[Q] Nook color replacement for $129ish? - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all, I have to send in my Nook Color to SquareTrade and I'm hoping someone can suggest a similar replacement. I got mine from the B&N ebay store for $130, so I will be getting a check for that amount. I don't mind paying a little more, but I'll have to replace my case and screen protector too.
Nothing too expensive, as my two little ones have dropped the Nook quite a bit (hence the replacement) but something a little rugged would be nice...even if it means getting a ruggedized case. I expect to buy some kind of case and screen protection
Probably something popular enough to be somewhat up to date on CMs, preferably with a bootable sdcard (I'm ok modifying the internal OS if necessary, but would prefer not to) option like the Nook.
I realize that's a lot to ask, but your experiences would be appreciated. I got CM10 working decent on the Nook Color, so features-wise, anything that meets or beats would be good.
Thanks!:cyclops:
P.S. The usual I searched, but couldn't find a similar thread applies here, so if there is one, if you would kindly point me there, I would appreciate it.
Thx

I don't know if you have ever seen this, but the Nubi is a pretty cool thing that has a built in rugged case type thing. Even though it is marketed toward kids, it is a full fledged Android 4.0 tablet.

I should have been a little more clear. I am the primary user, but I have seen this one rated pretty good by Consumer Reports:good:...so-so on Amazon. I might consider it if it were solely for the boys.

Use Swappa. It's now my go to site for trades. This is the lowest price one right now. I got one for 70, with case and SD. My Nook is getting here tomorrow. I would have it today but the weather is bad.

Cool site. I would like something new/refurbished/ebay so I can get a SquareTrade accidental protection warranty though. I'm not ready to spend $100 (the lowest price) on a Nook knowing it will get beat up...although maybe I could give it to my wife. She still has the warranty on hers for the kids...hmmmm. I will have to think this one over.
Thanks!
BTW AgentCherryColla,
Do they have any kind of dispute system like if I buy something from someone and it isn't what is says it is?

Yeah.

I swapped my 7yr old daughter last year from a NC to a refurb Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7" for $145. It's held up pretty well, just like the Nook Color did. My youngest (5 1/2) still has a NC.
It's a good buy if you want an SD card. I didn't want to spend the extra on a Nexus 7 and wanted the SD card for My Little Pony episodes and such.
I haven't replaced the stock ROM because it works well enough as-is (although I dislike Samsung's Touchwiz, my daughter doesn't seem to mind).

I surely have appreciated all the help provided on this forum to load cyanogen mods on a couple SD cards for my NC and make it function as an android tablet. My NC is still as good as new so if anyone is interested in it, let me know by email.

I gave my nc to my 87 yr old mother. It was one of the first models. I put 7.1 and then 7.2 on it. I was using on of the 10 releases but took it back down to 7.2 for her. (Stability) she loves it and uses it daily.

Considering getting one, would like opinions...

