Hey guys, I just bought a new HTC Desire Z for $AUD300 + $20 shipping, it'll be here soon and I'm pretty excited about it. I used a HTC Incredible S for a few days and fell in love with the device and the Android OS and I'm soooo sick of my Nokia E5's lack of apps due to it running the dying (dead) Symbian OS. So I have a few questions for you guys.
Case/screen protector
What's the best case to get? I've heard hard cases can damage the phone, I don't want to spend too much money on it either but generally what is the best cheap case? I've read through the threads on the forum but couldn't find a straight answer .
Also, do I need a screen protector to protect the screen from scratches etc? I've read because it's "Gorilla glass" (Impressive videos on youtube ) it doesn't need a scratch resistant screen protector. This is the case I am looking at getting
ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220683115821
Updates
Recently the Desire Z got updated to 2.3 Gingerbread, how/when do I get that update?(I live in Australia and will be using an Optus sim card, but the phone is unlocked)
Flashing/"Rooting"
What are the benefits of flashing my phone with a custom rom? What's the best rom to flash to? What is rooting?. If I flash my phone with a custom rom can I get it back to stock? (I kinda like HTC sense but others don't)
Over clocking
I've read about over clocking the phone, I know I can easily find guides on how to do it so I won't ask that , but can anyone with experience tell me how it affects performance, battery life etc. I was thinking of over clocking the phone to 1ghz, how much would this boost performance and how much would it drain battery life?.
SD Cards
I had an 8gb (class 4) Kingston micro sd card in my Nokia for about 4 months give or take a few, and it just yesterday died on me, I can't access my data which isn't a big deal because I back up a lot and my data is safe on my pc, but 4 months isn't very long. Has anyone else had this problem? What brand would you guys recommend? I was looking at getting a Sandisk (class 4) 8gb card for $9.95 delivered
ebay.com.au/itm/190358109163?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649
Best case is the Otterbox, little expensive, but you are using a $500 phone after all.
Updates should come automagically if they have been released, but I'm not positive if they will if using a different carrier. If not then somebody here can walk you through flashing the OTA updates manually.
If you have to ask what rooting is you probably shouldn't do it . It grants you Superuser access, basically removing the safeguards on your phone and allowing you to truly f it up. The flipside is you can remove bloatware and have complete control over it. If you are skilled with computers you could give it a shot, but I've seen too many computer noobies brick their phones because they have no idea what they're doing. Don't root just to root, root because you have a clear understanding what you want and NEED to root to do it. Nothing wrong with staying pure stock.
Overclocking can give you mildly better performance. Again you need to be rooted with a rom that supports overclocking.
Sandisk is a good brand, not sure why the other one died...it happens though. Can't predict with electronics.
Even Gorilla Glass scratches. I always use a Body Armor screen protector, but it is up to you.

Thank you for your reply
I have heard about otterbox, they are a bit expensive but I guess you're right, protecting the phone is a good idea. I'm also wondering the real difference between an otterbox case and a 5 dollar clear hard case from ebay?
Yep I knew the updates come OTA, just wondering if it made a difference with my location and carrier.
Okay so rooting, I am a computer nerd tried and true, I've flashed old phones, xbox 360's, jailbroken ipod touches, etc etc, I've been on a computer since I was 5 , so I'm no stranger to stuff like this, just wanted a general explanation of what it is and does. Honestly I'd be too terrified to mess with it for a long time, this is the most amount of money I've ever spent on a phone, I was too scared to jailbreak my itouch for months after buying it hehe. I don't think I'm in any rush to root the phone, I really like stock, and I like HTC sense so no rush , I'm just super excited about getting the phone and want to get as much info as I can before I get it so once I get it I have all that info ready to use.
It'll be the same as over clocking a computer really, and personally I never notice any difference over clocking my graphics card by a bit when playing games etc so I'll probably leave that the way it is (Tho I do like the idea of being able to under clock when the screens locked to save battery, setCPU) So is rooting and flashing a rom the same thing? Sorry I'm just trying to get my head around the whole thing.\
Okay I'm glad Sandisk is fine, I'll buy that card then, can't go wrong for 10 bucks, I guess I just got unlucky with that one, I bought it from a computer swap meet but eh, it happens.
I went the extra mile to get the phone brand new, so I think I should go the extra mile to ensure the device stays safe, how much money would you say I'd be spending for an otterbox and a decent screen protector?
Again, thank you for your reply, I really appreciate it.
You're welcome!
On rooting, now that I know that you have something between your ears I can say that when the times comes, as long as you follow the wiki (on this site or on Cyanogenmod's site) you'll be fine. The biggest advice I can give you is to READ. And then READ AGAIN. Enjoy your phone on stock for a little while, and when the experience starts to get boring, root and flash a custom rom. Don't hesitate to ask questions!!
I'm going to throw a few links at you,
http://www.amazon.com/OtterBox-HTC4...HYI4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1316283693&sr=8-1
http://www.ghost-armor.com/
That is my current setup. Price wise you are looking at $21 for the otterbox and $15 for the screen protector (American Dollars here). I'm sure you could find a better price for a screen protector, though that Amazon price for the otterbox is pretty darn good.
Being overseas, I can't really give you more specifics (Not familiar with pricing/shopping over there). But I can welcome you to our community!
FYI the otterbox should come with a screen protector. They include them as standard.
Also, to expand on the root explanation, its a linux feature that is similar to 'run as administrator' in win7. It allows you full access to the file system. This in turn allows you to do anything from removing pre-installed apps to gaining system access (to flash custom roms).
There are many guides on here for whatever you need and also some extremely helpful people.
Most important thing is to enjoy your new toy

