Hi all... apologies if this has been discussed... I did a search but couldn't find anything.
Is there a way to add a 1700MHz antenna to the streak hardware?
I figure since they made a few of the streaks with the 1700MHz antenna, there might be a way?
I also thought I would email the guys who did the tear down of the streak to get their opinion.
Thanks for any help.

I would like to know as well if there is such possibilities.
I am looking into buying a 2100/1700/900 antenna and seeing if someone in phone repair knows how to solder it in place... will let you know if I have any success!
thx

There's been a lot of buzz about a T-Mo version over the last week and alot more just since yesterday. It looks like it might be released soon.

Jenn on streak smart made a similar comment... "1) there's a string of evidence that a T-Mobile version of the existing Streak will eventually be released," in the 12-26 post at www.streaksmart.com
She doesn't give any details about what the "string of evidence" is... so I'm not sure what she's talking about... have you guys heard anything?
Maybe they will announce something at CES... I have so far not been able to make contact with anyone about soldering in a new AWS antenna... and may wait to see what happens next week.
If they are going to release a 5" Streak with Tmo I will wait... not sure about the 7" which apparently will be available thru Tmo from the get go... I had a Galaxy Tab for a while and altho I loved it... it was kind of big to carry around all the time... maybe the Dell will be lighter or thinner, who knows.

I sure keep my eye on streaksmart.com. And did read Jenn mentioning about TMo-US version of Streak, but that's about it.
I really want Streak to work with TMo which it does but EDGE is too slow.
Lets see what happens in next few days at CES.
Also, where would to get this "AWS Antenna"?
My thought is to get a broken phone with the right kind of antenna... it's kind of a long shot I know, in terms of it fitting in the Streak case... also, I note by googling that the antennas are attached to a cable, so soldering might not be the way.
I will wait to see what happens at CES and if there is no 5" Streak with Tmo antennas, then I will contact the guys that did the Streak tear down (and lots of other cell phone teardowns) to see if replacing the antenna with one that has 1700/2100 MHz is possible... since Dell made some of the units that way, somehow it must be... but I'm not sure if it would take that exact antenna or if another one could be used somehow... that is the question.

Theoretically you probably could. You'd have to get the hardware, which probably isn't too easy for the average consumer. Then you'd have to swap it out with what's in there already. Even if you get the hardware swapped and manage to not ruin anything else innside the phone, there's one minor hurdle: software. You'd have to have a radio that worked with 1700. If you swap out current hardware with what shipped in the test builds that were handed out as demo units, you could probably find that old radio. If you swap it out with something that's only AWS, you'll have to essentially build your own radio. At least, that's my understanding.
While it all may be theoretically possible, I think it's a gigantic waste of time, effort, and money. Try to pick up a demo unit that supports AWS. They gave those out in Texas, right? If memory serves...

As long as they have 5" version which will work on TMo-US 3G bands, I am happy!
SoberGuy is right, kinda. You will need a new radio, although not in the software sense - the actual hardware that generates the RF signals, not just the antenna. Think of it as having a CB radio and putting a TV antenna on it - it won't make your CB transmit on TV frequencies.

Thx kd5uzz... so I'd need a radio and antenna... of course that makes sense that it would need something for receiving AND sending!
Since I origially posted this thread there have been some (unofficial) rumblings of the Streak 7 being released on Tmobile... so I am considering waiting for it. Also, Jenn on streaksmart has alluded to the "existing" version Streak being released on Tmo in 2011 as well.
And as I mentioned above, I have also heard about a "more than 5 in. " Palm tabphone called the Mansion that is planned for March 11 release (yeah, I know... subject to slippage of course).... that will be on Sprint... which would work fine too.
So I guess I'm not feeling the need to do a teardown/rebuild yet... but thx again for the input... I still think it can be done but I'm also dealing with some other issues at the moment.
You cant just swap antennas, the circuit board and the software must be able to support. If this was possible somebody would have figured it out by now.

I'm having hard time understanding what the heck they can do *after* it's out...
I'm not planning getting any tablet but if I'd do I'd just kill/disable whatever service/app I want - it's mine, period. Then if I want to use Skype or a SIP app, I will, period. Heck, I root it if I want.

Hey, I was wondering if the i9000 will work with the 3g bands of t-mobile. And if not, will there be much of a difference when it comes to edge?
edge is so much slower than 3g is not even funny.
Why not just wait for it when it comes to T-Mobile at the end of June or beginning of July. It was already pretty much confirmed after some moron posted a video showing that it had all of the T-Mobile exclusive apps running on it.

