycomb on Tablets and I wanted to be back on the main path of Android so I thought I would try rooting.
Now on the CM10 experiment by Pershoot and its great. Exactly the reason I will continue to buy Android products. I don't have to rely on some big stupid corporation, I can go to the great developer community and find all kinds of awesome stuff to run on my devices.

Though I do remember an article 5-6 years back about Rogers buying a portion of Telus. That may have just been an investment by the financial arm of Rogers( diversity is a good thing).

Bell and Telus used to be cdma carriers, when they wanted to launch their hspa network a few years ago they agreed to share the cost by building a network together, hence the "Bellus" term! But.....they are two very separate companies and are going their separate ways with lte.

another reason to believe that Sprint GN2 may not have SIM slot.
We already know that previously Sprint Photon Q (made by Motorola) have SIM internally and unremovable. Now we know that there is another Sprint device Optimus G (made by LG) that will have the exactly similar design as far as SIM slot goes. (source here)
With the previous picture purposely a leak of Sprint GN2 device showing no SIM slot, this is likely to be a Sprint own evil doing.
And BTW I'm one very pissed about this. I 'll definitely sending a snail mail to Sprint Executive Office about how pissed I'm as a consumer regarding turning an international capable device into useless crap once the device come out. I go to Thailand every year or so to visit family member and when I am there I would definitely want to use SIM there because of the local number I can use. With unremovable SIM this is no longer possible. I'm very disappointed.
That's sucks, although I don't go over seas that much.. It would be nice to have. Tell them you Ben kohn bah and your red shirt friends don't approve of this.

It appears that this is the route they are going now. I wonder why that is? Does using the embedded SIM force you to use a Sprint International plan, for out of country use?
pardon my ignorance, but isn't the "international" version GSM...and sprint's, obviously gonna be CDMA? and as such, no SIM card?
---at least i've always assumed that SIM cards is something GSM phones use, while CDMA phones do not.

You're right, but some CDMA phones have radios that support at least EDGE on GSM so you can still text and make phone calls overseas (and if you unlock, you could run them on Tmo and AT&T).
However, the question is if the radios will even support the EDGE GSM bands... probably not though.

---at least i've always assumed that SIM cards is something GSM phones use, while CDMA phones do not.

All of Verizon's LTE phones have a SIM card slot and all of their recent phones also have GSM/HSPA radios for global roaming. I believe some can even run on T-Mobile and ATT's frequencies if you are lucky. But LTE will be Verizon only.
would it be possible to flash a Verizon Note 2 to Sprint in order to have one with a SIM card?
There are so much of competition in market, they skipping features users can easily find alternative. Bad for users but too bad for manufactures. They should understand
Not sure if you saw, but someone has figured out how to remove the embedded SIM in the Photon Q and replace it.

Yea, but whose brave soul gonna do that on not even a month old GN2. And that's beside the point. Seriously, to me it seem like it would cost the manufacturor even more to make the SIM embeded than regular one.

It appears that this is the route they are going now. I wonder why that is? Does using the embedded SIM force you to use a Sprint International plan, for out of country use?

my guess Is That and it decreases fraud. I.e. new accounts created simply to obtain discounted phones that can be used overseas ...then the accounts go bad

I mean how many sprint phones even support GSM EDGE bands?
I don't use Sprint, so I don't know for a fact, but don't their phones usually only run on CDMA (I've only ever heard of Verizon CDMA "world-phones")
I know that the old Touch Pro 2(wm6) and Photon 4G both have dual GSM/CDMA chip in them and they both have SIM slot.
whats the significance in not having a sim card cause it seems like a good thing to me. unless its like tmobile and att network where you can get gsm phones
The significant isn't about whether it have SIM or not. I mean for most people in the US I think we can get by w/o it. I mean it's like once every year or two that people would go outside the country and can make use of it. So it wouldn't be like a final decision whether to get one w/ or w/o SIM. And you are right there are also AT&T and T-mobile. But I can say the for some people it's about the network in their local, while for other it may simply be about not going back to the service they have bad experience with. To me it's about cost, since I'm a Sprint SERO Premium account owner. But very, it's more about why walking the low path? The phone would have been technically capable of it, the chipset, modem, antana support it. This is more about why purposely redesign it to lock it down to a specific network, greed, basically.

Yes, the Sprint HTC Touch Pro 2 most certainly had a SIM card slot. I had a few of them before making the jump to android with my EVO 4G. It was a nice feature to have on a "Business" phone, which is what the TP2 was geared towards. The productivity of the Note 2 also can be geared for Business users, a SIM slot would be of great use.
Ohh okk that makes sense. Cause I never go out of the country so its not that big of a deal for me. But I guess I'd you travel a lot it would be better to have one

Apparently Verizon figured out how to do it properly as they previously have had CDMA, but now allow removable SIM cards for their LTE world-phones. Sprint is now the only provider that locks their phones down like this- it's very frustrating. I am paying for a brand new device that is inherently compatible as a world-phone, but I must buy a separate device to use over seas so that I don't get raped with Sprint's international calling/data plans. RIDICULOUS! These kind of tactics are out of the apple playbook- limit the options of your customers, so you can squeeze em.
