Just to pass the time, what do you imagine the event is for? Personally, I hope it's to officially announce the Vigor.

HTC is planning to hold an event in New York next week on September 20th according to invites hitting press inboxes. The description of the event is "Come celebrate with us," and it indicates that it's possible that some new device is coming from HTC's side. Recently we learned about a lot of leaked HTC phones so let's take a look at some of the possibilities.

But HTC did just hold a WP7 only event not to long ago (this month I think?), so I would assume this is not WP7 related. I too hope it's the Vigor. If it's not, guess the Nexus/DROID Prime will be my next device.

I'm planning getting the Nexus Prime provided it comes out on Verizon as a Google Experience device. If it doesn't, then it can still be rooted and will have CM8 ICS goodness soon after release.
This is when HTC Will announce updates for htc desire hd and others to sense 3.0 etc...maybe new phones
I bet this is when they'll announce their new flagship phone, the "runnymede", and likely the bliss as well. If the vigor is coming out early next month, I wouldn't be surprised to see it announced at that event too. They also have the ruby (T-Mo) and holiday (AT&T) coming out, maybe we'll hear more about them on the 20th.
ICS and (not so) specifically how it will rival and surpass the then soon to be released Iphone 5. Dual announcement to include Vigor release as well.
Ugh...lame. All they gave us was the official announcement for the Rhyme (Bliss) and talking up Sense 3.5. No other phones announced.
Way lame. Not even slightly interesting.
Isn't there going to be another event October 6th where apparently the Vigor and all those other rumored phones might be announced?

US Cellular is launching galaxy S on 10/27 with 2.1. It says Froyo upgrade for this device will happen later this year.
If Samsung upgrades all Galaxy S phones to 2.2 together, we won't see Froyo till 10/27.
http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2010/10/06/u-s-cellular-to-offer-samsung-mesmerize-a-galaxy-s-phone/
I think, they will update them in the order they've been released.
For Epic it's mean somewhere in the middle.
still worth waiting.
Simple put, even if 2.2 exists..they are not gonna delay release to upgrade to 2.2..and they most likely won't upgrade the next day...Samsung may make 2.2 available at same time but its up to carriers when to release it with their "customizations"
Froyo will most likely be released this month where most will update at same time but does not mean all...the yae not gonna hold up a world wide release because of a few carriers.
That said since Transform has 2.2 shows that CDMA is not an issue any more so only thing that could cause delay is either 4g or TW3...

The Transform has 2.2? Its only been rumored that the Transform has 2.2, unless you can site me a reference?
Quote from the BGR post about Sprint announcing the Zio, Transform, and the Optimus S
The Samsung Transform will have a 3.5-inch capacitive touchscreen display (not Super AMOLED), 800 MHz processor, 0.3 megapixel front-facing camera, 3.2 megapixel rear-facing camera with LED-flash, EV-DO Rev. A and Android 2.1. We’re told the device will be upgraded to Android 2.2 shortly after launch. The phone is set to launch on 10/10/10 for $149.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate. We saw the user guide for this device leak yesterday, so no real shock here.

Transform has 2.1 when launched on 10/10. But as SGS, it will be upgradable to Froyo later this year.
CDMA has never been an issue for Froyo. I had Froyo running on Touch for 2-3 months.
What's with samsung and the slowness to get out the latest builds. The moment sat at 1.5 for ages until we finally got 2.1 when 2.2 just start rolling out.

In the first place, the OP makes the common mistake of trying to extrapolate from news about development on some other Galaxy S variant and apply that by weak inductive reasoning to the Sprint Epic 4G.
In the second place, I would be flabbergasted if Froyo is released for the Epic by 10/27, which is only 11 days from now. I have never seen any credible evidence that the Froyo rollout for the Epic platform is scheduled anywhere close to that early. So breathlessly posting "No Froyo upgrade til 10/27!!!" is just laughable all around.

3.0 is suppose to be out next month, might as well just give us that
I feel like I've been waiting for this froyo update forever. I really hope this comes at the end of October.
After that I just need:
- An official lagfix from Samsung, not complaining I think Epic is still super zippy but nice to have
- TouchWiz 3.0, well, hoping the rumors are true that we get this with the froyo update on Epic
- Bring Samsung KIES to US
Then countdown to Gingerbread!

The Transform doesn't look too impressive in person. Much smaller screen, slightly smaller device, definitely thinner though. The Transform will have 2.2 before year's end, the Epic will have it within a month. Sprint has been beta testing the 2.2 release and found some issues, making sure it releases bug free is their priority right now.

