How to get one outside the US - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Im trying to get a nook but cant seem to find anywhere that sell them in the UK for a good price. Barnes and Noble dont ship outside US. Any ideas guys?

ebay maybe

They are charging a lot for postage. And I dont know how the warranty would work if it broke. I would rather buy from an online retailer instead of ebay.

Have a friend/relative bring one when they visit. Or order it shipped to them and get them to resend it on to you.

Not a bad idea sturmavik. How did other members in other countries get it, or is everyone here from the US? Would the registration be a problem if I asked them to bring me one on their visit?

You can use a shipping forwarder, like comgateway -
http://www.comgateway.com/RED/com.comgateway.cgw.Home.do?4403cgtyxsd=zvBXYl8DYtnyNeZZY8cVt3JiNL4=
edit -
Registration is fine - just use a US address for this and some form of vpn with US ip (hotspot shield) and purchasing books is also possible

Just got one few days ago when my sister was in USA. You can register through their site from your pc in advance and then give user name and password to person who will buy it for you so he/she can register it on the spot. When i registered on their site i used fake USA address and my visa card from my country. You can't buy books from your country on nook, only on using vpn service like hotspotshield on your pc and then add it to your nook. Also i dint know but really price is around 280 dollars since there is taxes involved. If you have any more questions fell free to ask.

my girlfriend bring one back when she visit new york

I am located at Greece and I got it from Ebay US seller with no more than 30-40 dollars for shipping.

Im in Australia and used hopshopgo as a freight forwarder . I purchased from Barnes and noble and had it sent to an USA address provided by hopshopgo . They then forwarded it to Australia for me .Ocasionally they have promos which I used and it brought the postage down from around $30 to $17 .
Hopshopgo like many freight forwarders out there often give you 2 options, one is you buy directly with the merchant using paypal or credit card . You then give the freighter the invoice details and when they recieve it they ship it out to you . Some merchants wont let you purchase it so the freighter will buy it for you . Somewhere around 7% last time I looked at the purchase price .
It is a couple of months since I used them but I think it was $24 for the first pound weight and then $4 for every pound after that .
I had no problems registering the color nook with barnes and noble and have bought a couple of childrens books to use on the stock nook . I also have cm7 running off a sd card and love it

I had no problem registering my new Nook over here in Europe - lucky?

Some have what they call "1yr international protection warranty". Not sure what that means, but my NC broke recently so I shipped it back and got a replacement. I had to pay $90 for postage and handling of the replacement, which is silly considering that refurbished ones are going at $150, and shipment took over 1.5 months. Never again.

Prudence tells me that you are probably correct. Ebay is a bit of a hit-and-miss, albeit no one is selling fake NCs at the moment...

I recently got an official, sealed box, refurbished nook color from a reputable seller on ebay, I timed it well and managed to get it for £130 (+£33 duty) including postage from the US (the exchange rate isnt quite as good now). As I got it so cheap I am not so worried about the warranty, I didnt even bother using the stock firmware and put cm7 on it at the first boot. I had no intention of using it for any B&N purchases, I didnt think it would work outside of the US in that sense, but is there anything you cant get through the Kindle app or Google books anyway?
I cant recommend this tablet enough! You just cant get anything comparable for that price, even the cheap oem rubbish from China cant compete. The screen is just unbelievable. Keep looking!

I have one in Europe, purchased in the US ans brought it over. Only problem is some apps are limited by the market to US IP addresses. Anyone come up with a way to overcome this issue?

Yeah, root that bad boy then install CM9. You're not gonna return it on warranty anyway.

Universals on E bay

Why are there so many for sale - advertised new and going for about 70 euros.
Is there a problem with them.
Do they need to be unlocked.
I was going to buy one at that price as a spare/to try mods on.
Steve
I have one for sale if you are interested, it has been opened, but all items are still sealed and un used. £380 (Boxed & Mint condition) if you are interested, I live in Bedfordshire, the unit is unlocked and contract free.
Sound suspiciously 'Nigerian' no me.
If it's too good to be true & if it's on ebay.....
say no more, don't be a mug UNLESS YOU'RE 10,000% SURE!
Andy
PS
Put it this way, you won't get a BUST one for under 140 quid (and i'm NOT including the marked up postage costs). Without a box in good working condtion, £300. Boxed & Mint, >£400, so go figure at 70E.
I got mine Bust for £80 - dozy tosser mislisted it - ha my bargain. 1/2 hour later fixed the damn thing. Friggin mint condition t'boot.
BTW, I'll bet my bottom dorrar that the seller is Chinese....
And I'll place another bet, I bet the listing will won't last long....

A new universal for 70 euros... mmmm i'll have ten units please; unlocked or not...
It is probably a scammer selling these 'items' under someone elses account.
I got mine on Ebay for 420 pounds. I'm in australia and you'd be lucky to get it for 600 pounds here. works like a charm. of course AFTER i upgraded with the JasJar ROM and burnt O2's software
I bought one on eBay for GBP 414, but the seller reneged -- he said he could not get the phone from his supplier. I quoted him eBay policy on selling items that are not already in possession of the seller. He was apologetic, and said this is the first time it's happened (his feedback shows previous Universal sales which were successful). He has a 99.7% feedback rating, with 358 positives and 1 negative from long ago. He said he's going to refund me, but has to wait for a bank transfer to clear PayPal, since he already transfered the money out of PayPal. Sounds suspicious. But I have PayPal buyer protection (for what it's worth), and I used my credit card. I will give him time, and if he still doesn't refund, I'll go through the non-selling seller process.
So I bought from a different seller for GBP 431, and I am waiting for it.
So many of these Universal auctions say "opened only to inspect" or "opened only to test", that it sounds suspicious.
Also, many of them say "unwanted upgrade", as if they were mailed a free phone and just want to get rid of it. Does O2 mail free Universals as upgrades?
Don't buy Universals on eBay unless the seller has 99+% feedback > 100, and the auction is covered under the "Free PayPal Buyer Protection". Look at their feedbacks, and what they bought/sold earlier. Pay with PayPal, and use a credit card as the funding source.
'free' at £75/month, min term 18months.
So if you consider £1400 free, then yes, they're 'free'.
Anyway, rules of ebay are:
1) It's a sellers market
2) Don't be greedy or you'll get a deserved bite in the ass
3) Supply & demand rules the roost.
4) research research research
5) READ FEEDBACKS & APPLY A BIT OF NOUNCE!!!
Hunt around for mislisted items - takes time but jeeeez the bargains I've scooped! Hence:
6) You put the effort in, you get the rewards out.
Andy
I had a look at those 70Euro Universals.
Seller from overseas? Check
Selling price way too low? Check
Seller doesn't take paypal? Check
1 day auction? Check
Seller's username appears randomly generated? Check
New seller account with feedback of around 10? Check
Feedback comments all left in a very short time interval? Check
Feedback comments brief and unlike genuine feedback? Check
Feedback left by 10 feedback, randomly generated usernames? Check
Initial bid from 10 feedback, randomly generated username? Check
So it rates 10/10 on the scammometer! But what the hell - bid on it anyway!
ROFL!
Yep, came across one of these & was about to flag it as a scam & as I was looking, it got removed!!!

IMO neither of those are suspisious. It means i have a better chance of getting a working unit. And just because someone got a free upgrade and does not state it does not make the listing any more legit.
I sold a spare XDA Exec on ebay which i acttually got as a cheap upgrade but not free. My wife prefers her existing phone. I knew it had a good chance of going out of the UK so for me to not check it would be madness. I wanted to list it as Sim Free i could not do that without physically checking. Plus i could not list it as working if i did not know that fior sure.

Yes this does happen a lot. O2 want to keep your business so at the end of your contract you are eligble for an upgrade to tie you up again for 12 or 18 months. They look at your history and if you have spent a lot of money with them on calls you get lots of offers. The more you have spent the better the offers. A lot of people are happy with there existing phone but know they could make a lot of money selling the new one.

Yes this is another bad problem with ebay. You have the option to remove bidders and to cancel the auction early to the highest bidder. You can only do this up until 12hrs before the auction ends. When i sold mine i waited to just before the 12hrs deadline and accepted the highest bidder i considered genuine based on their location and feedback that had an agreeable price for me. I was not out to make as much as i could get but just a fair price.
This worked well for me.

Hi,
I got my Vodafone V1640 for 330 GBP on eBay.
The seller accepted PayPal but anyway I spent a few days worried about not getting the phone.
It took 4-5 days till I received it.
Unfortunately it is locked to Vodafone UK and I want to use it with Vodafone Portugal.
No luck till now for the unlock code...
Cheers
I have over 900 + feedback on ebay and I always buy from those who have Buyer protection if its over £100. Bought my exec back in dec/jan this year from a guy who had 2 for sale for £385. The first had a screen calibration problem as if it'd been dropped. Sent him an email and he promptly sent me his other one just as soon as I sent him the first back. Since then absolutely no problems.
Also I always mention when selling that any1 with less than 5 + feedback will have their bids removed. I make sure I'm logged in for the last minutes of the auction in case I get sum1 with less then 5 feedback messing around. And I sure have had to cancel a few bids in the last few minutes. HTH
Consider this
£378 will buy a XDA Exec direct from O2's site brand new.
This is £150 for the XDA & 12 * monthly cost of £19
(which includes 50 anytime mins per month.)
Puts some of the £400-£500 Buy it Now deals in perspective.
Well in the UK at least.

Does anyone know where I can buy a Touch HD?

I ordered one from www.expansys-usa.com last Tuesday. They told me that it would arrive the next day. Then they told me that it would ship out on Friday, then Monday (today), then Tuesday (tomorrow). Now they're telling me that they wont get any more in until the first week of December. What's going on? I just want to buy a phone. Any place overseas have them IN STOCK that they want to ship to me?
Try clove technology
and search here for them too. I think people are satisfied with their service!
Ofiaich
ebay. there's 2 people there that have them in the u.s.
You can try ebay.com.au. They do delivery to worldwide, but the warranty is only in Australia.
eBay has a couple sellers with them "In Stock". Mine has yet to ship from one of these sellers. I suggest using Microsoft Live! cashback if you purchase through eBay. Last time I checked 25% back was still available for Buy It Now PayPal purchases (US Only).
there are over 100 units from various sellers on Ebay USA, some claims to be in stock.

try clove technology; that's who i purchased mine from and so did several others on the forum. whoever you go with, remember that the phone WILL HAVE to clear US Customs so make sure the seller has completed all the paper work! the most important item to include on the customs paperwork is the FCC ID!

I second this. I bought it from Clove Technology in UK. They shipped my device overnight as promised. It got delayed at US customs due to some paper work. But when I communicated to Clove about this, they filled it out and sent me a scanned copy via eMail and I sent the same to FedEx by Fax and it got cleared and got it delivered the next day.
Unfortunately, I got a defective device. My phone was not recognizing the SIM card. I tried everything, and its just the hardware problem. I contacted Clove... they asked me to ship it back. As soon as they received it, they shipped the replacement the same day. I got mine this morning.
I am sure they have enough units with them, since they sent my replacement device right away.
- Clove you owe me a discount on my next purchase...

Absolutely, if the seller is networkingrus! I've purchased two touch cruise's and and HD from him, and his act is really together!!! Or... you can check out his website. He's not as cheap as some of the other places, but his service is top-notch!
Everyone always says Clove, but no one ever give their website... so here it is... www.clove.co.uk. These guys are cheap, but I can't vouch for their service or integrity.
Happy trails!!!

I've used eBay for many gray market phones. Its a good choice. Some sellers are excellent. Just check feedback, read descriptions, and use PayPal.
Inkino
I used Inkino for my HD purchase. I found it on the "approved" list from the HTC site. Very good price and shipped really fast. I called them once to confirm an address and they were exceptionally nice and friendly. It was my first time using them. I recommend them.
I'll second networkingrus on ebay...I got mine through him and the service was top notch I emailed him over the weekend to verify his stock and he replied right back. It shipped that very next business day.

tips for buying off ebay?

any tips? anything specific to look for?
if new, then look for descriptions that say the phone is sealed in box, if its just new in box but not sealed then it could've been used and just repackaged to look like new
if used then always look for actual pictures of the phone in the posting, make sure you read what condition the phone is in (scratches or anything) and how long it was used for
the phone should run you anywhere from 350-450
PS: Bought 2 new sealed vibrants off of ebay one for 420 and other for 430