I got a fishebone case for mine vs otterbox, same concept and its held up super well! Its an inner silicone sleeve with hard plastic outside. the tabs are more reliable in my opinion. Also it isn't as slippery so I'm not as likely to drop it, the otterbox is very slippery! Mine was like 10 to 15 on amazon just a little cheaper. As far as screen protectors I go with glossy vs matte, and buy them in 3 or 5 packs, that way it it gets scratched just change er out besides at a few bucks a pack you can't go wrong.

Ahhh so rooting allows you to flash custom roms etc because you're the super user on the phone (Gaining root access on linux). I love reading , I've been reading these forums for a month or so as well as reviews for the phone on other sites etc, I've had a quick look through the wiki (I can't remember which it was) to get a basic idea and stuff, I'll definitely enjoy the phone stock for as long as possible, but me being the nerd I am I just have to tinker with everything . Oh yeah one more question on rooting/flashing, what are the chances of bricking the device? I've been lucky in the past and the only thing I ever bricked was one xbox 360 (Which happened to be mine of course). Thanks for the links, the otterbox here is 30 bucks, I haven't looked around that much besides ebay and the official website. I don't think amazon ships down here . Any good otterbox alternatives?.
Thanks for the welcome .

The fishbone case looks really cool and is much cheaper compared to the otterbox, I like how it looks, have you got anything negative to say about it? Does the keyboard sit flush etc?. And if you could post a link to the one you got?. So I should get glossy screen protectors?, would you say a cheapie brand would be okay or I should go with the more expensive stuff?
I picked up the phone from the post office a few hours ago and I'm loving it, so shiny and new . I upgraded to Gingerbread ota, and have a few apps installed. I was just wondering what you guys thought are some must have apps/games.
Personally, regardless of rooting or not I always install opera mini. Not the mobile version as I find it slower. I also install xda forum app to keep up to date with whatever I need.
Another app that has moved to my tablet but used to be on my phone when that was all I had is pulse news reader. Great for keeping up with any type of interest. UI is great too.

Just a few suggestions. Words with friends, Rocket Bunnies, angry birds, and Radiant HD are the games I always like to have around.
Pulse News reader and the tapatalk forum app are nice. And Beautiful Widgets is just...beautiful. And if you haven't been invited to the google music beta, pm me your
gmail address and I'll throw you an invite. That thing is a godsend.

