I had my evo since last november. Great phone. Joined XDA in January and never looked back. Just wanted to thank everyone on these evo forums for all the help and wonderful roms, etc.
I have decided to opt out of my contract with that recent sprint change and moved to tmobile. Nothing to do with the evo. its sprint in phoenix. Just couldnt take the slow 3g anymore.
Like the title says, evo will always have a place in my pocket
I will be over at the g2x forums but Ill always come back here to see whats new with (what I consider) one of the best Android phones ever made.
Would like to add, i like sprint as a whole. Theyve been very good and work with me so this is not a blast against them either. Just need faster internet for my day to day activities.

My evo is for sale if someone should happen to PM me.

Pretty positive that on the plan you're talking about you get 200mb a month and then you're throttled to EDGE speeds.

The prepaid plan lists the first 100mb as 4g speeds, so since looking at it I still assume the other data will be at 3g speeds, and even at edge speeds I don't mind. I hardly use my phone on the 3g modem enough as it is, only for facebook and small things like that.

I just want to make sure before I buy this phone that it will work on Simple Mobile at 3G speeds at the very least... HSPA+ maybe in the future?
I dont want to get it if it wont work since I dont want to be on slow EDGE for ATT and dont want to pay a premium if I am going to use TMOBILE service anyways.
Thanks.

Simple Mobile is intriguingly priced.
The Nexus One will never work on the HSPA+ network any faster than the regular HSPA network; the hardware isn't HSPA+ compatible.

if your phone providers works on 900/1700/2100 then it will work for you, else no
Simple Mobile is a T-Mobile reseller so yes it will work.
Since it is a Tmobile phone it seems like 3G should be good.. how about HSPA+???
I know the Mytouch4G is good and the G2 but nowhere does it say on the NExus S it is HSPA+.... anyone know if that will work at the SUPER FASTER SPEEDS?

HSPA maxes out at 7.2mbs, HSPA+ at ~22mbs but the MT4G/G2 max at ~14.4mbs if i recall correctly.
On average, I see around 2.5mbs to 3.8mbs on my Nexus which was about the same as I was seeing on my MT4G oddly enough. The G2 was getting 4-8mbs

Yep, same here. My Nexus One barely pulled >1mbs. Everyone hails that phone as the greatest thing since sliced bread, and don't get me wrong it was pretty damn great, but it had several flaws too such as the poor 3G reception I'm citing here.
Simple mobile gets t-mobile speed. I am proof that this work. Everything works except 4g since nexus s doesn't have that but I get amazing 3g speed.

I would be happy with a consistent 3.0mb. within a span of 3 miles I can go from 5mb to less than 1mb and lots of areas still are edge
last time i did a speed test maxed out at 2.8 Mbps down on Wind Mobile
and it was even less on Rogers / Fido, so i'm very happy
So finally pulled the trigger... TRUE 3g speed on this phone. I couldn't be any happier.
Only problem is T-Mobile network isn't the largest so I have a lot of edge network areas. When 3g is running its pretty darn quick though.
All for 60 unlimited....

Thats awesome. I have been contemplating getting SIMple Mobile for use on my MT4G or G2, but, I have been thinking about getting a NS to use on SM.
Do any of the Visual Voicemail apps work on this (or any T-Mo phone) using SIMple Mobile? It is my understanding that any FlexPay or Pre-Paid providers cannot offer any type of Visual Voicemail services. I know, Google Voice would work ok, but I'm not happy with their UI, and other aspects of GV.
If any Visual Voicemail apps would work with SIMple Mobile, flawlessly, then I'm sold on both SM & NS.
Any help would be most appreciated.
Just figured I would give you guys thinking of moving to Simple a heads up. Their "unlimited" data is capped at 1GB. There have been reports of them shutting down your service once you reach this and charging you for prepaid data to continue use. Do your research before you jump especially if you like to tether or do a lot of streaming.

I've read the same thing on HowardForums. Since it's prepaid, you can pay for the service but they can disconnect the data anytime they want during that month.
I'm paying $55.99 a month on a non-contract basis right now, gives me 500 minutes and unlimited data. For SMS I simply use Google Voice which is free. I use it as my primary number instead of the T-Mobile one. I don't know my T-Mobile number even.
So for $60 a month, seems like Simple Mobile is more expensive and its very likely that Simple Mobile's contract for data is rather expensive hence why they cap at 1gb of data. I wouldn't expect you to ever be allowed to go past that given that MVNO's make much less profit overall.
I considered it, but quickly abandoned the plan. If it was actually cheaper (for me) I'd be willing to try it.

