A(nother) Random Battery Fix!!! [Updated 25/9] - HD2 Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting an

Hi all,
I am running mango 7720 (v2) - radio is still 5.69 for 2 weeks now.
Have installed both radios 2.15 and 2.12 without any luck in regards to the camera trick. it worked upon a fresh format (-5ma), few apps later i am at -74ma. Battery lasts 9hrs 3g on, barely any use!!! dropped over 90% overnight.
I am aware that 5.51T/5.51 radio fixes this problem but i am waiting until XBmod releases the radio package without the need to format the phone.
I am running radio 2.12 for a few days now with horrendous battery life, until i came across something random.
Now, my drain is at -4/5ma and it lasts well over a day with 3g on. This is what i did (tested for 2days and loving it!):
Connect to wifi, turn off phone, turn phone on, do camera trick, turn wifi off, turn airplane mode on, then off and there you go!
Have tried doing the trick with/without reboots/wifi/airplane mode touched, - all failed!!! How weird, yes?
Hope this helps others....
Update 1 (14/9): Upon further testing (with just 3g on), i have been able to simplify the trick. Turn off your phone, turn it back on, put airplane mode on, then off, DONE! (no wifi, or camera trick needed!!).
How i test drain: I open HTC battery tool and put the phone in standby (ensuring i have reasonable 3g reception, as poor reception is an absolute battery killer on its own!!!). I put the phone back on after 3-4 minutes and i observe battery drain.
Readings: Upon restart -80ma, airplane mode on -8ma, airplane mode off (3G on) -8ma!
Geez, i love HTC, Mango and the people on xda that made this combination possible!!
Update 2 (25/9): For the last week, i went back to radio rom 2.15 (better reception for me) and now my battery is normal (-8ma) WITHOUT doing a thing..no battery trick, airplane mode, nothing. I do not think it is due to rom 2.15, as it started doing this while i was on 2.12. I have also installed another dozen apps or so. Seems as though mango just needed time or something, as ridiculous as that sounds. I have soft reset my phone a number of times and went straight to the battery tool, with 3g on, and battery loss is fantastic.
Go figure...

it's working only with 2.12 + 5.15t radios or with any? I have 2.15 + 5.15t and i can't see a difference in my battery life. Still huge drain.

I have 2.12 and 5.69, has been working a treat now for a number of days, with a number of soft resets. I guess to answer your question, it will depend on others testing my 'fix', since i cant.
Huge drain seems only to be a problem with 5.69. How huge is your drain on 5.51T? What is your battery current at? What do you have on (3g, wifi, etc.)?

Battery test
Battery current after standby -12ma
5.15T software radio
WI-Fi on, BT off
with camera fix
I am happy with that, except my battery always has been a bit duff.
Edit; Well done for finding fix though! Will test after Radio.cabs arrive

Poor Battery Life with Radio 1.09

I updated my Orange SPVM5000 to the 1.09 radio, and it seems to have had a bad effect on my battery life.
When there is a low signal it seems to drain the battery very fast, dropping 20% in half an hour.
Is this a known side effect of this radio version?
Any ideas on what I could do to improve things - I have searched for battery and 1.09 and trawled through the many posts that are returned to no avail.
I have Orange ROM 1.30.90 WWE, and ExtRom 1.30.174 WWE
(I haven't altered anything else, just the radio, so that seems to be the cause of sudden battery drain)...

I have a grudge as well:
Where there's low reception (or may be - not sure though - I've been using Wi-Fi for a while and then TURNED IT OFF officially) -- the phone gets 100% drained overnight...
During the daytime it's Okay, and the battery loses just a few %, 10-15% during the day... doing Bluetooth ActiveSync and all.
I so far can blame only Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or Telephone (whatever constitutes "radio").
I think I may look for that elusive application that could help log battery levels, to identify the culprit... I'm really pissed off with this already, and 1.11 reports for the UK aren't very soothing either... Gotta understand why the Hell does it discharge so quickly (XDA II does never discharge that much... and deffo not discharge to 100% ever. But I gave it to my missus now.
Weird... I found my upgrade to 1.09 improved the battery life :? I also turn on flight mode (At the point where I'd turn a normal phone 'off') before i go to sleep - this helps with the battery also
One thing that I am experimenting with is that it seems to happen when I put the device to sleep by closing the lid. If I press the power button first then it seems to behave normally.
This may be a complete red herring, but for the moment my battery life seems stable if I follow that option.

