tmobile vibrant works great and no complaints - Vibrant General

I must be the only one in this forum with a working t-mobile vibrant.
Works great and never had the gps issue either.
Keep up the good work T-mobile!

You're not the only one.
my compass was wonky though, but the JI2 Rom fixed it for me.
glad to hear your's works fine.

I am on my third Vibrant...
My first one was perfect: GPS worked, no lag issues etc. Unfortunately the menu key became nonresponsive...

Mine works great also

My Vibrant is just fine
My Vibrant is working just fine...
Maybe its because I haven't tried to mod it.
At $300, I don't want to "brick" it.
Enough said.

Working great here too.

Never have lag issues just GPS issues. Other than that this thing has been wonderful ....

The one that I have currently works great. I returned my first one because the home button quit working, gps also sucked on that one as well. I knew that there was a problem because my wifes vibrants gps works great.

It's nice to see a thread complimenting this wonderful phone instead of complaining. I also love my phone. Rooted, applied the GPS flashable .zip, and lag fix, but since then, everything's been flawless. Well, the battery life could be a little better, but I get through the day. And the fact that I can't sync with my Google Groups is kind of annoying, too. Haha. But it's cool to see my iPhone friends drool over the greatness that is my Vibrant.
Cheers.

A good amount of people with problems are the ones that hack up their phones. I don't install garbage roms on my phone and I don't have any "lag" "fixes" on my phone and it works great. I updated my phone to JI2 and performance is exactly where I want it to be. Battery life is excellent, EVEN BETTER - despite the fact that I have Tweetcaster, Google Talk, Tweetdeck, Google News&Weather, Fancy Widget AND Feeds & updates syncing every hour or 3. 13 hours of time unplugged right now @ 60% left. Slept for 10 of those hours, left it alone for 2 and I've been used it for maybe 1 hour. Now I'm going to really wake up..
LOVING my Vibrant.

The people complaining are people who expect more from the hardware. This phone is a monster when it comes to specs, but its not showing it software wise, yet.
Personally, coming a blackberry, I don't notice any lag lol.

How you got install JI2... to make the phone run smoother. If you don't mind.

Love mine too...even more after rooting and debloating

Using Ji2 also. I haven't bass much problem with my phone, except for lousy 3G, which got better with Ji2, but is ultimately a network problem in my area.
GPS and compass were wonky, but Ji2 fixed that. I have never had the supposed lag that everyone talks about. Did they expect a beowulf cluster of MIT supercomputers under the touchscreen?
As some others have said, those who have problems tend to also run extensively modded ROMS and overclocked kernels, etc.

I switched to the Vibrant from the iPhone 3GS since the contract was finished and I couldn't be happier. This screen leaves the self-promoting "retina" screen in the dust. Black is black on this phone, period. Looking back at the iPhone, the colors now seem to be washed out. The Vibrant is really so vibrant and so light that I can put it in the shirt pocket and don't notice anything. However, after two weeks, I start seeing some worrisome symptoms. Occasionally, the phone becomes so sluggish that only a reboot will fix. I can't let the phone running constantly for many days without rebooting to get the responsiveness back. Even when a call comes in, the screen just not responds to touch until 10 sec later. The System Sound turns itself back so loud that when you reboot the phone, you have to keep the finger on the loudspeaker hole in the back to keep the sound down in the office and then set the System Sound down again for quiet shutdown. In side my house, the signal strength drops to around 0. Many time the phone just does not bother searching for signal any more. When I get into the car and drive out, the phone does not refresh searching for signal. I have to manually turn off and then on the flight mode for the phone to wake up, search for signal and lock it. This relock is very quick, but it's annoying that I have to remember to give the phone a kick to search after it looses the signal for a while.
All problems above are small problems, but they remind me the symptoms of Microsoft Windows before Windows 7 finally came. Any one has the annoying problems that I have? Note that I have Android 1.2 update 1 and I do not have any issue with GPS. Overall it's a much better phone than the iPhone, since I don't have the feeling of locking into ONE company for hardware and for software and I don't have to jailbreak it to get what I want. Thank you for all you guys writing great software for the Android platform. Samsung did a good job with this phone. Maybe Android 2.2 fixes all issues above. Can't wait.

How's your battery life?
I love the screen, too, but after two months with the phone I can't wait for 2.2 to hopefully fix some of the issues, and 3.0 to revamp the UI a bit - it's just not as smooth as the iPhone. And I hate the battery life compared to the iPhone.
But, the screen rocks.

hows everyones slide running

just wondering now that the slide has had a couple days of usage how is it running for every? is it still fast? any fc's? any other wierd problems popping up? im just asking cause im thinking of getting one but want to know if there are any problems with it.
I personally wouldnt trade it in for any phone out on the market right now. I would take this devce unrooted over any current android device on the market. Once it gets rooted...it will be unbelievable.
Being that I require an actual keyboard, its not a hard decision, but its far exceed my expectations. There are quirks that bug me...like the pull down notification. Having the recent used applications in there was a pretty stupid idea when its x5 easer to hold Home down.
You know theres some asshole of a sr. software engineer that pushed for that to be included + sizes to be the way they are, and someone under him going "i told you so" user interface issue like that dont just go over looked, it couldnt be more blatant.
But if thats all I have to complain about, Im in pretty good shape. This phone is nearly perfect (for me)
I got the chance to play with an Incredible today. I let him mess with my Slide. His had a bigger screen and a nicer display, but my Slide was MUCH faster than his phone, even with all of the bloatware.
I just noticed the Incredible was real choppy when going from window to window and in the app drawer. I was expecting much more.
hey all
i read a lot of these forums here on xda but dont really post too often.
ive owned the G1, MT3G, Cliq, Cliq XT, HTC Hero, and have had enough experience with the Samsung Behold II to say I wouldn't let someone give me that phone... having said that.
i have had the mytouch slide for about a month now (ha, only now ((since launch)) can i speak of it)
i dont use any task killing manager app whatsoever.. literally.. ever..
this phone is butter.. the 512 ram and the QCOM 7227 really help this thing glide... it has also been confirmed by HTC that it will receive the 2.2 Update. for that.. i cannot wait.
I'm loving this phone, and I'm the type that can always find fault with phones. Its as snappy as ever.

Mine has been running great, no fc's, still super snappy and I am figuring out how to get everything to play nice together (htc mail with gmail app, my custom ringtones, etc) I am still quite happy and impressed, although I would dump this in a second if the supersonic came to tmo.
Btw, holding home still brings up your recent apps (but I'm sure you already knew that!

Mine is butter as well. No slowdowns while running multiple apps.
I do wish the HW keyboard was a little more functional; autocorrect without having to turn off swype and maybe a directional pad. Its not bad though, just have to get used to it.

I bought mine on Tuesday have widgets on every screen.speed an responsiveness is top notch and this has the fastest web browser I've used on a mobile device to date.my main complaint and the only thing that really bothers me is watching my internal memory dither to nothing as install apps and themes.I'm currently at 50mb and that's with only a few apps and some themes installed.froyo can't come soon enough,if I get apps2sd I'll be fine with this phone.however if we don't get an apps2sd solution soon I'm afraid I'll be getting rid of this.storage is definitely a deal breaker to me.
Absolutely wonderful. My G1 screen was starting to die, and not having another HW keyboard choice is what forced my hand. Thought I would be getting a mid-range stand by till Q4 of this year, but I have been pleasantly surprized. It's small/thin, yet extremely potent for what it is. And though I'll probably be one of the few, the Espresso Sense UI is nice. I would simply like custom control over the theme. /agreed @ once we get root, this thing is gonna soar.

One thing that isn't working is hotmail. All other email works (exchange, yahoo, work) but hotmail doesn't work with stock or K9 email. Is Microsuck hating on Android?

Definitely blame stock WM6.5. I tried the HD2, and while I know I could have vastly improved performance by installing custom roms, tweaks, etc, I just didn't feel like putting that much effort into a WinMo 6 phone when we know that later this year Windows Phone 7 is coming. There will never be a major update for the HD2, which is sad considering the hardware is magical. I loved everything about that phone except everything that ran on it. I'm very happy with my Slide, and to be honest, it's a lot easier to hold than the massive HD2.
I've had mine for 24 hours now, and I can say Advanced Task Killer is a must.
When I first opened it, I had 36mb free. I scrolled through the list, and noticed that not only was every app I had ever run present, so were some I've still never run, actually, almost every app on the phone!
I started killing them one by one, and when I killed Twitter, my free mem jumped almost 60mb! After I killed everything else, it's like a new phone. I LOVE it.
I'm a die-hard WinMo guy, I actually was in the store *just* to buy a Touch Pro 2 or HD2, and wanted only to give the MT3GS a try because I could return it and buy the WinMo phone later.... Nope... I love it....
I've had mine since launch day and haven't used any of the task killers.....usually around 50 M free (damned GPS memory hog programs) and have no problems with lag.....quite unlike my G1, thank goodness!
I came from a nexus one and can I love this phone the speed is roughly the same and I love the keyboard also coming from the n1 all I can say is that the reception on the n1 is terrible this rocks
Mines is running so smooth and the on screen keyboard is great! I don't like how they changed the usb port instead of keeping the same one as the mytouch that I had so many chargers for. Not a deal breaker though.

SGS 3 days on......

Now that I have had a few days playing with my new phone I thought I would leave some feedback.
Firstly the screen is amazing! I have had several iphone4 owners grovelling at it.
Swype is a touch of genius! I am using it now to type this and its fast as hell!
The battery usage is pretty severe compared to what I expected! Does apps like juice defender work?
Gps is flakey! My tracks was bouncing all over the place, so I guess I am joining the rest of you praying for a firmware fix. I will try co pilot tomorrow to see if its usable.
Lag was a problem, however have been using advanced task manager and it seems to help. I know rooting is supposed to be better with autokiller, but I believe rooting invalidates your warranty? Also, when I reboot my phone I have about 150mb free, but after a days use using adv task man I only have 55ish.
Anyhow in all I am happy with the phone, just need to work on the gps and lag.
Btw, how do I figure out my firmware number?

in settings, about, and somewhere down the line.
You should be really restrictive when killing processes. Use the ignorelist for just about everything that might be used somehow by something.
Example, start the camera and it can take 2 - 4 sec to be ready to shoot. Have it idling in the background and its up in a split second. This goes for everything.
The onlu thing I kill is games, market and some other useless stuff i tend to run sometimes. Remember: you dont need a lot of free memory, for a quick phone you need your often-used-apps idling and loaded in mem.

Similar to my imrpessions in the first days. Screen is outstanding, the only reason I keep wanting to keep the phone. Swype is nice but didn't get used to it.. still type faster on my Nokia E72...but that is a matter of practicing.
GPS.. *sigh*. No comments. It is useless.
Also the lag was annoying but I won't complain much on that since I never tried any of the unofficial fixes.... still, out of the box it is a problem, definitely something Samsung didn't polish well enough.

About the battery, OP, wait untill you pass 5-7 initial charge cycles. Battery time increases twofold or more.
On my first battery cycle, it wasted out in around 11 hours.
Now i get more than 2 days of heavy use, and up to 6 of light use.

Your SGS must be really different from mine, perhaps even one of the 6 units that were released in proper shape worldwide. Hang on to it.
Not only you have no GPS issues but you also have no lag.
Mine has no GPS and it lags on the stock ROM (JM2)
Sure. There are lag fixes. And you can always buy an external GPS unit for only 150€ or so.
I just have the nasty habit of presuming I won't need to fix anything right after unpackaging and booting or pay more after spitting out 599€ for a "cutting edge" smartphone.

