I been waiting for any news or leaks about the true Evo successor. Was looking forward with Sprint's "look what we have under are sleeve" big event. and I was very disappointed then I read HTC was going to make a announcement on MWC what they shown was a major let down yet again.
Now, since the Evo 2 isn't coming anytime soon. looking at all these high tech phones coming out which one will you say its the your
top 3 Evo successor Options:
My picks:
1. Lg Optimus 3d

2. Motorola Atrix

i dont think we need much just a solid hardware upgrade maybe dual processors and a better gpu but the overall design of the evo is perfect imo
the longer we wait for the evo 2, the better it will be

PS. My name is HondaCop and I approve this message.
I agree with HondaCop. But then again, I still have hopes that we will have a successor by June.

How did this happen?? HTC used to have the latest and greatest. everyone wanted HTC. Now, they're being beaten by LG and Moto.....really!? come on HTC we still believe!
anyways, i would lean towards the LG. the only part that turns me off is the damn 3D push. I don't want to waste any resources on 3D anything. it's a worthless tech that i think will fizzle out eventually. I do really like that phones are becoming so powerful. I've started taking my laptop with me less and less as my phone becomes more powerful.
<rant>
I also want to know whats with Sprints handset selection team. Do they just take 364 days off a year?? what gives?? The other carriers are getting solid handsets and we're left to speculation. (not that i would ever leave sprint, i just wish they would listen to their loyal users)

No. HTC was always like this. Great/decent looking phones with crap internals. The early Snapdragon release was their one shining moment. Now they've been passed and are still holding on the old A8 based Scorpion. Even their newer dual cores are based on the same core where as everyone else is using newer, faster Cortex A9 cores for their dual cores. Just look at their tablet, a single core A8 based Scorpion. It's back to business as usual for HTC, and not so much because their other components (cams) were never that great.
Nividia announced quad core phone for the end of the year.
I may just skip dual core phones all together.

I agree.. as of right now, the EVO2 is a myth.
I'm happy with my EVO for now.. it is sad to see HTC is not at all keeping up. I won't and will never buy anything Samsung. I have no clue about LG.. their phones would be promising if wasn't for the blatant touchwiz UI ripoff. Out of all the UIs to try and copy, they pick that one? The one that tries to look as close to an iphone as they possibly can? Yuck
I am starting to wonder if I will have to look at other brands tho .. which is very sad =(
im sure sprint will get some type of higher end android phone but when? who knows! i do know if that lg 3d phone comes ill but that.

Whats so wrong with the EVO?
Yea, other companies have released better phones this year but they were playing catch up to the EVO game.
Im sure when Sprint releases something new, it will be competitive with the rest of the game.
I also have hope for an EVO 2 of some sort. Hopefully no later than 3rd Quarter. I mean, isn't the EVO basically the most successful phone for Sprint in a very long time? Why wouldn't they milk that for all it's worth? Evo has more name recognition that any Sprint based phone I've ever known.
I find it amusing that people are so ready to jump ship. The Evo is a perfectly capable phone. Hell, even the Hero is still a very decent phone. Combine either with a good ROM and they are both really good. I will be happy with my Evo through the duration of my contract. By then the quad core phones with higher end GPUs will be out. I will worry about a new phone then.

Hmmmmm Well reading has brought me to the following......
QSD8672. 8672 will be based on Cortex A9 design and also will include the Adreno 220 GPU. Unfortunately, phones using this processor will arrive at earliest Q3 of 2011, if not Q4. If HTC Sabor gets released in Q3 of 2011, it could use this processor, which should outperform all of the above. (a close call when compared with Samsung’s Orion based phones).
I expect Verizon to release both Motorola Droid T2 and HTC Scorpion (T2 first) during Q1 of 2011. T-Mobile will counter it with HTC Glacier in Q1. Sprint will wait, and release Sabor in either Q2 or Q3 and possibly use more powerful processor (Qualcomm QSD8672) than their competitors. All carriers will release some flavor of Galaxy S2 during Q2 and Q3. AT&T will probably release a dual-core Windows Phone 7 device during Q2 of 2011 as well.
Performance-wise, I’d rank them in this order:
HTC Sabor for Sprint
Samsung Galaxy S2 for all carriers
HTC Glacier and Scorpion for T-Mobile and Verizon respectively
Motorola Droid T2 for Verizon

Old article is old, you'll be waiting until probably mid 2012 for the fourth gen Qualcomms. Read their latest schedules/PRs.
HTC will be lagging behind. We'll probably see their A8 based dual cores in the summer, and a few weeks later you'll probably start hearing of even better A9 based quad core Tegra 3 devices.

