[Q] Wireless Tether blocked? - Droid X General

I went to use it and a web page from Verizon came up saying I needed to purchase the tethering plan to use the feature. Anyone else get this?
I was wondering if there was a workaround.
DX Gingerbread OTA rooted.
Thanks.

Don't tether using any ROM based on the OTA. There is plenty of tracking software in the stock ROM. 2nd-Init ROMs are your only safe bet, unless you remove the tracking packages yourself. And make sure you don't miss any. I'm not saying that custom ROMs won't have it removed, but what if something is missed? If you can bypass the VZW message but they figure out that you're doing it you could get a hefty bill.

Using that would make it completely untraceable even on just the rooted OTA?

Supposedly, but even the dev won't guarantee it. If you plan on using multiple gigs per month, you should flash and 2nd init rom. Those are not traceable from my understanding.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App

I think it has to be using Froyo base too, right?

No tracking on froyo based roms. They don't have the datamanager apk in them. I'm thinking that's one of the reasons more people still on froyo versus gb.

Yeah I read the page and I wouldn't be going anywhere near 5GB I just use it occasionally for a few minutes at a time. Thanks for the help.

I'm using the CM4DX - GB version of CM7. Is that considered a 2nd init rom? I'm using (or will use) Barnicle wifi tether.

Tether on dl30?

Saw that on jts aosp that it is not ok to tether on his build, does this go for dl30 as well?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
From what I understand yes... currently the kernel has a way to tell if tethering is taking place...
stupid question. I can still teather with what I'm running correct? or can they now detect me too?

You're fine, it's DL30-specific.
I'm curious what all it detects, as in does it just detect the hack to let you use the 3G Mobile Hotspot app for free? Or does it detect most of the market apps as well, like Barnacle, Wireless Tether, etc? And, of course, is anyone working on ripping that out yet?
Whoever gets to the bottom of this and fixes this will most definitely receive a donation from me.

Does this apply just to jt's aosp, or does it apply to the stock verizon build that adrynalyn posted as well?
I believe it applies to both, with Kaoscinate being the only Froyo-based rom not impacted- although I don't know for sure.

Uncapped Data for Stock ROM?

How do I uncap data on a rooted stock rom? I REALLY do not want to go to a custom rom. The stock is amazingly fast, and I love Motorola's Blur interface.
I'm looking for the same thing.

*bump* anyone?
I wouldn't mind knowing either. None of the GB roms are worth flashing at this point in development.

Owenbeals - where do u get apex 2.0? I tried Apex 1.4.1 and it was awful. Glitchy and max free ram was 150mb. I went back to OTA 340 because I really missed motoblur and free ram was around 250mb

Any chance of getting this for 596? Or better yet, would someone be willing to share some instructions on how I might do this myself?

On GB 588...up to 59x worth it?

After much gnashing of teeth and unbelievably patient assistance I upgraded to a stock rooted GB.
I love it. I admit it...I was wrong:GB is THAT MUCH better than froyo.
So...
Is there any reason to bare the slings and arrows of outrageous sbf-ing to pop up to 595 or 6 or 1?

I was on .588 for a few minutes today from .340 and after upgrading to .595 it seemed a bit snappier. During my time on .588 the sync icon would not go away on my taskbar and the lockscreen took a few seconds to unlock. I'd say the upgrade to .595 is worth it just because you're set to get the OTA from it.

You shouldn't need to sbf at all to go from .588 to .595.
So I'm hearing that of the various 59x versions its 59FIVE that I wanna move to for compatibility with an OTA upgrade ? And there's a flash method via droid2 bootloader?
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA Premium App
No... You will need to be stock froyo in order to receive ota according to p3droid
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
I would stay with .588. I have heard it is a little harder than sbfing back to froyo. Also the .596 ota is coming out soon and it looks like the bootloader is changing. Once you make the switch to it there will be no way back to froyo. And currently there is no root for .596. I know I can easily sbf back to froyo from .588 so when a rooted version of the ota is released then I will make the next switch. If you are stable and happy stay where you are. If there are a few bugs that are bothering you. You might think about going to .595. Just read about getting back to froyo if you choose that route.

I was on. 595 for around ten minutes before I bootlooped my phone and the linux sbf worked like a charm.
Sent from my Xoom the way it should be, rooted and with SD card.
Would be nice if the new bootloader would be unencrypted...but that'll only happen in my dreams.

