Hi Guys!
It's been a while since I been in the Andriod loop (last time was when I was dealing with X10a ; which was sold to a friend of a mine, whom damaged the USB slot, frying the entire MB, which is replaced and he is using it...)
Anyways, I got rid of my iPhone 4 for my cousin, who needed 4.3.3 jailbroken, with installous, cydia tweaks, etc. He is happy with it!
I am in the market for a new phone, I decided to check back on the Android world, and SII got my attention.
First of all, as I am in GTA (Toronto-Canada), where can I buy an unlocked, unbranded Galaxy SII phone? I have a hard time trusting kijiji or craiglist, etc.
Secondly, if the first option above is not available, can I buy the Bell Canada version, and have it unlocked and debranded? If so, where would I start in terms of debranding back to stock firmware & unlocking methods?
Third, I know an LTE version (1.5 Ghz processor upgrade, 4.5" screen, etc.) is coming out, probably end of the year to the beginning of the next year, should I just hold off? I don't mind buying the SII now, and get the LTE later.
Thanks.
You Can try Negrielectronics.com. They sell both the white and black model.
Great ... happy to know that
Karth,
From what I can determine, unlocking this phone is easy as pie.
There is an app for it.
You will pay a premium for an unlocked phone when it is apparently very easy.
Get it from Bell, best buy, Costco, wherever, and do the dirty work yourself.
Oh and Welcome Back!!! Android loves you, apple does not know you from a hole in the wall
Good decision. I recently sold my iphone4 and traded up to a galaxy s2 which is without doubt the better of the two.

The SGS2 is the best phone I have ever used. I actually enjoy surfing the web on it better than my home desktop. It's just as smooth on the web as the iphone 4 and with full flash running in the background! The batt life on the iphone 4 was the only thing keeping me with it until the SGS2 which has simular batt life as the iphone 4. It really is an amazing piece of hardware!

There's something wrong with your sgs2 then. When I had the iphone4 it barely made it to the evening.
Have maybe a 250% increase in battery life with the SGS2

The iPhone 4 is known to have a better battery life than the Galaxy SII. However, that doesn't make it any where near close to as outstanding as the Galaxy.
@op
To Unlock: Download Odin3 v1.85 from here.
Then download this kernel from here.
-unzip the above file and it will unzip itself to CF-Root-SGS2_ZS_OZS_KG2-v4.1-CWM4.tar (TAR File)
-Fire up ODIN and under 'PDA' browse to the above mentioned .tar file.
-Place your phone on download mode (either USB jig, or boot it up while holding vol down+home+power)
-once in download mode, plug in to the computer.
-everything should be default settings in ODIN,butmake sure repartition and flashlock IS NOT ticked.
-click start
Now you're rooted and can proceed to unlock the phone and/or flash a custom rom.
PS: If your wanna buy the phone outright, try omegacell(dot)com; they're based in Canada (Edmonton).
May I just say welcome to the best phone money can buy! If you're comfortable with jailbreak then i wouldn't worry about unbranded phone. You can just flash a custom rom. And I'm pretty sure I saw an unlocking thread in the development section.

The instructions in post #8 refer to rooting, not unlocking.
For unlocking (once rooted) use this app...

I have no real need (at the minute) to unlock my phone, but I tried that and it gave me an unlock code in 5-10 minutes which worked first time.

in terms of battery, ip4 loose completely for not having a user replaceable battery.
for the sgs2, i just need to invest some money to buy a stand alone charger and a spare battery, my phone will never need to be plug to a charger. i can use it 24/7.
example, using battery A, while battery B is fully charged and standing by.
browse the web & play HD games for 5 hours, battery A depleted,
swap battery B and let battery A charge. continue playing game using battery B.
friends iphone4, browse the web & play HD games for 5 hours,
battery depleted, hook ip4 to charger and wait 2 hours for it to charge,
stare at me jealousy while i continue playing with my phone.

It's all about the apps you have running. I recently did a format and started from scratch and my SGS2 lasts alot longer. Same for the iPhone. I had to re-install all my apps one by one to see what the rouge app was. I admit, Android has more apps that can put strain on phone and possibly cripple batt life but lets face it, there is soooooo much more running in the background on android and for the batt life I am getting with my SGS2 is totally fine. I take mine off the charger around 7am. At around 10pm I'm at around 30%. That's good enough for me!

Yes it is included like it was on my unlocked Nexus S but unless I rooted I couldn't use the built tether unless I payed the extra $25.00 a month. I don't use it enough to pay the extra. So just wantednto know if anyone is using the built in tether on their G S II? And if they had to root it to use the tether without having to pay the extra? Thanks

If you are still looking for a phone check out Pacific mall there area bunch of stores that will sell the international version of the phone or the bell of contract.
I heard the Rogers version is coming out at the end of the month. Big issue I see with lte version is that the data plans aren't changing the largest data plan on Rogers is 6 gigs and on lte you will go through that in no time.