So I am on tmobile with my SGS Vibrant and the sensation isn't getting me excited and the thought of waiting until near winter is killing me, and then I stopped and wondered why I didn't just get a tablet in the mean time?
The only thing my vibrant doesn't do that i wish it did was play dungeon defenders, and with 1gig ram and a tegra2 the transformer should play it easy. Plus I just want a tablet and being pretty darn cheap among it's competition without seeming to sacrifice much I just need the slightest push into trying to track one down.
Any downsides to getting a tablet and not upgrading my phone? Any downsides to getting the tranformer instead of waiting a month or paying a little more for something else?
Also I just read the pcmag review and was getting kind of annoyed. They kept saying it wasn't quite an iPad2 and complained about how the keyboard they got was buggy (iPad2 doesn't have that option, hell no one does), and that flash 10.2 is still in beta, but isn't apple pretty far behind in flash on their "mobile" devices?
Sorry, that almost became a rant. So opinions? Any one else who was like me (on the wall about getting a tablet) who took the plunge and now very happy/unhappy about it? I suppose I could order it on Amazon and would have time to return it, but I would like to know what I should be checking for at least so I can see if it bothers me or not.
Thanks for any and all help. I will now go look at the dev section and see if that gets me more excited or not.
I vote go for it! You wont be dissapointed. There are a lot of fun things to do with the tablet vs just a phone. Let your imagination run with this thing.
I was going to get the Galaxy Tab 10.1. But after finding out that it didnt have a microSD card slot that was a deal breaker. I then began to look at other Tablets. Then I found it. It had all the features I wanted and was cheaper than others. It also had an option for a keyboard that almost doubles the battery life. The decision was easy. I got my Transformer yesterday and I am super happy with my decision. Def go for it. Newegg had them in stock last friday at $499 free ship and no tax. I added a class 10 32 gig microSD. Came to like $570. Also tiger direct had the keyboards in stock as of monday. Have fun with your Transformer. Im very happy with mine.
Wow. When I posted this Amazon had stock of the 16gb model (which would be plenty for me), now they don't. Newegg does but there are no returns for refund (just in case).
I guess I will hold off for now since I am moving at the end of the month any way and shouldn't be splurging right now.
I ALMOST bought one earlier but so many people reported a lot of annoyances that I don't think I would get one without the assurance that I can send it back if I need to.
There's going to be annoyances with any device one gets, really. Especially with a first generation device like the TF. I really do suspect that some of the "problems" voiced are those of perception but, on the other hand, there are some bonafide issues that require addressing.
I've been fortunate, mine has been great. Rooted, Prime 1.4 and OC to 1.4. It performs quite well.
Shiznit... Amazon got more in stock, so I put one on my credit card... At least with amazon if I get it and feel stupid for having done so I get 30 days to return it... I think.
Otherwise I will be telling everyone how cool tablets are by wednesday and playing too much dungeon defenders.
However I already know to check for dust and screen bleed. Anything else to be cautious about? I probably won't pull out the magnifier glass or anything but I being a poor college student I don't want to regret my purchase (I will get the dock when school starts more than likely).
sound balance.
Flash is at 10.3 and Apple refuses to even consider it at the moment. The Android 3.1 update came with an update for the keyboard which it prompted me to install when I first connect to mine. No problems. Nothing close to a force close has appeared since I've had mine. Appreciate the product well enough I took some high resolution photos and did a blog post about it.

Does this mean like speaker placement, or speakers not being equal volume, or like imbalance in tones/pitch?
I've seen this a few times and am not quite sure what to not hope for. I guess I will have to pay attention to if the sound in general bothers me, but thanks.
And @4D, thanks, I will check that out. I hate how everyone bumps tech site reviews and makes it some what of a pain to find decent personal reviews (because, you know, I am not a tech site, I am just a person who wants to know what the device will feel like and not compare it to the ipad2)
see my thread "Still the new hotness".. I'm in lurve baby!!
I've had my TF for two weeks now. I have the 32gb with the dock. Bought it overseas in Australia (ended up being cheaper there than the US)! Apart from the fact that our company has complicated templates for MS Word and Excel, the machine is perfect. I've been able to VNC back into my full sized laptop several times, and it's really going to be a desktop replacement for me on the road.
I had an Asus EeePC prior, and loved that, and this is no different. My one annoyance is the right hand shift key, and that there is no keyboard shortcut for recent apps. However, the shift key is just a getting used to thing. As for the recent apps thing, if that's the only other issue, I'm doing pretty well!!!

Not on contract at the moment, so I don't get upgrades. Maybe early next year I will go back on contract simple for a new phone (since the prices are getting pretty high on their own)

[Q] worth the purchase?

the question is pretty obvious. Given the current launch of new tablets vs. rooted NC is it still worth the purchase.
I don't really need a tablet for anything other than reading the ebooks / and digital comics i have. I like to tinker and play with stuff so custom roms and rooting are fine with me and I would most likely try to push an NC to it's limits, but given what's coming in late fall early winter would you still purchase the NC (provided you have one)
Well, the NC is a great idea for a budget tablet. 1.3 GHz is really good for a meant-to-be-ebook reader compared to just a 200 MHz faster Flyer which is meant to be a business tab. Also, if you want to fool around, the NC is the best. It has a root and a ever-growing dev community. And you can't argue the price. Coming soon I would have still gotten on of these, but since I have one now I'm saving up for a Flyer (I do more than read books!) But, it's your choice and money. Disregard this if you want to.
Well, what are you comparing to?
Which new tablets are you looking to get instead?
I mean _right_ now, I don't see a better option provided you don't need the things that nook doesn't have (bt/gps/mic/etc).
Screen, cm7, safety to mess around with, etc...it's great.
For the price, you can't beat the Nook Color. Especially if you pick up one of the Refurbs B&N is selling on eBay with full 1 year warranty for $190. It is so easy to play with and install custom ROMs. Like Phatdawg mentioned, unless you need a camera, GPS, or any of those extras, the Nook Color is great.

