[DISCUSS] HD2 Safe Mode - HD2 General

Hi all
Last night my phone went into "safe mode" - it will only run basic apps etc now - not anything additional loaded on there. It is running NAND Nexus 2 Gingerbread.
Through reading, I worked out what is causing it - I went for a long bike ride in the wet on Sunday and must have got some water damage to the central "windows" button.
As such, it thinks that button is pressed at startup which puts it into "safe mode".
Bugger.
Symptoms:
Phone says "safe mode" in bottom left corner of the screen
Menu button will not work in any apps
Phone cannot enter tri-color boot loader screen
Phone flashes on MAGLDR menu, doesn't allow down movement and will return to first option if you press up then let go
Just posting this up for some info for people that may have the same issue. Will try using a hand dryer on it, taking it apart etc and see what happens.

SoftBricked Tmobile UK G1 ?

Firstly i would like to say hello and happy new year.
Now to the point,
Yesterday I dropped my phone in the snow and it got a bit wet
I assumed it would be ok.
Few mins after this a received a call and couldn't hear the caller so i suspected that there was water in the receiver so i took my phone apart and tried to dry it out (even though i couldn't see any water in it)
The thing is when i put the phone back together it came to the bootloader and said no image file on a gray screen
I assumed that it was looking for a Dreaimg.nbh file
I put one on my sdcard and attempted to recover the device.
This looked to have worked initially but when i restarted the phone i was presented with a bootloader screen again with the red, green and blue bands saying "serial0".
I assumed that the device was looking for a ROM and couldn't find it so it took me back to the bootloader.
I went online and downloaded a rc8 update.zip
I restarted the phone again and went in to recovery mode (where you update with the update.zip) pressed "alt+l" then Alt+w and then alt+s to flash with my latest update. and tried to reflash the phone from recovery by pressing Alt+s this seemed to work initially but failed after the 2nd restart the process went like this.
Turn on phone press home key
I get a triangle ! and a phone so pressed Alt+l (to bring up the options)
pressed Alt+w to wipe the phone
pressed Alt+s to apply the update.zip
waited,
phone said it was done and press Home+back to reboot.
when i pressed Home+Back before the phone rebooted a message came up saying that it was flashing the radio (is this normal)
Phone rebooted to the G1 screen ]
Then on to a screen with the Microchip on it with a yellow and orange arrow stayed on there for a while and then rebooted again to the g1 screen then on to a screen with a status bar and a package with an arrow within a second the phone reboots and we go back to the bootloader.
This is all my phone will do
Please can some one help me with this I am an IT professional but this has me beat.
Thanks in advance Emove
I am stuck with the same issue. This happened a day after i split some soda on keyboard.
The G1 is auto powering in fastboot mode even though the camera button isnt stuck.
Sometimes I manage to turn on the phone it works fine until it has the problem again and it drains the battery.
Mine in other respects is fine I was hopeing that my problem was fixable but no one has replied with any real comments that may help so i suspect that that no one knows what the problem is.
I would suspect that you have a short somewhere on the board. Soft drinks leave a residue on the PCB when they dry so maybe thats your problem.
your options are to deal with it as it is.. have it cleaned professionaly (t-mobile/htc) or if your brave/stupid like me try and service it your self. cleaning with alcohol should do it no harm if its already on its way out.
i do have the service manual if you need it.

Stuck in safe mode

Ok now before the barrage of "learn to search BLAH BLAH BLAH" hear me out. I have searched. Repeatedly. My G1 is stuck in safe-mode, and my menu button next to the scroll ball doesn't work. No damage has been done to the phone, or any use outside normal. It hasn't even been rooted.
I tried holding down the menu button while booting. Both menu buttons. Data reset, and all that ****. Nothing seems to work. So please, will someone help me fix this.
inb4 get a new phone because I already did that twice this year.

When you say "safe" mode are you referring to the recovery? or fastboot? Do you have root? Have you recently wiped and flashed?
I mean safe mode. It says "Safe Mode" in the bottom left of the screen. I didn't anything to this phone. no root, no flash, no wipe. The battery died, then when i connected it to charge and turned it back, its in safe mode and my menu button doesnt work.

Yeah sounds like a menu button malfunction. You could try and take it apart and see if its like stuck.. but you may be SOL.
I've got the same issue with my G1 running CM6.1. But unlike OP I know exactly what happened. My 4-year old son poured a bucket of water on me while he was helping me wash the car... Water got in the phone so I immediately removed the battery to prevent damage - guess I was too late.
Anyway, the MENU on the front of the phone is the only thing that doesn't work. It must be shorted because the phone keeps booting up in Safe Mode. However, I can still get to the menu if I use the MENU key on the slide-out keyboard.
Is there ANY way to fix this by ignoring the front MENU button completely? Could I remap the functionality of the button like I remapped my Nook Color volume buttons? I really appreciate ANY suggestions, thanks!

[Q] Safe Mode? What is it? How to get out of it?

