It seems like the custom ROMs out right now are for the international version, right?
There should be ROMs coming for US-specific (IE, Vibrant), correct? I just don't want to get something I cannot customize. What scares me is that Samsung will update it to 2.2 and not release 3.0 later on?
Coming from the Touch Pro 2 scene where there are lots of variations as well, there should be roms that are compatible with multiple handsets and even some geared towards specific phones. Additional add-ons might be required for button layouts or something but I'm not sure how it works since I am speaking with experience only in the Windows Mobile area.
Regarding the update, it's really hard to tell since we don't even have the 2.2 update yet. But hopefully, they'll continue to support the Galaxy S as it's Samsung's direct iPhone competitor.
We should be able to flash any firmware for the galaxy s including the modaco rom. The real question is will we be able to get a hacked recovery to stick like amon_ra or cynogen ? Ps my phone comes this week im freaking excited!!

I'm excited to and I'm exited to be apart of building the vibrant section hopefully can atleast beat out the captivate and fascinate page
Thursday morning I'm waking up early and picking this baby up. I hope we can gain root the same way as the international version.

same going to be at the store 9 am to pick it up then head straight to xda for a root and a cfw that would be a dream
Hopefully the source code that was released by Samsung for the Galaxy S is the same for the Vibrant, which I see no reason why it would change but it is Samsung. If it is, I will help to port CM6 over to the Vibrant. The source code from Samsung that I downloaded yesterday has from what I could see with my quick glance over the drivers (baseband, sound, screen, etc) that would be needed to bake up a custom ROM.
That would be so awesome. I really don't care about samsung supporting this phone, as long as they let devs do their thing. Meaning not to lock up anything ala droid x

It doesn't matter if they don't officially update it to 3.0, when there is root, there is a way!

not nessecarily true lol, take a look at the Motorola Milestone for an example, they have had root for a long time now, but cant load a custom rom due to an encrypted bootloader.
That's why I'm saying that if samsung doesn't do it, let the community have what it needs to do it themselves, look at cyan. My g1 should've been obsolete a year ago, but on the contrary its as strong as it was when I first rooted it.

If the drivers are there, 90% of the work is done. We'll have the latest roms (barring some unlikely extreme performance requirements).

Haven't checked in a while but the Behold 2 was a pain in the ass to root. And Samsung said that they didn't want people hacking their phones. That was a few months ago, since I don't have the phone I haven't checked back. I'm getting this bad boy and hopefully there will be a lot of support for it.

Second that. Took me 1 minute. Maybe less, LOL. Running tests, everything seems to be working, SU permisions et al.
Not sure on boot, but it seems that Samsung didn't even try to make it hard.
I went back to winmo for a while, and while the HD2 community is great, have to say glad to be back on android.

The behold 2 wasn't too bad to root me and kam187 had it rooted shortly after it launched. The custom roms part was the hard part lol.

The fact that modaco has a custom ROM out indicates that it's probably going to be fairly easy for us.
I have a cracked screen and need to get a new phone. Can you still put custom ROMs on the Evo or is that hole closed now?

"I want to unroot my phone, what is the best way to do this? If you want to root using a different method, or need to return your phone to where you got it from for any reason, read on.
Answer: You need to download a RUU and install it. You can download an older RUU or get a newer one. This will unroot your phone and make it look like you never rooted it in the first place. You can even do a RUU if your screen is busted, just always keep USB debugging on. To use it, follow the instructions in the RUU executable and do what it says. "

Thanks. I probably should have worded it better. I am running a rooted 1st gen Evo right now and was worried about whether or not the new model (004?) could be rooted by any known method yet.
P.S. Sorry for the typo in the topic line. Didn't catch it with the cracked glass until after I posted.

I love my phone but it's frustrating seeing other galaxy devices getting updates left and right while we get left in the dark
I posted a comment on samsung forum saying that this phone is great but it's already outdated when it hit the stores and they denied my comment
Honestly I'm losing hope due to the fact my girlfriend had a Droid Incredible with 2.2 even my old G1 has 2.2 it may be to much for it to handle it but it still has 2.2
Btw. If it wasn't for you developers I would have left a long time ago Thank You Guys
Sent from my Rooted space time Continuum w/ 2600mAh battery
It will get 2.2 eventually, but only time will tell how long. If we can get kernel source for the I500 phones, we should be able to get you a working kernel, and you may be able to use one of the Fascinate Froyo ROMs then. The biggest problem you'll have is getting the kernel until Samsung releases the OTA or source because of the different video driver used for the screen/ticker/soft keys.