What other tablet can you purchase now, or soon, for $250 retail with warranty? The answer is as obvious as the question, IMO. NC is about doing what all the other tablets do for half the price.

thats a good question, im not sure. There seems to be a few options coming out the A100, Lenovo has one coming out, toshiba has one coming out. Im more aware of whats available I guess than what's down the road. hmmmm i guess there's a life metaphor in that somewhere.

great responses everyone! Thank you all for your input. I'll see you all soon when I get my NC and join the family.
best,
P.
I'll have to give into selling my G Tablet for a nook color. I'd rather have portability and a better screen than a dual core and working honeycomb.
Also Nook color is $189 refurb on ebay right now. Now is the time to buy a nook color.
Just ordered mine yesterday, looks they raised the price to 199, but still a good deal
Congrats. If you need any help installing your custom ROM or rooting PM me.

Thoughts on this tablet.

I was thinking about buying the nook color and was searching around on bestbuy and found the Coby MID7022-4G. I haven't found anything about rooting it but I do like the 1 GHZ processor. Does anyone have any information on these as far as rooting and custom roms?
http://www.androidtablets.net/forum...chnical/18701-need-root-solution-mid7022.html
Root info, looks like they've got it figured out. I'd be interested in playing around with this to see how it runs. Might be a good stop-gap before I've got enough cash for a GT10.1.
That thread is really confusing, I can't make out a definitive way of rooting it. Then after rooting it are there any custom roms. I would be really interested in messing with one before actually buying it. And I want to know that I can at least put cm7 on it and possibly overclock it. Some more information on the support of this device would be great possibly someone that has one?

Some people have CM7 on it, that's about as much as I've gathered. There was another more extensive thread on the same site.
Also, if you're patient, they're introducing a 10.1" version along the same lines:
http://www.cobyusa.com/?p=prod&prod_num_id=10540&pcat_id=1013
The key, it appears, is that this (and the 7" referenced above) are capacitive touch screens, not resistive like others in the Kyros line.
(EDIT: There is also a currently-available MID1024 that looks very similar, but with 2.2 instead of 2.3.)
Personally, I wouldn't buy it, because from their headphones to cd players, Coby products never seem to last or are ridden with defects.
You can get a recert Nook Color for $199. I just bought one for my Mom, you could not tell it was a recert. CM7 on SD or on nand, your choice.
i think that I'm going to end up getting the nook color. I like the devekopment community behind it and i know that I'm getting a well mad device if i go with it.

Coby is the worst manufacturer ever. Everything I've ever owned by them has been straight garbage. ****'s always broken, mis-aligned, or malfunctioning. I would definitely avoid them; there are plenty of other solutions that are better.

Best thing about the Nook Color is the 1024x600 IPS screen. It's fantastic. better than anything in or near its price range.
I've got a Nook Color running CM7. Rock solid stable at 1.2 Ghz.
Coby doesn't actually manufacture tablets, they just re-brand them.
I honestly don't use my nook color as a tablet, but I can tell you that I absolutely love it as an e-reader. On the rare occasions that I actually pull up the browser, I can easily see how it could make a good tablet, but frankly I have my netbook with me all the time so I don't really need a tablet. I had an iPad too but it's really my wife's and she's welcome to it.