I am having all sort of trouble with my newly flashed G1, the main issue being the keyboard only has 4 keys that work after a HBOOT flash back to stock..
It boots up to the google log in screen ok but in the bottom left corner it says 'safe mode'. I can find nothing in the G1 forums about it but one of the other forums (myTouch) mention it is where it loads a minimum amount of apps or something if booted while holding the menu button down.
Anyways, is there anyone who knows how to get out of safe mode? And why it might be in there in the first place?
figured it out. ( I searched xda using google )
hold the red and green buttons down together.
Some people say the menu button sticking causes this 'safe mode' to occur.
unfortunately my keyboard still only has 4 keys that work even without the safe mode issue.
edit: And upon rebooting its back in 'safe mode'. I would assume that means my menu button is stuck down? I wonder if that is why my keyboard is having issues too. I will have to tear it apart now.
hmmm yes good idea.. clean it all out than tell me what happens i will help you out from there
I think this safe mode isnt save at all...
One of the rep's told me to turn off the phone. Take out the battery for 20 sec. then reinstall and turn on. Should be out of safe mode.

[Q] Please help me

As suggested, starting a new thread.
Hello,
Straight to the point, Rooted UK Atrix, running 2.3.4. no other MOD OR rom or anything, i like motoblur.
Stupidly Used Bloatfreezer to freeze 'home' without having another launcher to return to. Can't use the phone now. Trying to reset (hard or soft i do not know the difference) and the phone reads ''fastboot'' then i toggle down using volume - to android recovery and the phone is coming up with starting rsd protocol x2 and nothing else (using the power + & - methods).
If i leave my phone to just boot it resides on a white screen teasing me with noises of logging in but i cannot see anything.
I'm really lost to be honest, i have no idea what to do and i am not good with terminology either (adw, flashboots, cm7 i have no idea what they are).
I know there are sooo many threads with different answer's so that is why i am starting a new thread.
To factory reset using recovery...
1.Power off the phone, press and hold volume down button, press power button.
2.Screen will come up with "Fastboot", press Vol down key to cycle through choices until you get "Android Recovery", press Vol up key
3.Wait for the "triangle ! / Android" screen then release the volume down button
*4.Tap on bottom right corner of the screen (may take a few times). a menu will come up
5.Tap on "wipe data/factory reset", and press OK. Another Confirmation screen will come. Press Yes and OK
6.After userdata is cleared, the "reboot system now" option will be highlighted by Default. Press OK.
7.Phone will reboot to initial setup MOTOBLUR screen.
NOTE/If on Android 2.3.4 then replace step #4 with pressing both Volume buttons at the same time. Also, use the Power button to activate the highlighted option instead of looking for the OK.

Can you get to android market via your computer? If so go to it, log in, find a launcher and install to your phone. Once rebooted to the phone, it *should* give you a choice or just automatically choose the new launcher. What does double tapping your home button bring you too? I was able to find my alternative launcher by moving around via that.
sounds like ya have frozen system files
prolly be easyest to unlock bootloader and push a custom rom to it (they work better than stock anyway
Yes i did freeze the home app.
I really mean thanks to those replied. Unfortunately i have tried the first suggestion but it doesn't let me get to step 3 with the triangle, fast boot - android recovery - can't fast boot 2 etc can't get passed that.
i have just plugged it in the Laptop, taking sim out, and it has started! i thought it was broken!! but unfortunately not 'home' yet...
SO it is at the motoblur login screen, should i log in? press factory reset? Any suggestions?
I'm not sure how to push an app straight to phone so i can install a launcher...
we're nearly there guys!
In addition to what Robkort said a few posts up ^^^ to get into the recovery on 2.3.4 you may have to scroll down once you see fastboot, until you see "Android Recovery" and press vol up - when the android dude comes up, if tapping the bottom right corner doesnt get you into recovery, press BOTH volume buttons at the same time.
It is now up and working with me just simply plugging it in, running moto sync, logging in to market from laptop and sending the launcher app..
Wifi was enabled luckily before i froze home, so when i pressed log in it went 'error' then launcher pro just popped up so now i think i just unfreeze home, turn it off, put my sim in and fingers crossed..
wish me luck!
Yahooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
It's worrying how much happier i am now that i am back on top with my phone working. Pretty dependant we become!
All my widgets, and motoblur have gone, and some writing is in a different language :/ universal inbox is not there either.
Still Thanks for all the suggestions!
I suggest this thread should be 'FROZEN' or just stay open if anyone ever freezes 'home' without having another launcher installed.
I'm glad i didn't need to flash anything, put other ROMS on, hard reset losing everything, solved pretty simple luckily.

Stuck in Recovery after messing with Simulate Secondary Display

Hi everyone! So I'm pretty stupid and I was messing around with the developer options (even though I knew I shouldn't). I clicked Simulate Secondary Display and chose one of the options (not sure which one) and right after the screen went all black, I got scared and tried to reset it but for some reason it went into Recovery. I tried the "Reboot to System" option like 50 times and this is what happens: Most of the times it just goes back to the Recovery Main Menu, but some times for some reason it seems like the phone starts normally (still black screen tho) and I can manage to start the camera (by pressing - volume 2 times) and I can actually take pictures! Only for a few minutes because then it restarts itself again and I'm back at the Recovery Menu. Tried Fastbooting (even idk what it is) but it just stays on the fastboot screen with the russian bunny trying to fix the Android robot?? PLEASE HELP!! :crying:
