[Q] Bluetooth and search on Google/Yahoo/Market. - Nook Touch General

Does the N2E (1962934272 bytes eMMC) have bluetooth or not. Confusing threads out there so…. If yes, how can it be enabled and can it be used to listen to music on bluetooth headphones?
Search anywhere switches to the B&N search… can that be configured to do search where its intended?
EDIT: Hoping to listen to music so if there is any other alternative to bluetooth.

i got the search on google/yahoo working by installing Opera mini browser but i can't get search in market... it goes to B&N search.
I tried the apks from both these posts but i get [INSTALL_FAILED_ALREADY_EXISTS] for both.

Please help.
Bluetooth anyone?

Fallows, mayby we need to remove apk of search somehow?

domi.nos, could u please give removal instructions...

Sure. But guys you see I don't own a Nook now, it should be mine in 2 weeks. So I am unable to test it but I know in Android a bit.
I've digget a bit in 1.01 update file. Could someone check if you can fix that after you delete a file /system/app/GlobalSearch.apk?
If it doesn't work you'd better copy it again.
But i am concerning to make default launcher and other apps use normal android Search. We even have it in out system files, but i dont have nook so unable to do anything.
Just, could anyone check what it going on if you delete it?
And if some problems are going on on device just update it using http://su.barnesandnoble.com/nook/n...Dpomf5qvKtTeXxjxcgaa2cS/nook_1_0_1_update.zip

Hi, any update on this? Do you know how to fix "search" issue - I cannot use several apps because of that (e.g. dolphin mini browser, slideme market,..)
I tried to delete Globalsearch.apk but it didn't help.

Sorry definitely no Bluetooth. At first we thought it did but we were getting confused with a very similar chip (part number ending 0A rather than 2A). The block diagram for the chip in the Nook clearly has Bluetooth crossed out:
http://www.jorjin.com/WG7310-20.html
What made it confusing was that it still has `BT` in the specs, but this is referring to WiFi BT coexistance mode.
So the only way to add Bluetooth would be to get a 0A chip and replace it with the 2A chip on the board. But this scale of soldering is too fiddly to be worth it and practically impossible at this scale.
Hope this clears things up.

Some questions I have having used it this weekend

1) Co-pilot.
Tried it on a long journey [where I knew where I was going].
I found that the screen lock kept kicking in turning it off.
I turned this off via BSB tweaks (took a while turning it back on!) but still had to contend with the screen darkening very frequently unless I touched it - voice prompts were fine but at complicated junctions the visual clue is important.
How can I stop this happening please? Do I have to jump through alot of hoops everytime I want to use satnav, then remember to turn them back on again afterwards?
2a) Bluetooth Sending
From the album I find sending via bluetooth is not supported. To do this one has to delve into Bluetooth Manager; fine for music which is easily identified but for pix and videos you only get the "img" or "vid" id and so cannot tell which is which....
2b) Identifying image/video ID
speaking of which, how do I actually find out what img/vid name a particular one has? Could not find a name or "proprty" from the Album
1) there is a setting in co poilot to keep the 'screen alive' not sure what the exact setting is called but its there
2)i think you have to use a file explorer to send via bluetooth, there maybe other ways of doing this
file explorer would have the same issue as BTManager as in I would have to know the name of a particular pic wouldn't i?
How do I find out the name/label of a pic anyway?

Kingelon / SWatch K2 MTK6572

I just received this watch yesterday, bought it through Aliexpress (search "SWatch K2" or "Kingelon K2").

This is a complete replica of the Galaxy Gear. Build quality is excellent, looks like they use all the same screen, shell and band (with camera) of the original GG. Sealed non-replacable battery in a relatively thin body (about 11mm, same as GG1).
It uses MTK6572, has 4G ROM (about 1.1G usable), 512MB RAM. Pity there is no microSD slot to expand the memory.
It has only one button (to switch on watch / wake screen, and be the Home button). To navigate, swipe down from top = back, swipe up from bottom = menu.
There is a true Android 4.2.2 device and not some cheapo phonewatch with Java apps. There is access to Developer's options and USB Debugging (mine was set "on" already). This allows use of ADB to install apks.
No there is no Google Play store, no built-in web browser or video player. I am sure you can install these apps manually (I dunno how to install the Google Play package and I dont intend to do that).
Yes there is wifi, bluetooth (connects to my BT keyboard and working) and GPS (not tested).
I have not really tried out the apps, but they are pretty standard ones. I have also not tested the connection manager to the phone.
What I have done is so far are:
(1) Root the watch - after many failures using MTK Droid Tools, Framaroot, eroot etc., a friend gave me a tip about this chinese root tool called Kingroot. It is very successful in rooting most if not all chinese phones particularly those using Mediatek chips.
It installs its own version of superuser called kinguser, and its own version of su binaries. I thought what the heck lets give it a try, and it rooted the watch on the first run, and has no problem since.
Kingroot download page (Google translate) - choose "Kingroot PC ..." version
The program is in chinese. Installation was full of funky unreadable characters but most of the responses eg yes / no are the highlighted buttons. After installation, there is only one button to press. Just like all other one-click root programs, enable USB debugging on the watch, plug into USB cable and click the button, and it will do it all for you. Your watch should have rebooted when the process finishes.
(2) Back up the firmware using MTK Droid Tools + SP Flash tools - I followed this guide:
http://pinoyscreencast.net/how-to/get-full-rom-dump-stock-rom-mt6572-mediatek-smartphones-using-spft-mtk-droid-root-tools/
CONCLUSION:
This is a great find!! Excellent build quality, lightyears ahead of ZGPAX and SmartQ ZWatch. The hardware is similar to the Omate Truesmart / InWatch Z, except it is 4G ROM / 512 RAM with about 1.1Gb internal memory usable. I can live with this for the price of < USD 100.
You should go and buy this watch now because it is going to sell like hot potatoes. I am not going to test all the apps or answer questions about them, because they should work the same as Omate TS.
I am NOT a developer so dont ask me to do this and that cuz I dont know how to. I only back up the firmware in case I screw the watch up.
Hope that someone more knowledgeable would buy this watch to tweak and develop it. Then you can ask him questions.
I noticed this watch as well a couple of days ago. It looks pretty good, but the thing that still concerns me is the capacity of the battery, which is only 350mAh.. What are your experiences with the battery life so far?

are the photos saved to the phone or on the watch?
is the watch readable outside?

!! Major setback !!
!! MAJOR SETBACK !!
[ ORIGINAL POST DELETED ]
Thank you doner03 for the solution - keyboard on smartphone will automatically pop up when you need to type something eg. click on writing aread of notepad app, when watch is connected to phone by BT and SWatch manager (smartphone companion) app running.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=53405588&postcount=16
(1) Don't bother installing a virtual keyboard on the watch - there is no input menu in Settings to change keyboard settings and set default keyboard. If you use a keyboard switcher app eg. Quick Keyboard Switch, it will force close when you run it.
(2) Although BT keyboard works with the watch, once you install SWatch manager app, the BT keyboards will stop working. You cannot delete the paired BT keyboard from the BT menu, and if you paired BT keyboard and your smartphone, it may make SWatch manager stop working. If you can use your phone to type on the watch, there is no point pairing your watch with another BT keyboard anyway.
timtop said:

The watch does not come with any virtual (onscreen) keyboard. I also discover it is NOT possible to use an onscreen keyboard, because the input functionality has been removed by the manufacturer:
If you go to Settings, there is only "Language" (normally this says "Language and Input" in the usual Android devices). There are no options to enable, change settings on, and set default to keyboards.
I googled and found a post describing how to use ADB shell to enable and set (as default) keyboards. I followed the instruction but it does not work.
I asked in that same forum (the respected Android Stack Overflow website), and I got an answer confirming my suspicion that this function has been removed on this watch.
It is not as simple as the access menu has been hidden or missing.
It would be nice to have an onscreen keyboard, and I guess either BT keyboard or phone keyboard via the phone companion app have to do!

How the hell do I type?? (sorry voice search is slow inaccurate and need BT connection). Without KB, you cannot use the watch to browse the internet or make notes etc.
The SmartDevice (maker of SmartQ ZWatch) scores in SW development - they actually think and add useful things such as (1) keyboard input (through the phone and watch companion) and (2) "auto screen on / show time when you raise your wrist to look at the watch" (by gyro sensors).
(1) keyboard problem - although I can pair BT keyboards with the watch, as soon as I pair the smartphone with SWatchManager app, I cannot get the BT keyboards to pair and work anymore.
(2) auto screen on / show time when you look at the watch - I tried both "Autoscreen on off" and "Gravity Screen" from Play store, which should provide this function. However, both apps force close when I run them. I suspect the watch only has simple gravity sensor but not the more sophisticated accelerometer and/or gyroscopic sensors.

You might need to install an older or earlier version of "Autoscreen on off" and "Gravity Screen" if available, search for it via google. You won't get it from the default app store.
Earlier version might not force close.

after the rom dump process went through smoothly, i tried to reload the backup firmware: All the different parts of the firmware are there except "uboot.img". The author of the above guide also mentioned this file was missing, but he found out that it was renamed to something else. In my rom dump, there is no additional file which is unaccounted for and might be the image file. I dunno if you absolutely need this "uboot.img" to unbrick the watch.

download the google search .apk (newest version) to phone (i like to use the download folder in phone its makes it easyer to find in phone) with your phone open the smanager app use remote file manager
click the three white dots at the top right click send file select sdcard0 then find were you placed the google search.apk (in my case i told it to go to teh download folder) in your phone
when you find the apk click it it will bluetooth transfer the apk to your watch when it is done
Part 2 go into your watch opens apps look for file manager in watch click phone storage look for were you put the search apk (remember i used the download folder) then click the apk then it will prompt you to install app click install the there you go
p.s dont install every app you see because some apps will crash the watch even popular apps (mostly apps that look at your contacts these apps really screw the watch up) skype works but contacts in watch will no longer work once installed (untill you uninstall)gmail works chrome works google maps works (do not turn on gps you can only look at the maps you can not do a gps search with google maps) it will crash the watch gps function is kinda of a joke in this watch
or
in watch under dev options turn on usb debugging
unplug then replug in the watch to pc it will ask to turn on usb storage click it then the watch files will pop up on the pc drag the apks to the watch then just follow
part 2

install google search apk it is the only app that comes close to a keyboard that can work in this watch
do not leave wifi on in watch if your not using wifi it will kill the watch very fast
i know when you first get it its a new toy and your gonna play with it for awhile but they ship the watch completely dead so let it fully charger before you play and remember if you try to use this watch as a extra android device to browse the web or emails 30 times a day and not just as a watch it will only last about 4 hours if that

Which cloud/sync app? (Nook battery/wakelocks)

Been a long time since I posted here.
I don't use my Nook as much as I I could or I think I should. I think the main reason is that I haven't been using apps which sync across devices for fear of ruining the very good battery life.
What are some good apps which integrate with say Chrome? What things have you found useful? Do you toggle WiFi on and off? If so do you then need to hit sync or does that partial wakelock reciever for detecting that WiFi is on and off do that for you? Or will this app keep trying to sync even when there is no wifi?
I think if I start using something like ReaditLater again (tap button in chrome, sync and then read on Nook)... I'll probably use it more.
Also, pulling apps off Google Play and installing the apk was better for battery but I can't get the apk extractor websites to work anymore. Did anyone have a workaround for that?
One more thing, I have been using the latest Cyanogenmod and I notice it comes with PrivacyGuard. Now, the interersting thing about that is that PrivacyGuard now has options to block autostart, keep device awake and wake up device. So this could be useful to put in a ROM, or something like it, bearing in mind the nice battery life we get. Or, maybe have 2 modes - one with everything disabled for hikes, and another for use at home where a charger is handy and the auto sync is more useful.
Apologies, didn't search well enough:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1898358
(adbsync)
Yeah, Renate NST's adbsync program is definitely going to be your best (and really only) option that fits your description.
Thinking about it, there's probably more efficient ways to do it.
For example, Evernote, Unified Remote Full, Wiki Encyclopedia Offline. I don't think Pocket (formerly ReaditLater works anymore very unfortunately... that was my favorite thing)
But of course, getting these things working on the older Android now could be difficult. How do I get the apks from play these days now the various website extractors don't work?
And ways to automate adbsync. For example, have it as a schedule in the background along with adb connect to your Nook. But remember to give the Nook a static IP on the WiFi by assigning via MAC on the router.
If you save pages as .pdf and automate the sync that's good but browsing pages as pdf isn't great.
edit to avoid bump:
You can use it as a 2nd monitor.
Windows:
http://superuser.com/questions/62051/is-there-a-way-to-fake-a-dual-second-monitor
(then use VNC to access. My thread has a howto for install) (MaxiVista probably works to if you're prepared to pay or steal)
Also possible on other platforms. The key phrase to use when searching is "Extend desktop"
I don't know why I didn't think of this before but you can access Evernote through the web interface. Probably similar for OneNote too.
A browser I heard is good, possible better than Opera now is NakedBrowser and the apk is available from the authors website.
I found a way to get the apk is to find an old phone to install too and then use an apk extractor app. A desktop extractor would still be better
Edit again;
I'm still not using it like I feel I should. I think this is because it's just not as Easy to pick up and read. The problem with advanced is that I have to wake up the nook, turn on WiFi and then hit my sync script on the desktop. Because of this I only use it if I have a lot to read, like a full book. I envisioned using it for just reading lengthier forum posts and white papers.
A start I think is to disable the screen saver.
Next will be to put enabling WiFi and keep awake while charging, and then disable after a period if the user fails to cancel and it's unplugged.
If you know how to do either of these things please let me know.
edit avoid bump:
I can't install the tasker apk unfortunately... and they're not giving out licenses anymore without Play. Is there an similar alternative is now my search..
Would be really good to enable and disable adb wireless and wifi when plugged in.
Actually there's a fix for tasker asking for a .jar. So it should be possible tonautomate connecting to WiFi and adb WiFi. Just a matter of getting tasker license or something else. AutomateIT won't run.

