a little help please? - Epic 4G General

I used to switch roms constantly and always be messing with my epic. About 6 months ago I got to busy and havent been able to make any changes since.
The rom im running was a beta of something or another and is rather unstable at times etc.
Im leaving for vacation tomorrow and need to know the fastest and easiest way to get back to stock / a stable non touch wiz rom.
Im sure my clockwork etc are all way outdated to.
If anyone can point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated.

I'd say either just odin back to stock for now (if you just want stable) or flash SRF 1.2. I know where you're coming from when it comes to going on vacation, so I suggest either of those two would work just fine.

Recommendations please Help

I just got the eris on the 20th of july. I had heard that HTC was really good but I have started running in to problems.
I rooted and I am using evil eris rom 3.0. I noticed yesterday that the awake button started not working after further investigation I noticed I could tap on the side and it would wake up.
Also just noticed today that was getting pretty hot and using the battery significantly. only lasted 5 hours.
I am considering returning the phone as I have 30 days.
Anyone have any Ideas
Search through the forums for specific problems you are having, then trouble shoot. Have you reflashed the ROM? Tried any others? Did you do a nandroid backup, if so have you tried a restore? The phone could be complicated so if you don't want to put in the effort id recommend returning it.

Did you ask your question in the Evil Eris thread ? Maybe others running the same ROM are having similar issues.
yeah, I tried two other roms for a short time I liked this one the best. At first I didnt have any problems.
Are you suggesting i wipe this flash then reflash it again.
Also are you suggesting I restore the original.
Ive been searching just Havent found anything yet.
I really would like some input on if you guys think I should work through this with the phone. Are these phones reliable and such I dont mind tweaking it a little to get it right. But I dont want to have constant problems
HTC does make great phones. However, you shouldn't base your opinion of the phone off of hacking into it and modifying it (especially being a less-than-a-week-old first-time HTC owner who hasn't done a lot of footwork to troubleshoot the issues).
Yes you should wipe and reflash the rom and see if that does anything. If that doesnt help, do a restore (supposing you did a back up). Also a lot of these roms are over clocked so the phone can get hot from using it a lot especially if its on the charger.
Since you rooted your phone, you have void your warranty. Basically if verizon decides to check the software builds and whatnot and discovers you have rooted, you might not get another phone. There are threads on how to unroot your phone, so I suggest doing that before you return it if you decide to.
Also I might suggest sense able 3.1 very stable rom

Hey bud thanks for the positive feedback. Your help is greatly appreciated.
I do really like the phone. You know all that power in such a small package. Thats the reason for these forums I believe so that we can help eachother.
Ill try that and see what happens.
I really hated my eris until i started using froyo based roms.. They are a bit buggy especially the camera but well worth the effort even if just for battery life. I went from 15-20% lose an hour to 5-8% unless i use alot of data.. then its more like 10-12%.

[Q] Where do i start?

I finally got my droid x about 2 weeks ago after waiting almost a month on backorder.. Since i ordered it ive gotten an pneumonia lung infection as of saturday tonsilitis and fevers.. Plus two weeks in i got laid off so this hasent been the greateast of time. Ive been pretty out of it and yea.. anywho. I got this and first thing i did was Root via the "DroidX Root" with the Root Me and UnRoot Me " buttons. Ive owned a G1 and a Droid Eris prior to all this and loved em both. Rooted them gotten the recovery image's custom roms ect. With this im getting confused. I think its partially because ive been so ill and disoriented half the time. Also because of this efuse crap and what not. Yes ive googled and searched but again ive been fairly out of it so im still not certian what i should do here. I downloaded some apk file Recovery Bootstrap v1.0.0.3 that i was told i needed to get but again...
I want or at least i think i want to get to 2.2 im currently still on the 2.1 build it shiped with. i have *228'd it or changed the firmware in any way all ive done is rooted it.
Im having issued with the data connection. My browser seems to hang a good 50-60% of the time wether im on my wireless g connection at home or on 3g. Ill listen to slacker radio and often it stops for sometime and either wont resume playback until ive closed and re-opend it or just does it on its own.
Ive heard of people getting roms on it but others tell me there not "real".
Also its "fluid'ness speed" seems to be jotty at times. I havent hardly installed much on this and its slows down really bad at times.
Basicly i like modding my phone and really enjoy all the work people put out to fully give us the full capability's of these pieces of hardware we buy. But i dont feel like im getting that.
What other suggestions can you all give me to do to my phone, to speed it up back it up remove this crapware like dlna ect. I have seen some threads about doing this but then people telling me they get stuck at the boot logo cause they messed something up and i dont really wanna do that.
What have you done with your phones? How well do they run?
Thanks for taking the time to read my post and i look forward to everyone's reply

Sorry to hear about your problems. I just went through a week of hell before being diagnosed with pneumonia this June. So I know how it felt.
Basically, even though 2.2 OTA is available, if you mess up your phone while modding, there is no stock image to fall back to, so you'll be stuck with a bricked phone.
The best solution right now is to upgrade to original 2.2 leak. Then you can install leaked 2.3.15 which is the same as OTA (with a difference of being deodexed and rooted). In this case even if you have problems, you can always flash original 2.1 back and start from scratch.
rootzwiki has a good amount of info on how to do all of this. But of course feel free to ask questions.