I really hope your right, as mine is still not great tbh.
I will try ultimate juice to see if that helps..
Should I be doing anything in specific in the charge cycles? i.e letting it fully discharge, or anything else?
Ref Lag;
I did experience it out of the box, but only after using lots of multiple apps. I found that task killer fixed the problem, and I have not tried any other fixes.
However I still cant understand my RAM usage.
150MB free on boot, which then decreases to 130MB after say an hour.
2+ Hours later I am down into the 90's...and after 8+ hours into the 60's.
This is using task killer regular enough...so not sure why it happens.
Thanks for the replies guys, much appreciated.
Mine could sometimes take up to 10 seconds to open the phone app on the stock rom. Very annoying. Especially when there's an incoming call and you can't answer because the answer key just won't show up. Now I'm running the jg5 rom and samset 1.6 rom. And everything is lightning fast now. Faster than my iphone 4.
Using the Galaxy S as well for a while now. The phone is AWESOME. After the lagfix this is the best android device I ever messed with. I thought I would want to change the launcher but after getting used to the iPhone like design, touchwiz is actually one of the best skins I have seen. Rotates both ways, you can change the order of the homescreens easily and you can have as many as you want up to 7. It offers some cool widgets just like Sense does and the menu can be all reorganized and not be mixed up by alphabetical order. Even the built in keyboard is awesome for me. Fits with the rest of the design and its multitouch enabled. And you have Swype preinstalled if you want that as well. The camera is awesome and despite the lack of flash you can still take some really decent pics with this if there is some light around.
The screen is just on the sweet spot. 4" with Super AMOLED. Im in heaven really lol.
Even my mum that is a complete iPhone addict is now surrendered to this phone capabilities. Nice job by samsung and obviously by the genius who developed the lagfix and 1 click root.

It's worth noting though that Beowulf_pt complained that reports of poor GPS and lag were the things holding him back from purchasing this phone (so I'm honestly wondering why he purchased the phone in the first place). Especially since purchasing it every post he has made seems to have been complaints about the GPS..
The Lag exists, but it doesn't make the phone unusable. Agreed it could be better, but whether it really affects anyone is questionable. It may be mostly fixable by switching scheduler and caching better. Remember, phones such as the Nexus one might be better currently, but they also shipped with a deluge of problems which are now fixed too.. Even the iPhone 4 did..
The GPS does have obvious issues (the accuracy indicator is still wrong, which to me suggests software), but other than the GPS, I am still happy with the phone. Also remember the battery issues depend on what you are running (some apps don't let the phone sleep properly).
I'm still happy to give them until Froyo to fix it. If Samsung doesn't fix it properly by then (and instead does something silly like tell us the "signal strength indicators are wrong"), then I'll try to get a refund. But at the moment, I'm willing to give them a chance.
It is surprising to read people who have no gps problems or lag issues straight out of the box, either they are very lucky and have bought fully functionaly sgs or are quite used to devices which take awhile to respond (I think it is the latter)!
Certainly there are fixes out there to improve the gps and lag issues but none have completely resolved the problem. I'm using JM5 which is working brilliantly and gps seems to work quite accurately especiallywith co-pilot no-other fix has been applied (to scared to!), the lag has also improved significantly but it does occassionaly freeze.
I'm also willing to give the boys at sammy a chance till 2.2 version is out or till Desire HD is launched, which ever comes first. Till then this is the best device out there inmho.
I too didn't notice any lag, until I installed the fixes, then the lag was noticeable as the phone was MUCH smoother.