Closing the lid only turns the back-light off - the PDA still stays on... This would explain your lack of battery life. I always hit the power button when I've finished with the PDA
AFAIK the PDA is always on. With the previous ROM closing the lid and pressing the power button were equivalent actions, at least in terms of subsequent battery drain.
It is probably a red herring, and more likely something to do with trying to get a GPRS signal and hold on to it...

The phone is always on - the power button puts the PDA function to sleep however (At least, that's how i understand it)

battery drain problem after dropping the phone

hello,
I dropped the 8282 a while ago, then it started to drain battery so so quick. About %1 every 2-3 mins.
Even i switch off wifi gsm and switch it to airplane mode, it keeps on draining madly.
I installed another firmware to check if it is smthing software but still same results.
Physically all functions are working..including g-sensor etc. What can cause the problem.
Ps: i tested with another brand new battery if it is about battery but no, still same results.

[Q] Battery drains so quickly on hd2!!!

hi i am currently running the latest version of android on my sd card-(americanandroid 4-2-11)...i noticed i only get about 3-4 hours of battery life on my phone with wifi, bluetooth off and screen timeout after 30 seconds..i have no active widgets on homescreen and the battery is brand new...what do you think is the problem???
ps.-- i am running a stock tmobile rom with radio 2.08...
SD Builds have bad battery usage, that's a fact. You can always try to flash a newer radio onto your device to improve battery usage, but I don't know if this is possible without problems because of your sim-locked phone. Solution to your simlock:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=612580
" -B) If you can NOT download stock 3.14 ROM from HTC site for your phone S/N
--This post(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8945325&postcount=28077) by the user oliverweidel for "branded" phone flashing steps and this post(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9614007&postcount=30954) "Gold Card Experience" by venomhtchd2 "
I also think the battery of your phone is getting "lazy". So you might want to switch to NAND roms (go for gingerbread as it has the best battery life) and maybe get a new battery for your phone.

I ran the AmericanAndroid[3/20/11] and had over 26 hours of battery life among which 18 was of heavy use. I had brightness on minimum(NO AUTO), Screen Time-out was 1 minute, WIFI always on since I don't use my HD2 with a data plan, Auto-Sync, 2G active on mobile network instead of 3G/H.
The reason how I achieved this was because of proper battery calibration. There are a few factors that affect it. The most important ones being the percentage your battery level was at when you first booted into Android how you charge your phone.
Here is what I did to "calibrate" :
1.Charged my phone to 100% for 6 hours straights while it was turned ON.
2. Power off the phone while it is still plugged in and left it to charge for another 15 minutes.
3. Unplugged, removed battery, pressed and held the power button on phone for 5 seconds.
4. Turned the phone back on and once I saw the Boot screen(Android), I plugged it in.
5. Deleted the battery stats file using the following in Terminal Emulator :
Code:
su
(Hit enter)
rm data/system/batterystats.bin
(Hit enter)
Once that's done, use your phone as much as you can. to drain the battery. Let your phone die by itself. Once it dies, keep turning it on until it doesn't turn on anymore. then plug it in and boot into Android as fast as you can. If you repeat this one more time, you should see significant improvement in your battery life.
This "tutorial" isn't mine. I read some of around here itself and found some of it on other forums dealing with battery care. All credit goes to those OPs of those TUTs
same problem here
i would appreciate if someone could explain to me why my battery drops off like this and my signal is so intermitent

Battery tool/Battery Current: - 138 !!!
Yuki back to the future rom.
My battery only last 10 hours standby! by end of the day, the battery is completely dead! Tried the camera trick, but this version of rom had green button mapped to voice dail so just went to camera tool, then go to video and
autofocus. Does not seems to help.
Anyone have solution? With this kind of battery life, I would have to revert back to wm6.5