So I was in a car crash and my N1 and car are goners. Well for my N1 it's only the screen that's cracked (inside, not the outside glass) but it's going to cost me upwards of $290 to get it repaired (I'm out of the states not near any repair centre etc) so that really sucks.
This thread is not to cry about it but looking for a proper replacement.
Like I said I'm out of the states and GSM/UMTS is what I need not CDMA and no contract options are available from carriers here so it's only fully unlocked (or with the potential to be) that will work for me.
I liked Stock Android but positively loved HTC Sense
So I was looking at either
1. Still trying to repair for the price above
2. A vendor here has HTC Desire HD - That would fit the HTC Sense wish but I hear there are battery issues(I've seen 'fixes' but no idea how well they work), the speaker's max volume is sort of low, I'm also worried about how good handsfree operation is (whether the mike works well etc)
3. Nexus S (that will be a few hurdles away to get it shipped to my country) but I'm sad about it being made by Sammy (could it mean no Sense would run on it - just speculation), then I was hoping it would have dual cores (that would be a nice upgrade), amazed it doesn't have 720p video recording in this day and age, sad it doesn't have hdmi out or microsd expansion (in that car crash the fact that I backed my stuff up on the sd card made me realise the importance)
4. Wait for the next decent (HTC?) dual core which could be way out.
Right now I'm using a stupid Blackberry that I absolutely hate. I didn't realise how much I could do with my phone until it was taken away.
So please shoot away and I'm sorry if this is in the wrong forum
MyTouch 4 is your choice.
You can buy replacement screens off ebay, it really isnt that difficult to install one.
I would wait til January if possible. Lots of new stuff coming from HTC.
Maybe a Nokia 3310?
-------------------------------------
Sent via the XDA Tapatalk App with Sexyy Nexyyy
1) Replace the screen later after buying one from ebay.
2) Nexus S.
3) Make do with anything & wait for dual cores to come out.
In the end, only you can answer these!
I did not realise you could get replacement screens on Ebay. With the 'shortages' in amoled. I can certainly do that if it will work. I'll look around for pointers on changing the screen but if someone already has a link handy I'd appreciate it.
I don't think I have anyway of getting a Mytouch 4g to where I live.
And if I can replace the screen then yes I can definitely hold off purchasing another phone till Dual cores are up and about. I did not intend to replace this phone till June/July next year
Thanks for your input everyone.
Edit: I've just browsed ebay rapidly. I see they sell the screen 'without' the digitizer. I'm unsure if I will need one or not. I'm also seeing that amoleds are about $75 and the reference is H78. I'd just like to make sure that I will be buying the right thing =[
Ps: I am SO opening my bootloader after that =\
I would try to wait for the dual cores to come out as its close if you can stand the Blackberry for a few months.
At least that is what I would do.
Ford Fiesta. Car bumped into me while I was at around 35Mph and i went under a MiniVan.
Something else that's putting me off changing phones is I have my Car Dock for my N1 as well as an extra battery. I am amazed at how there's no real dock for Desire/HD or samsungs.
Believe me Lythandra I wish I could wait but I can't even bring myself to put back contact numbers on this BlackBerry. Plus there's so much that can be done on Android. Which reminds me I'll lose my privileged unlimited Tags on Shazam if I change phone
Edit: Does anyone think there'll be a Sense rom with 720p for the Nexus S?
I would buy the phone Google supports the most (just as the Nexus One), so I would go for the Nexus S
One more question. Does the Desire use exactly the same screen and internal connections? Cause this guy from an HTC shop here says they only do HTC's branded as HTC's and that they do repair Desire screens.
I thought this was incredibly stupid
RAZR...nuff said.
If you want Sense UI, then it makes sense (haha) to go for a phone that supports it natively, saves the pain and bugs of trying to get something to run on something it was never designed for. I tried a Sense UI ROM on my N1 when I had it, and it had a few annoying bugs for me, despite otherwise being a fairly decent port.
The Desire for me is a better phone, if you can look beyond noise cancelling and the silly coloured track ball, which is nice, but hardly anything to get that excited about; the desire has a hardware buttons which are much, MUCH nicer to use than those crap soft touch buttons on the N1. Said it all to me how other people really struggled to use the N1 when I let them have a play because the buttons are so unresponsive. Even after several months I had got used to them, but they still irritated.
If you're in the US though, naturally you have many more options available to you... I only know about stuff you can get in the UK.
There is one guy on a forum I visit who recently returned his Desire HD, stating he was really disappointed with the battery life and screen, and saying he would rather have the Desire. Make of that what you will.
if u plan to spend lots of money for a new phone i would wait till dual-core android HTC device.don't fall for the out dated nexus s which justa galaxy s made by "samsung".wait till january for HTC's release of dual-core android beasts.
Well I'm not in the US, I'm on an island in the indian ocean.
Anyways I'm thinking I'll give the repair a try. If that doesn't work (because of a busted digitiser or w/e) then I'll think again.
Btw I love my N1 trackball and got used to the "got to press them a particular way" soft buttons.
I love the trackball because I can set a different colour for different events. Say 1 colour for the gf's text messages, 1 colour for when work is calling. That way at a glance (when the phone's on my desk or not in my pocket) I know what it is. Saddens me they're not keeping that trend.

