Hello.
I made a video of me racing in F1 2010 on PC. When the 2.1 update comes out, i will record again in 720p and make a small comparison.
Take a look
Ps: At the time of this thread, the video is being processed, so quality will improve a little when its done.
people who don't want to show off their multihead setup would have made a reference video that shows the zoomfunction, some colors, contrast and stuff like this
either way, nice setup
hope it to be way too different

lol, im not showing it off. as i stated.
simply making a simple video now, then when 2.1 is out, i will record the same reply, and them put them side by side
The things is... like with the pictures, default camera app compressing the images too much same will happen with 720p.
If if we will have 720p, the clip will be so compressed (and the frame rate too low anyway) that won't make such a big difference in quality.
So NoDo is here at last....seems way faster and much better than pre-NoDo.
Things I've noticed that I haven't seen publicised -
Headphone button now hangs up a call, didn't used to.
Display driver seems worse for some pages (WPCentral page, Bing search pages - noticeable banding, even where there didn't used to be).
Switch from WiFi to non-WiFi much smoother (I used to have particular problems with this
Anyone noticed anything else or got the same issue with the Display driver that I have?
All in all a big fan but will look forward to any further driver updates that might get the display working to it's Amoled best!
- mine not saving camera setting such as wide dynamic range or antishake, also video resolution is not saved
But this were also in old soft
no problems here. everything seems to be improved

That's a feature. Microsoft is considering allowing the settings to be saved.
Am I alone with the display banding (really noticeable if you press the search button - the Bing 'Wallpaper' used to be really high resolution but now looks pants)?

Considering? They better allow it because it's the most frustrating part of WP7 for me. I want it in 720 as soon as I go into video mode!

That was like that before NoDo. I think it just depends on the wallpaper tbh. Dont think the quality is lower. But just not the right rendering.
Ive wrote to MS on facebook. On their feedback programme and questionaires and twitter about the camera settings.
Accordingly by alot of websites its a "feature" so incase you mess up settings it goes back to normal. I can justify this for all the settings except the quality settings. Damn why would you want to shoot in lower resolution when you can do it in 720p?

Isnt that OEM's fault for not getting the code right?
I wish MS just stopped mucking around and release their own damn phone. That way there will be no fall in quality as they will be able to control everything on the phone and do it, the way its meant to be done
I have noticed the same problem with display.
The most visible artefacts I have found in "Now" app. Waves the the top of the screen are corrupted with soime artefacts.
I have also noticed that photos in people tile are more bright than before update.
Again your just being picky. Ive seen the wave ripples for vibration before the update.
It shouldnt affect the display or anything else. Its just an OS update and not a firmware update (well atleast that was the case for me)
Ive said this alot of times before that the clarity of AMOLED screens isnt as good as LCD screens. Yeah colours might be nicer but its not as clear as LCD SLCD
I do not want to compare SuperAmoled (Oled) and SLCD (LCD).
I do compare a display issue which appeared after update to 7008/NoDo from 7004.
There was no display issue with firmware 7004. Al least I believe it because I had not noticed it before update.
I'm just saying that it was there already. And its amoled issue and not the OS as their two different things

Is there absolutely no improvement to the 720P capture? Is it still very choppy?
I wish Samsung would sort out the abnormally high shutter speed/white balance bug, so that the videos would appear less choppy.
Live mail folders still dosent update correct on my phone.

Banding, otherwise known as contouring, is a digital artifact common to images, displays or apps of 16bit(thousands of colours) or less.
Gradient image
Viewing the 24bit image in the above link will not show banding on a 24bit display(3 x 8bit channels of R, G & B millions of colours) if viewed in a 24bit app.
If 32 distinct bands are seen, possibly with every 1/3 band being a green shade, then the screen or the image viewing application is not 24bit capable.
Viewing 16bit or lower resolution gradient images on your screen will also show banding.
The Android browser shows banding with this image while the Dolphin HD browser does not.
In short, the SGNote has a 24bit display, which will show banding if viewing 16bit or lower images or using a 16bit or lower viewing application.
More on screen bits
Im noticing lots of banding in lots of different apps :-/
Same here, also happens with Google apps like the Market. Not sure what we can do about it anybody has suggestions?

At least it is not the Note's display hardware that is the issue.
ICS may upgrade some Android OS apps to 24bit.
Thank You for this
This proves that Apps that display banding simply aren't rendering at 24bit.
I was leaning towards there being an issue with the screen as this problem was not noticeable on my previous android devices.
This clarifies everything.
Thanks.

