[Q] Cant stop sync

Like many others I have very poor battery life with my handset and if I forget to charge overnight it's empty in the morning.
To try and get as much out as possible I am disableing everything I can in terms of wifi, bluetooth and sync.
Now this is where I'm confused. The phone is linked to my Exchange server for contacts and email with push updates enabled. However even when I disable sync and background data I'm still having email pushed to the device.
This is definately not helping on the battery life front but short of doing a full reset and setup is there anywhere else I should be looking to turn this off when not needed?

you can't, what you can do is to change it to sync once every hr.
Go to Settings > Accounts and sync > Tab on your exchange account > Account Settings > Email check frequency, change it to "Every Hour"
and Amount to synchronize to "1 day", it won't delete email you have downloaded to SGS, it just don't try to sync older day data. --> This will help your battery life

Thats just daft.
Why have the options to disable sync if it's then compleatly ignored. Is this the same for the google account as well? I only have this on the phone for market access but will manually disable all sync on this account if it will help battery life.

Google Mail sync will be manual
even with 1 hr + 1 day setting, I get significant battery life improvement.

Changing gmail fetch rate?

On the Gmail app on the Vibrant, is there any way to set when your phone checks for mail? I'd like to be able to lower the rate at which it checks. Can't seem to find any option for it whatsoever.

As far as I know, there is no polling interval. New e-mails are pushed directly to your phone the moment they arrive.

If you want to do this, you need to turn off email sync, with gmail , and set gmail up with the regular email app on the phone, gmail gets push mail notifictations, the regular app polls at a set time.

Well if that's true then surely that is hurting battery life, no?

A further question:
Will Gmail still update if you turn off Auto Sync? What about Background Data?

if you turn off auto sync, then nothing will come to the phone that is on that account, email, contacts, calendar, etc. its either all on or all off

Not necessarily. You may want to look into other options to conserve battery life, but if you feel that Gmail is the culprit, Id say that watcher has the appropriate solution. The regular email app, is decidedly less feature filled, but you can certainly change the polling interval with it.

No, with Auto-sync off, you only get calls and texts.

I don't believe that is necessarily true. Gmail leaves a TCP/IP connection open to a server, but transmits no data unless there is a new message. In other words, think of your phone as running a very simple and secure server that is ready and listening for Google to connect to it and alert it that there is a new message to retrieve (I don't think it's really a server, but it helps conceptually). Leaving that port open and a constant connection with no data flowing requires no additional battery life over what is necessary for your cellular modem to be on (which you need to be able to receive calls as well).
Wikipedia says that the technology used is Microsoft ActiveSync, but I'm inclined to believe it's XMPP (which is what Google Talk uses and is built into Android for other uses as well). But the above description of the technology is valid either way.

Every time a message is received, battery life is consumed in order to download the message. So, if you were to get the message on your desktop first, handle it, and delete it, I presume that would save you the battery life of the download of that message, but that is a very nominal amount of battery life. I wouldn't worry about it.

Just a heads up to the OP (or anyone interested) regarding the stock email application- my experience was that the polling interval was unreliable. I have 3 email accounts, 2 of them were set to check on frequent intervals like 10 minutes or something and the third was set up to check on the hour.
Often times the stock email app would miss the intervals or would not check at all. Additionally there were numerous occasions that mail was sitting on my server but the stock vibrant mail would report no messages.
Your mileage may vary as many people seem to have very different experiences with their phones and bugs. My experience with the stock email app was pretty poor so I thought it worth sharing.
GPS and such annoyed me but I figured I'd be able to wait it out for a fix. Email was nearly a deal breaker though, especially having these problems after coming from blackberrys which do a great job with email.
I figured gmail was the way to go but i didnt want to get into some complex forwading scheme fr all of my email addresses.
The way I ended up working it out was to set up a free Google business account and change the mx records on my mail server to run through Google servers instead of my webhosts servers. Now I'm running all of my email addresses on the Gmail application and have push email and aside from a few minor gripes with the gmail/android interface I am pretty happy overall.
I'd suggest sticking with the gmail application, push email is a good thing.

Juice Defender from the market allows for setting how often your phone connects to a data connection. More or less doing the same thing.
I don't personally use it since I don't care, but it should answer the OP's question with a working solution.

I don't get all that many emails a day so was just curious if disabling it would save a lot of battery life. Since the general consensus is that it doesn't I'll leave it be.

does anyone know if its possible to run juice defender and still have background sync work for gmail? or is it that you just end up with syncing 1 time out of every 15 minutes? I enabled gmail to use the data connection but i assume that would only be when gmail is actually open. so what happens now when gmail trys to sync, will it just fail?

I'm curious about this as well. I use K9-Mail as well as GMail. If my sync interval is set to 5 minutes, but Juice Defender only turns on data every 15 minutes, which one wins? I assume Juice Defender and that the apps will just silently fail to update and try again later. Is that right?

beats me, but I'm probably going to uninstall this, I don't mind turning off the data, but not to the extend that i'm neutering my 2010 phone to do it. I mean seriously, it can't just check for sync on applications and activate the 3g? and turn off when the thing has the screen closed except for syncing? I'd expect an app to work like this one does 10 years ago. the phone is smarter than the app attempting to control it.

Yes, the inboxes won't sync while data is off. So worst case scenario you have a 15 minute delay between getting emails. You can set it to a faster data sync time - like 5 minutes. But you might only be able to do that with the paid app - UltimateJuice - I'm not sure.
I don't think the phone can do what you're wanting to do because of the way push email works. Generally, and I could be wrong here, Gmail works like other push email systems in that it requires a constant data connection (Like IMAP Idle) to notify when a new email comes in. The sync'ing you're talking about is more like a pull than a push. The problem with pulling is that it is way more taxing on the battery since it's actively checking at certain intervals if there are new emails. And if juicedefender was set to turn on 3g whenever something tried to pull - firstly the service would use way more battery than it's saving since it would constantly poll to see if anything is requesting a data connection, secondly, data would almost always be on - defeating the purpose.