If so, I think it was a pretty decent demo, and I think it may be a bit far to call him a moron. It seems stupid that t-mobile wouldn't want people to know that they will stock this phone, so how could this guy know that revealing the model number and t-mobile apps would be a problem?

Why did Verizon just fire the Gym employee who leaked the Shadow? Why did Apple press charges on the people involved with the iPhone leak? This guy should have known that wireless carriers don't like there devices being leaked from sources other than them. I am also surprised you wouldn't know that either.

He didn't exactly leak it though. He just reviewed an (announced and expected) device, and people pointed out that the model number was consistent for t-mobile phones. It's not like he even says "t-mobile" at any point, or emphasizes anything.
If anyone is moronic, it's the people who saw the logo for the text input app (write and go, i think its called), and assumed the big "T" indicated a t-mobile phone. See about 20seconds into this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sq4yXIKirVo

I thought folks would find this interesting, to say the least.
There has been a lot of rumor and theorizing about the infamous "Yellow Reset Button" believed by some to signify a new run of phones, supposedly marking the phones as after the first 50k production units. This may be entirely true, partially true, or a complete fabrication, elevated to the status of urban legend, right up there with "It is illegal to kill a Praying Mantis, and you will get a $50 fine if you do, LOL! (You won't trust me on THAT at least.)
So it was with some excitement that I received a "Yellow Button Special" as my 4th warranty refurb. Let's just say that it did not quite life up to the hype, and was the absolute worst as far as lock ups, and I had 3 previous ones to compare it with. Part of the reason I put this in the Energy Forum was a Tweet that our esteemed chef put out about 5-6 weeks ago, saying that he had a yellow reset button model and was experiencing nolockups. That's quite a claim to make for ANY Windows Mobile handset, but I do not doubt his observation. I do believe it was probably early in the testing of said phone, and that he could not have kept such a sparkling record going indefinitely.
So, by way of a long story, I come to the blasted point, LOL! Anyone who haunts this forum knows my posts tend to be... let's say verbose! Nevertheless, attached are two pictures of the Part Number for two phones, both refurbs, and both from T-Mobile Warranty Support. Called and pleased my case, whereupon T-Mobile agreed to send me handset #5 - yep. This is my fifth T-Mobile HTC HD2 Phone.
And? Its GREAT! It works better than any other one I have had, in particular the Bluetooth A2DP works to my stereo headset without cutting out. I have had no lockups in over a full weeks use, with multiple ROMs flashed to it. Display is perfect, sensitive (I know thats driver, not hardware related, but just sayin. I have put it through a pretty vigorous set of daily use testing, and it has been beautiful.
Now for the clincher, and it's nothing to do with a "Yellow Reset Button". If you must know it DOES have a yellow button, BUT: It also has a different part number
Check the attached pics, which I covered my IMEI and my S/N (paranoia, no other reason, he he)
I have checked Serial/IMEI and Part Numbers on each refurb they sent, and all have had the exact same part number. Until now, that is:
The old one reads: xxxxx001-00 B
The new one reads:xxxxx001-01 XB
What does this mean? As an expert witness for the prosecution I will TELL YOU! The answer is: I haven't a clue what it means, or if it means ANYTHING. I do know that it is significant, and to me, a different Part Number means a revision. What revision, and even if its a GOOD revision remains open to speculation. I prefer to think I have "One of the new, GOOD ones", LOL. But seriously I don't know. It would be interesting if anyone cares to track these and see what we can learn, if if anyone on the forum actually KNOWS what the bumped up part # signifies. Anyone have any info?
For me, i think the rumour that they changed the button to yellow because america expects small red dots to be water indicators holds more of a ring of truth than a build version marker. I just think it coincided with a second surge in production.
hmm...interesting...are you referring only to TMOUS version or European one as well. My HD2 for instance is European and P/N reads 02-00 C
Since november Ive only ever had one entirely solid and dependable HD2, it has a p/n ending in 039-00.
im quite curious to see how these numbers reflect on the time/location of production....
What are folks doing to their HD2 to have multiple ones?
I have the TMO launch HD2 and its fine. I have updated the unit to the TMO US firmware and its fine. The only problem I had, which is annoying and I wish someone could help me fix this, is that with Facebook V1.2, it doesnt retain my credentials. regardless if I click save. I am investigating, but if someone knows how to fix this, please advise.
Otherwise, the unit is fine.

Waiting by itself doesn't qualify having patience. Sometimes it means you don't understand the choice. The only real "disadvantage" in buying the Xoom now is the price. What about the Samsung tablet appeals to you more? Or was this purely about the Xoom?