Mine is the same way. Just a few minutes (10 to 15) doing things on mine from a fully charged battery and it goes down 20%.
I think it has more to do with magldr than the ROM, though. My other HD2 is using a cLK version of Tytung Android and it is the actual first Android build I've ever used that has acted like a stock ROM. The battery life is great and in standby it stays charged really well. Not so with the magldr version. In standby with the same ROM booted with magldr, the battery drops quickly.
There are people here experimenting with different radios to try and get the battery drain down. Both the hardware and software radios and different combinations of both.
As changing the hardware radio is easier at the moment than the software one (you have to re-flash and update to mango), you may want to try that.
Good luck
I have the same configuration but mine works fine (after doing the camera trick the battery last more than 24 hrs.). Maybe it is due to the battery lifetime, capability, quality or any other hardware issues.
i dont seam to recall haveing any battery issues on yuki v1 but after i update to v2 i strted experianceing fast battery drain auto focs trick with camira dosent seam to work ither i updated all the way to 7200 i was still not happy about the battery drain tehn i install teh device provisioning and isv beta clean up through zune hopeing to fix my batter issues it didnt i gave up then i wanted to get wireless radio and installed DEV_FM_ANTENNA_INTERNAL.cab and now its even worce i littery wach 17 hr's of battery life dran in 7 min's

Everytime you start the phone or after a reset, you have to do the camera trick.
Also, when you take a picture... before you shut down the camera, do the trick again.
After the MANGO installation, also download and install 2.12 Radio. That seems to be keeping the drain down a little. After I installed the 2.12 radio AND keeping an eye on the camera trick is done, the phone lasts for 1 day and 9 hours. (It's been 1 day and 10 hours now, 11% left...)
update 2.12 rom works!
update. I flashed with 2.12 rom, then did a factory reset, then camera trick.
Now 16 hours after the charge, made a few phone calls and some light internet surfing, I still have 48% battery. This is a remarkable contrast from yesterday. Don't know if this is due to 2.12 or the camera trick, but the combination of the two definitely worked. Now I ca keep my Mango
Thanks all for the help

I also flashed 2.12 earlier today and have just now done a reset (in the "About" menu) and am going to see if it helps with the BL. Mine was down to about 45% after just probably 3 or 4 hours...in standby. Not being used at all.

Regarding flashing the 2.12 radio and then resetting it, something helped. I won't say flashing the 2.12 radio helped because I flashed it first and later I did the reset. My HD2 still drained faster than an old Chrysler sucking gas through a straw. But after the reset, it is still at about 85% since last evening about 8:30PM. It is currently 1:11PM the next day. So that gives me about 17 hours on this one charge. And no, I am not exaggerating. My previous post lists the time I flashed it to 2.12...actually before I made the post. And I just now took another look at it....about 5 minutes ago. It hasn't been used at all during that time period and, in fact, I haven't even set it up yet....no wifi, no syncing of any kind, not even signed into my account. After resetting it, I simply set it aside and did nothing with it. So lets see how it does after I begin using it again...syncing, turning on wireless and all.
My current is -318!!! And I only have 3G on. I tried the camera trich and it does nothing. Any other suggestions.

I'll help.
Put your HD2 in bootloader screen by powering off first, then press and hold the down-volume button and tap the power button. Hold the down-volume button till the red/green/white screen appears.
Then connect your HD2 to your PC and at the bottom is should say USB once Windows sees it.
Once you have the appropriate radio file downloaded and unzipped, open its folder and click the "LeoCustomRUU.exe" file. You may need to right-click and open it with "Run as Administrator".
Go through the checks and it will flash the radio. Once finished, disconnect your HD2 for your PC. It will reboot and your new radio is flashed.
Regarding the battery usage of my HD2 after a reset, I can report that I'm now seeing above normal battery life. Earlier today, around 1PM, I set up my HD2 and established all my accounts...3 email accounts, FB, Twitter with default syncing...and enabled wifi. All of the usual stuff I normally use except the installation of all my previous apps.
Currently the battery is exactly 70%, according to the built-in battery saver menu in the settings. It has not been charged since yesterday about 8:30PM. That's approaching 24 hours since a charge.
EDIT - I took a picture of the current battery condition. It shows time since last charge and time left on charge plus the current charge level.