That's another thing i didn't know about the iPhone 4, you seriously cannot get a replaceable battery that is madness what happens if the battery fails what do they do then, then again you'd expect nothing less from Apple, i hear in order to change your ringtone you have to plug the phone via USB into your laptop/PC, that again is tragic, you cant change wallpapers either and no such thing as widgets.
Tell you what Apple would be lost only for their marketing team, they are the real reason why they sell so many iPhones with their aggressive marketing policy and people like sheep go out and purchase in their droves.
iPhone = fail.
i loved my iphone 4 to death and i did not thought they would be a better phone out there. battery life i charged it over night and still had to charge it again by the end of the day again. anyway with my galaxy s2 i can go on two days with out charging and that is having the wifi on all the time and making calls and etc..so my thing is galaxy s2 is a step up in class and the only phone that is going to beat it will be the s3...only think that would sway me back to iphone is the apps but again i love android and with the new update im sure the devs on here will cook up something special up

It's not the battery life that is amazing..it is the size of the battery.
The lte dropping isn't the phone. Its Verizon's CDMA and LTE authentication methods in place. You gotta go with the nexus, everything about it is far superior. Unless you want to print poster size pics from the phone camera, if so apple wins.
The Rezound is terrible, the Razr Maxx is alright but has too much bezel and i'm not a huge fan of motoblur. She'll out the extra $ and get the Nexus, it'll also be first in updates and rooting it is ridiculously easy.

dont want to seem mean, but they have to be idiots to buy the i9000 (this year) when
the i9100 and many other devices have been released
(not including the SGS3, yes im admitting that it is better then the i9000)
My biggest gripe with the SGS3 is that the increased battery will probs be eaten up (and then some) by the new "niche" functionalities. And I'm having trouble using my sgs2 for more than a day if I use it as a proper smartphone (unlike, and I hate to say this, my work iphone which gives me 3 days of standby on top of 9+hours use time with exchange, wifi and GPS on 24/7).
SGS2 will blow anything out of the water with mindnumbing functionality, but honestly, 95% of my use is calls, sms, mms, mail, facebook and spotify when working out. And even with the official 2000mAh battery I'll struggle to get through 24 hrs if I dont let JuiceDefender strangle everything.
I saw nothing about battery life in that live broadcast, and it bummed me out and really put me off that phone.
I don't want to cross to the Dark side!!!!!!

Howdy, Guys.
Well, my digitizer broke, started getting really really finnicky, at first I thought it was just CM9 touch drivers. But yesterday, I noticed it had a huge dead spot, and touch test confirmed. I found a deal on a Lumia 900 on Craigslist, and will be using this for the next 5 months until my upgrade.

Most especially the leaker of the unlocked boot loader file then the devs who brought us more than enough great roms to make me really love this phone (after blur made me hate it) I'll still keep my Atrix so I can still try out what you all come up with.
Unfortunately, I have upgraded my phone as well to the Galaxy S3. Since money is tight, I am selling my Atrix to pay for the upgrade so Aura is now discontinued officially (I assume most considered it that way already).
It was a fun run and I hope everyone has a wonderful year.

While I am on the SGSII right now, I am still excited about a more stable CM9 on the Atrix.
Too many turn offs with me on upgrade options. SGSIII - Micro SIM (and I don't want to go the SIM adapter route) + too large of a screen.
Nexus - refuse to buy until Nexus finally makes a phone with a MicroSD.
HTC - Needs to prove itself in battery life.
Honestly while I am currrntly enjoying the SGSII, I'm STILL going back and forth with my Atrix on CM7.2. Don't know why but I just really love almost everything about the Atrix, and probably will never sell it...

Once you play with it for a few hours it makes the Atrix feel downright tiny and insignificant in screen size, it is crazy. It feels pretty much perfect in size after a short while.
Not to mention that it runs more fluid on the stock rom than any phone I have ever used. Amazing device, I would definitely say go try it out once demo's start showing up in stores. The microSIM isn't so bad, since after using it for a few days I can't use the Atrix anymore. It feels so small and hard to see the screen... which is kinda depressing because I loved the Atrix, only phone I have ever used for my full contract period.