Ha, was laughing at that too.
Am I missing something. What on earth makes the tablet by Samsung any better than one by motorola unless you are a homunculus incapable of holding a 1.6lb device but can hold a 1.3?
In all seriousness though, besides aestethics and brand preference I don't see the draw. I am seriously looking googling to try and find the big deal. Moto is a proven OEM in the Android world, and the XOOM is wide open and soon to be 4G capable. I see that the 10.1 is supposed to be HSPA 21+mbps so I am assuming T-Mo's fake 4G?
It seems it has a better rear camera, higher resolution video, optional capacities, and a proximity sensor(did they forget this isn't a phone) in the THINGS THE XOOM DON'T category.
It has a single instead of dual led flash, no new data tech, no HDMI, no barometer(hmmm someone tell me wtf a barometer is for) no external memory(which I will be using to put music on my tablet when I get a deal on a 32gb microsd, or so I tell myself), no ambient light sensor(I don't like autobrightness but I see the utility) in the THINGS THE XOOM DOES category.
Options are good but I don't get the point of this pointless thread .

I did not mention in my first post that I also bought the Xoom at Motorola for 25% off and I already have the UPS tracking number and it will be delivered this coming Monday. My bank statement has shown that the charge is complete.
So the price is not really the issue here.
I will not open my Xoom on Monday when I received it but will wait for March 22 to decide.
Biggest advantages of the Samsung tablet are the following:
1. Lighter weight
2. Most likely a better screen (brighter/better contrast). You look at the screen 100% of the time when you use a tablet (unless you just listen to music) so this is very important.
Big disadvantage
1. May not be rootable
Like I mentioned, you don't seem to understand the choice if those are your only disadvantages. I get that you're waiting, I just find your attitude funny.

Your a better man than me. Me, personally I will never buy another samsung product. What shortcomings does the Xoom have that the 10.1 won't have? From what I have read the 10.1 is inferior spec wise to the Xoom althoigh they are very close.

And without any brand fanboi-ism here, I'd have to agree. The GPS on the Acer works great for me - as long as you're connected to the Internet. Which requires Wireless. Which kind of assumes you aren't driving. There are some "hacks" to help improve that which seem to work pretty well, but it's a workaround and not an out-of-box solution.
Yes GPS works without Internet, but not as well.
But, I think we can mostly agree the OP is doing a bit of trolling, intentionally or not...

I don't know if it would constitute trolling. A "troll" is someone who says something for the sole purpose of enraging someone else. I think he was just expressing rage he felt himself.
To be honest, I share his pain. I'm considering taking mine back and giving it a third go because of the shoddy GPS.
There is no question that Acer provides poor build construction; but you get what you pay for. The A500 is the cheapest of the "me too" tablets, and it shows. They cheaped out on certain parts to bring the price down. Though, they are also claiming to have sold over a million units, so I guess the strategy is working. In retrospect, I wonder how many of the million units got returned.
What irks me is the complete lack of support from Acer. I've been investigating the GPS issue for a while, and it seems as though Acer is aware of the issue and is now starting to rationalize it, which is never a good sign. I've seen people claim that Acer has told them that the GPS isn't meant to be used for navigation; I've seen people claim that Acer techs have told them outright that GPS doesn't exisit on this model. I've been personally told by Acer that I could send it back in, but it would be on my dime because fixing the GPS constitutes an "upgrade" from original functionality.
Acer is playing the "max units sold" game to try and gain brand recognition in a vain attempt to overtake the iPad, and hoping they don't lose too many customers in the process to defective units.
If you want superior build quality, iPad is second to none. Hopefully the up-coming android tablets give us some more options. Best of luck on whatever you choose.
Cheers,
-PW

In regards to the GPS I never noticed it before reading lots of posts here, then again I use my cell phone for that since that has constant internet connection.
Sorry for typos using A500 and holding newborn at the same time.
Good luck with the new tablet hope its everything you are looking for.

Seconded. Not very fun to try to use a 10 inch tablet for GPS - that's why I have my El cheapo Virgin Mobile samsung intercept for - 25$ a month, rooted, fits my car mount, provides a unlimited 3g hotspot for my a500

Which is why I really, really don't understand why folks are crying over below-average GPS performance on **WIFI ONLY** tablets.
And if you're using your phone as a wifi hotspot in conjunction with a 10" tablet--in your car--you might as well just use your damn phone as a GPS or get a 3G capable tablet.

Could not agree more. Don't buy a wifi only tablet and expect to use it for navigation - that is just a bit silly.

