aight, I tried searching, and the few threads that mentioned this, was for full rooted phones... I'm on stock sense, permarooted using VISIONary+, etc... I got the OTA update at 12am, tried to do it, and the phone locked up on the screen with the phone and a red lightning bolt... did a battery pull, did the "unroot" via VISIONary, and the phone works fine... am I going to receive the OTA update again, or should I DL the zip file from the other thread, put it on my SD card, and power up + volume key, etc... pretty much, any help or suggestions is appreciated... lol

Impossible. You must not be truly perm rooted since rooted phones (even those running the stock ROM), don't get OTA updates. You must have TEMP rooted with Visionary. The only way to truly perm root with Visionary is in conjunction with the root.sh script.
i didn't edit any script past what visionary does... it's probably the equivalent of a temproot, but I don't have to redo it every time I reboot... I haven't touched it in months... I used the unroot function, so I'm not sure if the "run visionary.sh after root" or the "set system r/w after root" were checked... I know jack **** about this stuff, that's why I'm here... lol
this means youre not rooted. so if you want the update just walk in to a tmo store and have them update it with their sd card update.
That's funny.. my superpower, shootme, and TI backup are working... like I said.. I didn't s-off root my phone, but I do have SU privledges

Somehow your temp root is sticking after a reboot. Superpower? It's called Superuser. Sorry, but I LOLed at that.

SU is stuck too, but the app is called SuperPower... it's a battery management app, but after reading further, root isn't required, just recommended to use all of the features

I got this question but was not sure how to answer it. I understand that TEMP ROOT only sticks until a battery pull or a complete power cycle, and PERM ROOM via visionary r12 is supposed to stick EVEN after a complete powerdown and reboot.
Question asked was if you PERM ROOT via visionary, and then remove apps via titanium backup, does it also PERM remove the app from nandlock? In other words if the perm root is REMOVED via visionary, and then you power cycle and reboot, will the DELETED apps come BACK?
Thanks.. I wanna make sure Im giving out CORRECT information.... I have only perm rooted a htc hero and when I removed APKS from it after rooting, they were gone FOREVER, but I am not sure about nandlock devices.. thanks
Hey all,
In addition to the first question,
if i temp-root my HTC Desire HD, and then do a powercycle.
would my free-but-not-really-free-applications still run?
But we are no longer nandlock?

If I understand correctly, no they won't come back if u r perm root

If you paid for your apps you would not have this concern...
If you temp root with visionary then uninstall the apps with titanium back up, they will return after the battery is removed. I tried it I was having trouble perma rooting and my apps that were removed came back after a battery pull. But after I got s-off the apps stay uninstalled.
i have been reading the noob root guide and have a problem. with 2.10 hboot installed, when i log in to shell, command for super user i get permission denied.the phone never showed anything on the screen. titanium backup shows not rooted.so at this point i think z4 root is not working.any ideas?
Did you take the 3.70 OTA update?
Last I checked, z4 doesn't work on the evo. There are other methods that work for the evo.

yes.
i hav been fallowing the noob root guide.
Well there you have it. It seems 3.70 patches the exploit that z4root was using to get access to root. AFAIK, there are no new exploits that can be used for root access on 3.70 so you'll have to wait.
you need to hit TEMPORARY root on z4root. make sure you are using the 1.3.0 version of z4root, because none of the earlier ones have temporary root. the temp root feature definitely works on evo. it is just a few simple lines of coding. not too difficult for an app.

did you ever figure out your radios? I figured out my issues with bad 4g.. I had to deroot my phone then reroot. So from day one I had 4g, I rooted and didnt check on sprint lovers rom if I had 4g. then I flashed fresh and didnt check until later and noticed no 4g... so then I flashed myns and nope.. but Istill had my RSAs and MACs...
so then I derooted and then rerooted. 4g from stock, 4g after root, 4g on sprint lovers and 4g on myns.

ruu is a program for pc that flashes over most partitions with the stock sprint unrooted rom. it is ALMOST the whole process of unrooting and is considered 'starting over'. google is your friend on these sort of things.