I have been using the camera trick, but I don't really have faith in it that it is doing anything useful. Once I see how far this first charge will go, I will do more experimenting like not using the camera trick. Right now I want to leave my HD2 exactly like it is...not using it, just leaving it in standby...till the battery dies out.
It's actually not all that good for standby battery life. Being in standby, it should last much longer than the projected 54 hours on this one charge. My iPhone will last longer than a week in standby. My Inspire and other HD2 with Android lasts about the same as this, though.
And the reset I speak of is in the "Settings" > "About" screen. At the bottom of the screen is the "reset your phone" rectangular box.

Damn, that's nice I manage 1 day and 18 hours on a full charge, according to the battery saver app. As soon as I go to work I use the internet a little (Twitter/Facebook/IE). By the time I get to the office (40 minutes), it dropped a good 30%.
When i'm not using the phone, it's good, 1% per hour or so. As soon as I start using it a little, it goes down like an elevator on meth.
What I also noticed, is that when the signal is not very good, the battery will drain up to 6/7% per 30 minutes... i have no idea what that's about.

[Q] HD2 / WP7 / battery life (Mango/Tango)

Hi,
I use ROM from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=953078
When I use Mango verion (up to 1.26 (build 8107)). Battery life is ok (up to 9mAh).
When I tried to use Tango (2.00b, 2.00b2, 200b3), battery consumption is about 40mAh with the same settings as mango ...
Whant can I set to reduce consumption?
(BT off, Location off, WiFi off, data off or email after 15minutes, 3G off, camera trick used)
Thx,
Petr
How I can check usage battery ? (mAh)
you can use HTC Battery tool from this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10762409&postcount=64
Battery current - is this what I am looking for ?
yes, barrety current ... .
if you can check it, leave phone locked few minutes, unlock it and check values.
...and better when status (current battery) is lower or higher ?
if its not on charge then the lower it is the better, if its on charge youd hope it was increasing the available charge
Hi,
please, do you have any experience or knowledge about problem from first post?
(I checked I have problem with BT HF connection too - in tango. I need pair HF again and again.
If I use Mango, connection with BT HF is very quick and I paired devices one time only)
Thx.
Petr

Your battery drain is very high. Check if you have apps running in the background. Are you using WiFi?
Check its charged, it may report high drain but if the battery is half full but showing its full then it can appear to drain twice as fast, also the backlight is the biggest draw of power which doesn't work right,, im amazed its fallen on deaf ears when brought up
Sent from my HD2 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App

(Mango)
BT on settings is perfect (-5mA), until I connect and disconnect to BT HF ...
If I disconnect, battery is -45mA whole time.
If I set BT to off, battery is -5mA again ...
I have bad 3G signal .. so 3G off is better than 3G on FOR ME.
(Tango up to 2.00b3)
Battery was -40mA for all time ...
extended battery 2300mAh
Is there a rom that works on an extended battery 2300mAh ? I apologize for my language
Tango 2.00b5 - drains battery like a HELL, as other roms too... I don't know those guys were talking about when saying up to 4 days bat life on this forum, but no matter what rom I use, it's less than 1 day bat life without calls, wi-fi and data! With wi-fi - less than 1 hour. Why this crap still can't be fixed since first rom was ported?? It's completely no point to use WP7 in this case.
I use last Mango ...
If I don't use phone, few days (3-5) phone "using" is possible
(BT off, wifi off, Location off, data on, 3g off (bad signal for me), email (15minutes), camera trick after reboote )
If I use phone, 1-2 days are without problem ...
I tried to use Pdaimatejam Rom, but I had problem with restarting and phone temperature ...

Same, wifi, bt off, downgraded roms, tried camera tricks, etc. even bought a new battery, still same...