So like.. The Acer Iconia Tab A500 is a amazing built tablet and all but the little problems that acer has are horrible.. As in sleep wake/off, updates, battery drain by a phone app.. And etc.. Now im thinking about all of this and im thinking do any of you think it would be a good idea to return and wait til the new samsung or toshiba come out? Tomorrow i should be in work and i will be asking my manager if they got a release date on the samsung or toshiba tablet.. Since i work at staples and we should be getting the samsung nd toshiba from what i know.. Now im wondering everybody explain why acer should be kept because from the prices samsung is only a 50$ difference thats not a lot.. So lets hear it? I think the updates and bootloader being locked are my two biggest concerns about this tablet because im a crackflasher on my phone i wanna do the same on my tablet =]
AH! ****.. Somebody please move this to general i thought i was in the general section..
I returned mine today
Loved the tablet bur dreampt of unlocked recovery. I miss it already, hefty tab but so many ports

The will always be "the next best thing" the samsung is nice and thin but lacks ports. The toshiba is a bit of an unknown at the moment, and afaik this is there first step into the android os and cell/mobile market, so even more bugs are likely. I've had 2 Acer android cellphones, and there updates and stability was superb. In a few weeks we will have 3.1 and I'm quite sure most if not all bugs will be fixed. Just look at the bugs the xoom had when it was released...... not even a working sd card. And now there quite happy with there little tablet. The iconia is still brand spankin new, let Acer iron out the bugs....... they will
Yea but the stupid.. Phone and Tele app that eat battery nd mess up updates is freaking retarded.. The toshiba should be coming early june i could return my tablet for a while since i work at the store i bought it from and my manager will take it back so lets see.. Im trying to give Acer a chance since i own a Acer netbook and Computer and both are great.. Never bought a Acer phone but the tablet is built amazingly just what they did with software is horrible..
I was at Best Buy today bringing my A500 for an exchange for another A500 due to the HDMI port was kinda loose, and when touching the cable the pictures/video would go off on the monitor. I'm digging the Acer..
My cousin has an Asus transformer 16gb .... I made fun of him when I pointed out that his Asus didn't have flash, a low resolution front cam ... OH , when I was there, in the same spot where they stock the tablets, I saw at least three or four Motorola XOOM..... all was open box.
IMO .. all I care for is specs...and it seems that majority of the new tablets including the acer has really close in hardware specs, besides cosmetic.
The only thing giving me pause is lack of recovery. I'm used to being able to fix stuff myself. If tis thing goes tits up I have to rely on my retailer to take care of me.
Hmmm...you think anyone from acer is reading this? Love the tablet but hate their support.

You never know on the galaxy s forum a guy named samsung jhon who worked for samsung was responsible for checking out the xda forum, and trying to keep the dev community happy. Of course he was chased out of the forum by all the haters and trolls, but it goes to show this little forum of ours can make a difference if we just keep voicing our discontent about the lack of recovery/locked bootloader.

lmao. So true.
Personally i'm glad the 'issues' are only a little battery drain (still unsubstanciated i might add), the screen popping on for a few seconds maybe once or twice.... what where the other ones? "etc" issues? Yeah, etc issues... whatever those are...
I didn't drop $500 for a toy. I bought a tool and as far as tools go, it meets and exceeds my expectations. Why so many people see fit to hop on and off the train, i think, says more about their personality than the tablet and whatever issues there might be (real or otherwise).
Go ahead, OP, get ride of it. It doesn't want you either. (;