You are welcome.
It bugged me too, until I got to the bottom of it.
Trust your eyes, the screen is glorious.
I too don't believe the hardware to be the issue. I suspect it's more to do with having a device with a smallish screen and a large 1280x800 resolution. Higher res images and videos look amazing. If the image is quite compressed (i.e. lossy) then the higher resolution screen will show this more than a low resolution screen. Garbage in, garbage out comes to mind. We need all apps and videos and images to be high resolution 24bit minimum to make the most of our amazing screen .

ha ha . Listen, think of it like this. You've probably got a high resolution monitor attached to your computer. Do you prefer watching videos at 420p and lower or 720p and higher? No doubt the answer is higher resolution to match your monitor.
What Samsung has done is squeeze in a screen with similar resolution to a 13" laptop, but in a 5.3" mobile device! So we're going to come across lots of images and videos aimed at 'normal' mobile devices, which won't look so great on our high-res screen. To make the most of the screen you can copy 720p or 1080p high profile videos to your sdcard, and they will look incredible on playback, but they will also be large and it's a slow process, and if the video is long then it'll also hit the limitation with FAT max file sizes. Those issues aren't the fault of the screen though. It's simple really. If you want to make the most of the screen density then you have to provide it with good quality source material suitable for a high resolution screen.
Do you think that its just software? No hardware? Do you think that ICS will fix this?
I came from dell streak and its realy hard to watch on note specialy on dark scene.
even opening xda app it has banding problems

It's definitely not a hardware issue because the screen is definitely 24bit colour. It displays well in the right app. You could swap apps for those that handle higher bit images. If you use Dolphin HD, possibly other browsers, webpages are seen in 24bit, if they are 24bit images. I don't know but there must be alternative picture viewing apps. Dice Player is a high res video viewer. As for system graphics, they don't look so bad to me. For games etc, it means living with banding until the maker upgrades? This is always the case on computers.
Be thankful Samsung have not rorted us.
Apple has ripped off it's customers many times selling lo-res screens as high res:
"Apple has received a new class action complaint alleging the MacBook
does not support millions of colors, but rather 16 bit color, which is
dithered to approximate millions of colors."

I don't have a Note yet, but can somebody try with QuickPic, it has an option in it's settings to force decode in 32bit mode.
That could clarify if it is a software or hardware problem...

The video and photographs shot with the phone's own camera have the same problems as other video and pictures. Surely they should display OK.

The phone has a 24bit 16 million colour display.
Some apps, including the picture viewing gallery app do not display 24bit colour in the 24bit quality they were made. See here
Thanks, Xaddict, this all makes sense regarding 24- versus 16-bit rendering.
Still, shouldn't intelligent/adaptive codecs be able to bridge the chasm by re-rendering 16-bit source material into some sort of "interleaved" or "inferred" gradual gradation or gradient... a codec to "smooth" the blend, if you will.
It's a codec issue, isn't it?
I wonder if Samsung or ICS will solve this first, if ever...
It feels like the Note has the same display like the first Desire (Amoled) that I've owned.
Its been said that this is a software problem, I've never seen this fixed with a 3rd party custom ROM since the Galaxy S1 days. Even 'x' ROM still shows color banding.
Found a solution for the wallpaper. Install MultiPicture live wallpaper (free from market) Go into it's settings and select "Color depth", then select "True color (24-bit). If the image you selected and used is 24bit, there will be no banding in your wallpaper. Hope this helped, cheers
Depending on the wallpaper you'ed still see massive banding.

It's not a software problem.
If anything, it's a low quality image being viewed on a 24bit screen problem.
Hi all, just nabbed a 7.7 today moving away from the p1000. I started playing around with the camera and I immediately noticed some oddities especially when switching to video mode set at 720p quality.
Below are screenshots taken with my SGS 2, where I placed the tablet stationary at a certain distance from my printer and tested different resolution settings on the camera, while maintaining the tablet in same position at all times.
First a test with the picture mode, the distances between 480p and the highest quality isn't very noticeable but it's there,
480p
Highest quality with widescreen
This, I have no problems whatsoever, taking pictures still feels the same as the p1000 and that's good because I'm used to that.
Next is where I am really confused. When switching to video mode, I noticed the entire printer seems to be zoomed in closer and the graininess has increased drastically (I suspect the increased in graininess comes from zooming too close to it). I have checked everywhere in the menu to look for zoom settings but alas, after googling around the tablet's default camera app doesn't support zoom at all. Which brings me to an even bigger problem, as it just feels out of place when everything is zoomed in whenever I wanted to take a video recording. After turning down the quality to 480p, it felt so much better with the distancing between the object and the camera. Pics below will show the comparison between both settings,
480p video
720p video
Is everyone else having this same oddity with their camera as well? I hope its not a 'normal' thing cause I'd be hating it immensely (just using 480p mode in the meantime) :|
any kind sgt owners willing to test this out for me and give a feedback?
at least I could pinpoint if its a hardware or software problem, if its different between other tablets.
I am having the same problem. I was wanting to use my 7.7 as a uStream live streaming device for some of our company events, and because of this problem, I am using my phone instead, which sucks because phone calls can interupt!
Anyone else notice vid camera zoomed all of the way in, with no other way to zoom out. Is there a fix?
I have never used 720p video recording before, but after reading this thread I just tried it. Same problem as reported. On 480p everything works fine, but on 720p vid is zoomed in alot. Also quality is way worse than on 480p.
I guess without this thread I would have never noticed that, but this is indeed a huge bug that should not happen on final software for an expensive device like this.
It is advertised with hd video recording after all...
thanks guys for the feedback!
I was almost tempted to try another firmware but with different SGT 7.7's out there affected by this bug, it needs to be reported.
I am pretty sure it is a software problem which is causing the camera to zoom in on HD mode (digital zooming is possible with third party software as I have tried it)
Also, because it is always digitally zoomed in, the quality/graininess will be a lot worse, this is what every tab 7.7 owner will be looking at.
Could anyone guide me to report this directly to Samsung? I'm hoping its fixed before official ICS!
bump, anyone else having the same issues with their camera just give a feedback here.
+1
Also the text is cut off in settings when in landscape.. geez
I have the same issue. Tried using a video recorder app off the market and it would digital zoom 720p and 480p so that wasn't any help.