My Nook is currently out of commission, but I know at one point I had Pocket running (while it was still called ReadItLater), so there might be an old apk floating around that works. Alternatively, you can setup Wallabag, which is the same thing but run on your own server. Between that and a feed reader, I had thousands of articles to pick from whenever I picked up my Nook. It was quite a delight.
Also, there are a couple of wifi saving tools that can be found in F-Droid. If I recall, I used one called Battery Fu to have my Nook connect, force a sync, then disconnect once every few hours. It worked quite well.
thanks FbYAx
I looked up wallabag but when I try to install every version back to 1.6 I get the message 'older SDK'. I guess you had an older version... but I don't know how far back i have to go.
i will have to start archiving and hosting apks that work
edit to try to be a bit more helpful for people who might be trying to do this same:
get android version (mine is 2.1. i think that is normal (kitkat)):
Code:
adb shell getprop ro.build.version.release
change sdk apk version to see if it was developed without using newer sdk stuff (force it):

Coaxing GrooVe IP to work?

Yeah, I know it's kind of "out there", but consider the problem a proof-of-concept exercise
I've found an old version of the app that will install and "run" on Eclair--but not so old that it still tries to log into GoogleVoice. I can get past the intro screen but for the "sign in" screen I get a white-out condition except for the little bar that says "Sign in". The menu options (help and exit) can still be brought up.
I use GrooVe IP Lite on my Nook Tablet and a cheap little unactivated Kit-Kat smartphone I bought as a dedicated mp3 player (after my beloved Insignia Pilot died :crying. It works great for an emergency call if you can scare up wi-fi----and it's free (to any land-line in the US or Canada--cell phones too, I guess). In this respect it seems better than Skype to me unless you have a lot of overseas contacts (I don't).
So....I uninstalled the current app from my little Kit-Kat device and side-loaded the old app. It ran just fine, allowed me to sign in, etc. Once signed in and exited, the next time the app starts you are already signed in. Hmm. I started digging in the /data/data folder for the app and came across two xml files of preferences, one of which clearly contained log-in information (my assigned telephone number, my email, etc.). So I tried copying that file to the same folder on the NST, hoping to get past the indomitable white-out. No joy. Same behavior AND when I checked the xml file I had overwritten it had been returned to a generic state, minus my personal data
I tried two other things. I reactivated the old phone.apk system app. That made no difference. I didn't try the telephony or whatever that other one is. I also started up USB audio before going to the app, thinking it might check for audio capabilities (and it still might) but that made no difference.
I'd probably never use the app on the NST but I am curious about what is keeping it from working. Perhaps the voip server just rejects log-in attempts from really old Android systems.
Any ideas?
Sorry for necroposting but this topic is in line of mine reasoning to use device as much as possible as it is. So if it does not have camera why would you need a Skype or Whatsapp? As a VoIP phone that is OK. Did you made any progress on that one? I am asking because I have a feeling that it might be possible to write an application that would work like VoIP/SIP/web phone to completely remove Phone.apk that reside in NST.

No, I eventually gave up on the idea. It was only a lark from the start, just to see if it would be possible, but the demands of the task exceeded my knowledge. GrooveIP has changed the way connections are made as well as encryption schemes several times over since I first looked at the issue. All that aside, I doubt that the device could now login to the new servers even if all the code were properly in place.
Re: Phone.apk, on the NST this is where the control of the Android volume resides, so if you remove that you lose the ability to control the media volume (or any volume, for that matter). I eventually discovered this after a lot of flailing around with kludges to prevent the media volume from blasting out when using USB Audio. Many people had deactivated or deleted Phone.apk (me too). When I re-enabled the app I suddenly had access to the volume controls.