Lol.. The way you put it it sounds horrible.. Lol but no the etc i mean locked bootloader, no recovery, you cant delete specfic apps because if you do and try to restore you get a brick, updates mostly international, and **** like that the acer is built good and i know theres always something new around the corner because i have had android since the g1 days and getting a new phone like every 3 months i know about the new things lmfao so im just thinking on if acer will make it better in the next couple weeks because if they do and they fix everything i would happily stay with acer because right now i dont want to risk anything on the tablet try to do anything because i know theres no way of returning it to stock at the moment if i eff something up i just want that satisfaction that if i **** something up i can fix it myself and not call acer and send it out and have them fix it..
I hear ya.
I don't consider the locked bootloader, personal recovery option and inability to remove pre-installed apps as 'issues'. And, really, it isn't. At least, not for those of us who just use it as it was intended to be used.
Yes, the a500 needs a little tweaking, however it's mostly Honeycomb and all minor. Unlike some tabs that have glaring hardware issues, the a500 leads the pack in quality and consistency. IMO, anyways (; (sure I'm biased but I have played with other tabs)
Don't get me wrong, I see the value in being able to recover on your own (if something goes awry) but in the end, it went that way because of user error (or bad mod, whatever the case may be) and because it was unlocked / rooted - It's no fault of Acer and it shouldn't be held against them or the tablet. Like all other tablet manufacturers, they wouldn't support that even if they did release the key. And in the end, all we'd really get out of it all are more people bricking their tabs, Acer getting screwed over by people lying and returning their tabs - all for the ability to what? Delete or rename a few files? Get back maybe, 100mb on a 16gb tab with microSD and USB?
If some mod came out that flipped HC on it's head and created a user experience that surpasses all others, then, and only then, would I ever consider rooting (ROM hacking etc ((if that ever becomes possible)) Until then, what few and silly 'root req' apps there are and minuscule returns one gets are far too insignificant for me.
But, you know. In the end, it about what you want. If modability is a prerequisite, you probably should have waited. If you take it back, you might want to consider waiting until you know for a fact that all those features are available in the next tablet du-jour.
I get what ur saying.. But heres the thing ive played with the xoom and asus and everything there built great as well just those little features that i wont use like usb support are the only thing missing on those other tablets.. I like root because it can help me get rid of the stuff i dont use and is running the background.. also the custom roms are usually a lot better than what the manufacturs usually release with the hardware.. So idk im gonna wait til the new thing comes out and see what the developers do with it.. Since i only had the tablet for a week nd 2 days.. I have a while to return =]
return it, by the looks of your phone list seems like your indecisive(not trying to be mean) the wake up issue is not a big deal and will get fixed. i get over a days use with heavy use.
if this tab gets regular support will flashing new ROMS really be necessary. i mean on HTC hero chirst that thing needed support there was no way to make it through a two year contract with it.
Now my nexus s theres support on here for it and its great. but out of the box it works just fine

Don't get me wrong but i think switching hardware that often and just flashing ROMs and software made by other people is called consumerism. Ahum. What's the point of switching the device unless you've explored all its hardware, know all electronic details like chips used and gpios/clocks or unless it's just too old to run software you need for work?

So I am on tmobile with my SGS Vibrant and the sensation isn't getting me excited and the thought of waiting until near winter is killing me, and then I stopped and wondered why I didn't just get a tablet in the mean time?
The only thing my vibrant doesn't do that i wish it did was play dungeon defenders, and with 1gig ram and a tegra2 the transformer should play it easy. Plus I just want a tablet and being pretty darn cheap among it's competition without seeming to sacrifice much I just need the slightest push into trying to track one down.
Any downsides to getting a tablet and not upgrading my phone? Any downsides to getting the tranformer instead of waiting a month or paying a little more for something else?
Also I just read the pcmag review and was getting kind of annoyed. They kept saying it wasn't quite an iPad2 and complained about how the keyboard they got was buggy (iPad2 doesn't have that option, hell no one does), and that flash 10.2 is still in beta, but isn't apple pretty far behind in flash on their "mobile" devices?
Sorry, that almost became a rant. So opinions? Any one else who was like me (on the wall about getting a tablet) who took the plunge and now very happy/unhappy about it? I suppose I could order it on Amazon and would have time to return it, but I would like to know what I should be checking for at least so I can see if it bothers me or not.
Thanks for any and all help. I will now go look at the dev section and see if that gets me more excited or not.
I vote go for it! You wont be dissapointed. There are a lot of fun things to do with the tablet vs just a phone. Let your imagination run with this thing.
I was going to get the Galaxy Tab 10.1. But after finding out that it didnt have a microSD card slot that was a deal breaker. I then began to look at other Tablets. Then I found it. It had all the features I wanted and was cheaper than others. It also had an option for a keyboard that almost doubles the battery life. The decision was easy. I got my Transformer yesterday and I am super happy with my decision. Def go for it. Newegg had them in stock last friday at $499 free ship and no tax. I added a class 10 32 gig microSD. Came to like $570. Also tiger direct had the keyboards in stock as of monday. Have fun with your Transformer. Im very happy with mine.
Wow. When I posted this Amazon had stock of the 16gb model (which would be plenty for me), now they don't. Newegg does but there are no returns for refund (just in case).
I guess I will hold off for now since I am moving at the end of the month any way and shouldn't be splurging right now.
I ALMOST bought one earlier but so many people reported a lot of annoyances that I don't think I would get one without the assurance that I can send it back if I need to.
There's going to be annoyances with any device one gets, really. Especially with a first generation device like the TF. I really do suspect that some of the "problems" voiced are those of perception but, on the other hand, there are some bonafide issues that require addressing.
I've been fortunate, mine has been great. Rooted, Prime 1.4 and OC to 1.4. It performs quite well.
Shiznit... Amazon got more in stock, so I put one on my credit card... At least with amazon if I get it and feel stupid for having done so I get 30 days to return it... I think.
Otherwise I will be telling everyone how cool tablets are by wednesday and playing too much dungeon defenders.
However I already know to check for dust and screen bleed. Anything else to be cautious about? I probably won't pull out the magnifier glass or anything but I being a poor college student I don't want to regret my purchase (I will get the dock when school starts more than likely).
sound balance.
Flash is at 10.3 and Apple refuses to even consider it at the moment. The Android 3.1 update came with an update for the keyboard which it prompted me to install when I first connect to mine. No problems. Nothing close to a force close has appeared since I've had mine. Appreciate the product well enough I took some high resolution photos and did a blog post about it.

