Battery issue

I have read some threads about htc devices and their battery- life and behaviour and i didn't really read about the problem i'm having.
The device (topaz) is about 2 weeks old and i'm fairly satisfied with the batteryperformance. Playing with it for about ten minutes would make my battery drop about 5% which is very reasonable.
But lately - speaking of 3 days - i have this weird issue; the battery drains like hell; when i send 1 text message the device can drop 5-6%; which is quite much and absolutely a heavy fall suddenly, compared to what it used to be.
Also, when charging the battery, from 0-70% goes very fast, like about 10 minutes. The other 30% go slow.
I configure the device like this:
- GSM mode
- No wifi
- No bluetooth
- no data connection
System: beam is switched off, data only goes through 'my work network' and band is switched to GSM (which means no 3G - again)
My experience happens when i have no other applications (like GPS) running, and I also have G-light enabled (polling 100ms, mostly 40% backlight, and i have this running since day 1)
I did switch my rom quite often; but I always performed hard-reset and battery calibration afterwards.
installed in current order:
- Touch InCall
- Tomtom navigator
- ageye g-light
- TD2 tools (large cache settings)
- Taskbaricon 6.5.3
- Zenyee disable HTC messaging
Roms used: Dutty R6-R7
Radio: 4.49.25.17, 4.49.25.57

There are some rather aggressively power hungry ROMs and the culprit is mainly Touch flow/HTC sense.
Turn it off for a test and see if there is a difference!

Well, I do experience similar problem. My battery charges for 70% very fast and at 70% it seems to stay forever. (whole night) I haven't done anything to my phone yet. I have it just like it came from T-Mobile. I didn't install any additional application besides sbp backup. I do keep my memory running at around 40% all the time. I have Win6.1 and TF3D on. TF3D is T-Mobile customed, so not sure what manila it is based on.
Please, anybody, do you have other suggestion as what the problem may be?
I want to flash the ROM, yet with these issues I am still reconsidering. If it is faulty battery I would rather go and exchange it as it is still in warranty.

"Battery calibration is simply done by running it down completely until the phone shuts off by itself. Then remove the battery, wait 10 seconds, insert again, repeat. If the phone shuts off again in less than a few minutes you're done. Remove battery and hold power button for 1 minute, then insert battery. Don't switch on the phone. Plug the charger and recharge the battery fully until the green light is on. Then remove battery, hold power button for few seconds, insert it and switch on the phone..."

Here is a link on the Wiki regarding battery consumption.
With Li-Ion batteries it is not recommended to discharge completely as it is with NiCad every 30 cycles.
If you have flashed another ROM that has changed your radio ROM, i.e. you've flashed an official ROM, the Radio ROM will be your culprit for increased battery drain. A weaker radio will constantly have to search for the best network and thus use more battery.
For a few power saving tips;
1. Setup sync times instead of pushing emails.
2. Make sure your data disconnects after use (a few programs out there for that)
3. Set your power settings to turn device off at select times of inactivity
4. Increase your file cache size.
5. Enable auto screen lock

how do you enable auto screen lock? I'd rather not use TD2 Tools. is there any other way?

Battery dies very fast, how to monitor tasks better?

My battery on the HTC Pure went from 45% charge to 2% auto-shutoff within a matter of 1.5 hours without any usage on my part. In fact, I had rebooted it and not touched it since.
The thing has been dying a lot faster after I installed some programs from Marketplace. I'm wondering if they are doing background processes that zap its power or what.
Any recommendations on monitoring what's going on in the background???

You don't do this unless you want to damage the battery.

Exactly the same thing here, after installing some apps from Marketplace, the batt started to drain very fast. Don't know why yet. The apps installed are:
Mobeedo
Bing
Pocketnow
The Daily News
I've removed Mobeedo, The Daily News and Pocketnow just to test if they were doing something.

Fast battery discharge
I had this very same problem. I had it with WM 6.1 and the Pure. Both due to the same app. BING is your problem. If you have a memory card in your phone it causes it to be constantly accessed instead of just on demand such as with storing pictures from camera. This is a battery life killer. Ditch BING, remove your storage card, save what you want to a PC and wipe it. After that put your saved files back on the card and put back in phone. This should stop the battery drain issue. Hope this helps.
ALSO: Some people swear by the battery drain and charge thing...others do not. Use it if you like but without getting rid of BING or finding a way to keep it from accessing your memory card the difference you will see will be barely noticeable.