I know this is not about the Nexus S, but there's no denying that anything dual-core related is inexorably related to the Nexus S and its lack of one. So:
LG announces dual-core phone for early 2011: http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/15/lg-optimus-2x-first-dual-core-smartphone-launches-with-android/
No coincidence that it's being announced right before Nexus S officially launches.
Anyone going to change their minds?
I've known the LG Star/Optimus 2X was coming soon since AndroidCentral first mentioned it awhile back. I plan to get my Nexus S anyway.
still getting the Nexus S
still getting a nexus but any word on the carrier?
No, it's not related to the Nexus S in any way. Why? Because it's not backed up by Google. Plain and simple.
It's going to Korea and then the rest of Asia and Europe after. No mention of any other releases. Sticking with the Nexus S.
The phone is also quite ugly.
Nexus S. I'll probably have it for a year, at the least.
Why would I hold off on the NS in hopes of the Star being compatible w/ Tmobile 4G?

Have Android 2.3 dual core support?
no support
Hi Guys
As per my understanding, android 2.3 does not support dual core CPU, so why would LG release a dual core CPU hardware on android !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
According to AndroidEncyclopedia.com:
This new series of multi core processors destined for the smartphone market will be sampling in the first quarter of 2011 and will enter mass production sometime in the second half of the same year. This comes really as a bit of a disappointment really as the Tegra 2 processor is already out and is kind of setting new standards on every test which has the ability to optimally use the multi-core technology. The biggest inconvenience the processors really faces is the lack of proper Android support when it comes to recognizing the multi-core architecture and thus using it to its full potential.

I heard that about Honeycomb, not Gingerbread.
I love tech (especially the rapid growing mobile space) but i'd rather not have the very first dual core phone on the market. i'd rather wait and see how the OS (honeycomb and up), app devs, etc utilize it AND i'd wait to hear back about battery life.
LG and Android may really become a big player in 2011: http://phandroid.com/2010/12/16/exclusive-lg-b-android-phone-super-slim-super-bright/
Nexus L 2011, anyone?
Wow that phone looks insane. Having said that, it would be better if it was an official Google device. If it isn't I'll be sticking to the Nexus S for the foreseeable future until the next one releases.
Dual cores sound nice and all but single cores are beginning to be perfected and can really run android without any hitches, upgrading to a dual core just to have one wouldn't really give us a huge boost in performance yet.
Finally I can play Crysis on my Phone with Ultra settings. Really? Its cool and all but how fast do they want your apps to open up and your angrybirds to load up on a freaking phone, In my opinion its over kill never the less cool I guest.
Does anybody know if/when Android 2.4 will be released for the Atrix? I'm eager for this as it should bring support for dual core phones (eg the atrix)

Nobody knows. Nobody at Motorola has really said anything about it. I believe there was a rumor of possibly late summer or sometime in the fall... but who really knows.
And... i don't know if i'd say "will bring support for" in regards to dual-core phones. "will bring better support for", maybe. Supposedly the version of Froyo currently used on the Atrix has been modified to support dual core.
I am guessing we will sooner get it by bypassing the bootloader than motorola and at&t pushing updates on a phone they have wrong holed since the beginning.

wait so i spent money on dual core that is not even supported?
It is supported, but Gingerbread is better for multi core.
Motorola as recompiled the kernel with SMP enabled, so we are using the dual core in froyo for all the apps that we install that supports dual core.
This is all sort of misleading. Yes, we have an SMP, preemptible kernel so AFAIK system tasks and others will run while our system is going, things should be generally smoother. Most apps will execute on one core, as I think the Dalvik VM is not multi-core aware.. although single-threaded apps will not get an automatic performance boost from 2.3/2.4, when a multi-core aware Dalvik comes to us. However, the garbage collector thread will run on the other core, and apps which are programmed to take advantage of multiple cores will certainly run faster. So, even if we had a multi-core capable Dalvik today, it wouldn't be a huge performance boost until the rest of the ecosystem catches up. But yes, hopefully Motorola is getting us there soon! The MT870, a cousin of our MB860, is shipping in China with Gingerbread on it.
i spoke with some guys from motorola, they will release the 2.3 in the half year, because a lot of moto phones just got froyo now, so they are giving some time before lauch ginger, but it has been confirmed from moto workers, WE WILL HAVE GINGERBREAD !^^

Unless they put Star Trek teleporter technology in this thing I don't think they can OTA update the processor.
I do think they'll come out with a Tegra 3 tablet, I can think of no reason why they wouldn't. Considering it'd be more similar of a development environment than switching to OMAP or something. I also think that when it comes to touting your "platform" Nvidia sounds better than TI or Qualcomm. It's a more known brand, at least for high performance parts.
Perhaps the better questions would be, has Acer confirmed an Tegra 3 tablet? Is there any inkling that they will release anything close to the time that Asus does?