Here's what I said in a thread of someone asking if it's worth it. Basically: you should buy it.
Johmama said:
The main pros of the Nexus 4 that I keep listing anytime I tell people about it are the following:
1. Price. $350 is pretty much half the price of any other competitor to the Nexus 4
2. Pure Android, updated directly from Google. As soon as a new version of Android is released, it's on the Nexus. Google develops Android FOR this device.
3. Design. Glass front and back, it's a solid phone. Looks sleek.
Now, newly-released phones do have slightly better hardware. But we're getting to the point of diminishing returns. We're packing so much hardware into these devices, you'll hard-pressed to find software that actually makes use of it. I think the only debate you should be having is buy the Nexus 4 now, or wait until the next Nexus comes out, possible during the holidays. That isn't to say this phone won't still be a solid phone then, but I can understand if some people wait to buy updated versions.
To answer your question: yes. It is definitely worth it. At $350, it's fiscally irresponsible NOT to buy a Nexus 4. Right now I'm paying $30/mo for a tablet plan on AT&T with 3gb of data. Having weird and crazy options like that don't seem to happen with other phones. I feel like the Nexus 4 is YOUR phone, not 80% your phone, 20% the manufacturer's.
Spoiler alert: I might be a little biased, but c'mon. It's a sweet phone.

You're falling further behind, get it asap and let the good times roll!
Thanks everyone for replies, especially @Johmama . How's the battery life and speaker sound? I wish I could buy it now, but I have tickets to pay so I have to wait a month
Not to mention the strong development support, if you're the adventurous type it's nearly impossible to hard-brick a Nexus.
Pure Android (AOSP) is rather nice by itself and I could live with that, but I like to go custom a bit .

Well battery isn't as long as say a Galaxy S3 with a 7000mAh extended battery on it. The N4 uses a 2100mAh battery and depending on your usage, it could last maybe 4 hours of constant screen usage at full brightness (screen takes most the battery), or it can last over 21 with the occasional checking of facbook, emails, etc once every couple of hours.
Here's a screenshot when I finally got it down to zero percent. (it stayed idle overnight as I slept, and then I used it here and there during the day.)

LoL, true we may be bias, but I'll at least tell you quirks I've noticed. Even so I'd still pick an N4 unless all the other brands want to ship full AOSP at the same price and include extras like maybe a micro-SD card slot or replaceable battery . I kind of wish you could use USB-OTG without a 5V adapter, but I don't use my phone the same way I use my Tablet.

It usually lasts me the whole day until late. I'm not constantly using it, however. I'm on all stock so you'd get much better battery running a different kernel and rom

Well I'm not buying a phone of any of you, so it's not like someone has to advertise it so I'd buy it. That's why I asked in N4 forum, because all of you have N4.
Basic stuff like Wifi and 3G data have hardware or driver problems. I sometimes wish I'd paid $100 more for a phone that has had more testing/QA. (Not sure there is a better phone for only $100 more, though.) I still prefer this phone to the SGS3, which has fundamentally bad OS design and poor compatibility with third party Android builds.
Hi Guys,
I currently have a Xperia Z1 and am thinking of getting a G2. I know it's won a lot of awards but I want to know your experiences before buying it. How is the usual screen time and that's my main question? Also how do you deal with the 16gb storage? That is my main concern while getting it.
Thanks

Hi,
And all your questions have been answered in different threads, you just need a little search...
Battery life (or screen on time if you prefer), it depends mainly (only) of your use (games, browsing, just calls, etc...) and your settings (like screen brightness, synchro, wifi/data, etc...), how we can tell you what will be your average battery life depending to your use...?
Same thing for the storage, how we can know what you put in your phone and if it will be enough It's just you who know this... In any case something nice exists: USB OTG cable or at least cloud storage.

No battery drain. I use my storage for music when I hit the gym and my photos. I also use google drive which is an additional 15 gigs of cloud storage for free. I'm a heavy web and app user (I use anywhere from 12-15 apps) with my screen cranked to about 60% also and I get 16 hours of straight usage which includes talk time. If you're a power user you'd love the phone. If you do light usage you'd love it even more. People complain about the GPS. You let it lock in the first time (it takes about 30 sec) after that its an instant lock. This is a great phone
I love it! I use it normally full time college student and get the most about 18hours on battery sometimes more

Ok I've decided to get a G2 and have paid for it. Should be getting it on Tuesday. Any tips? I only managed to get the 16GB version as I can't afford the 32GB one.
Love mine. 12 of use and I still have 42% battery left.

