HTC Desire browser vs. stock Android speed

Has anyone who has tried the Desire browser noticed that the loading speeds are much much much quicker than the stock Android?
I used KingK's Desire2Nexus for 1 day. Now I'm on CM 5.0.4 default. Loading up XDA on CM/default browser seems like there's a hang around the middle of the loading, and also 3/4 of the way there. On KingK, the loading speed was blazing going page to page. There was absolutely no hang at all.
Anyone else notice this?
Is it possible to use this browser without rooting?

Nope...it's tied into the HTC framework. For what it's worth, the stock browser has improved quite a bit from Android 1.5 even... the Hero browser was way nicer at that time. The difference now is negligible to be honest.

I had the exact opposite experience, lol.
I too noticed a big boost in speed with the Desire browsr.
Maybe some of you rooted peeps can post a comparison on Youtube. Just make sure to clear the cache before recording, lol... Don't need another Engadget-type video.
To me it seems faster, also has more features like the long press on any word and it will give u options for copy, translate, Wikipedia, and dictionary.
Can't say I have felt a noticeable difference in speed, though I enjoy the extra features of the HTC browser. Worth noting, though, that it doesn't let you open as many windows as the stock one.
No No No No Noooo LOL
The Desire browser sucks in my testing
Multi touch pinch and zoom is a big let down, it jumps around the screen and is just terrible
Also most pages i normally visit on a day to day basis just stop loading at the http part of the bar :|
Also in my experience is closed itself all the time, just like ended :|
But hey thats just in my experience lol
It doesn't "jump around the screen" as such. The text just gets readjusted to fit into your screen properly the way it does on the stock browser when you double-tap.
I've noticed that I'm less accurate in choosing links on the Desire browser. But it's an alpha, so not that surprising.
My biggest issue with the N1 in general is touchscreen accuracy; I really hope it's gradually fixed in software.
ive noticed it too! Actually ive noticed almost everything to be faster on the desire rom..(im using kings)..and the flash player is awsome..it works for everything but hulu for me..and the pinch zoom works perfect for me too..i remember their use to be a stutter compared to the iphone, but then i went to the apple store yesterday and compared my nexus running on desire rom with the 3gs and the nexus seemed much more fluid

Whos picking up a Slide today?

Im prolly picking one up on my lunch....Ive been stuck with my broken Cliq for too long.
How many others are picking up today?
I did! and i'm loving smoothness of the phone
Yea, Im really not worried about the latest and greatest, I just want a stable phone that does what it supposed to, and does it well. From what Ive heard from people that already have one, this phone pulls it off. That, an I have a pre-req of a physical keyboard, which made me not a big fan of the N1...should have mine in a couple hrs
I picked mine up already and Im impressed by the speed, but the touch screen is dare I say too responsive, when hitting the harware keys at the bottom of the touchscreen it somehow always does something on the touch screen not intended, and swype always picks up the wrong letter,I swear you barly hover your finger over this thing and it senses touch, kinda anoying, other then that my only complaints are that I set up my faves and after reseting the phone I had to do it again.I like the ui and the sense widgets but could do without the bubble icons and the bloatware,I mean for having 512 internal memory only 130 was available to me stock, and after puting about 7 apps on it's already down to 100,I mean christ my original mytouch is running 2.1 with 20 apps and I have 250 mb internal left without apps to sd.Hopefully some roots this and I can remove all the tmobile crap that you cant even use over wi-fi anyway.plus 2.2 is supposed to open twice the memory and add apps2sd support.the camera could be better, but all in all the phone is very fast and responsive so I wont complain too much, but will take some getting used to as I still love the original mytouch and it's lightweight design and the touch response seemed perfect.2 more complaints though is the slide out keyboard, not a smooth transition, feels kinda roughopening and makes a horrid noise, and the 4 row querty will take some getting used too,and the battery cover removal is assnine I can see it breaking easily.well thats all for now, will share more if I find anything intresting.
Picked mine up today. Not sure if I like the Faves app on the phone, but I'll play with it and see.
Only thing I'm noticing is that I get "The process com.htc.bg has stopped unexpectedly" message about every 10 minutes while messing with it.
Im still adding apps to it, so I'm not sure how it will react once it starts getting loaded with processes running.
the faves widget is fine but the app itself is kinda hokey, not terribly practical.
I've had mine since early April and still LOVE it
I would pick it up if there was some way for me get it at the 129 price.. I already have 2 tmobile lines, mine, and the wife's.. dont wanna pay any more a month than I am arleady paying, I dont see the need to IMHO.

