BACKGROUND: im pretty new to the android scene. as soon as i was starting to get the hang of WM 6 i decided to see what the android hype was all about. i read several reviews comparing the Dx and DInc and decided imo the Dx was better and my first choice. well 3wks ago i got a great deal on DInc that was already rooted and running 2.2. I played around with it a little while and havent had much time to research it. 2 days ago i got a good deal on a Dx, which was my first choice anyway. its unrooted and running 2.1 (unsure of updates). for the last 2 days ive spent several hours reading up on rooting and 2.2. so far ive found the droid x guide pdf (posted here a few days ago) to be the most informative and best at giving sequential step by step instructions but it hasnt quite answered everything for me....
THE QUESTIONS:
1. probably a dumb question. I havent activated my X yet, is it possible to root or upgrade to 2.2 while the device isnt activated? i havent seen anyone even touch on this subject but im assuming its not possible since i cant even get past the activate screen to change usb modes, activate debugging, or toggle bt/wifi.
2. does it matter if i update to froyo or root first? is it easier if i do one or the other first or would it get the same results? in the mentioned Dx guide it says one click rooting "for 2.2" so my assumption this time is that id have to update to 2.2, and then root.
3. you can ignore this question if youd like cuz i havent even checked into yet but do any of have any suggestions on which ROM/2.2 version/kernals (unsure of real definitions and terminology) would be best for a regular person just looking for stability and to get a little performance boost and remove some bloatware? i know its personal prefrence and probably in 5000 threads already but thought id go ahead and ask since ive already asked the other questions and it would save me lots of time researching. Thanks!
i know i probably answered my own questions but id like to be sure before i start the process. this is my first post and im pretty sure im gonna be bashed for being a noob and will probably be told to use the search function or google it but i have lol. im on several forums and know how the process works. thanks to all of you brainiacs on here for all the help you provide to us not so well educated guys ;-)
Thanks in advance,

1. If you want to get past the first screen touch the 4 corners of the screen in succession starting with top left, top right, bottom right, bottom left (so I have read). If you wanted 2.2 you could use the freshly leaked 2.2 SBF and a program called RSDLite 4.8 (i think is the latest version). I have never performed the SBF before- so I can't say - some say it is a breeze, for others it was a nightmare.
you would search for...
VRZ_MB810_2.3.15_1FF_01
that is the 2.2 SBF
2. If you do want to update and sbf is the only way (once you get the phone activated you would not need to use this rsdlite sbf method. You can just download the update through the system) then root it after you get 2.2
3. As far as roms go- I love rubix1! Awesome. No problems (for me). only thing I had to do was "patch up" the camera to use 8mp. Not hard though. It is a radical departure from the normal x though. you may not like it. If you just want fast and stable stay with the stock set up. People that complain about blur are crazy heads- a lot of useful stuff in blur.
And of coarse - if you do any of this and totally screw up your phone - sorry. Don't take my word for it. Read around and get some confirmation b4 you do anything.
Hey thanks for the tips, advice, and opinions. That's exactly what I was hoping for although I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "if sbf is the only way..... I won't have to use rsdlite sbf..." . I guess ill go ahead and activate tomorrow, try updating through system, and root last. I was just trying to avoid possibly losing my ability to tether temporarily if rooting didn't go as planned because I have no other source for internet. Which reminds me, do I have to get a different tether app afterwards or is it safe using the preinstalled WiFi hotspot or similar preexisting app?
I've read several places that its important to copy a certain file first encase it gets stuck in boot loop. Which file and what directory Is it in? Will I need to get a file explorer app first to get to it? I'm uses to winmo devices that already have a file manager but I know with my Dinc the first thing I was told to do is get astro.
Rooting won't be a problem. Just activate and take whatever updates come your way. Check into the Koush recovery and ROM manager for backups before you play with any ROMs or themes, if you decide to go that way. Titanium Backup and Root Explorer are also essentials in my book.