Alright mate, Imma try to give you a quick though solid, personal opinion of mine:
*I WANTED THE NEXUS 5 b4 THE 1st WHIFF OF RUMORS STARTED .... BUT ~>
*I have been on VZW forever + have unlimited data, recently on the GNEX running 4.4 quite well
*After WEEEEEKS of hemming-hawing about: stay on VZW w/ unl. data, supior. ntwrk. BUT w/ a new contract -OR- get a N5 and go with much more inferior services, Play Store wait time > I had one on order within an hour of release buuut I just kept debating if I wanted to deal with a switch, etc (FYI, NO I CAN'T STAND VZW "Customer Service" & MASSIVE GREED & LACK OF A SOLID RANGE OF HIGH-END DEVICES ?& POOR OTA's .... and on and on)
>>>I knew I couldn't simply reply to your question quickly .... I was down to the Moto X (older tech eliminated it 4me BUT it IS a badass) ... so it was down to the NEXUS 5 & dealing with a switch, losing my unlimited data & gettting crappy other carrier OR get the N5's closest KIN .... THE LG G2.
I am a very content (yet still tentative) owner of a G2 for 36 hrs so far .... got 13 more days to return to Best Buy w/o ANY restocking fee -IF- I do not like IT .... I got mine for $49.00 (yeah, yeah on contract) ..... rooted it last night and have been messing with it for hours on end (need to go to sleep. gotta work in a little bit !) ..... anyways, I just flashed AOSPA 4.0+/4.4 w/ Custom G2 kernel ..... coming from a completely TWEAKED/OPTMZD VanirAOSP GNEX, the G2 is VERY IMPRESSIVE ....significantly better camera than N5, SAME SNAP 800, a little better build quality, a little more 'refined' & 'polished' BUT the dammm buttons on the back take A LOT of getting used to, esp when trying to do combos to get recovery, etc
SOOOOO, It is MY HONEST OPINION, THAT YES, THE G2 (ROOTED & LIGHTLY TWEAKED) IS WELL-WORTH YOUR TIME & MONEY ..... if only we could get 1/10th of the DEV Support that the N5 gets lmmfao !
Hope that helped ... a little anyways ..... I will add .... the G2 is EASILY the BEST DAMM SMARTPHONE I HAVE PERSONALLY OWNED - no doubt !!!

Aside from your Verizon Experience I agree about the LG G2.
I just ordered this phone today from Amazon. They put it on sale last night for 1 cent and they don't charge sales tax here. Couldn't pass that up and if I decide that I want the N5 I'll have two new phones for the cost of the N5. :good:
I had then choice between the Nexus 5 and the G2, but because the two in Denmark cost the same. This is why I chose the G2:
Amazing battery. I only charge 2 time a day when i'm flashing roms constantly
Big screen to footprint ratio (Also bright colors, and nice contrast)
Great camera (As long as you stay on the stock rom, it really slow on aosp based roms)
Personally i have come to like the back mounted buttons and knock-on
Currently i'm running a AOSPA 4.0 rom (KitKat), so basically right now my G2 is a "better-than-nexus" for the same price.
I'll give it 8/10. Loses two because of the ugly LG software, and the plasticy body. Both if which i have fixed with the KitKat rom, and a soft touch case.
If your take photos of toddlers or pets you'll want to kill the phone dead. With fire.

Check out the the thread that addresses the screen issues before you purchase the G2.

It's been an awesome device for me for almost 2 months for me. I'm a heavy user and I can easilly get through the entire day on the battery. Its fast fluid and smooth and LG's factory UI is amazing. But the sceen issues have pretty much crippled the device. knock knock doesnt work any more and there's a strip across the upper portion of the screen that doesnt register touches anymore. With the screen issues happening so often to users, I can't recomend this device to anyone.

Supposedly the below fix helps to reduce lag and even camera lagg... Give it a shot..

Also has anyone used USB OTG ? Can I use a micro-USB to SD card adapter while using USB OTG protocol? I guess it should work...
The one I have the idea of using is this. Its just easier for me as I already have a micro SD card and its less bulky then lets say as flash drive...
http://www.amazon.co.uk/USB2-0-MICRO...+micro+sd+card
Please really need this info as I need to order this ASAP ...
After contemplating for a whole while, choosing from an unlocked Xperia Z1 or Ultra, LG G2 (even the F320 expandable versions) international editions and the 32GB Nexus 5 (of which Google Play ended up shipping out last Wed, in spite of "shipping from warehouse by Dec 3") for weeks.
Well, after weighing the pros vs cons on the Nexus 5 vs G2 for Straight Talk use...I ended up with a locked T-Mobile LG G2 from Swappa. Took delivery of it last Black Fri. It is now running sweetly on my old microSIM trimmed Straight Talk/T-Mob service.
Coming from an old Gingerbread 2.3 Acer Liquid MT (data at 3-4Mbps tops) holdout...this LG is effing pretty fast on all fronts (data hitting 13-14+Mbps consistently).
I'm still in the process of tinkering my new LG toy though..
My LG G2 love affair has just begun.
P.S. All I need now..getting to have my Moto Xoom internet to work tethering from my LG..and to refuse UPS delivery of the black N5 by tomorrow.