My lord... your punctuation is terrible...
I am thinking of grabbing one this afternoon. I also have a pre-req of a physical keyboard, so being with T-Mobile has made me stick with my G1 for this long. My only gripe is the number keys do not have their own dedicated row like the G1, but I can probably get over that.
I also am just looking for a stable phone. With the G1's limited internal memory, I was left to rooting and hacking it up, and it's all getting on my nerves. I am ready for a solid working stock phone that also has a physical keyboard, and this looks to be the one to use. It even has a 3.5mm audio jack to boot!
Picked mine up today, as an early upgrade from my busted G1. SUCH a good call. It runs smoother than I ever expected, the browser blazes, and the only gripes I have are the weird bubble icons and the actual Faves app.
Also, much to my surprise, Flash is installed and working on the phone, though most of the video websites I use don't work. However, being able to see the full national geographic page load on a mobile device... well, let me tell you, it's refreshing. I can't wait 'til they release the Froyo update.
Might be a stupid question here, but does anyone know how to change the wallpaper for the lock screen? I feel like I've tried everything.

It's pretty simple, but you have to do it through myModes. Hit the menu button while you're on your home screen, then go into myModes. Select "Change your Mode" and while you're there, you have options to change your wallpaper and lock screen, as well as whatever else.
Good luck.
I was gunna pick it up today, but the lady on the phone told me if I hold out till the 26th i'll hit my 18 month period on my contract and it will drop $50 in price. Gunna wait till then, my G1 still works.
Thanks slobatch. I think that's about the one place on the entire phone that I hadnt remembered to look at until you mentioned it.
Just got mine. The Genius button works pretty well, but I've never used voice recog stuff ever since it's been around on phones, so not sure how much use it will get.
I do like it's speed. Just trying to get the feel for it currently, but so far I like it.
I've been about half and half on the voice recognition. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Really picky about some things
I use Dragon dictation for voice input, and for those of us to speak the Queen's English well, it works. Awesome!

The Voice so far has not failed, its seriosuly has to be the best voice controlled app ive used. Its been dead on in calling, and hicupps a tiny bit for text...which is all ive used it for thus far.
Gripes?
The sides the the keyboard are edged, they really should have been rounded (I can see myself taking a dremel to it lol), it gives it a minor uncomfortable feeling, but Im also comming form a Cliq (its leaps and bounds from that phone) so my hands are prolly still "formed" to it.
The phone as mentioned before...is a beast...and he potential it has once its been rooted is going to be fantastic. Now if we can just get a dev to pry their eyes from their noobN1s (thats right mikey, im lookin at you ) and take a look at it. The bloatware and stuff isnt much concern to me, because it will be taken care of once its rooted.
What would set me nice till then is a docking station, and a slim gel case..other wise..to me, its the best android phone w/ a keyboard tmo has to offer.
I picked one up this morning and I am glad I did. They nearly sold out before I showed up (20 minutes after the store opened). Right now I am in the process of reloading my music and CoPilot software while my fiance is napping. She is beyond tired of me testing this phone out today haha!
Mini-Review:
So far it has been very swift and almost too responsive. The phone part of it is very well done and the "linking" structure to hook up your social networks to contacts is very intuitive. Faves....meh. It has potential but I'm not seeing it yet. There isn't too much "bloatware" that concerns me on this phone that I have run in to. The keyboard is GREAT but I can see the concern in regards to the alphanumeric section of the keyboard being confusing. You get over that after a few emails though. My only gripe at the moment is that the market has been really slow and wonky but the same thing happened when I bumped up to 1.6 and 2.1 with CM5 on the G1. The market should be smooth in the next day or so. I'm sure the influx of everyone redownloading their paid apps is not helping. Ok, sorry for the randomness but I just thought I would throw some thoughts out.
i have to agree about the faves, bloatware and the 'odd' keyboard lettering....i also experienced the market being slow though i must say, the 3G has been 'blazing' in nyc...using the speedtest.net app i've consistently hit speeds well over 2 meg!!!!!

tmobile vibrant works great and no complaints

I must be the only one in this forum with a working t-mobile vibrant.
Works great and never had the gps issue either.
Keep up the good work T-mobile!
You're not the only one.
my compass was wonky though, but the JI2 Rom fixed it for me.
glad to hear your's works fine.
I am on my third Vibrant...
My first one was perfect: GPS worked, no lag issues etc. Unfortunately the menu key became nonresponsive...
Mine works great also
My Vibrant is just fine
My Vibrant is working just fine...
Maybe its because I haven't tried to mod it.
At $300, I don't want to "brick" it.
Enough said.
Working great here too.