wow that sucks ! I dont have the sgt 7.7 with me but this is too serious to be overlooked
i guess based on the amount of responses in this thread most of the tab owners never really cared about 720p video recording
this is my FINAL samsung android product... I feel that they have dropped the ball this time, their pinnacle being SGS 2 and I will always remember the younger days when samsung was focused on something good,
now they are just releasing products like different branded cereal without even tasting them first.
someone explained this one to me before since I hate the 'zoom' effect of the screen as well, but as per his explanation, this could be due to the camera pixel, we have a 3.2 on board camera, using it in 3.2mpxl snapper makes use of the whole image sensor pixel array. using the 720P video on the other hand will use only a portion of that array and the software automatically fill the screen. I don't have an explanation regarding the full screen, un-zoomed 480P though,
I dont find this as a problem but if we can just have this adjusted (zoom in and out) it would be much better
Sammy juat stopped caring about their tabs. Gs3 is making sales targets. Thats good enough for them. Too bad! 7 inch market is super competative. If they dont act fast they will lose just like blackbery and their underdeveloped playbok

I am so angry I'm considering ditching Samsung. ICS finally arrived in the UK via Kies a couple of days ago. I didn't have this issue with Honeycomb but now with ICS my P6800 video camera, when in HD mode displays a zoomed image. The only reason I;m not ditching it right now is because of the SuperAMOLED screen - the same reason I paid silly money for it when I could have gotten a Nexus.
I have done some recherching and found out this is not a bug! Many devices have this. I'll try to explain what happens:
If you record videos in HD, your device has to downscale the video to show it to you on display while at the same time saving it in HD resolution and keeping the promised frame rate. This needs too much processing power, framerate would just drop. So they use a little trick: If you don't downscale the preview but only show a small part of what the sensor gets you save alot of processing power. But on the other hand it gives you the noticed "zoomed-in" look, also the image quality is less because it does not use the whole sensor (like it would on a still).
The saved video should look normal (not zoomed-in).
Hope my english is not too bad so you can understand what I mean

Standard poor copy-paste response from Samsung, which appear not to acknowledge that the device isn't a telephone:
Thank you for contacting Samsung and I have pleasure in providing the following assistance.
I’m sorry you are having issues with your device after upgrading the firmware. I can understand your frustration about this.
Old systems settings can be left on the phone after an update occurs, which is why we usually recommend a full factory reset after updating. If this isn’t done your device may begin to give false readings from system resources, or experience technical problems, which may explain the issue you are having.
We would advise on doing the following, which is designed to reset the settings on your device. Please back up your device using Samsung KIES before you do this.
1) Remove the battery for at least 40 minutes, put the battery back in and allow it to fully discharge. Afterwards, perform a full battery charge with the device turned off. Do not interrupt the charging process.
2) After the battery is fully charged, we would like you to perform a full factory reset, which can be done via Settings > Backup > Reset.
This process will reset your device, remove old system files that are no longer needed and enable your device to operate normally again.
Please let us know if your device continues to experience problems after the reset so we can investigate further.
If you require any further assistance, please contact Samsung again and we will be more than happy to help.
Kind regards

I must respectfully disagree. If that were the case then the behaviour should have been the same prior to the ICS update. Also, when copying the video off the device and playing it back on a FullHD capable device the quality is still poor.
Hi! I have a problem with my G4, These last days I've been changing many roms because I got bored of the one I had. When I decided to stay in a rom (Omni rom) I noticed hat image quality at Instagram, gplaystotre and basically everywhere is less sharpness, I mean there are like pixels that never been before. This never happened to me, I had deal with hard things in phones but never this. This affect videos as well on yt, 1080p quality is not like before. Now I'm in stock 6.0.1 ( via fastboot) because I thought that it may solve but no. I also tried many other roms but it seems like every rom now has it when it never ever images were like this. I've changed kernels, DPI, added zips to improve image quality ( got them by general forum of Android hacking, etc) and nothing. I noticed performance improved but no idea why. How can I solve it? How can my image quality on apps be like before? PS: In chrome, I go to Instagram and images quality are good, like they were. But in Instagram app images are like pixelated ( 99% of apps are, excluding websites acceded by chrome). Thanks!
With what your describing, it sounds like your device is running at a lower resolution. Changing DPI in settings can't solve this. Try downloading easy DPI changer and change resolution to 1080 ,1920, with DPI at 480. That's the default display resolution settings on the G4 plus, which I'm assuming you have since you posted here. It's worth a try