Sitting on the fence

So here I sit, on the fence, with my rooted stock Epic.
Nothing has really substantiated the rumors of Froyo for the 21st, and that just makes me think it's not coming (and if SamsungJohn was going to finally say something substantial, a yea or nay would be a nice start).
But this is not a thread about the OTA.
I'm just thinking... if OTA is really imminent, then I'll just wait and let the devs work on it. But if it's not... then it's time to look at one of the available ROMs.
ViperRom 4.0.4 looks damn sweet... love the ViperWheel widget... but it was held up from its Monday release (are they waiting for source code drop too?). And there is Midnight and Nebula which I kinda like also.
I guess I could start the process of checking them out.
Or I could just sit here and wait. I'm going out of town this weekend and probably should leave things alone until I get back home.
Until then I ask anyone who is running those ROMs... would I lose Swype if I switch ROMs? I really like Swype...
I am stock/rooted, pretty much in the same situation. Will wait until the end of the month if no stock Froyo materializes will look into roms and modding a bit. I depend on my phone's functions all working for my business and would rather not take a chance that I will lose functionality by flashing to the Froyo leak.
i was waiting like you guys til the other week and i went to bonsai, and everything is working superbly.
I was getting sick of stock rom and 2.1, not being able to have hulu or flash as well as a few apps that are must have like Humans vs aliens as well as Andy-83.
Im now just waiting for the official source so it can be improved, but ive had no issues on bonsai and reccomend it, if you want something fast and clean..
give the latest midnight a shot it works really good just wipe 3x before loading and be happy. swype works for me just have to switch text imput method from gb to swype.
Soooo. Oh., before that... I am so glad I rooted and mod. I ran midnight ... and cut my teeth on the ext4 .... the cwm .... and after root and rom messed around with themes. After my ver of midnight got a few weeks old I switched to bonzai and I love it too... it just works. Wait a few ... but its worth it.
Btw ... will we have to wait a while for the new stock 2.2 to get rooted or... is once root always root? Curious.

ROM's
I spent last weekend loading up all of the different (read more popular) ROM's and the most stable and straight forward one to me was Nebula Seven Sisters. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=863154
The developer made it a point of keeping a lot of the stock look and features while improving on what Froyo brought to the table. I did not have any real functional issues with Viper, Midnight or TrulyEpic, it just seemed that Nebula was trying to keep the experience closer to stock than the others.
Other people will say they like the modified skins, the launcher pro, the Viper wheel, etc. For them, that is the case. That is the great thing about the developers of the ROM's, they are doing this to cater to different crowds.
So really, there is no need to wait for Sprint or Samsung here, download Odin, grab some ROM's and have fun with your phone! All I can say is to make Clockwork backups often, it makes the process of going back to the ROM you liked two days ago so much easier!
Randy
could try the Syndicate Rom, for 2.1.... see how fast the 2.2.1 roms WILL be after source... but other than that, they are all stable from what I read, some people have a few issues, depends a lot on you though. If you have a ton of stuff to reinstall after a clean wipe, might as well wait out the weekend, not for an OTA, slim chance there... but just so you have time.... sometimes things take longer, you may go thru 5 roms before you find the one you like... etc.

DK28 is buggy but it is better than 2.1 by far. You really don't lose anything by going with one of the available ROMs right now. Presumably they will all have an update once the new version is sent out from Sprint (whether it be on the 21st or not). If you're running a custom 2.2 ROM, you'll just do a CWM backup, update to the newer version of whichever ROM you like, and then restore your data.
I went back and forth between Quantum and Bonsai ROM today. It takes no more than 10 minutes to fully swap ROMs. Just do it, you'll be glad you did. And if a new version of 2.2 comes out in the next 5 days, it will only take a few minutes (max) of your time to upgrade to it.

Is 7sisters smoother than bonsai?Im asking because I want minimal rom so I can add my own things to it.
Well, I've just flashed DK28 and CWM just finished converting to EXT4. It's party time.
Viper brings some great stuff to the table.
Nebula is stability first, which is important to me since my business and my phone are virtually inseparable.
I also like Midnight's BYOR modular format, keeping bloat to a minimum.
I'll have a fun time with this.