Well there are apps such as CoPilot which just needs to have a GPS. Though it is a bit idiotic to use a 10" tablet as a navigator, it does not justify the malfunction of the GPS unit!
i.e. in Acer they build crap and QA just approve the crap and then we consumer help them out.
First of all it is not a cheap tablet, cheap to me means something in range of Chinese knock-offs.
Second to that, somebody here read warranty to me that we should accept what they produce since in warranty says everything is "AS-IS". Should consumers really buy crapware since brands says so?

I have not seen much about this phone. It's a cheap ( no exact price yet) small sized phone to test out tmobile's lte if you want to think about switching away from big V like me.

1.4ghz Quad core with 1GB system memory and 8GB internal storage. It also has an 1800 mah battery and microsd.

Currently listed on hsn.com for 199.95. Noticed via prepaidphonenews.com. Looking forward to hear from someone about unlocked bootloader status and partition arrangement.

Just noticed, among the features listed on hsn.com is something called "secure boot." Why does that sound like something I don't want? And they mention it as if it's a good thing.

Now $149. I'd grab it if I could root it. Zero development on this device and this is the only thread even discussing it. Shame but not surprising. You're almost better off to get an old phone that has plenty of options than a new one with none.
Sounds very interesting. I hope it will be released in Europe soon too.
I've read that that it reaches an antutu score around ~17000+. First an only 4'' phone with a quad core at the moment.!
But, does anybody know if it has a light sensor to adjust the brightness automatically?
Lol some guy wanted to trade me the Light for my One S...
Seeing that its pretty...new and no dev'ment yet, its a no.
Thats the same exact reason I got rid of my ol Boost Mobile LG Venice.
Besides, I'm not a fan of mediocre carrier service.
It sounds appealing though, i mean 1gb ram tied in with quad core, clocked at 1.4GHz not bad.
But its using TFT screen technology sized at 4 inches, a 5mp cam and a 0.3mp front. What sort of odd combo is that?
At least they should have given it an AMOLED then maybe the miniature screen would make some sense.
If you ask me, its like a merged Galaxy Prevail and a Galaxy S. Good for those who want something cheap yet preformance
worthy (I guess) but for a quad core device, ratings for it on many review sites are depressingly low. Hey at least it
has NFC, but still all that preformance on a TFT screen will make playing games feel like your on an older device.
I think the screen alone was a let down for me.
It does not make my list, nor capture my attention. My guess is, NAY.
I just got this phone. Any clue how to root it? I don't want to brick it following the s4 method.
Does anyone know how to network unlock this phone?
I just got this phone before leaving on vacations and can't seem to find a way to network unlock it so that I can use it outside the U.S.
I have tried all popular unlocking methods for S3's and S4's but none seems to work.
There is another thread about rooting this phone, but noone has figured out how to do it, just yet. I guess the new kernel is causing some issues. Anyway, the other thread is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2539232 I will be picking this phone up as soon as I am able. The small size and the quad core and the speed is also what I have read. As I am not a gamer, the screen is fine. LTE and NFC are features I would use. It's like Samsung figured out that if a user isn't gaming, a big high-end screen isn't as important as speed of connectivity. The gamers have the S4. The rest of us get the Light.

There is one. Stock, but debloated and optimized. I have not tried it myself yet, as I don't have a 2nd phone in case things go awry, But it looks very promising.

He also said he's going to attempt a Cyanogenmod 11 port. And if you excuse the archaic vernacular, that would be the bees' knees.
FYI, you can get the Galaxy Light brand new from T-Mobile for $100 right now.

Mine is rooted stock and I agree, Lightwave looks nice. The price at t-mobile just came down and I suspect Samsung will be ending the Light and releasing something of lower quality. You can't beat 4 bucks a month. Snap it up while you can.

So I was going to try the LightWave ROM but I have some concerns... Is this going to lock my SIM out, and keep me from accessing my network? Because,I also do not have a second phone to goof off with this one, and if I brick (or worse, get locked out of the data network)I'm screwed. So does anyone know if this locks out T-Mobile's network? Thanks in advance!
On an irrelevant side note, if anyone is using a stock (w/root) ROM and are tired of TouchWiz, I actually figured out how to dump it! There is an app in the Google Play store called "System app remover (ROOT)" and all i did was looked for touchwiz in the app and deleted it. Sorry for rambling.

I can't guarantee you won't brick your phone. Nobody can guarantee anything when you start flashing things. Once you have TWRP though, it's really hard to screw things up irreparably.

That's dangerous. I wouldn't recommend doing that, but if you must, always do backups first.