I just Read an article stating that 2.3 will be scraped, but that doesn't coincide with 2.3.3.
The Article is on pocket-lint.com or Search Google for the Phrase "Android 2.4 coming April, leaving 2.3 dead on arrival - not Ice Cream"
Sorry can't post a link.
I was looking for any sort of Response about this on the Forum or the Main Site on XDA.
Since I didn't find anything, I decided to post it.
It is interesting though, what does it mean for the Nexus S?
Peace.
IronSingh
Well if you look at it like that all OS versions are "scrapped" in the end.
My guess is the 2.3.3 will be a bugfix (reboots anyone? ^^) and NFC upgrade (as its mainly disabled in 2.3.2). And 2.4 is the next update, ovbiously making 2.3 redundant.
It's almost like seeing a report saying windows7 retail is cancelled because sp1 is coming out
IMO gingerbread/NS were rushed for the holiday release and proof is in this 2.4 update.
2.3 has too many issues poor 3d performance compared to 2.1-2.2 galaxy s FPS is inconsistent, compass is messed up ...movement is too jerky, dropped calls, crappy browser performance not 3d accelerated, the CPU seems to down clocks even when it shouldn't this might explain the inconsistent/stutter FPS when running 3d apps becasue setting CPU to performance with set SETCPU seems to smooth things out.

that's exactly the case.... like common being released on Mid Dec 2010, just a few days shy for the holiday... it's way to obvious
and all the small bugs we find here and there are prove of that
usually going from say for example 2.1 to 2.2 are like major changes
but now we got 2.3 and 2.4 that seems more like a routine maintenance release

What I mean is Why 2.3.3 when 2.4 is the actual Update.
AFAIK 2.3.3 is for Upgrade to NFC capabilities like stated in the first link over here.
Reboot issue doesn't seem to be addressed. I haven't faced the reboot issue yet, so I am not worried about that.
I think 2.4 is rushed 2.2 was somewhere in June or July, 2.3 was in Late November. 2.4 will likely be hereby March. The Gaps are getting shorter, the only way I see it is they are leaving less time to do the testing or Programmers have gotten faster leaving more time for Testing. More Likely the the earlier assumption as we can see with the problem on the Nexus.
Peace.

Very true
it does seem isolated to 2.3 becasue i loaded 2.3 on my vibrant and had same poor results
I hope some of these issues are not just becasue google wanted to improve battery life on NS .... sacrifice performance
And hopefully not overlooked with 2.4
Seems like Android 2.4 can land as soon as early April 2011 but not as Android 2.4 Ice cream, instead it will be a continuation update of Android 2.3 Gingerbread. This news was sparked by tech blog pocket-lint claiming that his sources at ViewSonic have revealed that the ViewSonic will launch their ViewPad 4 Smartphone in early April with Android 2.4. This Android update will not bring any name change and it will be still known as Android 2.4 Gingerbread. So what is it going to do? Well it is said that the Android 2.4 will essentially bring the compatibility with dual-core applications that are customized for Android 3.0 Honeycomb to the currently available single-core devices.

that's so confusing, yet so clear
Google have been sort of "advertizing" for a while that 3.0 will bring dual core support for Tablets only
but they never mentioned nothing about supporting phones with dual core
2.4 seems to be a logical place for them to test dual core support for phones, specially with the horrible test results shown on the LG phone
Wouldn't it make more Sense to Make another Branch or have some different Name Desgnation for Android for Tablet.
I don't see how the Smart Phones will skip 3.0 altogether, (I understand Smartphones will get 3.1). But the Code for Tablet and Smartphone should be similar how can it be that 3.0 will not be suitable for Smartphones.
I mean the Hardware is basically the same, they are basically stretched out phones.
The Tegra 2 in LG will be redundant in many of the early tablets.
I just don't see how they will battle the battery issue from Dual Core Processor on a phone for a while. I see dual core doing better in Tablets for the moment.
Peace.
IronSingh

You're forgetting about the 2.0 and 2.1 releases. 2.0 was released in late Nov on the Droid. No other phone ever got it and it was quickly replaced in early January with 2.1. In other words, it looks pretty much exactly like the 2.3-2.4 situation.

exactly the case here
I agree that it is the 2.0 - 2.1 situation again. Google rushed both out to get the phones out. I've been wondering if the delay for Nexus One is that they are actually going to push 2.4 to it and skip 2.3. 2.4 is still Gingerbread, so they aren't lying that Nexus One will get Gingerbread ... they just never specified the version.
So it looks like 2.4 is real and HTC phones are being released with it next month!!!

HTC has confirmed via Twitter that its new Incredible S will run Android 2.2 out of the box, but will receive an update to version 2.4 shortly after launch. The Desire S and Wildfire S, however, will run 2.4 when they're released.
This discrepancy is most likely down to release timing -- the Incredible S launches next month, whereas the Desire S and Wildfire S are slated for release during the second quarter of the year.

How did this happen?? HTC used to have the latest and greatest. everyone wanted HTC. Now, they're being beaten by LG and Moto.....really!? come on HTC we still believe!
anyways, i would lean towards the LG. the only part that turns me off is the damn 3D push. I don't want to waste any resources on 3D anything. it's a worthless tech that i think will fizzle out eventually. I do really like that phones are becoming so powerful. No. HTC was always like this. Great/decent looking phones with crap internals. The early Snapdragon release was their one shining moment. Now they've been passed and are still holding on the old A8 based Scorpion. Even their newer dual cores are based on the same core where as everyone else is using newer, faster Cortex A9 cores for their dual cores. Just look at their tablet, a single core A8 based Scorpion. It's back to business as usual for HTC, and not so much because their other components (cams) were never that great.
Nividia announced quad core phone for the end of the year.
I may just skip dual core phones all together.