Hell, Nvidia already had Tegra 3 on roadmaps for 2012 before the first real Tegra 2 devices were out, if I wasn't such a must have guy I'd have waited. As it is I'll sell the Iconia or pass it to the g/f and get me a Tegra 3/Ice Cream Sandwich device when they hit. That's provided reviews don't show some other platform stomping Tegra 3, which is doubtful.

Tegra 3 seems inevitable for android tabs its like asking if the newest high end PC's will have the latest Intel cpus. When they will be released is another question. Since most tegra2 tabs were only released a few months ago I can't see anything replacing them for at least another year.

I would not say it's a dead certainty by any means, considering that the founder of Acer has expressed pessimism about the future of tablets. I'd post a link, but as a new user, i'm not allowed to do so - article title is "Ultrabooks and tablet PCs are short-term fads, says Acer founder" on digitimes.
For sure there will be Tegra 3 based tablets, but maybe not by Acer. I get the impression that the A500 might not be a huge commercial success for Acer.

To launch in October would mean the tabs would have to be in the functional prototype stage NOW. Even if Nvidia do manage to release the hardware this year (latest reports peg a CPU release for Q3 2011), it's REALLY unlikely anything will make it to market for several months afterwards.
Archos has a tablet coming out using a 1.5ghz TI chip. They already have the promo videos out. It looks to have improved performance. Seems to me that the 1ghz Tegra2 chip just isn't quite powerful enough for 3.1. I run stock with overclock kernel and keep my CPU set to 1.2ghz to get the kind of performance I need. I had a Viewsonic gTablet that I tried to run at 1.2ghz and it couldn't take the overclocking and would crash frequently. So far my A500 has handled the overclocking in all modes, including video play, Netflix, etc. Very pleased with that.
@jyams There are actually some benchmarks of systems using those chips, they're pretty decent performance wise.
http://www.anandtech.com/show/4511/archos-80-and-101-g9-tablets-the-fastest-tablets-in-the-world
Part way down that page is a small "preview" of two phones, one using the lower end TI chip, OMAP 4430 I think. It's compared to a phone using Tegra 2. The 1.5GHz part I think is 4460 however, so should have a bit more performance. It's only a couple of benchmarks, so take it with a grain of salt.
Another thing to consider, how is the dev community for other platforms? I've only owned one non-Tegra device and there was none for it.
Read it and weep guys, especially the projected price?
I'll wait for the new Win 8 tablets before I spend that kind of money on an ICS tab.

Ooops forgot.....it's Nov. 7th
I doubt it will be $846 here in the US. We don't pay VAT, plus prices are often inflated somewhat in the UK. I also hear there will be a 16GB model coming, so I expect that model will be somewhere around $500 in the US. I hope they don't make the mistake of pricing it out of the market, that would be silly at this juncture in the tablet wars. They also promised to have the supply/demand issues fixed this time. I have had my eye on this device and was kind of hoping to cash in some Best Buy rewards bucks when the 16GB model shows up here in stores, perhaps 1st quarter next year? Also hoping for some competition though...
I'm probably gonna rock this tablet for a long time unless value starts making android ports of their games.

If the Asus Transformer 2, 32GB ships for $499 that's just the price to pay for hopping on the Kal-el bandwagon first.

Sigh...
That comparison was written in June, which is also when the Gingerbread OTA was released for the Evo 4G, but it was not rootable yet and new Evo 4Gs weren't shipping with Gingerbread yet. A month prior to that we already had numerous Evo Shift ports (Gingerbread with Sense 2.X) and about the same time we got Evo 3D ports (Gingerbread with Sense 3.0) from a leaked pre-production image.
The Evo 4G model is over a year old. Gingerbread wasn't released then. It's a Froyo phone. Why you insist on attempting to correct me about a phone that I own and use is beyond me.

The Evo 4G model is over a year old. Gingerbread wasn't released then. It's a Froyo phone. Why you insist on attempting to correct me about a phone that I own and use is beyond me.