Never have lag issues just GPS issues. Other than that this thing has been wonderful ....
The one that I have currently works great. I returned my first one because the home button quit working, gps also sucked on that one as well. I knew that there was a problem because my wifes vibrants gps works great.

It's nice to see a thread complimenting this wonderful phone instead of complaining. I also love my phone. Rooted, applied the GPS flashable .zip, and lag fix, but since then, everything's been flawless. Well, the battery life could be a little better, but I get through the day. And the fact that I can't sync with my Google Groups is kind of annoying, too. Haha. But it's cool to see my iPhone friends drool over the greatness that is my Vibrant.
Cheers.
A good amount of people with problems are the ones that hack up their phones. I don't install garbage roms on my phone and I don't have any "lag" "fixes" on my phone and it works great. I updated my phone to JI2 and performance is exactly where I want it to be. Battery life is excellent, EVEN BETTER - despite the fact that I have Tweetcaster, Google Talk, Tweetdeck, Google News&Weather, Fancy Widget AND Feeds & updates syncing every hour or 3. 13 hours of time unplugged right now @ 60% left. Slept for 10 of those hours, left it alone for 2 and I've been used it for maybe 1 hour. Now I'm going to really wake up..
LOVING my Vibrant.
The people complaining are people who expect more from the hardware. This phone is a monster when it comes to specs, but its not showing it software wise, yet.
Personally, coming a blackberry, I don't notice any lag lol.
How you got install JI2... to make the phone run smoother. If you don't mind.
Love mine too...even more after rooting and debloating

Using Ji2 also. I haven't bass much problem with my phone, except for lousy 3G, which got better with Ji2, but is ultimately a network problem in my area.
GPS and compass were wonky, but Ji2 fixed that. I have never had the supposed lag that everyone talks about. Did they expect a beowulf cluster of MIT supercomputers under the touchscreen?
As some others have said, those who have problems tend to also run extensively modded ROMS and overclocked kernels, etc.

And those having problem with the battery life tend to talk and text and email..., you know, they use it too much like a smartphone....
I switched to the Vibrant from the iPhone 3GS since the contract was finished and I couldn't be happier. This screen leaves the self-promoting "retina" screen in the dust. Black is black on this phone, period. Looking back at the iPhone, the colors now seem to be washed out. The Vibrant is really so vibrant and so light that I can put it in the shirt pocket and don't notice anything. However, after two weeks, I start seeing some worrisome symptoms. Occasionally, the phone becomes so sluggish that only a reboot will fix. I can't let the phone running constantly for many days without rebooting to get the responsiveness back. Even when a call comes in, the screen just not responds to touch until 10 sec later. The System Sound turns itself back so loud that when you reboot the phone, you have to keep the finger on the loudspeaker hole in the back to keep the sound down in the office and then set the System Sound down again for quiet shutdown. In side my house, the signal strength drops to around 0. Many time the phone just does not bother searching for signal any more. When I get into the car and drive out, the phone does not refresh searching for signal. I have to manually turn off and then on the flight mode for the phone to wake up, search for signal and lock it. This relock is very quick, but it's annoying that I have to remember to give the phone a kick to search after it looses the signal for a while.
All problems above are small problems, but they remind me the symptoms of Microsoft Windows before Windows 7 finally came. Any one has the annoying problems that I have? Note that I have Android 1.2 update 1 and I do not have any issue with GPS. Overall it's a much better phone than the iPhone, since I don't have the feeling of locking into ONE company for hardware and for software and I don't have to jailbreak it to get what I want. Thank you for all you guys writing great software for the Android platform. Samsung did a good job with this phone. Maybe Android 2.2 fixes all issues above. Can't wait.

How's your battery life?
I love the screen, too, but after two months with the phone I can't wait for 2.2 to hopefully fix some of the issues, and 3.0 to revamp the UI a bit - it's just not as smooth as the iPhone. And I hate the battery life compared to the iPhone.
But, the screen rocks.

