Okay, after much hemmin' and hawin', my girlfriend has decided that she wants an Android phone to replace her aging Crackberry Tour. The phone has served she and I rather reliably for almost 3 years, but she played with her friend's Fascinate, she got wet for the Sammy. For some reason she hates my Evo and thinks it is too big. So it is down to the Epic 4G (because she wants a bloody keyboard). I am trying to talk her into either the Shift or the NS4G but that may be difficult. If I gotta get her the Epic, I will. I liked the phone when I had it for 2 weeks as a demo, but I know the support for it from both the Dev standpoint and the Android standpoint blows.
Either way she goes, the phone is getting rooted. Too bad she likes iOS, er Touchwiz.
Have you shown her miui?

Not yet. I may do that after I root it. If she doesn't like it, I will get her back to TW.
My son insisted on a keyboard too. I got him the Shift and he loves it.
The Evo is pretty damn big but my GF got one after her Epic had so many problems stock. I say avoid and get the Shift.

Just leave her phone stock. She could care less if its rooted, and it will save you the headache of dealing with her complaining when something goes wrong.

Actually, she works in IT and she wants me to root it for her. She can TS her own issues once she has it and I show her a few things. I am not worried about her complaining. She is fed up with the Crackberry and the hybrids that she had loaded on it.

My wife has a shift as well, so I rooted, etc for her. But, using that thing after using, and being used to, both the ogevo and Evo3D is a nightmare for me, lol. The buttons are NOT where my fingers think they 'should be', and every time I have to use her Shift, I just want to throw it through the nearest window. It IS fast, and it DOES run smoothly, however.

i have a shift use it mostly for movies videos and shows. when the wife uses it she types away on the keyboard and likes it. good battery life also. ( after rooting and adjustments.)
Have her feel both phones one after the other. The shift feels just so much better.

Right out of the box, nothing done to it at all. It didn't make it through the 30 day return policy. It was more like 2 weeks.
Well, I gave her the phone last night and she loves it. It helps that it's rooted with the latest GB update.
I had forgotten how much nicer the Galaxy S screens were than the Evo.

Really?
I'll go with the lack of Dev support and poor manufacturer support. Samsung is concerned with pushing new products on you, not with supporting products you have already purchased. Everyone knows the over hyped galaxy S line is still on 2.1 while everyone else is about to go to 2.3 and beyond.
If that's "FSD", then I have it too.

I have an HTC Touch I'm willing to trade.
This has been a telepathic transmission from the Outer Limits.
I actually LOVED my last Samsung.. (forget the name, it was the flat flip phone a couple yrs back)... BUT....
That being said, I actually GOT an epic the 1st week it was out... when the stores were out of the Evo's.
I played with a friends Evo and returned the Epic the next day.
It was mostly because of the "feel" of the phone. Cheap imo compared to the bulk feel of the Evo.
I'm hard on phones and the wobbly slider moved everytime I lifted it to my ear. It just felt too plastic-y to me.
The screen was def. beautiful but not worth it to be. If I watching movies or playing games, or wasn't so rough on phones I may have very well stuck with the Epic. But the Evo is for me. I think it just depends on what you are wanting out of your phone.

The Evo takes damn good pictures. So good, in fact, that I gave my camera to a friend of mine because her phone sucks at taking pictures.
As for the Epic, I still have the files to restore Epic to stock and unrooted because my friend owns an Epic and can't seem to get any decent rom installed without a plethora of instructions.
Instructions for flashing a rom on an evo:
boot into recovery
wipe all
flash rom
*flash kernel (optional)*
*flash themes (optional)*
reboot
enjoy
for like 95% of our roms and only the really experimental ones don't follow that process. The epic? you have to use odin, you have to install multiple files (like CM, but more frustrating), then you have to worry about compatibility. My friend hasn't been able to flash a stable froyo rom yet and we have stable gingerbread roms with 4g. Ridiculous.
Samsung used to build a great phone, I was a big fan of the Rant for awhile. It was heavy, durable and actually good looking. The epic looks like a slider smartphone would've looked 2 years ago. Thick, plastic, cheap feeling, light and thick. However, it is an Android phone, which makes it 100 times better than an iPhone.
I'm an Android fanboy, I'll admit it. I've used W7 and iOS and I just don't feel the power user love that I feel with an Android phone

So...I've had my Nexus S 4G for 2 weeks now, and I have to say, the first few days I was having trouble justifying the off contract price of the phone, especially when my Epic was perfectly fine.....
Fast forward to the first week, I was really liking how well it fit in my pocket, not to mention the battery life stock, and the GPS lock in seconds...awesome.
I also decided to root and try CM7, and I've been running it for a week so far, and I'll say it's changed my mind, and I'm definitely keeping this phone now!
And the ONLY thing I missed from my epic was the camera button, and today fooling around with my Nexus, I found that in CM7 you can assign the volume buttons to take pictures, EFFIN AWESOME!