Battery life problem - solution

I was pondering possible reasons for the battery life problem that many of us are well aware of. Some peoples batterys will last a good day or two and then theres people like me who charge my phone in the morning and when i get home in the afternoon just to keep it alive and this is compared with people using the same rom. So i thought maybe there could be something to do with what the battery level is when the phone is rooted or a new rom flashed, and this process may reduce the battery cycle to a specific point. E.g. if i 1st root and load my new rom on my phone at 50%, when booted it could show 100% but its actually 50% than it should be. i have not tested this but im just putting it forward as an idea. if anyone does have the time to unroot, charge to 100% and then reroot their phone + custom rom and test the battery life could they please post their results here. No harm in trying ...
EDIT:It seems we have found a solution or alteast a way to greatly improve battery life by putting my random idea and the information from maxisma togethere.. here are the following steps:
1. When the battery is low e.g. 10% boot into recovery mode and wipe->battery data
2. Reboot and then drain the battery or let it die (turn on mobile network add the 'sync now' widget and keep syncing with the music on loud - works pretty fast)
3. Leaving the phone dead put it on charge and let it charge fully till the led indicates green (may take longer than normal)
4. UNPLUG!! the charger then boot the phone up and your battery life should be much better
TIP!! Remeber when changing and flashing new roms to unplug the phone from charge after you boot!
Hope this works for you all PM me for results (i went from 5-10% loss an hour to what is now about 1-2% max )

I've think it's more likely to do with how I charge my phone. If I charge the phone on my PC then the battery lasts me a day. On Sunday night I charged it with a mains charger, and a day and a half later I still have 40% left. That's with constant WiFi, Talk, calls and text messages.
Sometimes I'll do the same things mentioned above and the battery will be about 20% by the time I'm going to bed.
I could be very wrong, I'm no battery expert!

There shouldn't be any difference between PC charging and mains charging. The mains charger would utilise a transformer to give the same oomph as a PC gives...if not it'd fry the battery whilst charging.
Funnily enough, mains AC - DC transforms are a little choppy, although at such a low current it should be entirely negligible, but your PC's power supply should give a cleaner power output than the mains. Are you sure it isn't just a placebo, I still like to think charging my PSP via the mains rather than USB will do it quicker and last longer, since its dedicated

I've heard this theory before. I can't even begin to fathom how this could be possible. I hereby dismiss it as 'rubbish'.
Seriously though, I think it's far more likely to be related to the apps/widgets people are using after flashing the rom. The only thing that differs drastically from build to build is the different apps that people install.
Might be worth those with very crap battery lives sending me an hours worth of logcat. I can do an hours worth of logcat for myself (I never have battery issues), and compare the results.

He's partly right.
Android has a bug that when it's plugged into a charger while booting up, it'll report a higher battery status than it actually is.
This is preventing the phone from charging the battery completely.
So, a recommendation for you: Always unplug your phone from the charger before powering it up.

Since my last post ive drained my battery out. Kept the phone off and charged it fully. It did take longer than normal which could be a good thing. Ive booted it up about 15 mins ago and il post later/tomorrow about how the battery performs now.

I maybe jumping the gun a bit here but my phone says an up time of 1hour 27 mins. and normally its about an hour to about 5-10% of battery life and im sorry to say... im still on 100% WOO . I will still report how this lasts through to tomorrow, however i think theres enough evidence to suggest that the method stated earlier seems to fix what seemed to be a 'shortend battery cycle'. Anyone else with a short battery life i advise you to do the same asi have and please feedback to me with any results.. hope this has been helpful

I got escited too bratfink when I had 100% battery for ages while it was in sleep, then I dl'd a few progs from market and whoosh my battery started disappearing faster than expected. Try downloading a few things and you'll see your battry disappearing quicktime.
minfree or ramzswap off could be causing the issue.
I remember before I put that tweak on my phone (when it first came out), my battery life was amazing.
After I put the values in for init.d as from the forum page below:

the battery life started disappearing like mad! and this was on a modaco rom!
I think now that all the new 2.1 roms are including this minfree tweak it is causing this battery issue to be carried over. All attempts to reduce battery drain are not having as much effect as they could because of this.
I would like to try one of these new roms without the tweak but I do not have the knowhow to stop it. i.e. put the original init.d (or equivalent) for the the roms in place.
You might argue that the memory clearing has nothing to do with the battey drain, but what i saw was that it did on a modaco rom. I don't know whether it is the switching of ramzswap or the minfree settings ( i have a feeling it is both.
Can a chef cook one of their roms without the tweak and keep the original settings?

I'm on the BeHero v1.3.2,m will that command put my phone memory settings back to what they would normally be without the taskkiller?
If so can I just remove that file with OI file explorer as atm my laptop usb aint working (can't connect to phone properly, can only charge)

If you use Bluetooth, GPS*, or plug/unplug usb, CPU lock at 528Mhz and battery drain. This happend in all eris/roms.
I can see with Battery Graph while I sleep the battery is full, but no reason (only unlock to check time, kill alarms, read mail,...) the battery drains constantly. (no tweeter, no facebook, no GPS, no BT,..),

It's OK managed to fix the usb on my laptop.

I am currently performing the third step...i really hope this works cuz I am getting really really horrible battery life right now...I get only about 8 hours with ocassional use...like listening to music, browsing, taking pictures, sms.

I noticed that using the overclock widget (even with the lower clock option when screen is off) also eats some battery, it definitely reduced my usage time on Android 1.5.

I have the VillainRom 3.4 installed. Totally NO drain. I turned on Bluetooth and called several times. Battery drain is 8% in 12 hours .
I did not install any widgets. Pure standard custom ROM with newest radio.