Did they releasing new version once a week? There's already many variants for this devices. Lets say, E300S, E300K, E300L, E330S, i9500, i9505, S4 mini, S4 active, S4 camera and now i9506 with better snapdragon 800? Hell. Yeah. Sammy.

theyre pushing the boundaries already, they must have known that the snapdragon 800 was going to be released soon when they released the s4
they could have waited instead of releasing a hundred variants
now early adopters are stuck with slower, more expensive versions of the same device(kinda since you can always buy the new one but its still a double expense)

Yap thats not practical. Just, why samsung? Are you too greedy? Why so many version? If the S4 comes with just one variant and that is packed with snapdragon 800 and adreno 330, even for international version, that would be great.

Exactly, it even would have been easier to sell millions of them without having to bother with extra hardware(failed octa, snapdragon 600), less expense=more money samsung should know this

Yup, these are pain in the ass, sh*tty strategy from samsung marketing planner. 4+4 exynos, snap600, snap800, and when tegra 4 is released then S4 i9510 will available too? Lol

Every Company wants to fill their own pocket ...not costomer's...
So never think any company tour own...
..
Especially Samsung
Its great news for some...who didnt buy s4...and sorrow for other who already bought s4...and Samsung will give reason that we have exchange scheme so trade s4 with new s4
So never dependant or fanboy of any company or device

Same feelings. I feel cheated.. I showed my support to Samsung.. Purchased SGS4 I9500 on the very first day despite of thinking about expensive price.. And later they came up with all those variants..
Neither they are releasing documentation for Exynos nor doing tremendous work in fixing bugs we are facing.. I would say, I will never ever go with Samsung again..

Now that you mention it, i wouldnt be as offended if i could install CM on my 9500 lol, damn samsung and their sources

There's really no need for an S4 with Snapdragon 800 and Adreno 330 (i9506).
Sure on paper it may perform better than the current S600 version, but will we notice in real life usage? Probably not.
The original Galaxy S4 S600 variant is more than enough hardware to run anything we throw at it, at least for the next year.
So be happy with with your S4 and just wait till the S5 is released, this will be even better again than i9506 version.
And so the cycle continues. This is simply technology for you.

Exactly.. If I get good after sale service from Samsung. I am more than happy of for that.. Samsung sucks in maintaining public relations and keeping promises.. They are liars, cheaters.. That's what I know. I am Samsung user since SGS1 days.. I know they never kept promises. They hate us (people over XDA)

IMO Samsung is doing this to keep up the competition with the recently released HTC One.
Their very first S4 may have been better in terms of specs but those who used HTC One and S4 in real life knew the difference and knew that HTC One was way better.
Therefore, they are trying to win this competition by releasing another variant of this device with better specs and also trying to reason the price.
But a word of advice to Samsung. There are not many people who know that there are so many variants of a single device. People just come in at a mobile store and ask for a S4. They seriously do not mention a particular variant no.
So Samsung, plz stop sh***ing around and plan on releasing better mobile phones like HTC one and not some plastic mobile with ground breaking specs thrown in which are not 100% compatible with each other.

To be specific, Every variant (except minis) of SGS4 has performed very very well against HTC One in terms of performance, battery life and camera too..
The competition is not HTC One.. They already are way way ahead than HTC One in terms of sales (5m vs 20m)..

Slower versions? Slower where.? In antutu and quadrant? Come on guys, wake up, benchmark is not the end of the road. Be happy with the devices you get with your hard earned money.
Samsung is not the only player in market doing this, HTC and Sony are doing the same. Sony is now preparing honami and HTC is preparing a 5 inch HTC one which will make the xperia z and HTC one owners moan. And within a matter of time we will see devices with 5420 which will beat them all, the cycle goes on

im going to get a phone i want htc one but here in my country its damn expensive , no ads for it compared with s4 and iphone , and you cannot find anywhere cases for it and its not popular but i think its better than s4 .... So i changed my mind and i was intending to get i9505 and this **** have come now but it would be expensive and i say to all s4 owners your phones is extremely fast comapred to its competitors and dont give a **** for samsung as i see this phone an un-needed upgrade and why they dont pack sd800 in note 3 and speed it up then pack it in next year's s5 (***k samsung)

Youre right, speed is not that much of an issue as all versions are really fast but still...
And what about updates? How long will they take now that there are so many S4 running amok

Htc and sony are releasing a 5+ inch devices (phablets) to compete with note 3 so they wouldnt moan just like s and note
I am sure the life span of updates for SGS4 (I9500) will be much shorter than any other device in high end Galaxy lineup Only around 20-25% of SGS4 devices are I9500. I am worried about future updates. That's why I am vouching for either CM port or something like that