I decided to sell my TF to get another tablet

I have been thinking the past few days about this decision.
I love the TF so much and how fast it is especially after rooting it, and with the keyboard its another awesome device.
HOWEVER, I don't use that keyboard a lot. I use it only when I need the USB port. So, paid $150 for just USB port!!! a don't type a lot with my tablet. Even if I need to type a lot, I will use my desktop.
So, I am having a wide, and little bit think and heavy tablet with an extra keyboard that I don't use while I can have the Samsung galaxy tab 10.1 with lighter and thinner + a small adapter for USB port whenever I need that. am I right?
I know that I will lose two things: 1. losing money by paying more 2. lose the capability to extend the capacity size by not having micro sd card slot.
BUT, I can reply to that 1. I will pay more for the thickness and weight 2. it doesn't really matter for me to expand the size more than 16gb. I never filled it up. I know its good option to have, but its ok with me.
This how it came to my mind the idea of selling the TF and getting the galaxy 10.1
any comments?!!
Another fascinating tale of personal preference!
Seriously, though. It's not a contest. If you're happy with your choice then that's all that matters. What do you care what a bunch of strangers on an Internet forum think?
Besides, you'll probably be back when the TF2 comes out anyway.
Good luck!
I decided to sell my Transformer also. I bought an Apple Newton. The viewing angles on the Transformer were just too hard to look past. I found myself using it less and less. Hopefully I will get way more use out of the newton.
If you don't care about sharing ideas, then don't. But don't make people who like sharing thinking like you by not sharing.
So the reason I am posting is to share ideas and see what others think.

I thought about buying a Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet (the one with the keyboard).
But i've started using my keyboard less and less so i sold it, so i no longer see the point. You can get Galaxy Tab 10.1 on ebay for rediculous cheap prices, but what would be the point of selling one Honeycomb Tablet for another, especially one without an external micro sd, which i constantly swap with my phone, (a Sensation with a 32gb) can't imagine anyone buying a tablet with no external micro sd card
Why in the world would you want to sell your TF?
checkbox: not sure where you get the "ridiculous cheap prices" for the Galaxy Tab on eBay from. Last i checked, $400+ for a $400+ tablet isn't really that much of a bargain.

I don't have any problems with HC. I like it I want to still use it in my next tablet. Also, I don't care really about having SD card reader because I will have the connection adapter instead of the whole keyboard.

yeah, I know. that part sucks!! its not cheep to get it. Selling my transformer with the keyboard will get me only 16gb galaxy with out paying a penny out of my pocket. and if I want the 32gb I have to pay some more.
Definitely not worth it in my opinion.
If I were you I'd rather wait till TF2 comes out before making any decision. What's more if the dock you are having now is compatible to use with TF2? That saves you a lot of money without the dock already.
No point rushing, take your time and observe.
If you plan on using a stylus the ThinkPad tablet works great. Just got the ThinkPad tablet a few days ago and still testing out with the apps.

Well, if you are going to do it, now is the time. The NewEgg $60 Gift Card promotion on it ends today. You could then use the gift card to buy the adapter you are talking about and you might be able to break even sale of your TF and gear.
Good luck.
How are people not filling up their tablets? Do you guys consume no media away from home?
I travel a ton and i like to have some videos on there and the HD rips fill up the memory in no time. Even with the combined 16+32 I have to cycle through videos from time to time to keep the content fresh.
Ive read this a few times now, do people really see a speed increase after rooting their TF's ?

I swapped from 3.1 unrooted stock to Prime 1.5, and are now running Revolver 2.5.1 with Clemsyn Blade kernel. I dare to say I've noticed very noticable increase in general smoothness when scrolling homescreens and such from 3.1 stock. However, I don't know how stock unrooted 3.2 with latest updates run like. Initial thought after going custom ROMs was pretty much "wow, this is almost iPad-smooth". Just almost, tho. But hey... who couldn't render a list of icons insanely fast, anyways?

[Q] The Color still worth it?