So did the Sprint employees look at you funny when you bought it off contract for full retail?
I've always wondered what they think when enthusiasts come in and lay down half a grand on a phone... It's an expensive hobby.
I also came from the Epic... it's hard to tell they have the same hardware inside.
I don't see myself ever buying a non nexus device again..(here is hoping Sprint continues to play a role in the Nexus devices!!) Android is at it's best when it's running as Google intended. Not to mention the updates and development..
Anyways. Welcome glad you like it.

The sprint stores always seemed surprised. Best buy and the T-Mobile stores never blinked an eye. I've purchased 6 phones at full retail and only got an odd response once (from a Sprint employee).
Having gone from the Nexus One to this phone (and I'll buy the next Nexus phone as well) I hope it comes to Sprint. Otherwise I'll have to jump carriers again.

So I'm positive everyone see's this question all the time. But they always judge it on the stock phones. Well I'm looking to get one of these phones, but to ROOT them. Which one do you believe I should get and why? I'm also looking into battery life even though buying an extended battery isn't a problem. Also which rom do you think is best for your pick? Thanks in advance.
Will be posting in both sides to get more answers
Easy answer... look at the topics and responsees in both forums and decide which group you would rather deal with...
And then look at the rom and root options of both. HTC is on a whole nother level.

This. And I own an Epic (my wife has the shift). I'd never trade my Epic in for anything, at least at this point, but yeah the Epic forum is full of complainers, trolls, and guys with tiny wangs (or so I assume with how they have to constantly act like king s**t in the forums all of the time). And shift has a ton more devs, plus working cm7. But the phone itself is sweet, and faster (in my opinion, with the right rom), and has an independent number row. And the screen is bigger and looks nicer. I could go on and on about differences, but I've gotta run for now.

From everything I've heard, the CPU in the shift has the edge on the Epic, but the GPU in the Epic edges out the Shift. If battery life is important to you, I say hands down go with the Shift. I easily get a full day every day and my friend with an epic is always asking people for chargers, even changed all his backgrounds to black to save battery (doesn't save on LCD but on LED it does). He does everything he can and still struggles for a full day out of the thing. Now I speak from what he's told me, I've never owned an Epic myself. Overall I've been thrilled with the shift, does everything I ask of it with no lag and no complaints.

I certainly had this issue on stock rom on the Epic. I couldn't even make it through a work shift without the battery dying. But custom roms on the Epic blow that out of the water. I now can go a whole day of moderate usage and still have around 30-40%. But I don't know, I'm guessing with a custom rom the Shift still kicks the Epic's ass battery-wise. My wife is running CM7 (which the Epic may not see for a looong time), and I don't ever see her reaching for a charger or complaining of the battery. And being of the female variety, she tends to use a lot of the live wallpapers, widgets, etc...

The Shift now comes stock with Gingerbread from Sprint. There is no way to root it. You are SOL. I pulled all of my hair out when I figured this out.
Turns out Android (maybe not "Android", but the current ecosystem) sucks hard. Suckers like you and I come online and see threads and guides about rooting that simply won't ever work on our devices because they've been manufacturer updated. And sites like this don't seem to give a damn -- at least update the root "guide", mods.
Quite worthless. Don't fall for this BS. The Shift is again unrootable, just like almost all updated phones from Sprint. Chances are, with the devs having moved on or got lucky enough to have an old version of Android when they got theirs, all new ones will remain unrootable forever. #@(*$

You need to take a breather my friend. The stock 2.3 will get rooted in time, just like the 2.2 did. "Unrootable forever" is just an ignorant statement. If all you're gonna do is rant and rave a bunch of misinformation, please keep the post to yourself.
Back on topic...
I have a shift and purchased the Epic for my wife.
The Epic display is nicer, and the epic actually feels lighter (and is?) Than my shift. It also has more keys on the keyboard.
However, on stock ROMs my shift seems faster and has better battery life. UI's are a very personal preference, but I much prefer the HTC sense and overall software stack vs Samsung's touchwiz. It just seems to work better.
I've beeen running custom ROMs on my shift and most of them work well. About ready to try a custom ROM on the Epic to see if it works better...

ive been very happy with both my shift and the dev community here (who have turned me from an ignorant n00b-lout into a root-user) and all those who have helped me try and solve my problems.
As for rooting gingersense, it will happen soon enough, just give the devs here some time.
My wife has the Epic and I have the Shift 4G. I can't stand her phone, and she can't stand mine. Tho we both take our phone's off the charger in the morning and when we drive home, mine still is in the green where she has to use the car charger going home. Then again, neither of our phones are rooted. I have rooted her phone in the past, didn't seem to make much difference. Still running the crappy samsung software.