No need to odin, odin only if nothing else works!
In ur case pull out bettery, put it back in,hold power+vol down+camera to get back into cmw3 and try again.
This will save you some time.
Everyone should be warned of one MAJOR issue. If you use you phone for primary internet access anywhere you go; whether at home or at work or wherever. The tethering drops you no matter what you use at random. It is very frustrating and annoying. If it wasn't for this I'd be 100% satisfied with nebula already; but it isn't the rom's problem, it's with DK28. Some people use wireless tethering but I cannot with 2 different desktops I use my phone for internet connectivity.

Make sure you watch some of Randy Shear's videos on youtube if you're new at this. He very slowly goes through many of the basic steps in putting a new rom on your phone. If you skip a step you cause yourself triple work. Just take your time and watch a few of his video's and just put the rom on your want. His Viper Apoc 4.0.2 video is excellent.

Want to go back to stock

Im currently running Bionix, rooted, etc. The only benefit that I've seen is the tethering option. I appreciate all the hard work that goes into dev-ing, but this isnt something I want any longer. I want to take my Vibrant back to stock, preferably running stock Froyo. Is there a tutorial to get this done? I tried searching the forums, but to no avail.
odin then use mini skies to get froyo
Check out the Vibrant Bible for how to guides:
Vibrant Bible
search for the stock ka6 rom (pretty sure there are odin and cwm versions) and install it.
Before you abandon ship, maybe try another rom. I didnt have good fortune with Bionix... I'm in heaven with Trigger. Not trying to sale something here, but its leaps and bounds better than stock froyo... and now that source is out, the development on froyo is going to jump tremendously. I wouldnt jump ship man.
If he doesnt see a speed increase or a better gps lock speed there is no point in him staying on a custom rom. Bionix has been the best for me even though I do enjoy trigger and flagship.
I am fascinated and captivated by the vibrant screen on my epic galaxy s.
Go here: http://androidspin.com/2010/08/09/how-to-restore-or-recover-your-samsung-vibrant/, to flash your phone back to stock, this will bring the phone to exactly the way it was sold by T-Mobile (Eclair).
Then, go here: http://www.capfaq.com/w/Kies_Mini, to download Kies Mini which is Samsung app that will let you upgrade to stock Froyo.
Cheers!
Looks like you're rooted because of Bionix so use this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=923456&highlight=ka7 instead. It's CWM flashable. Stock ROM w/o voodoo.
I'm personally using it right now with supercurio's stuff on it though.

You could have had tethering running stock with Touchwiz. I am surprised that you didn't find the 2.2 features and other upgrades in Bionix to your liking.
Things like
-Assigning different rings to different contacts without having to create the contact on the phone
-Voice actions
-A calendar that actually syncs properly
To each their own, i guess.

Without knowing what software version you're on, the first part of your question is hard to answer. As for the second question, what may be the best ROM for one user may not be the best for another, so it's up to you to decide which ROM works best by trying a few out.

Go to Menu>Settings>About phone to find your software version. As far as "most popular", I can't really help you there. There are too many choices and I haven't flashed a ROM on a OG EVO in awhile.

If you have a hardware issue with the device, the software on it is irrelevant. And Sprint services rooted devices.
Thanks for the heads up Cap. BTW is it possible to make service/3g better on this phone? I feel like when I was using ASOP Rom the service was a lot better...At times my text messages dont go thru, I seem to get drop calls more often, & things just feel a lot slower on this stock sense rom that came with the phone..
Cap what ROM are you using?
Is it possible for 3g to be worse using stock sprint sense rom vs an ASOP rom ? I remeber when I had ASOP rom my 3g would hardly lag compared to now its constantly lagging...

I just flashed Evervolv KitKat on my OG. More accurately I just restored it. Before that I was running Omni, but I have to do some work on that to get data working. I think I might need to borrow ril from Evervolv.
AOSP is slimmer than Sense, so the device will typically run faster with it. But I cant imagine signal is actually better, since the stock stuff is built specifically for the device.
Well Im not sure about that. When using AOSP my 3g hardly ever stopped working when I was at the gym. Now it stops at least 5 times...Does everything work on Evervolv KitKat Rom cant seem to find it on the forums? Im trying to find a ROM where all things are working well & is very fast.

that's the general consensus, eh?
i just brought my og evo out of retirement after my wife lost her iphone 5.
i figure this can tide her over until we decide what to do...change carriers, what phones to get, etc...
if i want her to have a phone with working/hacked hotspot and wimax...is there anything over gingerbread that will run it?
also, will i be tied to sense only roms?
thanks for the suggestions, gang.