Okay so I take it all back

I'm usually that guy that rolls his eyes at crying about 2.2 being released. I make jokes about your phone not automatically dispensing cash after you update it. I tell people to sit on it, it isn't that big of a deal.
Well I take it all back.
I've been running DK28 since it is was available on google (update zip). I switched to various versions of Bonsai, I've run TrulyEpic. I've been pleased with all of them.
The only problem I really have had was on all DK28 based installs, I end up with messaging locking up every 20 or so texts, and it will stick at Sending... until I reboot the phone, then it will send the queue after 45 seconds or so. No big deal really, just a nuisance, and I've seen many others with the issue.
Well two days ago I started getting the 'no audio' phone calls where you have to speakerphone on/off to hear anything. That I can't deal with. I know several have had it happen, but that is just something that can severely affect my productivity and must be stopped.
After fooling around with reflashes a bit I decided to go back to stock(ish). I odin'd back to DI18.
I figured CWM2.5, get my root explorer going again, organize everything how I want and just sit tight until we go official. Learned my fav GTG doesn't work correctly with 2.1; no problem, we'll use LauncherPro and suck it up some more. So I get everything organized how I like it and ready to go.
Crap this sucks. 2.2 really is nicer. Everything is more fluid. Menus are more welcoming in appearance. There is significantly less jitters moving between apps (I'm looking at you, Market). USB connectivity issues are resolved (I totally forgot how finicky 2.1 was with USB cord connecting).
And benchmarks? Yeah forget about them, the difference is depressing.
So yeah, sorry. We really do deserve 2.2 on this phone. It'd just been so long I forgot I'm still keeping 2.1 on it for now... possibly until update (2012 is just around the corner). I thought it might be nice to have a back-and-forth perspective for a change, as I haven't seen many people go back to 2.1 with intention of staying.
TL;DR:
Went back to 2.1
Misses 2.2
Still TL;DR:
Whaaaaaaa!
People keep saying 2.2 is faster. I've put 2 epics side by side one with DI18 one with DK28. Froyo is slower, not by a little, by a lot. Some small things operate a little faster, but in whole the entire user interaction is slower than eclair. I've tried several times, even swapped what phones had what OS, results never changed.
I went back to 2.1 and also think it is faster and a lot quicker to response. 2.2 seemed pretty sluggish to me. The 2.2 Roms were nice but I did not like Ext 4 so I just reverted back to 2.1

See that's strange because I went back and forth several times for about 3 hours last night making comparisons and on mine, it was just the opposite :/
Agreed, there are lots of little things in Froyo that are faster (transitions and stuff), but those I discount because they aren't really indicative of the speed of the phone so much as the way the transition is designed to appear.
Over all though, much less lag between applications on 2.2... the Market being one of the worst to open showing obvious jitters etc.
Funny as it is, I can live with that stuff; the things that really bother me are the totally superfluous things like cosmetics and the simplicity of sticking a usb cable in and the phone figuring out what I want to do on it's own and not asking me to unplug it, change a setting, replug it, etc.
Anywho.... I'll see how long I stick it out
I've been back on stock for almost a week now after trying various ROMs, and I've decided to tough it out until an official update if one comes at all. It's not a bad experience at all for me.
been running Baked Snack 1.6(DI18) over here...... crazy fast! especially on wifi. i like the idea of building a house on a good foundation, so sticking with DI18 for now.
DK28 is a POS... My 2.1 run faster and smoother then any DK28 I've tried... IMO developers should save their energy till we get the official release.
Quantum is nice and fast I got a live wallpaper and it's doing well
I keep switching back and forth between 2.1 and 2.2 Nebula with Ext4 and I have to say that overall, 2.1 with xtreme kernal and Syndicate is just as fast with great battery than the froyo roms. Although Nebula is performing great for me and I do have the occasional glitch from time to time, I think I'm gonna roll with it at least for another week

Quantum is buggy. Probably not the developers fault, as most of the issues are DK28, but I have been running Quantum 2.7 since it came out and I certainly wouldn't use the words "nice" or "fast" to describe it. Also, some of the bugs are absolutely not DK28. I am trying to be very careful not to insult the developer, but the issues that his rom has makes me want to do awful things to my phone sometimes.
I know how you feel OP. I can barely stand using my Epic anymore cause of the sickness it causes. I feel I've been cheated by just buying the phone, thinking that it was gonna be updated with some sort of quickness. It's just depressing knowing that when you spend that much money and are stuck behind 2 O/S upgrades. Hopefully we will get something soon, but I'm not holding my breath.