I'm using HeroDroid and i had really bad battery drain problem. I'm a sort of heavy user and with bluetooth & gps permantly on, my phone had drained out by lunch time. After doing some tests, i have found that my problem was related to GPS. If i boot my phone with GPS off and left it at off, i get the same battery level usage as my original cupcake 1.5 ROM. Perharps you guys can try it and post your results.

I found that to help as well. In the last 3h10m it only went down by 4%. That's definitely a lot better than what I was getting before and with the previous ROM. I am using the new Autokiller and Overclock widget if that helps any and booted up with my GPS off and followed the steps mentioned in the first post.

hmm if its the case that the phone is "capping" the maximum amount of charge the phone can have then it should take longer to charge also
my battery life i kinda okay, lasts 10-12 hours with intermediate use, using battey graph app it took me 70 mins to charge from 40% to 100%
ill let it drain out tonight and see how long it takes for a full charge
it would be good if we could compare results with people with and without battery problems

Battery life and charging.

Just wanted to ask you guys, how your finding the battery life on this, i've have windows phone 7 on my htc hd2 for 3-4 days now. I barely get a days worth of charge out of it, without using the phone at all maybe 2-8 text messages a day.... 3g, mobile data, bluetooth and wifi all turned off until i actually need it.
Also am finding that the phone wont fully charge but only around about 75% then stops charging, anyone experiencing similar?
Was getting 4 days of battery life with windows 6.5, not complaining i understand its a different OS, just asking how other peoples battery has compared.

I doubt you can get 4 days battery life with whatever OS on HD2!

for those less computer literate, you can use droid explorer to do alot of the stuff thru a GUI. it also will set up adb for you.

the code that you type in to remove the battery stats is

now to properly condition the battery.
turn off the phone, plug it in, preferably overnight.
boot the phone up while still pluged in.
delete the batterystats.bin file ether thru adb or terminal
drain the battery fully, untill it powers down. wait a min or two and reboot it to completely drain it.
congrats... your phone now knows corect voltage values for 100% and dead.
Remember: Flashing a new Android build erases the battery stats, and automaticly rebuilds them based on voltages it see's .
ie: you need to recondition after each flash to get max battery life.
i use the "battery life" widget by curvefish to show me temp, voltage etc.

thanks have tried that previously when i used to use android and it worked quite well, this seems to be a windows phone 7 issue not general though .
I achieved the 4 days battery with the most basic enegry rom, no sense UI, turned off 3g, data connection, bluetooth, wifi... made sure it apps are closed when not used and ever setting turned off when not used

Battery Drainage

I've been using the Aria for 2 years now, and just 2 days ago I ran into an unexpected battery drainage problem.
1. When I am speaking during a call and not holding the phone close to my ear, the proximity sensor is not always triggered which causes the screen to stay on. While the screen is on, the battery drains 1% every minute (or every 30s). When I turn the screen off, the drainage is fine.
2. When I receive text messages (voicemails from my landline trigger a text message on my Aria), the battery drainage is very bad (1% per minute or 30s).
I never use data networks (turned off), background data and autosync are both turned off, gps is always off, wifi is always off, screen brightness is always custom at the 3rd lowest brightness setting. Basically, I try to conserve battery life and only use the phone for talking.
When I looked at battery usage, it was mostly due to Android System, Voice Calls, and Cell Standby.
I'm running the very old Liberty Froyo Rom (the version released like 2 years ago) and the default CM7 kernel. Also, I upgraded to the newest radio to fix this problem, but it didn't seem to make a difference. I don't think these things should be causing the problems since it only occurred 2 days ago while these things have been constant.
Any ideas what is going on or what I can do to make my phone last longer? Talking on the phone for 30 min from full charge takes my phone down to 25%...

honestly at this point my battery meter is completely wonky. the percents mean nothing now. i still get roughly the same battery life but it'll burn through large chunks of percentage in minutes but sit at a single percent for hours or active use.
i'd say try a new battery

If you've got clockworkmod installed, boot into recovery and wipe battery stats. If you're still experiencing this, try a different rom. I've been using CyanogenMod 7 for a long time with no issues.
If this fails, it's probably your battery. It might just be pooped out. If you get a new one always buy and OEM battery! Don't get anything off-brand.

after 2 years of use it's safe to assume that it's the battery and no necessarily the rom.

2 years with the same battery? old battery i say and is usually the life expectancy with it. i say you get a new battery. or try charging your battery all the way full. wipe the battery stats. then let your phone die, then completely recharge it all the way up again. that worked for me.

Battery life with ANY Android phone is hit and miss, but the Aria is notoriously terrible with it. However, there are several "tweaks" you could do to help it (note: I said help, not fix.). Beyond the basic system setting adjustments, I have found the "Die Hard Battery Calibrator" script by zeppelinrox to be helpful. Look for his V6 SuperCharger thread here on XDA to find it (as well as other useful scripts). Of course, the usual caveats apply: S-OFF, root, magic powers, etc.