That is excellent advice to minimize buyer's risk, which is why phones in that state command a higher price than just "mint" phones in excellent condition. (Like a new car depreciates immediately when you drive it away from the dealer.)
Also, note that eBay has a Buyer Protection Program to help resolve disputes, and it is in eBay's own interest to guard the integrity of its marketplace. That does not mean they guarantee your satisfaction or even that the phone will function properly. But eBay will guarantee that the merchandise shipped meets the seller's advertised description, and "New, Sealed in Box" is an objective standard.
As a buyer I once bought such an advertised phone that did not fit that description as-delivered, and the seller was not cooperative in resolving the problem. So I had to escalate the issue to eBay, which found in my favor and saw to it that my money was refunded when I returned the merchandise. Actually, that's the closest I ever came to being burned on eBay. I think it is less risky than buying from a Craigslist seller.
I paid 350 for a 2 weeks old one (barely used) with the original box & accesories, all in perfect condition. What a sweet deal!
Check the seller's rep. I wouldn't but from anyone with fewer than 40 sales and a 98% pos rep.
Just my .02
Ebay is great, until you need to talk to them on the phone because of a shady seller!

I really don't want to scare you off ebay, however, with a purchase like this, I would do my ebay research very carefull.
You need to know the truth, the truth is, if you run into a problem, you will have tons of difficulty contacting ebay via phone.
I ask you to do 1 simple thing for me, just 1. Try to find an ebay phone number, search their site, search google, try to find a phone number to talk to a human being. Now, if you are able to find a phone number, call the number, see if you can get through to a human being. It took me almost 3 weeks to find a phone number, I litterly called about 20 numbers all of which were fake, old, no longer active, or put me through loops.
Finally, if you do have a problem, such as you paid for the product and didn't get the item, be ready for another saga that can last a very long time.
I've had a case open with ebay for nearly two months, supposedly ebay had decided in my favor, and I was due a full refund. Guess what, ebay never issued me a refund, the case still says open, 2 months now, no refund.
I would procede with caution, and only use paypal.
But, I beg of you, take my little challenge, try to find an Ebay phone number from their site, then if you eventually find one, see if you can get someone to pick up on the other end.
Good luck.
Always pay with PayPal. Any disputes with the seller, PayPal will back you up. They have a buyers protection program. Look it up on their website. By the way, you dont need a Credit Card to use PayPal, you can link it to your bank account if you prefer to pay cash.

I agree with the poster...to a point. Ive been anebayer for years.
Ebay number? I googled it:
http://contact.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ShowCUPortal&guest=1
Its on the ebay website. Called it too . Current and valid. Long wait time though
I never trust the disputing system on ebay. Slow, almost like they dont care.
However ebay golden rule:
unless you Really truly know/trust the seller....
always pay with a credit card (not visa debit) and using paypal.
Paypal are very quick to deal with fraud/issues and very favorable to the buyer usually (I know, I sell and buy a lot ! ).
Paypal are good if you use a credit card because they are afraid of chargebacks.
Buy from sellers you trust. A good thing to do is simply ask the seller before you buy! They are human too....and if they seem legit (good reason for selling, give you an accurate description of the phone), by all means buy!
I've bought and sold on ebay (internationally):
* logitech mice
* Logitech Keyboards
* Three laptops
* Diamond 1
* Diamond 2
* N82
* N95
* Nexus One
* HTC Desire
* Samsung Captivate
I've had issues but theyve all been resolved on paypal/ebay.

I've learned my lesson never to buy anything used that is expensive and mechanically or electronically complex. Good luck with whatever you choose to do!
I've had Good Luck with Craigslist
I've purchased 2 Vibrants and a HTC HD2 from Craigslist.
All three were in next to new conditions and I'm very happy with my purchases. I was able to inspect the phones BEFORE putting up my money. I also require the seller to sign a receipt and provide ID before making the purchase. Can't be too careful in todays world.
I paid $300 each for the Vibrants and $250 for the HD2.
verify that the phone is not stolen. Request the IMEI number from the seller and call T-mobile up to check if the device was ever reported as stolen. I think there is also a website where you can check the IMEI # for its validity....not sure how accurate that is though

The price is a bit steep for a used vibrant with no box. I'd watch it but keep looking around at the same time.