Does this mean like speaker placement, or speakers not being equal volume, or like imbalance in tones/pitch?
I've seen this a few times and am not quite sure what to not hope for. I guess I will have to pay attention to if the sound in general bothers me, but thanks.
And @4D, thanks, I will check that out. I hate how everyone bumps tech site reviews and makes it some what of a pain to find decent personal reviews (because, you know, I am not a tech site, I am just a person who wants to know what the device will feel like and not compare it to the ipad2)
see my thread "Still the new hotness".. I'm in lurve baby!!
I've had my TF for two weeks now. I have the 32gb with the dock. Bought it overseas in Australia (ended up being cheaper there than the US)! Apart from the fact that our company has complicated templates for MS Word and Excel, the machine is perfect. I've been able to VNC back into my full sized laptop several times, and it's really going to be a desktop replacement for me on the road.
I had an Asus EeePC prior, and loved that, and this is no different. My one annoyance is the right hand shift key, and that there is no keyboard shortcut for recent apps. However, the shift key is just a getting used to thing. As for the recent apps thing, if that's the only other issue, I'm doing pretty well!!!
Don't use up your upgrade right now on a phone. Wait till Christmas time when the nexus 3 will be upon us.

Not on contract at the moment, so I don't get upgrades. Maybe early next year I will go back on contract simple for a new phone (since the prices are getting pretty high on their own)
Hey all, I have to send in my Nook Color to SquareTrade and I'm hoping someone can suggest a similar replacement. I got mine from the B&N ebay store for $130, so I will be getting a check for that amount. I don't mind paying a little more, but I'll have to replace my case and screen protector too.
Nothing too expensive, as my two little ones have dropped the Nook quite a bit (hence the replacement) but something a little rugged would be nice...even if it means getting a ruggedized case. I expect to buy some kind of case and screen protection
Probably something popular enough to be somewhat up to date on CMs, preferably with a bootable sdcard (I'm ok modifying the internal OS if necessary, but would prefer not to) option like the Nook.
I realize that's a lot to ask, but your experiences would be appreciated. I got CM10 working decent on the Nook Color, so features-wise, anything that meets or beats would be good.
Thanks!:cyclops:
P.S. The usual I searched, but couldn't find a similar thread applies here, so if there is one, if you would kindly point me there, I would appreciate it.
Thx
I don't know if you have ever seen this, but the Nubi is a pretty cool thing that has a built in rugged case type thing. Even though it is marketed toward kids, it is a full fledged Android 4.0 tablet.

I should have been a little more clear. I am the primary user, but I have seen this one rated pretty good by Consumer Reports:good:...so-so on Amazon. I might consider it if it were solely for the boys.

Use Swappa. It's now my go to site for trades. This is the lowest price one right now. I got one for 70, with case and SD. My Nook is getting here tomorrow. I would have it today but the weather is bad.

