Identify a 501 - Acer Iconia A500

I picked up an a500 and am loving it..
Although the Mrs is really using it most of the time..
Now I think I want to get a 501..
In case I find one used.. How do I Identify that is indeed a 501 and not just a 500?
Thanks,

I have A501 and basiclly it differs from the A500 is the 3G capability. Its a reply good tablet and extremely underrated.

According to rumors, AT&T was supposed to offer the A501 sometime this year. Currently only the iPad, Samsung Galaxy, and HTC Jetstream show up as available on their web site.
And from Tuesday's Planet Insane news we have
"But Amazon recently posted a pre-order page as it gave indications that the 4G Acer Iconia A501 Tab may soon enter the US market."

Is there any way via the system or by looking at the outside to tell it's a 501?

since 501 is equipped with 3G ability, then i guess the simcard slot would be a good way to differentiate between this and 500

The 500 has the slot too.. just has tape over it... But if you put a sim in it will go all the way though.. and rattle around in it..
Maybe with a flash light you could see the metal contacts.. not sure if this is true or not..

Turn it on, if you can see the backlight through the SIM slot then there's probabally no 3G unit in it. I haven't actually used an A501 to verify this, though.

[Q] adding 1700 MHz antenna to Streak?

Hi all... apologies if this has been discussed... I did a search but couldn't find anything.
Is there a way to add a 1700MHz antenna to the streak hardware?
I figure since they made a few of the streaks with the 1700MHz antenna, there might be a way?
I also thought I would email the guys who did the tear down of the streak to get their opinion.
Thanks for any help.
+1
I would like to know as well if there is such possibilities.
I am looking into buying a 2100/1700/900 antenna and seeing if someone in phone repair knows how to solder it in place... will let you know if I have any success!
thx

There's been a lot of buzz about a T-Mo version over the last week and alot more just since yesterday. It looks like it might be released soon.

Jenn on streak smart made a similar comment... "1) there's a string of evidence that a T-Mobile version of the existing Streak will eventually be released," in the 12-26 post at www.streaksmart.com
She doesn't give any details about what the "string of evidence" is... so I'm not sure what she's talking about... have you guys heard anything?
Maybe they will announce something at CES... I have so far not been able to make contact with anyone about soldering in a new AWS antenna... and may wait to see what happens next week.
If they are going to release a 5" Streak with Tmo I will wait... not sure about the 7" which apparently will be available thru Tmo from the get go... I had a Galaxy Tab for a while and altho I loved it... it was kind of big to carry around all the time... maybe the Dell will be lighter or thinner, who knows.

I sure keep my eye on streaksmart.com. And did read Jenn mentioning about TMo-US version of Streak, but that's about it.
I really want Streak to work with TMo which it does but EDGE is too slow.
Lets see what happens in next few days at CES.
Also, where would to get this "AWS Antenna"?
My thought is to get a broken phone with the right kind of antenna... it's kind of a long shot I know, in terms of it fitting in the Streak case... also, I note by googling that the antennas are attached to a cable, so soldering might not be the way.
I will wait to see what happens at CES and if there is no 5" Streak with Tmo antennas, then I will contact the guys that did the Streak tear down (and lots of other cell phone teardowns) to see if replacing the antenna with one that has 1700/2100 MHz is possible... since Dell made some of the units that way, somehow it must be... but I'm not sure if it would take that exact antenna or if another one could be used somehow... that is the question.

Theoretically you probably could. You'd have to get the hardware, which probably isn't too easy for the average consumer. Then you'd have to swap it out with what's in there already. Even if you get the hardware swapped and manage to not ruin anything else innside the phone, there's one minor hurdle: software. You'd have to have a radio that worked with 1700. If you swap out current hardware with what shipped in the test builds that were handed out as demo units, you could probably find that old radio. If you swap it out with something that's only AWS, you'll have to essentially build your own radio. At least, that's my understanding.
While it all may be theoretically possible, I think it's a gigantic waste of time, effort, and money. Try to pick up a demo unit that supports AWS. They gave those out in Texas, right? If memory serves...