So I have been an xda member since long before the android craze took root, or even before the icrap products were aired, back in the days when the good old winmo or symbian was the only platform of choice for enthusiasts and geeks like us. Those days are sadly the past now, and most of the good folks who were driving the growth of the winmo platforms have now migrated to android, or even ios.
I'm finally taking the jump too and have decided to tinker around with android, thus my dusting off of this account and bringing it back to life from lurker status. I've already purchased a xoom and an iconia a500 recently and am now looking to purchase a third tablet. I know, that sounds a little crazy, buying three tablets on the trot, but they're all going to go around among either family or family after I'm done playing with them. Since I've run my cash well dry by now, as you might as well have guessed, this is going to be my last tech purchase for a while, and probably might also be the tablet that gets left over to me in the end after the others are set up and sent to their new homes as presents as this will be the cheapest yet.
There, I've laid out the whole story. Now for the nagging question, is the nook color still worth the money? I had set my mind on the purchase and was getting down to the exploring options part when I noticed craigslist showing kindle fires going consistently for as much or as the nook colors or even less than that. And that has got me torn. I really badly wanted to buy another nook device, this will be me second after the nook simple touch, which I have yet to receive. However, I am also a performance and a bang for buck junkie, and I am also likely to end up staying with for the long haul. So I want something robust enough ot last me a couple of years from now atleast. Now with the fire sometimes going even cheaper than the nook, is the color still a good buy, and should I take the plunge on this, or that?
I really havent found a recent comparison between the two, especially if they're competing for my dollars at the same price point, to help me decide which one ot go with. The lack of a micro sd is the real killer in fire, the lack of dual core and a modern, higher performing soc in the nook color. I'll be buying either as a potential primary device and will be tinkering with both, meaning rooting, and installing custom roms, so I couldnt care less for what amazon tries forcing down my throat. And I will definitely be buying second hand, probably off craigslist, to save what little I can of my last bits of remaining money and hopefully buy a radeon 7850.
So there, thats my dillema, all put out in fornt of you folks. The question has been bothering me for days, and no amount of searching has managed to help me, and thus I have ended up here, resorting to the good old xda and its pool of immense resources.
Also, should I post this same question on the kindle fire threads too, to get the other side of the picture? Any help would be appreciated.
--Werentuckl
Nook Color is definitely still worth it* You can get them used or refurb and the prices come down to around $100.
*It really depends on what you want it for though. It would be more appropriate to compare a Nook Tablet to a Kindle Fire. But the Color is really the ultimate tinker's device. Great developer community and practically unbrickable. With CM7 and CM9 you get great performance numbers for the hardware and tons of bang for the buck.
Nook Tablet is also a good device but it is going to cost more which brings other possible tablets into consideration. Even though B&N wasn't as nice making the NT as open as the NC it is still a great device and the developer support is growing. It is nearly as good for tinkering as the NC at this point.
If you want a device for email, light gaming, web surfing, videos and tinkering as well as a great reading device the Nook Color is about the best bang for the buck you can get.
JP
I agree. Still a lot of bang for the buck, especially in the $100 range. My coworker always brings me ads from here and there advertising Android 2.0 tablets for $88, this one beats them every time for just a few dollars more.
I used to run Android 1.5 off the SD card using haret on Windows 6.0 (HTC Touch). I miss those days.
After Modding 6 or 7 Nook Colors for family, friends, and coworkers today I decided to pick one up from Cowboom for $100. My daughter has a HTC Flyer and Wife has an iPad 1. I really have no use for one, but I like to tinker from an alpha/beta tester standpoint, and I figure I could at least get my money back when I get bored with it.
All good points actually, and the reminder about android on winmo reminds me of my cousin, he still runs gingerbread of his hd 2. Good stuff.
However, what actually has me torn is seeing both the fire and the nook color going for the same prices. They're both hitting close to hundred on pre-owned units off craigslist. So I can't really decide which would be the better choice for the same price.
And the nook color was my first choice, the merits of rootability and the vibrant community had me won over. And then I saw the fire going for the same price for twice the processor, and now I don't know which way to lean.
The Fire doesn't have an SD card slot. Total deal breaker.
my nook essentially hard bricked without warning, just out of warranty. beyond that it was just too slow IMO for me - laggy video was my main issue. my RAZR is so nice for playing video i no longer can stand slow processor Android devices. my next tablet is probably the Samsung galaxy tab 2 for $250, dual core, GPS, camera, compass, microphone... all the stuff that is missing in the NC. i think you should save your money and put it towards something less limited
The reply above is right on. Personally, I would not buy another Nook in todays market. I have a Nook Tablet too (both were gifts). The Nook was great when I was learning to flash roms, etc because it is literally unbrickable.
What I really HATE is B&N and TI putting all the effort to lock the OS down. If it were not for the great devs here the Nook sales would have stalled long ago.
I for one will never buy another product which has such an anally locked boot loader and OS. The Nexus Tablet is right around the corner.
You should have asked here about the issue you were having with laggy video. I watch .avi's every day at lunch, Grimm, Walking Dead, etc., keep Hitchhikers Guide on it as a matter of principal and keep a few Pinky and the Brain's as baby sitting tools. I use MoBo player and software decode everything. Smooth as glass. The "Server Room Drive-In" is famous.
Ok, here's my 2 cents. As I only own NC, I'll comment only on it.
The nook color is a good device- for old technology. Ok, so the DEV team for NC is fantastic, porting ICS over, which has completely revamped how I see/use the NC now. It's awesome, plays videos, works smoothly. Everything is running clean from Eyeball's nightly.
However, as from your situation, you're looking to keep this device for a while. While the software side (able to crack BN, root, and run android) is fun to tinker with and has good support, the hardware is just not going to be good enough for these days' technology. There are a lot of apps that just needs more power than what the NC has.
So, if you're just buying to tinker and browse the internet on the go, NC is fine. But if u wanna do anything heavy, wait a few more months until some of the newer gen android tablets are priced lower in the market.
Btw, the fire without SD? deal breaker.
Okay, so I've been following this thread, and frankly, it hasnt made my choice any easier. I've gotten two posts against the nc, every post against the fire thanks to its lack of an sd slot, and plenty of others cautioning me against the nc because its dated. :'(
Now what do I do? And guys, even though I will be keeping this device for good, lets not forget that I'm under money constraints, I go any higher and I wont be able to buy my gpu. Plus, waiting is also not an option, I have until the end of this month to complete all my purchases, since I'm getting all this through a family member coming back from the states.