I am on 3.70, and like the Hulk have had issues getting z4root to work. After about 15 attempts, reinstalling the program, clearing data, etc. I got the program to work one time and did a Titanium backup of a few apps. Since then, I have been unable to get it to work again. Something in the process also rendered several of the apps that I moved to the SD card inoperable. I imagine a factory reset or RUU might do the trick, but I haven't taken those steps yet.
I recently updated, using the files retrieved from this site, my rooted Bravo to 2.2.
Everyone posted saying it would unroot it in the process, however superuser is still there, and I cannot use it, get rid of it, or even reroot my phone. I need help :/

all you need to do is run superoneclick, choose psneuter and root it again. it disables the su binary when updated.

I tried, but then when I try using any program that requires root access, it can't find it. Rootexplorer, setCPU, and even your overclock app won't work.
Also, z4root won't even root/unroot. Crashes every time.
did you reboot after running s1c? I know I always forget to.
So I have an old MT4G laying around that already has a void warranty and I don't think it can be activated anymore either (used the insurance to get a new one after the screen cracked and they said to not bother sending it in because of all the problems we were having with them).
Anyway Iv'e been wanting to learn to root for quite awhile now (since I got the original moto droid a week after it came out) and this seems like the perfect opportunity to learn. If I brick it it doesn't really matter since it doesn't get used anyway but my question is can I root it without it having a sim card?
Thanks guys.
yes you can
Yes you can, believe you just need the sim card to access t-mos network. You can still use wifi with the phone to play around with...
Thanks guys, gonna start it today sometime so hopefully tonight I will have my first rooted device
So I used VISIONary and it seems I'm permrooted after temprooting? I have done a battery pull and left it out for about 30 secs, "restarted" and shut down and turned it back on twice and I still have superuser. Any ideas? did I just not leave the batt out for long enough?

VISIONary.apk will NOT perm root your device if the device has not been S-off. the superuser app will always be there, but that doesn't mean you have perm root. go to terminal emulator, type "su" (no quotes) and it will give you "permission denied". you must have an S-off device to perm root. there are plenty of guides out there that will tell you how to root, easiest method is using visionary/root.sh found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834225

It's got one, you just have to press the menu button. And if you want to quote people in a reply just hold down on their post.
And the App version you downloaded is what's 4.x, the RECOVERY Version should be 3.0.2.4. It'll be the first option inside the application, can't miss it lol

Ahhh ok cool. Sorry like I said I'm new to this. I hit the flash thing at the top of the app. That should be all I need to recover if anything goes wrong right? Or do I need to do a nandroid? Backup? Again sorry like I said new to this and still trying to figure everything out.
Ok hoping I didn't do anything stupid but I downloaded virtuous via clockwork it got done and asked to reboot and start the install so I started and I hit I think load from SD card or something close to that and since then it's been stuck on the what I'm gonna call the tophat screen lol (clockwork logo). Does it just take awhile to do it's thing or did I screw up?
Edit - Nvm, I'm dumb, hit the home key and the menu came back. Haha wow.

Sorry if this has been covered before, but I searched up and down XDA and google for a solution. Here is the deal; Im trying to root my phone and Im having some issues. Im getting unknown user root in Terminal when I try to run the commands from this thread.I have both versions of Visionary and I believe I have temp rooted the phone. This is where it starts to get strange. Superuser.apk is installed, but Im never prompted for SU permissions. The only app that requested it was Visionary when I tried the permaroot option. Also, I got the system to be r/w via visionary, so I tried to delete some bloat. I used root explorer to do so. But the apks I deleted are still in the app drawer, and after reboot, are still in system/app. Im really super confused by all of this, and hope you guys can give me a hand. This is a little bit different then rooting my vibrant lol.

Try another version of Visionary+, because the current version doesn't root you.
Make sure that you are indeed on 2.2.1, because if you're on 2.3.4 - Visionary can't root at all.

I had the same problem last week when trying to root my replacement phone after downgrading it to 2.2.1. The visionary app that I used before didn't work this time. I had to download it again and this time it worked. Before deleting the current visionary app make sure to clear it's data prior to uninstalling it then reboot the phone then try again. That worked for me!
Since you've already tried rooting it with so many methods, I'll suggest you restore the phone to factory settings and start over.