As long as they have 5" version which will work on TMo-US 3G bands, I am happy!
SoberGuy is right, kinda. You will need a new radio, although not in the software sense - the actual hardware that generates the RF signals, not just the antenna. Think of it as having a CB radio and putting a TV antenna on it - it won't make your CB transmit on TV frequencies.

Thx kd5uzz... so I'd need a radio and antenna... of course that makes sense that it would need something for receiving AND sending!
Since I origially posted this thread there have been some (unofficial) rumblings of the Streak 7 being released on Tmobile... so I am considering waiting for it. Also, Jenn on streaksmart has alluded to the "existing" version Streak being released on Tmo in 2011 as well.
And as I mentioned above, I have also heard about a "more than 5 in. " Palm tabphone called the Mansion that is planned for March 11 release (yeah, I know... subject to slippage of course).... that will be on Sprint... which would work fine too.
So I guess I'm not feeling the need to do a teardown/rebuild yet... but thx again for the input... I still think it can be done but I'm also dealing with some other issues at the moment.
You cant just swap antennas, the circuit board and the software must be able to support. If this was possible somebody would have figured it out by now.

I'm not planning getting any tablet but if I'd do I'd just kill/disable whatever service/app I want - it's mine, period. Then if I want to use Skype or a SIP app, I will, period. Heck, I root it if I want.

Stood next to a dude who also thought of getting a Xoom...

Assuming there is sufficient advantage to waiting.
Waiting by itself doesn't qualify having patience. Sometimes it means you don't understand the choice. The only real "disadvantage" in buying the Xoom now is the price. What about the Samsung tablet appeals to you more? Or was this purely about the Xoom?

Ha, was laughing at that too.
Am I missing something. What on earth makes the tablet by Samsung any better than one by motorola unless you are a homunculus incapable of holding a 1.6lb device but can hold a 1.3?
In all seriousness though, besides aestethics and brand preference I don't see the draw. I am seriously looking googling to try and find the big deal. Moto is a proven OEM in the Android world, and the XOOM is wide open and soon to be 4G capable. I see that the 10.1 is supposed to be HSPA 21+mbps so I am assuming T-Mo's fake 4G?
It seems it has a better rear camera, higher resolution video, optional capacities, and a proximity sensor(did they forget this isn't a phone) in the THINGS THE XOOM DON'T category.
It has a single instead of dual led flash, no new data tech, no HDMI, no barometer(hmmm someone tell me wtf a barometer is for) no external memory(which I will be using to put music on my tablet when I get a deal on a 32gb microsd, or so I tell myself), no ambient light sensor(I don't like autobrightness but I see the utility) in the THINGS THE XOOM DOES category.
Options are good but I don't get the point of this pointless thread .

I did not mention in my first post that I also bought the Xoom at Motorola for 25% off and I already have the UPS tracking number and it will be delivered this coming Monday. My bank statement has shown that the charge is complete.
So the price is not really the issue here.
I will not open my Xoom on Monday when I received it but will wait for March 22 to decide.
Biggest advantages of the Samsung tablet are the following:
1. Lighter weight
2. Most likely a better screen (brighter/better contrast). You look at the screen 100% of the time when you use a tablet (unless you just listen to music) so this is very important.
Big disadvantage
1. May not be rootable
Like I mentioned, you don't seem to understand the choice if those are your only disadvantages. I get that you're waiting, I just find your attitude funny.

Your a better man than me. Me, personally I will never buy another samsung product. What shortcomings does the Xoom have that the 10.1 won't have? From what I have read the 10.1 is inferior spec wise to the Xoom althoigh they are very close.

acer iconia a500 or asus transformer thanks
The iPad.
*Iconia DUH*
in what way
1) Iconia is available
2) USB port without buying an expensive keyboard
3) better build quality
4) lots of other bullet points which others can feel free to expand upon
Newegg has the 32gb Transformer in stock. $50 more than the A500, though. If you don't care about the optional $150 keyboard, I think the A500 is better because of the better build and full sized USB port.