I fail to see a problem. You say you are a tinkerer. The unbrickable nature of the NC, (yes someone said they bricked it a while back but they also said they couldn't play videos either, do the math), makes it a no-brainer. Couple that with the fact that you can get them for between $100 and $150 all day long and you are golden.
I am actually satisfied with my nook color use it more than my ipad 2, feel that the ipad is big for all day use

Given the lack of information on the Google tablet, I would go with either the Nook Color or Nook Tablet. Given limited cash, obviously the nook color. I have a nook color and nook Simple Touch. I love the nook color, sure it doesn't have everything I want, but nothing does. If you are worried about it being dated, you will never buy anything. Everything is dated by the time it gets to market. The biggest problem I have is everything seems to be designed for something else. All the roms seem to be made more for phones than tablets, even my windows 7 notebook came from HP with ta
blet services installed and running on a notebook that doesn't have the hardware to use the services. I am more
worried about the Microsoft/BN deal. Perhaps it will mean more support for windows products in Android, more likely like the Kindle Fire, the next nook will not have a SD slot and will be designed to push people to Microsoft's online services. Perhaps even a nook running windows...
Microsoft always has found creative ways to kill great products... But from what I see, the Nook is by far the best for the money.
I'd agree with Floyd, the google tablet wont be launching until after I am unable to purchase anymore.
So, I'm leaning just a little more towards the nook now than I was before, and I have found a couple of other options to throw in the mix for considering as well. I just found the iconia a100 going for 190, a little under 200 after taxes, at the acer ebay store. And though the fact that the thing has little to no dev support or any roms for that matter, and has abysmal battery life, the thing is still very feature rich. Should I be even be looking towards it or not? Sans custom rom loading goodness and crap battery, its very good bang for buck, no?
Damn, this is so frustrating! This is why spending the last bits of your money is always so difficult. I had no such problems buying either of the last two tablets or the wacoms. :'(
And MisRy, everything is more expensive in ny, thats where the problem initialyl started from, the nc and the fire playing in the same price brackets. Though, any ideas about any decent deals or devices solidly under 200, new, or refurbed, or even craigslisted for nyc, would be welcome.

I would say yes, depending on the price. Got mine in Feb '11 and I've worked the crap out of it. I still don't see any other 7 inch tablet in the sub $200 range as flexable as the nook. The color with CM7 RC2 hits the sweet spot for me. Of course: YMMV.

Kind of in this dilemma as well. Has anyone had trouble running programs from the play market(3d games, comic apps, drawing apps)? I picked up a NC for 125 a week ago and triple booted without a hitch. It just seemed kind of slow to me, but then again I didn't do too much tweaking. I already returned it but might get it again. Awaiting the Nexus tablet, but would like something to hold me over til then. Any recommendations?
I wouldn't pay 150 for NC, maybe 100 nowaday since the nook tablet is going for 200.