The way people are around here the last month or so, I'm not sure if that first sentence is sincerity or sarcasm
I actually had no care or consideration for 2.2 when I bought the phone. Wasn't the least of my concerns. I just wanted the newest Sprint smartphone, and I couldn't use an Evo because A) needed a slide out keyboard for certain things that the popup wouldn't work and B) Evos are far more moisture sensitive due to their construction and it wouldn't have lasted a week for me.
Having tried 2.2 out though, it just feels more natural to me. Everyone is back and forth on the speed thing, and that really isn't it for me. 2.2 feels more natural in a lot of respects, both in form and function where 2.1 feels more half-completed. Like comparing a spiral staircase to an aluminum ladder.
My point was that it really does, as far as feeling like a completed unit, -make- the phone. There are glitches etc that aren't part of my consideration as I expect them to be Beta related. No doubt 2.1 is more solid and probably faster at some things than others... speed isn't really an issue for me unless you count the App lag and jitters... they suck.
But yeah, now that i've done side-by-sides of it, 2.2 (in a completed non Beta state) really is what the phone deserves. I'm hoping it does eventually happen.
It's nice to know that the grass isn't necessarily greener on the other side. I'm sitting at stock and just waiting for 2.2 to drop. I have no problem rooting (I did the G1 bunches), but I just don't want to go to the trouble of rooting to find a different set of problems. As best I can tell that's what would happen. Even CM Beta 0 is buggy right now. I'll take the devil I know at this point. Thanks for sharing your story.
How is Quantum buggy? I use Quantum 2.1 here without ext4 and I'm not getting any bugs. It's the best rom I've found to date. Froyo is way smoother on basically every single thing I've tried to do than the stock rom ever was.

When I tap the power button to put the phone to sleep, it turns off the screen, pauses a second or two, then turns the screen back on with the lockscreen being displayed. It does this about 50% of the time. No other DK28 rom has done this for me, so its not DK28 that is causing this. The wifi toggle in the notification drop down causes errors probably 30% of the time with Wifi never turning on. There are SMS issues where it will freeze and not send messages. Friends have received multiple messages from me over and over for some reason.
I could go on, but I won't.

The power off issue happens to me all the time, and I am running stock dk28, so I wouldnt rule out it being just quantum.

Interesting. I ran stock DK28 for a few weeks and it never happened to me. Maybe the bugs I thought were from Quantum were just DK28 being buggy. Its not that big of a deal, yet it infuriates me. Can't wait for official Froyo to be done. Please Samsung, please.

How Do You Guys Like The Epic?

I have a relative who works for Sprint and they are going to get the Nexus S 4G in a week or two when it comes out. I am going to take their Epic off of their hands, upgrading from my Hero.
I was just curious how you all liked it? How does it perform, battery, etc...?
And is it as customizable with ROMs as the Hero is? I've had quite a bit of fun with the Hero, I just think its about time for an upgrade.
Let me know, thanks!
I dont know anything about the Hero. But i'm really happy with my Epic. I have it overclocked at 1.45Ghz. The devs that work on this phone have great support for there work(and more often then not, will help even if its not their's) The Custom roms here are stable. I'm running "SyndicateROM Frozen 1.1.0" with the "VisionKernel v1.2" and can't be happier.
I'm fine with mines. But I've always had a Samsung phone so I'd like to try a new phone for once. I get about 12-14 hrs of use with moderate usage, which is more than enough for me. I always have a battery pack with me just in case but I've never had to use it. I've tried many roms. And I think it is pretty customizable like the hero, but not 100% sure.
I love my Epic; I've had it since September and it has taken a ton of abuse with no issues at all. Roms are all pretty good, but I am currently running on a stripped/rooted EC05 and happy as can be with it.
The performance is outstanding on it; I played the benchmark game going back and forth between roms for the best performance but the bottom line is even stock it is plenty fast... sure it can be made faster, but the phone is just plain fast to begin with.
Battery life is not bad for what it is. I can make it through a day without issue unless I am playing games for hours etc. With normal web and phone usage I will be between 60 and 75% at the end of the work day. If I just blast it all day it will be 30-50% at the end of a work day. If I take it real easy it can go about two days.
I was considering going to the Nexus when it comes out, but I'm not sure I can handle losing the hw keyboard... it was the final deciding factor between the Epic and the Evo for me; and while I use swype 90% of the time (I expected to use the HW KB all the time), that 10% where I really just have to use the HW KB really is necessary for me (doing web based tech support/training sometimes getting client contacts when there isn't a computer accessible). For the keyboard alone it is worth it's weight in gold to me, and if some of my clients knew I was getting them through a crisis on a telephone, they would probably say the same thing
So uh yeah... you'll be happy with it.
i hate it
im getting a nexus as soon as its available on sprint