I'm not sure why another thread such as this is needed. However, since you asked, I'd say go with the Acer.....keeping in mind that this is an Iconia forum. The USB port is very handy. The Asus with the dock becomes a net book. So, I'm at a meeting and a coworker hands me a flash drive to upload some files to. With the Acer I just plug it in. With the Asus ill need to get out the dock (net book) and attach to upload the files. I purchased the Iconia to replace my laptop, giving my backpack a smaller, lighter profile. Just my .02

.... and if you go to the Transformer section and ask exactly the same question, don't be too surprised to get exactly the opposite answer!
There are pluses and minuses to both tablets - you pays your money and you takes your choice!

asus support sucks
There is a Asus repair facility less the 4 miles from where I live.I had a web can issue with a Dee PC netbook. They told me online I could drop it off to be repaired. When I got over there I was standing in there office area looking thru the glass and could see repair areas. They would not accept my email told me I had to mail it to to them by Ups.I paid 14.00 to ship a product 4 miles from my home.then took them 5 weeks tobget it back to me.
Never would I ever buy another Asus product.I called and complained and was told that they would talk to the people at the repair facility.

I think it comes down to preference. Screen on the Transformer is what sold me. Also the fact that it's thinner and lighter. Unfortunately, I am aware of the QC issues with it and I'm hoping I get a good one. It's available on Amazon for $399 with no tax and free shipping. There was a -$40 off offer if approved for their Amazon Visa credit card, too. Applied in less than 2 minutes and now I paid $359.00 for it.
If it turns out to have a lot of bad issues, I'll consider the a500. The weight and bulk of it kind of turn me off, however.
If there's one thing I will feel like I'm missing out on, though, it would be that oh-so-handy USB port.

I'm done with Acer

My A500 is going back to Costco. This the 3rd one that GPS just sucks. Before the update I was getting form 4-10 invew and in use. They did say GPS will be fix in 3.1...I'm not getting a lock at all now. So F Acer.
I just came back from fry's...they have the Toshiba on display. I tether my nexus 1 and got a lock in 3sec and it's lighter then the Acer. A little bigger but lighter. Yes it's just going to be the 16GB but I have a 32GB SD.
if you dont like it, return it.
edit: i personally havent had a problem with gps. besides its not like im actually using it to navigate. but just a heads up, i will almost guarentee you that there will be something you dont like about the toshiba. and it will just continue. no one makes a perfect tablet, thats why there is still competition and not one company dominating. but good luck, hope its something that works out for you.

And without any brand fanboi-ism here, I'd have to agree. The GPS on the Acer works great for me - as long as you're connected to the Internet. Which requires Wireless. Which kind of assumes you aren't driving. There are some "hacks" to help improve that which seem to work pretty well, but it's a workaround and not an out-of-box solution.
Yes GPS works without Internet, but not as well.
But, I think we can mostly agree the OP is doing a bit of trolling, intentionally or not...

I don't know if it would constitute trolling. A "troll" is someone who says something for the sole purpose of enraging someone else. I think he was just expressing rage he felt himself.
To be honest, I share his pain. I'm considering taking mine back and giving it a third go because of the shoddy GPS.
There is no question that Acer provides poor build construction; but you get what you pay for. The A500 is the cheapest of the "me too" tablets, and it shows. They cheaped out on certain parts to bring the price down. Though, they are also claiming to have sold over a million units, so I guess the strategy is working. In retrospect, I wonder how many of the million units got returned.
What irks me is the complete lack of support from Acer. I've been investigating the GPS issue for a while, and it seems as though Acer is aware of the issue and is now starting to rationalize it, which is never a good sign. I've seen people claim that Acer has told them that the GPS isn't meant to be used for navigation; I've seen people claim that Acer techs have told them outright that GPS doesn't exisit on this model. I've been personally told by Acer that I could send it back in, but it would be on my dime because fixing the GPS constitutes an "upgrade" from original functionality.
Acer is playing the "max units sold" game to try and gain brand recognition in a vain attempt to overtake the iPad, and hoping they don't lose too many customers in the process to defective units.
If you want superior build quality, iPad is second to none. Hopefully the up-coming android tablets give us some more options. Best of luck on whatever you choose.
Cheers,
-PW

edit: i personally havent had a problem with gps. besides its not like im actually using it to navigate. but just a heads up, i will almost guarentee you that there will be something you dont like about the toshiba. and it will just continue. no one makes a perfect tablet, thats why there is still competition and not one company dominating. but good luck, hope its something that works out for you.