Looks like Sprint is going to have to give me a new phone since I'm on my third Shift since release, and this one has major antenna problems (lose data, can't make calls half the time, texts are intermittent, etc.). So I'm wondering if I should try one more shift or actually get an Evo. I'm not getting a Samsung device, they just feel like crap to me.
I don't know what to do darnit lol.
You could see if they'll give you an EVO 3D.

I say stick with the Shift . But I'm biased. Love my Shift, hands down best phone I've ever owned. I had an EVO before this. The EVO is a great phone. But a little too big for the pocket. Plus the Shift can be OC'd way higher. But either way your good. Plenty of Dev's on both phones. Plus you can run some awesome Mik roms on both. Just my two cents.

I looked at the 3D, but it just seems gimmicky to me.
The Evo is likely my best option, but I'll certainly miss the keyboard. I even thought about the Nexus S or Epic, but I just hate the feel of Samsung phones, so I don't think they're an option. I'm not entirely sure they'll let me get another Shift, but if they do you can bet I'm asking for a new one and not a refurb
I've rooted all three Shifts multiple times, the first two were hardware issues (loose keyboard--me being too picky, then a loose ear speaker). Rooting it didn't help the service issues a bit on this third one, which is what leads me to believe there's an antenna issue

Rooting it didn't help the service issues a bit on this third one, which is what leads me to believe there's an antenna issue

if you think the 3d part of the evo3d is gimmicky, just ignore it and realize its a really a CDMA version of the HTC Sensation. One of the best phones on the market.
The shift is a great device, but the 3d blows it out of the water.

Isn't the screen always in a "3D mode" though? I've only seen a 3D once, and only from the side, and it looked pretty weird at that angle. I'll have to go to a store and check it out
ok i my shift has a major antenna problems also i got one phone sent out but do they still change the phones for you?? and whats the $ for say a reg evo . i got my phone over clocked to 1.5 and sprint keeps telling me slower data due to the cpu is 800 not 1ghz like the evo i wish i could tell sprint a thing or too

Well, if you've still got the problems keep calling and complaining. The Evo and the Shift should be an even swap I think. I haven't called them to find out yet.
Granted, I'm on an employee plan and go through employee care tech support, so the rules and prices are a little different.
edit: guess I didn't have a choice...they're sending me yet another Shift, and probably another freaking refurbished one at that.
Well on the upside, since your on your fourth Shift. My buddy works for Sprint. You can actually request/ demand it be a new one. Also, if your unsatisfied with this one new/other. You can request they give you a different device equal to the Shift.

If I could get them to exchange my Shift for a refurb, I'd never activate it and have it on ebay so fast...then get something else...something that can be rooted. For now, I'll just be patient.

They told me that after my third one I could get a "like device", which I took to mean any device of a similar price range, guess I was wrong, or they were yanking my chain.

A refurb shift is likely not upgraded to 2.3.3 or whatever the upgrade was to--yet. This one's a week old and didn't come upgraded, so root was quite easy, even though it didn't help
It's definately a plus if you can still root it.

I certainly hope so. The first two just had minor problems, but the network issues with this one was unbearable

I don't actually work for them, my fiance does lol. The biggest perks about the employee plans are the much lower prices, yearly upgrades, no actual contract, and quicker tech support.
well, I got the new phone in the mail, activated it this morning. Other than having a somewhat loose slider again (which is going to be extremely annoying) it looks like it might work.
updated to 2.3.3 though, so that kind of sucks at the moment.

When my wife had the Samsung moment, I had to go through so many devices before they would offer me something comparable. Which was the intercept, an even worse phone. Not even the Hero was an option! Ended up emailing [email protected] and then reporting to BBB and finally got my upgrade reset. It was a total PITA.
So I just bought the Evo Thursday unaware I can't root the phone. That was the main reason I bought it was to root it, but now it seems im screwed. I need help deciding should I get the Nexus s or keep the Evo, I did some research and the Nexus sounds great and I know it doesn't have a sd slot but it has 16gb built in. Im using a 8gb card and not planning on upgrading. So what should I do I hate a stock phone and most of my apps is for a rooted phone. What would you do?

you should wait until devs find an exploit for evo, its way better than the NS4G
You got 30 days to return it so you could wait, there are some rumors that a few devs are close to getting root on the Evo 4, or just go ahead and take it back. It's really up to you. I liked the Nexus but the fact it didn't have a removable sd card makes me not like it, maybe thats a dumb reason but thats why I didn't like it.

I have both, the NS4G is without a doubt better. There was a issue with the performance of the radio for some people, and that was a major gripe for some people that I think would stop be me from fully recommending but it's a getting updated to Android 2.3.5 with fixes to the radio on Monday.
It's waaaayyy too late to get the EVO 4G. The NS4G is half as old and the tech while slightly better/same (and in the case of the GPU, way more), will get STABLE updates through 2012 I bet. You'll feel a lot better having a NS4G late 2011 - early 2012 guaranteed.
Way better is a little bit of a stretch, but you will be better off with a ROOTED evo. But its anyone's guess when s-off will be achieved with the new h-boot so if you need to be rooted the Nexus is a good choice. I own both phones and I wouldn't keep an unrootable GB evo, no way. I got lucky and scored 2 new in the box s-off evos last weekend so my Nexus is on the nightstand till we get the ota to hopefully fix its only downfall, a horrible radio. Upside of nexus is no workarounds for GPS to work running aosp, it always works and no battery issues that I've experienced. I've tried every GPS driver and fix on my evo and android sytem just kills my battery. If I don't install maps and turn off location and GPS battery life on the evo is as good as the nexus.
Just wanted to chime in since I do own both phones. I'd get a nexus for now and if you don't like it, you will have no problems getting a mint s-off evo down the road.

LOL! Def go with the NSG4g.
http://www.infosyncworld.com/reviews/cell-phones/nexus-s-4g-review/12017.html
My cousin just traded his EvO in for NSG4G.. and he won't look back. Plus its a google phone, its faster, better hardware, and better screen. You have CM7, MIUI, and other custom Roms as well. Just my 2c.

Thanks for the video and reply I love what im hearing because I had a MT4g and all I used was CM7 because I cant stand sense so this is perfect for me. The only real plus I have for the EVO IMO is the screen size and camera but I dont take many pics maybe a couple a month if that so I think I will do the trade in.

Thats was a concern going in was the EVO too old to be buying
FWIW, the Nexus S line is pretty old too, but still younger than the EVO.
My vote is for the Nexus S 4G. You already said you don't like Sense. So it makes 'sense' to just get the NS4G. Like others have said, you have 30 days so you could wait and keep the EVO and hope for root if you are sold on the phones hardware.

Great idea and if/when all is fix I can root because sprint will charge me 35 extra to restock
Here's my two cents.
On topic, Nexus s.
Off topic a bit, if at all possible go with the evo 3d.
It is the 4g with more ram and processor than the nexus s and the 4g. The 4G is a year old and past its prime. The NS is 6months old and not as good as the 3d.
Back on topic for a lower price the NS4G is the way to go.

I owned two Nexus 4g phones and sold them both (returning to my Evo 4G) for the following reasons:
-radio issues = miserable battery life! No joke, 5-6 hours with moderate use. I get twice that time with the Evo 4G. (The new OTA update is supposed to help with WIFI and 4G, NOT 3G, which is where part of the problem lies.
-feels cheap! flimsy, hard, slippery plastic does not feel good in the hand.
-the screen is not better than the Evo 3D. Nexus colors are over saturated, so skin tones are RED, etc. I guess some people like that, but I prefer more accurate colors. And the screen have a green tint.
I suggest you do to a Sprint store and try them out side-by-side. That is the only way to really compare them IMO.
If the ns4g doesn't have synergy then it just isn't cool.

Thanks guys Im going to wait about 25 day to see what develops with the Evo and if nothing I'll have a few days to see whats out there because I see the Photon is due out July 31 and it has a dual processorfor a hundred bucks more....it could be a epic win
I'd grab a nexus s. It'll get software faster than any other phone and its got super amoled screen.

Do not listen to this advice. It couldn't be more bias and wrong. I would say get the nexus s if you like aosp roms. If you want sense then you will need to wait until an exploit is found for root.