I'm with you on this update lincoln3823. Very frustrating hearing other phones have froyo while a phone released in November is unable to get an update.
I love my phone but I'm going crazy with my RSS not working at all and SNS not working correctly (facebook-yes; twitter-no).
I've even reset my phone and it worked for maybe a couple of days.
Why won't they push an update to froyo??

Well it was said that samsung was charging carriers to release ota firmware updates. I don't know how much it is true but I'm starting to believe the rumors.
Sent from my Rooted space time Continuum w/ 2600mAh battery
If that's true, that really stinks.
Sure wish I new someone who knows the answer to this question.
Heck, I might even pay for it, if the cost (ROI) was worth it. Sure would like to see flash on my phone. Besides froyo has 57% of the market vs. eclair at 31%.
That's crazy considering the Continuum came out in November.
On another note:
I haven't rooted my phone and I noticed your signature as Rooted.
Question? Is it worth rooting? I've read Pros on it but haven't seen any Cons. What's the drawback on it? Updates? Can you revert back to stock if I choose too.

I hear you dfgged.
So like I've been looking around at forums to root my phone but I have no idea what I'm doing. Really none. Just got my continuum in Jan. I read about OneClick and SuperOneClick (think that's right) and sometimes it works and sometime not.
Can you point me to the "Root for Dummies" section?
Also, what software do I need to backup my phone incase of trouble so I can revert back to stock?

BTW, I rooted my phone using SuperOneClick. It worked perfectly and I've verified it using Root Checker. Now my next step is I want to remove or freeze the bloatware.
I'll direct future non Subject (Are we ever going to get 2.2) related questions to appropriate Threads posting.
I really didn't have an idea about rooting either....seems like I was looking everywhere for rooting information. I tried z4 multiple times with no effect. superoneclick worked. I am running a windows 7 laptop. The phone drivers updated (downloaded from the net) when I plugged in my phone. Then I followed the video instructions on superoneclick site and everything worked fine. continuum w/ verizon. Now I just need to figure out how update to 2.2 I"m on the way!

There is no leaks available yet so the only way to get to 2.2 is to wait, or hope that Adrynalyne can get a leak.
But both imnuts and Adrynalyne are both working on custom roms so there will be some love for the continuum

It's now March 29, still no 2.2. Any info?

samsung submitted ec17 for the fascinate to verizon...and apparently that is still in testing...im just gonna assume it ll fail testing like most of their updates and never come out
the fascinate root crowd no longer really cares though as the mesmerize 2.2 officially came out w/ source....
but it seems like continuum updates follow quickly behind fascinate updates...so if hypothetically a fascinate ota occured like this week then it would probably be soon after for the i400
Ok, I was just fine tweaking 2.1 for now until something happened and we finaly got 2.2+, since Eclair isn't really that bad. Now I am starting to see 2.2+ only apps (ones that I want to try mostly) and it's starting to make me less patient. It saddens me since this phone had so much potential with the decent hardware and interesting ticker feature, but it is quickly being left in the dust as the little android that couldn't... /sadpanda
Looks like Samsung has released the Froyo source code for the Fascinate... that could be a good sign... Of course, isn't there a Fascinate on Rogers (Canada) that has had Froyo for awhile?
I know I saw it on android central and I got excited but then again we did get left behind once before

I accidentally updated to the 2.3 update from sprint, which naturally killed root and battery life of my shift, and so now I'm wondering if there is a way to ruu back to 2.2 so I can root and save some juice, or am I just S.O.L. until devs figure something else out?
This has been answered in several different threads... As of right now there is no way to return to 2.2. Until another root method is found, your pretty much stuck with what you have.

I'm in the same boat. If there isn't a solution found within a week or so, I'm going to reactivate my Palm Pre and use it until the fix is found. I NEED to have wifi tethering and the Pre was really easy to get it working on. FML

Right now, there is NO new root. I guaranty you there will be people Fighting to be the first to post when it actually drops. Plus, if you read the thread, they state that it seems to be very device specific...meaning it may not help us, we don't know yet. Unless you are a dev or a tester, we are still in wait-and-see mode.
True but I suspect the same root will work on this device as well. Just surprised to see so little chatter about it

Why get the hopes up of all of the noobs that took the OTA. The smart ones that got unlucky with a warranty swap or an insurance claim that got 2.3.3 on a new/refurb phone knows where to look and when to ask about it.
I heard unrevoked has a solution. They appear to have bootloader loop issue to resolve before they can publish a solution.
Hope this is true.