I usually assume new w/o box is stolen or just a used phone they're trying to pass off as new.

[July 7] [?] Can I use a phone thats been claimed for insurance?

Someone on ebay has an HD2 for sale for a good price that he claimed insurance on. I was thinking of buying it. Does anyone know if it'll work if I buy it?
Thnx for help =D

my mystic ball tells me that he claimed insurance on it for a reason....
i would ask for the imei # & then call htc to see if it has any warranty still on it. if it does you could buy it & hope that what ever is wrong with it will be covered under the warranty but you might be buying a very expensive paper weight. I bought mine on ebay & made sure it was still under warranty before buying it & then shipped it out to htc for repair. they replaced my phone & shipped it back 2 me 4 free. i only had to pay for the shipping there.
His description says he only did it to get another phone and that its gauranteed working. But I'm wondering if T-Mobile would care about that and block your phone?
my only concern would be it having a bad esn which shouldnt be likely since he said he did the swap himself. normally that happens when you try 2 sell a stolen phone. i would call t-mobile with the esn# to see if its bad or not.
anytime you do an exchange through t-mobile you have 2 mail back the phone thats not working or you will get a huge restocking fee = to the phones price unless it was an upgrade which i think you then can keep your old phone.
I would check the completed auctions on ebay, its on the left hand side of the page. price what the htc hd2 has sold for & then if you can get it for cheaper then the average price i would go ahead & buy it. if you cant get it working on t-mobiles network then you can always resell it on ebay & since you did your homework on how much you can expect 2 sell it 4 you wont be out any/a lot of money. i wouldnt think that it would be an issue but i also wouldnt want to give you info on something im not 100% on, best bet would be to call.
I didn't know ESN's applied to phones that use sim cards.
So if the ESN is bad then it might not work and it would just be a paper weight?
Would applying a new OS such as android fix this at all and is the ESN changeable?
Thanks for the info guys, esp htccraze
As I was writing that I was wondering it myself. Lol. I looked online at a few places and your right, t-mobile is not affected by bad esn #'s. I was with verizon till just last year so thats where I was gathering my info from, so I'm really sorry about that.
It seems as though everything should be fine then. Like I said, if you can get a good deal on it & think you'd be able to resell it around the price you paid then there wouldnt be as much risk because you'll be able to get your money back if for whatever reason you no longer like/want the phone. I don't like 2 tell ppl what they should do with they're hard earned money but as a pt seller on eBay myself I feel that papal/ebay buyer protection would have you covered if something was listed wrong or if it dont live up to the description he put in his listing.

cakinlife there are 2 options you can do. 1) As htccraze said yes you might want to call htc if it is still cover under warranty. 2) The HTC HD2 could be use under another network if the phone is unlcoked.
I would be suprised if there was no sting in the tail here
Insurance is not used just to get a new phone (most insurance phones are refurbs anyway) and the only reason it would be replaced without being sent in for repair/exchange would be if its reported lost/stolen, then the owner got it back (or it was not lost anyway)
Dodgy to say the least
If the IMEI is blacklisted, you need to provide proof of ownersip to unlock it (if you are not the original owner) in the UK that is
IMEI for the phone
IMSI for the SIM
Thanks everyone for the tips, I ended up losing the auction lol (price got too high) but now I know =D
Really appreciate all the help

If you are buying a Note 10.1, save yourself some money

Since the 10.1 2014 launched I knew I was going to buy one, I wanted to find a good deal on it though. I got my Black 32GB for $480 shipped! $120 off retail ain't bad.... :good:
What I did:
Go to Amazon and select the Black 32GB, there will be Used ones listed below. Amazon Warehouse is selling "Open Box" ones for $533 in "Good" condition. I looked for one that had the description that said: "Packaging may be damaged" as the only disclaimer. Then during checkout, apply for the Amazon Rewards card and they will give you a $50 gift card instantly that you can apply to the order. You don't even have to use the Amazon card, you just have to apply for it. Free money! I had it shipped with Free 2 day Prime shipping and when it arrived it looked like it never was used. The box had a couple rips on it, thats it. The tablet is in perfect condition.
For my money, I think you can't go wrong.
Thought I would share the love
If I'm goon NH to open a credit card is rather open one that hat gives me a XXX amount of money as a sign up bonus.
Just saying that's another option.