First thanks for reply. Second does that mean you won't have anything against me trying to do something like that... it might not be GrooVeIP since I haven't decided what service would be optimal to begin with. Third I have read your experiments with Phone.apk and that part of volume control resides there that is why I suggest not to remove it but rewrite it in a more usable form. Even if I fail doing that at least I might have satisfaction in knowing that I tried.

By all means, give it a try! Supposedly some versions of WhatsApp would run on the NST. Again, whether you could log in to a server is another matter.

I also think that WhatsApp would fail since company promised support for devices with Android older then 2.3 would be maintained until February of this year. Still some other existing software might go through installation process and be registered using code sent to mobile phone that have same software or maybe I find something new who knows.

Looking for a headunit

Since i got a new/old car and i am not too happy with its radio right now I would like to exchange it and get an android device.
Actually right now I am a bit torn between an android unit and a pc. I know the pc is more expensive but as I read around the internet, right now it has the following advantages for me:
1. I can choose freely which hardware it has.
2. Bluetooth works fine.
3. It will support Windows 10 so i can use cortana - which will give me the option to use it more or less hands free.
4. I can use Kodi for Radio etc.
5. it might just run android as well
6. pretty much all apps are more or less available
7. with Kodi i can customize the look (in my opinion way beyond of what i could do with different launchers)
8. Kodi supports radio traffic service
Now that I have listed all the + Notes on the PC version here comes Android:
1. A lot cheaper!
2. Works out of the box.
3. I don't have to buy the apps again (as i have bought them already and use them on my phone)
4. Theoretically I can use Kodi (afaik "just" not for radio)
5. Afaik bigger community
BUT(!)
I was digging around and found following problems which i'd like to ask you guys if they are still an issue:
1.) So far no Android 6.... so no Google Voice for hands free
2.) Bluetooth is at best buggy (incomeing calls show no name from the phonebook just the number) other devices such as obd do not work or if they work only the ones from the manufacturer of the headunit will work. Bluetooth connectivity is limited to one device at a time.
3.) I am limited to the Apps from the manufacturer as far as radio goes. (i think most of the apps i have seen are ugly - i don't want to see the frequency of the station I am listening to... especially not as big as i have seen it.) DAB(+) Apps look somewhat ugly as well. There is no real chance to change that.
4.) there is no support for radio traffic service
5.) Customization is limited
My questions are:
1.) Is what I am saying still correct (for example the bluetooth issues).
2.) Does anyone know a work around for the Google Voice? Preferably without the need to press a button. Or has someone an Android 6 device and can confirm that Ok Google works fine there?
3.) Is it at all possible to implement the Radio(FM/DAB+) into Kodi on Android - has someone done this? Maybe even something like a navigation software? (yes - i am a kodi fanboy -actually more or less from day one - i had a old xbox - the first xbox running xbmc in my car with linux and a gps built in)
What I would like to have in the end would be a system where Kodi is loaded up as soon as the car starts.
Via Tasker (if possible) I would grab the infos from torque and implement them in a custom skin in kodi. I would love to listen to the radio via Kodi and if at all possible have navigation in there as well (but if that does not work I will find a workaround - i already have one in my head)
I know this is a lot and many of you might think tl;dr but if anyone could answer my questions anywhere I am convinced that it is here on the mighty xda board.
Thank you guys so much. (If I get this all to work I will of course post all of it here (skins, tasker skripts etc)
About Android vs Windows and head unit vs PC, I think you'll have to decide on that for yourself. Nobody here can tell you what's the right choice for you.
As for Kodi, I haven't dived into it much, but I have a more typical use of the head unit I guess. Google voice works in 5.1.1, but you need another launcher and you need to install the required apps from Google Play and enable everything. I have it working in mine, but decided to have it activate on a button press. I do have to switch between apps and stuff, and the BT caller app is a little quirky to use. I would've wanted something more inline with the default Google dialer, but no go on that one. Even if you install Contacts and the Google Phone app, they don't really do anything. If you want complete control over everything, then PC and Windows (or <insert OS her>) would be the best choice for you. If you want to save time and have something that is fairly easy and quick to set up out of the box, then a head unit with Android would be better.
Thx Hilari0 for your answer.
May I ask what Unit you have. What are the pitfalls? How did you manage to solve or work around the Bluetooth problems (i saw that joying for example released an update - can anyone tell me if that fixes the bluetooth problems?)
Is it more complicated than on other devices to install another launcher?
Thank you!
I have the Joying Intel 2GB/32GB head unit, the 135 variant. The bluetooth on it worked well out of the box with the update installed, but it was vastly improved following the instructions in this thread:
