Galaxy tab 10.1 support and community size - Galaxy Tab 10.1 General

What's the support and community size of the Galaxy tab 10.1 right now? I tried to do a search and I only found this forum to be the most active. Im curious because the tablet looks great but I also do like the idea of having development and a support community. The Xoom and Transformer seem to have a decent sized community. I'm just worried i'll have this badass tablet with no roms or any kind of help.
Also does the galaxy have usb host? If i buy that adaptor, can i start accessing external harddrives and usb flash drives in file explorers?

It will take some time till the Galaxy 10.1 community grows! Consider that the retail tab (not the IO or 10.1V) is in stores for about one week for now!
When I think back on the XDA forums for the other devices I had it was always the same: it took about one or two months from the public launch till some sort of "critical mass" was achieved...
Personally I think that the 10.1 3G will be a success, so the only thing we have to do is to wait a little
Concerning USB-host:
Yes, USB-host capabilities are there! You can use devices like your mouse, keyboards, hard-drives (some need external power though)...

Wait, when was the galaxy tab released? I thought it came out early June?? If it has been only a week or two that would definitely make sense haha
Is the harddrive issue needing external power something that could possibly be addressed in the future with custom roms and updates? Or is that some hardware restriction? I had the Toshiba thrive (sent it back) and it seemed to read and write anything like a monster.

All versions released before last week are/were preliminary ones! Samsung planned to release the tab ~3months ago (the 10.1V version), but then decided to redesign it a bit (thinner, lighter) so that it would compete well with the ipad2!
The "real" launch of the overhauled tab in Europe was last week (and in some countries it's still not available, also due to a lawsuit with apple). In my country (Austria) the launch took place last week, although available quantities are still very low, the price still relatively high (~EUR600)!
Regarding the USB-host:
The specification says any USB port should provide 500mA, I'm not sure if this value is reached by the tab-port. If yes then it should be no problem! If no it depends on the drive if it functions or not!
Custom roms can change power settings some times, this depends how the hardware is configured (if it is "stong" enough without taking damage)! For example the charging power could be adjusted at some phones by cookers!

GT10.1 WIFI only was released in US at least a month ago. In Europe it has been released in some countires. In my country, the expected release date is end of September.
About development and ROM's. It seems that most active development is for Transformer and Iconia. It seems that GT10.1 is not far behind and it seems to have the most potential. Xoom was the first HC tablet, it was released about 6 months ago and it still has only two custom ROM's.
The biggest problem is that there is no HC source code. Maybe ICS will change that...

Agreed - in the UK it was definitely more than a week ago.

I'm from China.And GT-p7510 was released at 27th,Aug
And my P7510 is on the way,SF-express

Dang okay I guess I was mistaken, it wasn't released as early as I thought which answers the question. Sweet, I'm sure the community will get larger soon especially with source code or ICS coming out. I guess all the tablets development are somewhat stagnant for that reason. Thanks for the responses.

in fact it was released in june!!! but officially it was not available in some countries. i say officially because it's just like saying the samsung galaxy s2 wasnt available in the us until yesterday.

even some countries in europe started receiving it in june itself.

only the 10.1V and the 10.1 wifi versions were available that early, the 3G versions rolled out last week!! and as far as i can tell the 3G version will be the most popular one...

Regarding the op question: I think the Tab is rather complete and doesn't need many customizations. Think that will explain the difference with the other device communities. More satisfaction means less active development.

I've had my Tab since the end of June when it became available in the US (after the New York release in early June).
Since June, some weeks the community has a bunch of releases, then goes quiet with a few dev's releasing updates. Overall, after the last build release, the Tablet it great with TW (others will argue different) but its stable and fast. Only few mods need like the UA Agent fix.

just make sure you dont keep the tab in its box, remove all the plastic seals from the accesories. In short, make sure that the tab and its box looks like for personal use and old. they would not tak you for that.

What gives with the lack of updates???

So i was reading an article in regards to new tabs coming out this year (http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Rivals-to-the-iPad-Say-This-nytimes-3459496839.html?x=0) and there was a paragraph that read as follows:
"Devices can already run Android 2.3, known as Gingerbread, and Android 3.0, known as Honeycomb, is scheduled to be available this year. Andy Rubin, vice president for engineering at Google, showed a prototype of a Motorola tablet running the operating system at a conference in December."
Am i missing something? What tabs are running 2.3? My T-Mobile tab sure isn't and still no word on an update, and if 3.0 will be coming out soon what is the point of releasing or updating to 2.3?
Very aggravating.....
You bought a tab with 2.2 right? Then what are you crying for. Nobody said the tab would be getting anything else. So are you buying devices for what they are? Or are you buying them for what you want them to be, because electronics don't work like that.

Yes my tab is running 2.2, all i was trying to say is that since they are mentioning that there are tabs running 2.3 and the up coming 3.0 i just wanted to know when are were going to get those updates. Yes i am happy with the way the tab runs now but if there is something out there that other tabs already run, why not expect that to be on mine.

It just says there are devices running 2.3. It doesn't say Galaxy Tabs specifically!
FYI, there are no updates for 2.3 for any Tab at present - at least not in general distribution.

Thanks for pointing that out, i figured since the article was talking about tabs i assumed that's what it meant plus the fact that the very last line states: "Andy Rubin, vice president for engineering at Google, showed a prototype of a Motorola tablet running the operating system at a conference in December."

You just answered your own question there the clue was in prototype, and if you watch the video of him doing the demo hes very careful about how and what he shows so that he does'nt encounter any problems, both the os and the tablet are prototypes and as such are'nt ready for distribution yet.
Hi,
unfortunately, HoneyComb won't be available for Tab. Samsung will only update to 2.3. Officially, HoneyComb needs dual-core processors and bigger screen size and perhaps that's the reason it won't be updated on the Tab
i don't agree with the fact that we buy electronics purely for what they are.. the potential of what it can be should be taken into consideration. The Tab is a great machine but still not exactly a tablet due to the OS. Its unfortunate that i will never be (again due to OS). i do own a Tab and it has served me well but i was kinda hoping for improvement (as all gadgets owners would).
When I buy a blender or a TV I don't expect anything other than what I get in the box. When I build a PC I don't expect the graphics card to get the new DX or OGL hrdware implamented with a firmware upgrade when the company releases info on new cards. When I buy an OS I read the features and only expect fixes, not another OS in a few months.
Why do people assume because it's a Tablet it has to morph into other things every few months? Samsung didn't shut down their Tablet R&D when they released the SGT. No, they took what worked and continued to add to it. OF course they are going to stop putting new s#!t on there old hardware and push their new hardware with it as feature. Why? Becasue Average Joe doesn't understand the hardware difference but tell them it's got a whole "new" OS and throw in a catch phrase like "multi core" and "Multi Task" and *Bam!* sales.
It's not a new way of doing business. It's just a new platform to do it on.
Incorrect the product testing guy at Google already said there's no such requirements for3. 0

Yep. My bad.
Anyway, apparently the minimum hardware requirement is wrongly reported. The Gtab can run honeycomb but sadly Samsung will not support it.
No matter, I'm sure we'll be able to download and update via this forum ;-)

You can buy electronics for any reason you'd like but if don't buy it for what it is, you WILL be disappointed at some point. That is an absolutely certainty. How about that iPad? Think there's any technical reason it couldn't run a Flash player? All those people who bought an iPad expecting Jobs to eventually relent and allow Flash are pretty disappointed right about now because there's absolutely no technical reason it couldn't work and yet it doesn't and, most likely, never will. Samsung doesn't need to ever do anything with the Tab again and I would be happy with what it does because it meets my needs. That's why I bought it. I kind of doubt that "needs dual-core..." stuff, too. Every company annouces that nonsense and then we find out six months later that the latest and greatest runs just fine on year old hardware when you hack around the arbitrary checks that stop it from running.

Will 2.3.36 be the last fw upgrade we'll see from Archos?

What do you think?

Archos update support is great
They even released a Update for the Gen7 (Archos 5 Internet Tablet) with Android Donut (1.6) in April '11
This device has released in spring 2009!
2 and a half years of updates Considering by this we'll get updates till summer 2013 (At least)
I gave up hope, sold my A101 and bought me an Acer Iconia A500.
There is only one thing which I am missing from the Archos and that's the supported videocodecs of the A101.
Now being changed to the Acer, I won't ever buy an Archos again. Not for it being a worse product, but because of not answering my supportquestions, only auto-reply's.
Good luck to you all !

The World need more optimists...
I have had no issues with archo support. They replied with in 2 days of my question( not auto reply). also the device works great as is. I just rooted and that was it. I don't run urk i just did some simple mods like move the buttons to notification and a custom boot animation. other than that my tab works fabulous. The only thing that archos needs to fix is the random reboot while sleeping thing but even that isn't enough to make me pay over $500 for a tablet.
And yes i think we will get more updates. I think that they (Archos) may be waiting for Ice cream sandwich to be released, since the honeycomb source code seems to be a highly guarded secret. but hey i am willing to wait and see, and then if after ICS gets released we don't get a update soon i may be swayed to buy something else.
Quite frankly I'm almost at the point of ditching my A101. I love it dearly, however these last few weeks the touch screen has turned to being the most awkward thing I have ever used, it won't respond to anything for a few minutes, then be great after that. This could be a software issue, but either way it's something that didn't used to happen and quite frankly just shouldn't happen.
Also, honeycomb tablets are *&%^ing all over the Archos. If the 7-inch Acer iconia turns out to be good, I'm on it as soon as I can be.
Hope not but who knows

Most of those initial releases were unofficial internal ones full of bugs. Took ages to get a stable 2.2 rom. Head over to the 19000 forum and see all the *****ing about slow samsung updates.
Kies only updates when your local phone carrier adopts a new rom, so I didnt use it much.
Look I got the phone last July and the software was fairly horrific. Huge lags due to the rfs filesystem and software. Took about 6 months before official roms were decent. Up until then, to have a good experience you needed to root/lagfix/use custom rom.
Cyanogenmod 7 final version is either available for the I9000 for "some times" already.

That is just rubbish. Standard return instructions for a bricked phone are pretend you were upgrading the firmware with Kies and you dont know what happened. Never came across a case where they replaced a bricked phone where they were told it was bricked.
Oh and in the SGS II they have a kernel flashing counter where the phone records when you flach a new kernel. Nice little warning triangle left on the phone when you do so. Apparently you can reset the counter, but this trigers another counter reset.
You are not being realistic about warranty cover.
I own about 10 Netbooks/laptops/tablet PC and even a Desktop for productivity, so I just wanted to use my Tab for fun : browsing, emailing, media and eBooks Reading. Unfortunatly I can't use my Archos for this purpose as it is useless except to hold my paper books or as a luxuary coaster...

Mr. Clown? I know we're keeping you busy lately mate, but can you clean this thread up a bit? Waaay off topic.

will we get ics on our xoom at the hong kong unveiling?

I reaaly hope we will be first again for honeycomb updates.
We will get it. How fast depends on model. The wifi will be the first to have it most likely with the 4g version getting 4 to 6 weeks later after Verizon gives it the OK. How long the delay between announcement and push is up to Motorola and how long they have been working with it. If past performance is any indicator then at least two other tablets will have it before we do.
I dont think so.maybe next year because ICS is the selling point of every new phone out there so they got to give them the novelty of ICS. Also i dont think they will release the code to devs (or what every they need to make chinese tablet) because of that. Imagine that you sell a $499 tablet vs a $99 tablet that has the same hardware...thats what they did with honeycomb. So my money is maybe on december after the samsung galaxy 3 gets old. Also, i think the tablets right now are really defragmented (dont know the word im looking for) so ICS have to pass from google to Motorola ( and we all know motorola) after ICS i guess we all going to get the same updates.sorry for the english
anyone know how how long after the unveil the wifi version should get the update?

The source code WILL be made available. Rubin said so in the past, when pointed out that HC sources were MIA, and he explained the reason for it, saying at the same time that Android sources will be again public once they reunify the 2.x and 3.x platforms into a cleaner, multi-devices software base.
Keep in mind that it's not just the OS based on the open source code that makes the tablet. Look at all those cheap Android 2.1/2.2 tablets - one of the things they often lack is access to the Android Market (in addition to using resistive screens, low performance SoCs, etc...). I suspect that you have to pay a license to Google to be allowed to bundle Google apps such as the official Android Market (someone might confirm this for me). This is where a major player like Samsung or Asus will distinguish itself from your average inexpensive Chinese-made tablet.
So, no reason at all for Google to refuse to distribute the code. Don't forget that the fact it's open-sourced is one of the main reasons behind its popularity.
So in the end, I'm fairly confident the Xoom will get ICS. If not from Morotola, then through unofficial builds from the public repository, like Cyanogen does for phones under 2.x.

Same day brah
Motorola Xoom to be first Ice Cream Sandwich tablet? http://goo.gl/611fi Shared with APPY Geek (http://www.appy-geek.com
hopefully this rumor is true
Since the Xoom is the reference tablet...a pure Google experience device, the chances of it getting ICS sooner than later are high. Which tablets got 3.1 first? Which received 3.2 first? There's your answer.
Haven't sent my "4G" Xoom to MOTO/Verizon because I use it as WiFi only, will I have to send it in to continue on the upgrade path?

You might as well send it to get the upgrade. The resale value will be higher.

The Xoom isn't an official reference device, and it isn't a refdev for ICS. My guess is that ICS update will come from your friendly custom ROM sooner than from Moto-Goog, as else the new FamilyEd Xoom will need to be updated as well, which probably won't happen any time soon given its new low-end status. Prioritizing and differentiation will mean the focus of development will be on the Xoom2 toys. That's how it has always worked.
The good news is that with ICS hitting AOS, custom ROMs will get better, sooner. In tandem with the above, there'll be more reasons for you to go offroad with ICS, if you haven't already.
>You might as well send it to get the upgrade. The resale value will be higher.
If reports are true, LTE mod will eat up more juice and reduce operating hours.
I hope Google take a leaf out of Apples book and say updates are being pushed out after this event.
Loved that about apple.

It has been this way for the US Xoom. Until now, Google has been the one who has pushed updates for US Xoom, so there is hope we will get ICS at some point, but i don't believe it's going to happen today. The reference SoC for ICS is TI OMAP, so it doesn't look good for our Tegra powered Xooms.
>I hope Google take a leaf out of Apples book and say updates are being pushed out after this event.
Apple isn't that different. Old toys don't get the new-fangled Siri thingie.
The 2nd-gen of Android tabs (mostly OMAP4) are only marginally better than the Teg2 hardware wise. ICS will be the big selling point. Differentiation means you don't let old toys have the same functions as the new, as that defeats the purpose of selling new toys.
Speaking of new toys, I like the MotoACTV. The first wearable (and likely hackable) Android device. It would be neat if one can shoehorn a full-fledged Android distro in there. Display is tiny, probably 320x240, but good enough for niche uses. Pricing is outrageous, but it'll drop soon enough.
no release date for ics....just for the nexus on november
they did release the SDK today tho !!!! gonna play with it now

actually the Source Code is already on AOSP's website for developers.
pardon my ignorance but sdk is good for making roms or just to make apps for it...or just to release hacks for other platforms like 3.2.2 ,etc. i just know its good lol but dont know what good it can be.
With the Galaxy Nexus not being released until sometime in November I think we may be waiting until December for an official release. Hope the devs can pull a rabbit out of a hat.
SDK could bring us a release but hardware acceleration is unlikely until we see the official release.

I don't think there was any doubt of this, but it's nice to have a rough guess of when we'll get it.
There will be custom roms in the meantime but I suspect we'll lose a lot of stylus support.

Yes, ICS has support for Pressure Sensitive screens.
I don't understand why everyone thinks the Note will get ICS.
Its just some blog that says so...
They even have edited their post now:
Update : is not official confirmation from Samsung Korea (the only one who can give the full official) but is "a hypothesis" for the next updates. Only Samsung Korea will confirm the roadmap of aggironamenti.
I say, the Note does not get an Official ICS...
Its far more logical that the Note II will get ICS.
NO confirmation, nowhere. Stop fooling yourself.

Why are you so negative about ICS? Secondly, note is a brand new device. Almost all devices from past 6 months must get an upgrade to ICS.

Its just not likely the Note will get ICS, and NOWHERE Samsung did say the Note will get ICS.

Wait for an official Samsung announcement, than talk about "its confirmed".
And why "Almost all devices from past 6 months must get an upgrade to ICS" ??
Wishful thinking maybe?
Because otherwise it's bad PR. Android devices which are at least six months old have always been updated.
Think about what Samsung needs to do if they put ICS on this Note.
They spend a lot of money on marketing the Note, and its just about to get released...
If they would put ICS on this Note, they either have to revise all the marketing material, or recreate the exact same software on ICS, including launcher etc.
Even the Italian blog mentions second quarter 2012 as a date for a possible Note update to ICS.
By that time the market is also ready for a Note II with ICS 4.5

If they don't update to ICS, Samsung will have a lot of negative media about not supporting there brand new flagship devices. Which will result in a lot more of a loss than the gain. Plus they have to update TW to ICS anyway, they might as well put a bit of more effort and make it work for Note. And ICS can act as an incentive for newer purchases, people always like forward to buy newest Android OS. Galaxy S2 came out and still they are providing updates for Galaxy, why do you think that happens?

We will see.
But there is no official announcement or confirmation from Samsung that they will update the Note to ICS. Its just a blog, and they already had an "update" in their post, they are not so sure anymore.
So the title of this post is wrong.

As I said in another thread, it would be a PR disaster for Samsung to come out with a phone at the same time they issue ICS and not provide an upgrade path.. At thIs point I think you're speculating yourself, and you need to sit and wait like the rest of us and see what happens. My bet is you are very wrong.

I hope I am wrong.
But you agree there is no confirmation to be found, right ?
(And the rest is speculating)
Google requires all manufacturers to deliver updates for at least 6 months for all new devices.
So ICS should come to the Note.

Yes. In this case Gingerbread updates. 2.3.x updates.
i am pretty sure given the way samsung has been working these days.
However i dont have any confirmation.
actually, Google said 18 months. I am quite certain that ICS will land on any Galaxy S2 and after device. PR disaster. I mean look at the other KOrean maker, LG, they are not exactly doing great.

You clearly dont know what the hell you are talking about here!
Google wants that all manufactures update to ICS because of fragmentation. Google will update once a year like Apple!
The Note II maybe not coming at all if this thing does not sell. So they will update this Note to ICS. Every new phone you buy from Sammy will get 18 months of Support So that means ICS will come to the Note!
Mark my words ! Of Course they will not confirm this this quick because of the galaxy Nexus. It will interfear the sales of that phone!

Great work by sammy actually!! its just a matter of time before we get the leaks....
I am looking forward to this like the rest of us. However we need to take into account that delays (ATT i897 Gingerbread) aren't necessarily Samsungs fault. Quite often it is the carrier that causes the delays. So for those that are on ATT for example may have to wait longer then the rest of the world. Hopefully this is not the case.
Actual news came from. ...

This could still be 3 months away though, that's ages!!
Yup, Q1 is January to March. Who knows we might get it on the 31st of March
At least samsung is quicker than lg, it took them a whole year to update the optimius 2x from froyo to gingerbread. Really looking forward to ICS, hopefully it will land late January early February. I'm sure we'll have CM9 sometime in January.

+1. I was shocked when I read about the Gingerbread update for the O2X being released recently. I assumed all along it had Gingerbread. Shame on you, LG!
Speaking as someone who had to wait well over a year before my last phone *finally* got freaking Froyo (and was told it was never getting Gingerbread) this is a welcome and ambitious announcement. Here's to hoping Docomo can get on the same page as quickly as Samsung.
Looking forward to this - but I am still a noob enjoying all the custom roms the devs have to offer.

Yeah, that's ages, but be honest... do you REALLY need this update? I bet your phone works perfectly and you still would be absolutely happy even if ICS didn't exist yet.
Seeing as we're already getting leaks, I would be surprised if the official ROM for international users would take that long to come out.

Why do you think that? The current status rather clearly points to a february/march release.
Current leaks are unstable, so probably a month more development for decent stability, then comes a period of wider testing (all different carriers and Samsung sales companies in different countries), probably some certifications made in parallell as well. Now we're in end of january or later...
Then some bug fixes once again after these tests. And some additional tests of course after these fixes.
I cannot see any possibility for an official release before mid-february, probably a bit later in March.
But of course, the leaks in january used for wider tests might be pretty good for all-day use, so if you don't require official releases you don't have to wait that long.
What a clever way of "stealing" us 3 months...

Because its not like the devs on here that do these things on their free time - the developers at Samsung working on the port are paid to do so, its their job, and they have to work on it several hours a day, every day.
But I might be an optimist. In any case, I'm sure a good enough leak will come along sooner than expected that is beneficial to the devs.

Agree - my SGSII is rooted so I got rid of all bloat-ware.
It's fast and battery is good
They say Q1 now, but if we look back at the updates they have done before they relese a update, that breaks something, then pull it again work on it for a month or 3 before releasing it again...
But that have ofc more been a kies problem then a update problem. Can remember when i had the Galaxy S and that got the GB update, that left the users in download mode, when updating over kies...

Does this mean that the leaks are non-indicative of the actual update, and we will indeed get ICS launcher/TW5?