I agree.. as of right now, the EVO2 is a myth.
I'm happy with my EVO for now.. it is sad to see HTC is not at all keeping up. I won't and will never buy anything Samsung. I have no clue about LG.. their phones would be promising if wasn't for the blatant touchwiz UI ripoff. Out of all the UIs to try and copy, they pick that one? The one that tries to look as close to an iphone as they possibly can? Yuck
I am starting to wonder if I will have to look at other brands tho .. which is very sad =(

Whats so wrong with the EVO?
Yea, other companies have released better phones this year but they were playing catch up to the EVO game.
Im sure when Sprint releases something new, it will be competitive with the rest of the game.
I also have hope for an EVO 2 of some sort. Hopefully no later than 3rd Quarter. I mean, isn't the EVO basically the most successful phone for Sprint in a very long time? Why wouldn't they milk that for all it's worth? Evo has more name recognition that any Sprint based phone I've ever known.
I find it amusing that people are so ready to jump ship. The Evo is a perfectly capable phone. Hell, even the Hero is still a very decent phone. Combine either with a good ROM and they are both really good. I will be happy with my Evo through the duration of my contract. By then the quad core phones with higher end GPUs will be out. I will worry about a new phone then.

Hmmmmm Well reading has brought me to the following......
QSD8672. 8672 will be based on Cortex A9 design and also will include the Adreno 220 GPU. Unfortunately, phones using this processor will arrive at earliest Q3 of 2011, if not Q4. If HTC Sabor gets released in Q3 of 2011, it could use this processor, which should outperform all of the above. (a close call when compared with Samsung’s Orion based phones).
I expect Verizon to release both Motorola Droid T2 and HTC Scorpion (T2 first) during Q1 of 2011. T-Mobile will counter it with HTC Glacier in Q1. Sprint will wait, and release Sabor in either Q2 or Q3 and possibly use more powerful processor (Qualcomm QSD8672) than their competitors. All carriers will release some flavor of Galaxy S2 during Q2 and Q3. AT&T will probably release a dual-core Windows Phone 7 device during Q2 of 2011 as well.
Performance-wise, I’d rank them in this order:
HTC Sabor for Sprint

Samsung Galaxy S2 for all carriers
HTC Glacier and Scorpion for T-Mobile and Verizon respectively
Motorola Droid T2 for Verizon

Old article is old, you'll be waiting until probably mid 2012 for the fourth gen Qualcomms. Read their latest schedules/PRs.
HTC will be lagging behind. We'll probably see their A8 based dual cores in the summer, and a few weeks later you'll probably start hearing of even better A9 based quad core Tegra 3 devices.

Since there have been rumors about a Xoom 2 possibly at the end of 2011 (Quad Motorola Xoom debut in autumn | Gadget Technology), I figure I would start a list of ideas of what you would like to see in Xoom 2. Here is my list
- Reduce weight from 1.6 lbs to about 1.0-1.1 lbs
- Reduce thickness from 12.9 mm to around 8.0 mm (don't want it too thin)
- Nvidia Tegra 3 quad core chip
- Better display (something better than just TFT)
- More RAM (hopefully 1.5 GB RAM but I doubt it though)
- Release Wifi only and wifi+3g versions at the same time
- 4g radio included (wifi+3g version only). No need to turn in your Xoom to get the 4g radio upgrade
- Android Ice Cream preloaded
- Maintain stock android experience (hopefully motorola doesn't add a UI skin layer of motoblur)
- Software fixes for SD card slot and full flash functionality (hopefully implemented before android ice cream)
What do you guys think?
Considering the developments in hardware just in the last 6 months, and a 'Xoom 2' probably wouldn't hit for at least 8 months. I'd say your list is already behind the curve.
I would suspect your list is more of a "What I wish it was now"

Of course some things on the list are what I am wishing now but there are other things that are not currently implemented which I hope will be implemented into Xoom 2.
This is why it is called a wish list. I do not get what you mean by the list is already behind the curve? In what areas?

I'm saying by the time they release a xoom 2, ice cream will be old news, that much ram would be trivial, the quad core processor would probably be succeeded. Moores Law is really a ***** this day in age
A I-5 or I-7 processor...4 gigs of ram..etc
bump bump truck
gutted.
HTC UK have just advised on facebook no official gingerbread update for the desire. so i'm guessing we arn't going to get the Kernel source

bang goes the Camcorder and grafix fixes
Terrible news...
Good thing the Evo 4G exists, guys!
4G will be good aswell ?
The Evo 4G is a minor refresh of the HD2 with Android 2.2.
Both models are built on Qualcomm Snapdragon platform with 1 GHz processor,
the EVO 4G uses a newer processor QSD8650 so im not sure.
But will it get Ginger ?
It's out already from 4th June.
The update was meant for 6th June, but HTC has released it early for users.
(Read UPDATE, not kernel source code)
Maybe if enough people put a request comment on their desicion they will release the 2.6.35 kernel source code for the Desire. (Let's hope so)