great input guys, i appreciate it!
can't wait to get my hands on this baby and play around.
nexus s will blow the epic away.. but as far as an upgrade from a hero.. you'll like it.
The nexus s is the same damn phone just with nfc and gingerbread which we wll be getting soon. I had to get a seido extended..I don't care what people say or what rom they use I couldn't get more then 6ish hours having the phone on with setcpu and not even using 4g or really playing music. I also went through multiple epics so it isn't like I had some bunk battery

^^^ Only downside of the Epic in my opinion. It can takes beatings. Mine has been dropped a couple of times. The gorilla glass is awesome. Not even a minute scratch and I've had the phone over a year. Developers are great. Does everything I want and need, and more!

Umm, it isn't possible that you've had the phone for more than a year lol. Unless, you were in the future for a few months, then came back to launch date.

I came frpm the htc hero. I love this phone! The development isn't quite as large but the phone's hardware is amazing. The hero had lag in many places and the epic pretty much has none. The epic's GPU is basically the strongest on the market (atleast for sprint, until the evo 3d comes out), so any gaming will work great on the Epic.

I agree with many of the previous post. The Epic doesn't have as many roms as the hero no true cm rom yet, but it will blow your mind! Very fast stock. My battery on stock, using the hell out it with screen as bright as it gets is usually 8 hours maybe a lill more. On custom roms 10 plus heavy use. Phone is a champ and handles anything thrown at it. You will have the equivalent of the nexus s because they are the same phone I know people holding the s now. The screen alone is amazing and upscales the worst video you can play. All in all you are very lucky to get this upgrade and despite some heads clashing this community will reach out and help you each step of the way myself included. Need anything pm me no hesitation!

The Epic has excellent hardware. The stock software, on the other hand, ranges from a joke to a nightmare. Plan on putting a custom ROM on it to get the most out of the unit; I run SyndicateROM and the phone performs far better than it did on any of the previous stock ROMs.
I'm very happy with the phone itself, however.
I like it a lot ever since cleaning it up. That's the key to the whole thing I think.
The only issue that I have with my Epic is the Build quality. I feel that Samsung cheapened up the device to the point that it scratches it self from opening and it can be loose. That stuff aside it is an amazing handset and well worth the money.

You don't need a custom ROM, IMHO. You just need to remove junk from stock.

+1 to this. I might not be rooted, but if I did, I know this is all i'd do, right along getting the accurate batery mod.

You're going to love the phone. The keyboard is the nicest you'll ever get on a phone, its really fast and the screen is going to blow you away. I'm using a custom rom Syndicate Frozen and I have had no problems at all compared to stock.
Samsung Epic 4g
I agree with most of the posts in here so far. I love my epic and it is really easy to customize. Personally, I had to make the switch to custom roms not only because of performance increase, but mostly for the battery performance increase. I would get 6 - 8 hours tops on stock off one battery, now I average about 18 hours. It feels weird not carrying my extra battery with me everywhere now!
The devs here are amazing and support their roms very well. Hats off to you guys!
My only problems with the epic are:
1. semi-sketchy opening mechanism. I've had 2 epics and both of them had/have a loose feeling screen after being used a while (to be expected I guess)
2. Lack of fm radio - there are apps to "fix" this though, and I guess I wouldn't really use it that much anyway
3. Lack of tv - out. This is being worked on, but I can't stand the fact this was disabled.
enjoy your new epic!
I haven't come across a ROM yet that improves battery life when the device is being used.
They may help the phone idle and sleep more efficiently but cleaning up the stock ROM does the same thing.
My two biggest improvements came when I froze System Update and removed SNS.