Woah 1GB data cap? Seems like a plan that would be good for parents, grandparents, or busy businesspeople who don't have the time/desire to do anything but light data use.
Glad you mentioned this, I was actually thinking of trying out the service.
How does Sprint go about choosing cities for 4G? Also, when will most smaller "cities" finally have 4G? A year from now? Sooner, later? Does Sprint have any publication outlining their plans? I live Columbia, SC, and right now speeds are slllowwww on 3G. So when is YOUR city getting 4G? We've all been payin for it!
good luck finding that information out. I tried to contact sprint about those exact things and got the same bs over and over and over and over (yes four times )
Slowly
I live in Greenville and someone that works for Clearwire said they have one tower in the area but that's it so far. I'm not getting my hopes up for a full rollout any time soon and after getting to use 4G recently, I don't really care anymore either. T-Mobile's 3G is faster than what I've personally seen from Sprint's 4G, my wife and I are switching this summer when our ETF drops to $50/line.
I know. They pick a random city and provide customers with very spotty coverage that barely penetrates walls
You need to carry around a ghost buster battery pack to fully utilize 4G constantly any how. The only time I use 4G is when I'm plugged into a power source or to watch one video if needed. Almost useless pretty much, I'm in a 4G area and I'm using a rom without 4G and I'm just fine.

I highly doubt this is the case. There are many examples where their roll out does not follow suit
I have to agree with elegantai, that seems like the most likely answer. I'm definitely not complaining though, they just turned it on here within the last week.
I've been wondering how they decide their rollouts. I have a feeling that the commercial is spot on
But anyway, I can't wait to try some day to day use here at KU. Been to KC a couple times and was blown away by how fast it was. 4G is supposed be activated here in a month or two, so stoked.

Wait... so you're saying that you tether for free via root without paying? You're happy about that?
You do realize that Sprint's 3G network is PATHETICALLY slow? The slowest of the big four by a pretty healthy margin. So you're advocating overloading an already overloaded network without contributing to a damn near profitless company?
No, I actually don't use tethering. I'm just pointing out that I am happy to have Sprint. I'm sure many people do though. Why would I use my phone to tether when I can have speeds like this? That would be dumb.

I'm paying for unlimited data and I should be able to use the data that I am paying for however I want to use it, which includes tethering. Asking for an $30 extra charge for an arbitrary usage of data is what I would call stealing.

You're paying for data, on your PHONE not to be shared with whatever other device you have, this is not a home ISP. That's like saying you're paying $50 a week for unlimited gas but you are filling up every car in your neighborhood. Not only will this cause gas prices to go up because you're abusing it but will also put an end to others getting this deal. Shame that people don't see this.

I am a former att customer that received that letter and warning. The only thing is I never teather! Ever! I have had an iphone, but years ago. I was at the time using a htc inspire on the unlimited. I use roughly 4-6gb a month on just my phone. I think why people are getting these is cause the amount of data people are using. I'm pretty sure that's why I got one. Just not really sure if they can really tell if your teathering or just basing it off usage.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App
Really it should be one or the other. Data cap or no tethering. If you are capped st 2gb who the hell cares if you tether. You go over it's your ass. If you have unlimited data and tether your laptop to run netflix and torrent the latest movies using 15gb+ every month then you deserve a kick in the balls.
I don't mind sprint's 30$ tether charge. it makes sense on an unlimited plan. if I need internet on other devices it's not a bad option for someone who wouldn't want to sign another contact for internet. And the 1mbps or so 3g I get here ain't bad for that.
I don't need it though and have used root to tether for free and though I have downloaded a couple movies with it (at the horrible 50-100kbps 3g in new mexico) I have yet to exceed 5gb.
I don't condemn using over 10gb a month on occasion but to consistently abuse sprint's unlimited data is just out right stealing.

Did someone hurt your feelings or something. Do you work for Att? Then why does someone posting negative articles about them bother you so much? Oh and what ****ty Sprint speeds are you talking about? My speeds are damn fast.

BS comparison. I usually agree with you but not on tethering I guess.

Your small little observation means very little. A recent nationwide speed test found Sprint to be nearly dead last with all carriers, not just the big four.
Why am I mad? There was a day when Sprint used to do 1.5-2+ Mbps with ease in NYC. Ease. Sprints network is having a crunch right now and I'm lucky to get 750 kbps now. All you freeloading bastards aren't helping.