I am staying with the apex beta on 591 because it is aosp based and there is no bloatware to slow down my phone. I will update when the roms update.
i see no reason to switch as you cannot switch back to froyo.... not that i have any intention of going back I just have no desire to switch to the new version until a deodexed + rooted version slides out... i think its silly to even consider atm but thats just my opinion.
if you want OTA fine, but this is XDA... i thought we were all here because we DIDNT want the easy way.
I am more-or-less stable and happy on 588. So I'll just sit tight . But when the OTA upgrade becomes available from Moto Ill have to be back on Froyo ? Or is the jury still out on this?
Thx for getting back

The problem as I understand it is that Verizon wants that bloatware on there, it's a revenue stream for them. Especially the Verizon app store - pops up on my screen every time I plug my phone into my computer.
I have read that in the new Gingerbread release, it will be the first icon in the tray because the icons will no longer be in alphabetical order. That will make finding the correct icons so much easier in the menu.
I can't wait.
So Buttes says 595 will ota to 596, but owenbeales reports thar p3droid says unrooted froyo s necessary to OTA .... Anybody got clarification ?
Also...any opinions on ota596 with bloatware performance compared to the previously released 59x rooted stocks?

Best rom to wifi tether

Hey I'm on rooted. 602 gingerbread and wanted to know a good rom that could wireless tether from? if not I'll just flash to froyo and run liberty froyo and tether from there?
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
I was under the impression that all you needed to do was download the wireless tethering app but i feel as though your implying that the rom can impact the efficiency or the possability of the wireless tethering. is that true?
when i was on froyo i was just rooted and used the wireless tether app i downloaded from google. and it worked great
It's weird since I've been on gingerbread I always get errors trying to tether and the verizon tether app tries to start, i wonder if miui would work on. 602?
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
you know the only rom i've every got to work was liquid and i only had it for a couple min before i decided i really didn't like it and i reverted back to my CWR backup. I have been considereing Miui or Liberty and i'm pretty sure i've read that people have wireless tethered on both but unfortionatly thats all second hadn information but if you do decide to flash miui let me know what you think and how you did it lol I would be very interested in hearing a more recient opinion of the Rom

Well you can leave it on the sd card for easier unpatch if you have to bring. Phone in under warranty. But you shouldn't need to do that. All you need to put on the sd card is the wugfresh patch
All you do is download wugfresh. Flash zip from recovery then open tehter and select droid x. That's important VERY. Otherwise it won't work.
Also don't forget to backup before you do anything.

How come wifi tether doesn't work after I did update
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
Miui works great for tethering witch the miui rom takes a little time to get use to kind of reminds me more of an iPod but I would also recommending cm7 wit h has a couple issues with the camera sometims not working witch there is a patch out for it if its needed. I do not recommended using wifi tether on stock the because after a few hours with the phone being on I would get issues with the internet randomly going out and not coming on till I restart phone and dont k ow if any one elts has had that problem

Can I ask which rom your currently running?
I'm trying to get this to work for a friends phone.
I rooted the phone, then used the patch, but wifi tether does not work.
My next step is to install a new rom. Just curious which rom you're on so I can just pick one that works.

Need some quick guidance.

Guys im sure as hell no newbie to rooting my own personal phones , but tomorrow my sister is visiting me from Florida with her new Evo on a fresh sprint 2 year contact (yeah dont ask) but anyways she wants to root her phone to tether on WiMAX. Could you guys guide me to the right links on rooting her phone and tell me which rom will be a kick ass rom for her. Most likely that will be the ROM she'll stay with for the rest of her contract.
Searching old thread isn't my thing. I rather suscribe to my own thread.
Also is the rooting process hard? My EVO 3d was a pain in the ass.

It all depends on the software. If its on 2.2 froyo you would use unrevoked. If its on GB 2.3.3 you would use revolutionary.io and if its GB 2.3.5 you have to use HTC dev unlock. I recommend that you put tommytomatoes classic rom on her phone. Its 100% stable and fully working and has great community support

+2 on tommy's rom. Is under the new evo 4g original development section. As far as rooting go is pretty straight forward, just find out which android version she is running ( which might be 2.3.5 ), and go from there.
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
Depends on preference, Tommy's rom's great. but have some variants for her. also may just show her some rom's she'll most likely want gb for stability and best performance. also HTC Sense rom's lagg a bit in my opinion AOSP seems to lag less for me and run more in a operational fashion.
edit install rom manager on her device and keep her stock rooted tell her she can change the software via that app. screen shot's info and downloads all in one nice little user friendly app.
Thanks for the great info guys. I'll be working on her phone tonight.
Just to make sure, with these roms, she still be able to use the HDMI out on the phone?