But I always think the ones that were sent back had some problem(right?!)
when the are sent back, does Amazon look into them and like restart and fix the item?! or they just put it in a box and send it to us? is it what's called refurbished?!
anyway another option for me is to wait for black friday...this tablet is a must have for me...so will get it one way or another

Great find!
But a word of caution to anyone going the eBay route, Samsung will not honor their warranty unless you purchase the device from an authorized dealer.
If you're planning on tripping the KNOX counter with root though, you won't have to care.

Not necessarily at all. It's like people that buy stuff at Best Buy. They just decide they don't want it and send it back. I have used mine a ton since I got it and it works perfect. So I don't know how it could be a bad one. It's not refurbished, that would have to be done by the manufacturer. This would be constituted as "open box".

This is a good point and opens up a new discussion. My theory: I think that people are being very dishonest and buying these tablets to simply get the free perks and then are returning them. I mean heck, you get $75 in free movies/music/apps! Mine when I got it still had all the Perks papers in the box. However, when I went to register on the site it said it was already registered. I opened a ticket with Samsung chat today and the rep said that in 2 days I should get an email from an elevated team that will give me the perks. I was very vague in my dialog. I simply said I bought it from Amazon and it would let me register the device on Samsung.com but would not let me register for the perks. He took all my info and left me waiting to hear from the other team. But I have a copy of the chat transcript that says I will get my perks in 2 days. I think they will have to honor that... In any case, I really don't care that much if I don't get them. Honestly all I wanted was this awesome tablet. And for the price I got it, it's a steal. If I get Perks too, then yay for me!
So you could def get lucky and buy one that the person didn't steal the Perks out of... A gamble I guess.

Make sure you check your gmail under the promotions tab. I thought some kind of funny business was going on with my tablet since I also got the "already registered" message when trying to claim my perks, but it turns out their page for it can be hit or miss (found lots of complaints online). Meanwhile the perks were sitting in my promo folder all along...

YOU MAY BE OVER LOOKING SOMETHING
Below is a copy of the Standard Limited Warranty and according to the warranty by purchasing it used you don't have a warranty.
So if it was registered........... There goes your savings as you now need to purchase a warranty.
I would buy an extended warranty with damage protection anyway because micro USB ports are known to be fragile and I would want to experiment with root. Still a savings though.
What is covered and for how long?
SAMSUNG ELECTRONICS AMERICA, INC. (“SAMSUNG”)
warrants that SAMSUNG’s devices and accessories
(“Products”) are free from defects in material and
workmanship under normal use and service for the period
commencing upon the date of purchase by the first
consumer purchaser and continuing for the following
specified period of time after that date:

is there even a way for Samsung to know where you purchased it? You can technically say it's a gift and they would have to cover you
499 tax free for 16 MB model at Military Exchanges...got mine today, good stuff, except can't play with it until tomorrow...on a road trip right now.
Just an update, I got an email from Samsung today and I got my perks! So I am not sure if the tablet truly was already registered for it or if the site was just having troubles but they sent me codes.

Be careful I bought one of these last week and it didn't have an s pen. A bit ticked off but amazon gave me credit to buy an s pen at my local store. There's 2 very minor scratch on the bottom but not very noticeable unless you really look. Also some light bleed. Otherwise the tablet is fine. Considering it has some scratch I would assume it was a returned used unit. Still not a bad deal but I'm a bit concerned. I was able to register the device so I'm good with warranty coverage I assume.

Yeah I hear ya, that's why I looked for one that only had the description that said the packaging was damaged. They were right on, my tablet is perfect. Minimal light bleed and not a scratch on it. I think that all units are going to have a little light bleed, its just the nature of the beast. The missing s-pen is a fluke I'm sure.
I am assuming the same things about warranty, they would never know if I bought this used if I am the first one to register it... So warranty should be fine