His comparison is right. Mobile data isn't finite. Its significantly more limited than land data. Control is needed to maintain a fast, stable mobile network. A network with unlimited data is no different and needs more control if anything. Your paying for service on your phone and nothing more.

Nationwide speed tests mean nothing to me, as I only plan on using my phone in limited areas anyway. This is why you should always test drive the network for the 30 days they give you, not just pick a phone on any carrier.
My speeds are consistently above 1mbps here in the Seattle area, not EVERYWHERE is having issues although it seems there are a lot who do.

They tested pretty much all major cities. None averaged more than 1 mbps but its worth noting that they hit peaks of over 2 mbps. The thing is that I can say that I hit 1.x mbps in NYC, and I have, but my average experience is significantly slower than that.
This test showed that not only were Sprints peaks slower but their averages were too. And this is in pretty much all major cities.
Their nationwide average taken from the testing of most major cities put Sprint in nearly last. This wasn't the first time they did these tests either. What this showed is that Sprint slowed significantly year to year.

Nuff said. But just in case.
short: It's not "theft of service". Sorry. Nothing is being stolen (go look up what steal/theft means). You might however, be in breach of contract. That's about it.

Keeping the faith on CM9.
Sent from my PC36100.
Without a doubt there will be a port for ICS on this phone. Money has it that even the G1 will get a working port.
Even if there isnt a port, I plan on keeping my evo until Sprint rolls out their LTE network and the new phones are out.

That is my plan also.
My plan as well. I am not the type that needs to get a new phone at the drop of a hat, but when LTE rolls out on Sprint, that will be my queue.

The only way I'll give my evo up is if they get any kind of towers up in my area beside the junk 3g service i get now. I'm just glad I can get wifi, in just about every inch of my town that is unsecured.
I'm keeping my EVO until i have the money to switch to AT&T for the Galaxy Nexus.
Sorry that you want to go to AT&T. Been there done that. And there is a reason why I am with Sprint now.
For the people waiting for the new phones, you wont get unlimited internet since you will have to change your plan.
And yes the EVO will get ICS. HTC may even release a version for it. They just have not committed to it yet. But don't get your hopes up.

I dunno what you experienced, but everyone around me in Dallas with AT&T is pulling 5mb+ on 3G. My buddy at A&M says he's pulled even faster speeds down there. Unlimited data doesn't mean squat at less than 150kbs.
Nope. Ill probably downgrade to a 3g only phone or even VirginMobile. I use like 600MB per month cuz im always on a wifi.
HTC Evo 4G | Deck AOSP 2.3.7 | Tiamat 4.0.5-sbc
Nope. I'd start working on the ICS build myself.
And even though this isn't the case, and CM9 is all but guaranteed to show up on the Evo (as it's in the top 3 devices they have users for, iirc), I'm still planning on helping out.

Source??
This is the only differentiator Sprint has and the only thing keeping me from heading to Verizon who has significantly better coverage in my area (even with my Airvana at home).
I don't see anything that says you lose unlimited internet for upgrading your phone and why would you need to change plans anyway??
Or are you saying Sprint isn't getting the new phones? or that you'll have to change plans when LTE rolls out?

Don't really care much for ICS but I will be keeping my Evo until Sprint releases a decent WP7 LTE capable phone. (if ever)

He is talking about if u jump from sprint to Verizon since they don't have unlimited nor does anyone else n no way to get it and if ur not going to use 2 gigs. does the speed matter? I know it helps with youtube vids or whatever but youtube lags n sucks even on cable or dsl. What ull be able to load web pages faster woo exciting.

Never happen.
CM9 or a good AOSP are our best bet. I've been giving the GS II 4G a long hard look, but a nice AOSP ICS build with 4G working would keep me happy for a while longer.
I'd dump Sense for ICS AOSP easy.
Hey, if ICS never get ported maybe we can hold out for Jelly Bean (j/k)
My EVO does everything I need it to do and I don't see any compelling reason to upgrade until sprint flips on the LTE switch in my area and pushes out a decent ICS/LTE phone. Of course by the time that happens Google will be prepping Marshmallow for release... I'm on wifi 99% of the day, though I can appreciate peeps agrivation with Sprint that do rely on mobile data. I suspect my EVO 4G will die with only about 5 minutes of Wi-Max use to it's credit. That makes me face a little.
Read today that the nexus 1 will not get an official release of ics due to hardware. Adreno 200 issues? I don't know. I'm sure there will be a port though.