Cool site. I would like something new/refurbished/ebay so I can get a SquareTrade accidental protection warranty though. I'm not ready to spend $100 (the lowest price) on a Nook knowing it will get beat up...although maybe I could give it to my wife. She still has the warranty on hers for the kids...hmmmm. I will have to think this one over.
Thanks!
BTW AgentCherryColla,
Do they have any kind of dispute system like if I buy something from someone and it isn't what is says it is?
Yeah.

I swapped my 7yr old daughter last year from a NC to a refurb Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7" for $145. It's held up pretty well, just like the Nook Color did. My youngest (5 1/2) still has a NC.
It's a good buy if you want an SD card. I didn't want to spend the extra on a Nexus 7 and wanted the SD card for My Little Pony episodes and such.
I haven't replaced the stock ROM because it works well enough as-is (although I dislike Samsung's Touchwiz, my daughter doesn't seem to mind).
I surely have appreciated all the help provided on this forum to load cyanogen mods on a couple SD cards for my NC and make it function as an android tablet. My NC is still as good as new so if anyone is interested in it, let me know by email.
I gave my nc to my 87 yr old mother. It was one of the first models. I put 7.1 and then 7.2 on it. I was using on of the 10 releases but took it back down to 7.2 for her. (Stability) she loves it and uses it daily.

First and foremost: No multiple user support! Until this is provided by either Samsung or by a mod, I'm not buying this tablet. I was hoping to make this a coffee table appliance, and there is no way to achieve that without the multi-user support.
Another thing that kinda annoyed me was the seemingly cheap workmanship on the area where the bezel meets the plastic frame in the front. I held a white one at Best Buy and this annoying look immediately caught my attention. This would have looked much nicer if the bezel did not run over the frame and was instead flush with it. Normally I wouldn't care about this too much, but I know my wife will and ***** about how iPad looks nicer... jeez.....
So why am I posting this? I guess I needed to vent... I had so much high hopes for this device, and now I'm having second thoughts...

Well, you cared enough to reply, so that's something!
I think the Note 2014 is going to be the best there is for android 10 inch tablet (until next year) for what it all offers. The super close runner up will be the New Nexus 10 coming out soon. For many it could go either way between the two. I jsut love all the software extras and the multi tasking of this thing. My god the multitasking!!:victory:
Again the new Nexus 10 is not out yet but ASUS is making it and I'm not too confident in the quality control. But that is just me.

And besides, didn't Google announce that they won't provide external sd-card slots, because they were "too confusing" to the consumer??? Really??? Or is it because they want to charge an extra $100 for 16GB in this day and age? Thanks Google, that's a deal breaker. The moment HTC did that, I switched over to Samsung (also HTC stopped making the battery removable). I hate when Android device makers are trying to act like they are Apple. If I want to buy something like iPhone or iPad, I will buy an iPhone or iPad. So stop taking away things that give you an edge!
I'm afraid that's what Samsung could be trying to do here by removing the multi-user support. They want everyone to buy a tablet. They don't want family members to share. Well, for the phones, it's understandable. But for tablets, there is no reason not to share. I hope Sammy gets its act together on this...

Google's mission was to make the tablet as affordable as possible, it is one of the reasons why they cut out the ext SD card.
Their other excuse was switching over on how they wanted their phones to mount when connected to PC. But Samsung managed to get it working right, so I don't know what their issue was.

As a coffee table device? I wouldn't dish out ~$600 for a tablet I'd be leaving on the coffee table. Why not just get something cheaper? It doesn't sound like you're going to be using the s pen for anything serious anyways and the S Pen is what really makes this device worth the purchase.

Well, I guess I tend to always buy the top tier device and hang on to it for a while (still use my Lenovo T61 I bought in 2007 close to $2K). For now it will be a coffee table device, but for later I may turn it into something more useful. And no one can deny the stunning resolution on that screen.
I currently have Note 2 as my phone and I do use the S Pen quite often.
7just grab a nook hd+. 9inches and under $125.

You could try installing 2014 NOTE 10.1 RETAIL MODE APP.
I believe the way it works is.........
You activate the retail mode with a password and anything that is done in retail mode is erased when you return to normal operation. There is also a video that plays when the tablet has not been touched for a preset time.

Only one catch......... you need the password, who knows it???

Yes, I have seen that on the tablet at BestBuy. There was an "administrators" menu on settings and retail mode user or something close to that name was listed as an admin. But still doesn't achieve the purpose of being able to share the device with my wife without any hassle.