Back to stock observations

Well as I found out when my SD card died it also took out my GPS, nothing will make it work again. So I put the phone back to stock, got the ED03 Froyo OTA update and took it into my verizon store, long story short I'm getting another phone tomorrow. I've been rocking on the stock froyo for a few days now and its kinda wierd since I've basically been rooted from day one. For one battery life is horrible with anything turned on, however with everything toggled off my battery life is alot better than any custom ROM or undervolted kernel. I didnt expect that. Phone isnt as laggy and i expected either. Whats really bizarre is when your stock the Market actually WORKS! No matter what I flashed my Market was always laggy, sometimes never worked at all. I usually have to start a download two or three times. This was for any ROM or kernel I tried, I assumed it was normal. Well on stock Froyo, the Market loads immediately, when I click to dowload it downloads and installs immediately. WOW! Now when I get my new phone I'm gona root it , is there anyway to get this good Market performance?
I don't have any market issues on comrom 1.3
My phone performs much better on stock ED03 than Community ROM v1.3. Is there a lot more broken with that ROM than the kernel & status bar?
For the past few days I've also been running stock ED03 with the basic bloat removed and minimal apps installed. Battery life is a bit better, but it's still not great. The phone is typically dead (or screaming for a charger) by the end of the day with normal use.
Everything seems to work with the exception of bluetooth calling (after I hang up) in my car. At first I thought it was those custom kernels causing the issue, but even the stock kernel/ROM does it.
After I hang up a call via bluetooth in my car, the phone crashes and bluetooth crashes which makes the phone hang for a minute or two. I can turn bluetooth off then on to get it to re-connect to the car, but it'll just crash again after the next call is done. Through some reading, I found that Samsung is real shady with their implementation of bluetooth. I can believe it based on our GPS issues, jacked up RIL code, weak wi-fi signal and a lower overall cell signal than other phones.
It's **** like this that keeps me from wanting the SGS II.
I'm out of the loop but it seems as it stands LG is the way to go

I don't know I just played with a htc thunderbolt yesterday at a verizon store and that thing is bad ass even without 4g. If us cellular got that phone id be all over it. But from what I hear we getting the moto atrix which I'm not a huge fan of...now that moto xoom tablet on the other hand...if verizon wasn't so damn expensive.... My $.02 haha
As for the stock experience I just flashed back from cm7 to stock and all I got was pissed off haha

ive had issues with the market in custom roms too. sometimes when i download an app instead of installing it just disappears, and i have to redownload it sometimes more than once to get it to install. but that wont make me go back to stock. custom roms/kernels are waaay better than stock and theres bound to be some issues here and there

I had the LG G2x for a little over a week and it wasn't too bad. There were very minor annoying things (which I cannot remember) that reminded me of Samsung, but it wasn't as bad. It was supposed to be stock Android, but a developer soon discovered that it wasn't. It was just themed to appear stock, so I don't think the G2x currently performs as good as say a Cyanogen ROM.
Also, that phone was plagued with that reboot bug. Outside of the reboot bug and the LCD screen, it's not a bad phone. I couldn't keep it because A) the software bugs reminded me of why I don't want another Samsung. I'm not going to buy a phone and put up with that BS again - although, that phone should get heavy dev support soon; B) Maybe it was the 4" screen or the bottom heavy bezel or the bleeding LCD screen, but I felt the phone was too much of a lateral step rather than a step up from the SGS series of phones. I needed more to keep myself satisfied.
LG has the potential to do good, but so far... they're on shaky ground to me. Just like Samsung. They need to fix the reboot issues and stop copying Samsung.
As it stands I will stick it out with my Fascinate till I see a Verizon phone I really like. Which sucks because I don't see any on the horizon that look promising except for maybe the Motorola Targa. When it comes to community efforts there are two reasons I look to them from time to time -- stability and believe it or not BLN
Beware of the LG Revolution when it drops. It's not going to be a "With Google" device, meaning Verizon is probably going to beat and rape it until it's a mere shadow of it's original self.
Running stock ED03, rooted, modified to support cwr, de-binged, de-bloated, and deodexed. I did this all myself, a lot of reading of how to's. Next up I found something on converting rfs to ext4 I hope it easy enough and works well. So far its great, with the prospect of awesome, if file extention Change is doable and improves phone as much as I read about.