Very disappointed

I'm pretty disappointed in the Xoom so far. My Droid X seems to perform better than it, despite it's single core. Is there hope for the following issues? I don't want to return my Xoom, but I'm just a tad upset spending so much on it...
These are the problems I'm having:
Slow downs using YouTube app
Slow downs on home screens and app drawer
Poor browser performance on all browsers (speed, display, text input)
Video recording and playback is choppy/unreliable
Bluetooth tether to Droid X is hit and miss (WiFi works fine)
Volume buttons are darn near impossible to use (lol)
I realize these are all software issues, and CAN be fixed, but does it seem likely? I know the G1 still has development going on and just want to get the most out of this mammoth.
I hate to say it, but I think there might be something wrong with your XOOM since I have experienced none of those problems. Perhaps it needs a factory reset or something?
I definitely agree regarding the volume buttons though, very frustrating to use! Thankfully you only have to hit either one once and then you can control the slider on screen.

Only problem I have from your list is youtube HD playback. Rest is perfectly fine.
I've found the Xoom to be sluggish at places, even after factory resets. I do think it's a software problem as my O2X (same Tegra chip) isn't slow at all.
Overall it feels like Honeycomb was a bit rushed, and that some things could use a bit more performance tuning.
I think this may be some issue with your device hardware. I got no such slowdowns on my xoom. I concur sometimes youtube hd playback can be sluggish, but it depends on the wifi you're connectrd to speed.
Sent from my Xoom using Tapatalk
mine works fine except hd videos in youtube. disable the hd once u can n it will be fast. u can try a factory reset too
one question: How long have you had your xoom?
The reason I ask is for the first couple days after i got my xoom I was AMAZED by how much slower it was than my EVO. After a couple days though it seemed to smooth out and pick up speed.
Overall I'm less impressed with the xoom than I expected to be but I would recommend to any new xoom owner to reserve forming any opinions about it until it sees at least a couple days use.
I guess I'll ride it out for a few more days. I've had it about 4 days. I'll likely go play with a display and see what I get.
Have you flashed a new kernel? The latest tiamat kernel is (in my experience) smoother then stock (and has SD support). But the main thing is wait a few more days for the slowness to stop.
Sent from my Xoom the way it should be, rooted and with SD card.
also you might want to take it back and exchange it i had a bad power button and a few of the problems you have stated in your post so i took mine back and exchanged. Second one worked great and fine so i decided to keep my xoom and root it.
Never had any of those issues listed either. Might want to try the Tiamat kernal and see if that helps out.
Maybe a lemon. Go back to exchange it. Mine is working kicking ass.
OK, so I installed the 1.4.1 Tiamat kernel and wiped data. She seems to be running much better now. The typing in web pages is still a little slow, but I no longer get repeated letters when typing quickly. That was a big problem. I'm much happier, but some things are still a little slow. Looks like things could get better. Thanks for the help. If it's still slow next week after no wipes I'll exchange it as suggested.

I noticed the same thing. I rooted as soon as it was available and even with OC it just wasn't smooth. I couldn't get a single live wallpaper to run without slowing the Xoom to a crawl. Then last night I flashed the latest Tiamat kernel and its like a brand new Xoom!
I was going to go back to factory to see if that was the issue, but instead I tried the kernel first. So the two things I did was flash Clockwork recovery and flashed the Tiamat kernel (which cleared cache and Dalvik cache). Whatever it was, its awesome and I have been downloading all the live wallpapers just cause I can!
Mine was a little slow as well and seemed to balance out. Still not as smooth as my Evo for video though, which is depressing. I really expected to see updates by now to fine-tune things.
The silicone cover from Moto completely resolves the volume button issues by making them more prominent and easy to find.

This doesn't sound anything like a xoom to me. Mine has been running very smoothly from the moment I first turned it on. I even tried to OC to 1.5Ghz but then I changed back to 1Ghz cause it was unnecessary. Maybe you should ask moto to check if there's anything wrong with ur xoom or even get you another one .

[Q] LAG :-(

I bought a vega the other day! I bought it off someone who put VegaComb 1.7 on, and I've over clocked it to 1.5 ghz and yet it still lags everywhere - would love help on how to fix this!!!
How do I fix it?
This is all part of the beta program unfortunately
I'm loving 1.7... it begins to lag after a few hours use but I just reboot

Thanks for replying
I know its still in BETA but yesterday it was nearly unusable which I was suprised at considering all the brilliant reviews it has.
I have now realised that it is running super as with a USB mouse it outrageously fast. However, home screen to home screen and along the home, back and apps touch buttons I the bbottom left they are really hit and miss. Sometimes it takes 2 hits and on the home screen it jumps from all different pages for no reason whatsoever!! I have tried the recalibration app and it doeesnt make it better. Any help?