That may be true but at what costs? I love the openess of android and the ease of use.
In regards to the GPS I never noticed it before reading lots of posts here, then again I use my cell phone for that since that has constant internet connection.
Sorry for typos using A500 and holding newborn at the same time.
Good luck with the new tablet hope its everything you are looking for.

Seconded. Not very fun to try to use a 10 inch tablet for GPS - that's why I have my El cheapo Virgin Mobile samsung intercept for - 25$ a month, rooted, fits my car mount, provides a unlimited 3g hotspot for my a500

Which is why I really, really don't understand why folks are crying over below-average GPS performance on **WIFI ONLY** tablets.
And if you're using your phone as a wifi hotspot in conjunction with a 10" tablet--in your car--you might as well just use your damn phone as a GPS or get a 3G capable tablet.

Could not agree more. Don't buy a wifi only tablet and expect to use it for navigation - that is just a bit silly.

Well there are apps such as CoPilot which just needs to have a GPS. Though it is a bit idiotic to use a 10" tablet as a navigator, it does not justify the malfunction of the GPS unit!
i.e. in Acer they build crap and QA just approve the crap and then we consumer help them out.
First of all it is not a cheap tablet, cheap to me means something in range of Chinese knock-offs.
Second to that, somebody here read warranty to me that we should accept what they produce since in warranty says everything is "AS-IS". Should consumers really buy crapware since brands says so?

Just got my new B70 from Best Buy

I took my 32Gb Galaxy tab today and asked the sales guy if he'd check the Transformer serial numbers for me. They had a bunch of B50's, a B60, and one B70, so I took it home.
My last Transformer was a B60, and I was more than happy with the screen and the non-creekyness of it, however, my buddy tempted me with the weight of the Galaxy 10.1. Needless to say, the greatness wore off after a couple days and an extra $200.
The B70 came out of the box with even greater quality than my first. The unit feels very solid, no squishy parts, very little (basically unnoticeable light bleed, and the ui on 3.2 feels incredible responsive even without my near standard 200-400MHz over-clock.
I have a new case on the way from Amazon, and I'm on the lookout for a dock to show up locally. I can say that since I started this tablet search, that I've been the happiest with the Transformer. The only 9.7/10.1" tab I haven't tried yet is the Thrive, and that little unit has issues.... Like crazy ex-girlfriend issues.
I'm looking forward to seeing what our lovely devs can put together for 3.2. Can't wait to get my CWM on.
Long live the Transformer.

Its the first 3 letters of the serial number and hence its manufacture date
Most people call them B40, B50, B60 and now B70 but the 3rd character is actually an O not a zero. I just call them by the first 2 characters but to each his own...

...........What until to tomorrow? i got a now 32 micro class 10 (and yes i tested it it's a 10) and a 32 SD in dock on a 32 GB TF! 32GB+32GB+32GB= How i fill that thing up with stuff. 96GB of storage. ( before some smart-ass comes and said: "But they never 32GB only 31.87GB") We all know that. THX Anyhow cant wait to pick it up tomorrow and put bunch of "720p" movies on that thing (ok here another one" Why not 1080p Mr. German???") Because the internal memory, micro SD and the SD dock slot don't have the data transfer rate to support 1080p movies. You still be able to watch 1080p over WIFI though.
Mr. Race fanatic (see above comment ) and myself tested that.

It is an 0 and not an O. Install one of those barcode scanning apps and scan barcode under serial number on the box and then copy that serial to a browser and remove all characters except for 3rd one. See what google tells you.

Try to register your device with Asus using a 0 instead of an O. See what that tells you.
I got a B70, In kalamazoo, MI at a office depot on the 27th.

Just put some glasses on and look at your serial number. It is an O not a zero. Maybe your barcode scanner is faulty?