Actually yes. The free version allows you to specify which 1 app that can bypass the data blocking. The paid version let's you specify more. (click on the "Apps" button then "configure apps" in juice defender setup)

I have JD & UJ installed, i think i have it configured ok, I have it set so no data while screen is off but I still get gmail come thru when screen is off.
I have the schedule set to check every 2 hours, does this over rule the setting for no data while screen is off.
I wish there was an extensive guide provided with these types of apps

That's why JD just got uninstalled.
Grr, I want my Blackberry back. I could have everything ON and still get 3+ days between charges.

I use the free version and can confirm that it is at most a 15 minute delay between emails. Its not really a big deal. It is just as responsive.
I get about 50% more battery life with the default settings.

You set it up to prefer wifi, turn data off with the screen. You set the timer to allow data connection on whatever schedule you want, ie 5 minutes every 2 hours. Then you are done. Do you really need a guide written to explain this? Then your emails will come through during whatever window you set up, ie 5 minutes every 2 hours.

I just have one JD question.. probably a dumb one..
I typically toggle my data manually. But I think I'd like to try letting JD do it's thing (turn data on for 2 minutes, twice per hour)..
So do I leave my manual toggle in the on, or off position? Their instructions are unclear (or I'm looking in the wrong place..)
In other words, if I have data manually toggled off, will JD override that and do it's thing?
Or do I have to leave data toggled on for JD to work?

Android System and OS using a lot of data plus 17-20% of battery

My battery life has not been as good since I upgraded the ROM a few weeks ago. The biggest culprit seems to be the Android System and Android OS. Each of them typically use about 8-10% of the battery, so it's not uncommon for them to have used 20% of the battery combined.
In addition, Android System uploads a bunch of data. In a full day, Android system typically sends 3-5 MB and receives 400-900 KB.
Android OS (is this all apps combined??) has uploaded 500-1000 KB and receives 10-20 MB.
I've frozen the apps on the receommended list (except for a couple I use like the ATT code scanner). Use no social network stuff. I do have Exchange plus two Gmail accounts + 3 K9 email accounts setup.
I can't seem to manage any setting change to reduce the battery/data usage of these two.

I've done all those things except for (Settings > Data manager > Data Delivery > social apps > sync over wifi), which I did actually do a couple hours ago on one last run through the settings to make sure I hadn't missed anything before posting here.
What the heck is android system uploading? Is that motoblur backing things up? I have searched XDA and googled and while I have seen the question about Android System with large uploads, I have yet to see a solid answer as to what's going on.

I think it's constantly receiving contact numbers and contact photos and status' from facebook. no way to turn that off i dont think unless your rooted. i know anytime i call someone, their status and facebook pic is new and haven't seen it before almost every time.

I am rooted, and have frozen most of the apps on the recommended list.
I don't have facebook or twitter accounts setup. Only Exchange, Gmail and some K9 IMAP accounts.

using traffic monitor, i found that the calibrate compass service, which seems to be a whole suit of services sucks down a lot of data. its been using about 1gb data a month. which im sure is putting some strain on the battery.

Multiple email accounts will cause a great deal of data usage on their own. Especially an exchange account and a gmail account.
If you can, why not use the gmail account to send and receive all the email for the imap accounts. I do this with my business accounts and my personal email.
You also may be syncing your contacts and all with both the exchange and the gmail account which would cause extra data and would be a bit over kill.

[Q] Some unknown application is using a lot of packet data

My Samsung Galaxy Y GT-S5360 has Android version: 2.3.6. My phone isn't rooted.
Recently some unknown app is using my 2G packet data mysteriously. I am on a cheap internet plan, so this uses up good percentage of my data; though I can ignore it. But my phone becomes hot (~35° C) and obviously battery gets used up. The mysterious usage eats up data ranging between 4-20 MBs. I am unsure if it is random or just that I am lucky to notice this and stop it before it goes SPARTA.
To find out, I tried out various usage monitoring apps, but that none helped to find out which app uses the data. The overall usage in the monitoring app accounts to the used sum, but no signs of what app it is.
I just have Google account(with sync off for Picasa albums) and WhatsApp listed in my Accounts and sync settings. Both have been ON since the day I have this phone, but this thing is happening recently, so I cannot blame them. Also, I do not have much that'd get synced and use this lot of data.
I have disabled auto update of my phone and the Play Store apps.
Due to low internal memory, I have uninstalled all of the default app's(i.e Google Map, Talk, Mail etc) updates except Play Store.
For having a clear idea I will list down the apps whose services are ON on my phone:
WhatsApp

I had linked all the possible apps to their Play Store page for your convenience to know about the app if in case you didn't, the system didn't allow me to, it says I need minimum 10 posts, upon which I do agree.
I had a thought if the counter on my service provider's side is bugged, but I have seen the uplink and downlink symbols continuously lighted, I switch on my packet data and find a crazy amount of data getting accounted in my usage.
PS: I stay in Mumbai, India. I am on Aircel's GSM network.
Will be thankful if you can help me find a solution to this problem. I have tried to provide most the information that I thought would be helpful, please ask if you need more information.

none of those apps listed (if downloaded from the playstore) should cause large ammounts of data usage
Whatsapp out of all of them would most likely be the largest
If your phone is hot its most likey an app is running all the time stopping the phone from going to sleep (as long as you havent got the phone on charge as this will also stop phone sleeping)