Awesome! I activated that next day, updated to official 2.2 and Rooting is simple. Now im wondering why everyone made it sound like brain surgery lol. The hardest and most time consuming step for me was figuring out how to switch usb mode to mass storage. In windows mobile its in settings, android hid it pretty good and hid it right out in the open lol.
After some searching online to find out how to switch usb modes I found the universal super1click method and the page had a link to a youtube video. After watching that video I felt stupid. Before hand I felt like a bomb technician diffusing his first bomb. Even being a noob I rooted my DX within 6-7min after watching it. And most of that time was spent waiting for my laptop to boot up and then download the file. To all you noobs worried about rooting, have confidence, do a search for android super one click root. I think the download was here on xda but I don't think that the page with the video link was on here. From what I understand it work for most android phones. If you are familiar with unzipping a zip file this is a breeze. I am in no way associated with the creators, unfortunately I don't remember their names to give them any credit, this was just my experience.
Now that I've completed the rooting can someone fill me in on tethering? All I need to know is if I can use the tethering and hot spot apps that came on my DX Or do I have to download a different 1? Which 1 are you using And why?
Thanks again for those of you Who contributed to this thread. Next of it looking into those backup methods. If any first timers would like me to walk you through the process I used then shoot me a pm. I'll be happy to help you just like everybody was happy to help me.
OH YEAH! does anybody know of an app or hack to make my screen dimmer? I've got it set as dim as it gets. I work nights mostly in dark places and my screen is so bright it really messes with my night vision.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
As far as the tethering goes im not sure but I believe you can use the one on the phone ....for the screen dimmer you have a power contol widget built in the phone or you can download an app called power control plus ...the app let's you place a widget for each individual control you like whereas the one that comes stock on the phone you are forced to use the whole control panel ..also you may want to look into beautiful widgets its in the market and has a ton of widgets ...hope this helps you!
now that you are rooted (simple wasnt it!) you can use barnicle (available in the market) or "code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/detail?name=wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre11.apk&can=2&q=" (remove the quotes) -wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre11.apk - I use both and both are hit an miss with devices.. for example, another handheld device wont see it, but my laptop which runs Intel proset wireless sees it..
I am in the same boat as you.. rooting was simple, now I am trying to understand backup's and custom roms.. with blackberry it was easy - with droid there is so much more that can be done, but there is more to learn.
good luck
jim
Gmenfan83, I found a decent screen dimmer in the market right after I made that post.I don't know why I hadnt checked the market before. I guess I had assumed that nobody in their right mind would want their screen even darker thant the manufacturers lowest setting lol. I've already been using the power control widget on the phone but I've found out its only lets you go as low as 15 percent and need it to get way lower. At the same time I really don't want all of the clutter from the advanced widgets with all the options since power control works fine for everything else. I was just looking for something very basic. I did learn something from reading about all of them though. If you use an app to set lower than the systems predetermined lowest setting of 15 percent it will go back to 15 percent when you close the app. So in order to maintain the setting you must leave the dimmer program running in the background. Dimmer, the app I am using now Is almost perfect. You make a shortcut for it and when you click the light bulb it auto dims to ten percent. when you click it again it goes right back to your previous setting even if its set to automatic. The only way it could be improved for my needs would be if you could adjust the value because 10 percent is still too bright. I need it at about 3 percent lmao.

Awesome app. I tried barnicle yesterday and only had one instance in 3hrs where my connection slowed and stopped. I just stopped and started tether again and it was fine.

I got titanium backup pro and wow its really useful! I had forgotten to do a factory reset after froyo and rooting and wasexperiencing a few fc, errors and stalled sometimes. I used titanium to back up all my apps sys files and settings. After I did the reset and restored, I used titanium to freeze bloatware. It seems smoother now but got another error last night. 1 other thing, a few of my settings didn't stick when i restored and im wondering if maybe I havent corrected them all because now I have a new sync-like sys icon that is always on my taskbar and it wasn't there before. It doesn't ever do the spin animation and it wont go away. Other threads have said that means background networking enabled but I've changed it and the icons still there. What else could it be?
What should I learn about next? Lol.

I have just switched over to verizon from AT&T a couple of days ago. It was an impulse decision as I was only in the Verizon store with my girlfriend to get a her a new phone. I was showing the sales guy my pimped out Samsung Captivate and explaining to him him how easily these things can be manipulated and how much I loved my Cappy. Thats the last thing I remember. I woke up to find I had switched my service (3 lines) over to Verizon and I was now the owner of a Droid X.
I loved my Captivate and had no thoughts of ever switching but they had a promotion going on that blew my AT&T plan out of the water so financially it was a good decision. But I am beginning to wonder if I haven't made a mistake.
Out of the box, the DX is rebooting pretty often. I had planned on getting on here when I got home to find the latest and greatest ROM anyway so I didn't worry about it too much.
I am currently running Liberty 1.0 as my first flash. That is of course after flashing .340 which I read may or may not fix the rebooting issue. I am liking the ROM but the random reboots still persist. Its beginning to get too much to bare as I have yet to have one phone conversation that isn't interrupted by the phone powering down by itself.
I have searched for any word of a fix for this but I haven't found any definitive answers other than to do a factory reset. I have done that several times, as well as reflashing .340 and Liberty to no avail.
Before I take 3 phones back to Verizon and crawl back to AT&T and beg for forgiveness does anyone have a definitive solution for this?
Its worth mentioning that I bought my daughter a DX as well to replace her Cappy (she is NOT happy BTW), and it does the same thing. It is still stock out of the box.
Thanks in advance for any replies.
I have a Dx and haven't had this reboot issue, however, my sister traded in her iPhone for an x on my advice and now she's having the same issue you are. I was going to have her flash to liberty and do a system restore but obviously that hasn't worked for you. Hopefully someone will have an answer to this problem

Send the phones back to Verizon, that is not normal.
In my opinion, not to say you don't know what you are doing which I am sure you are, I know you are well aware of the risks of flashing roms.
I hear more people having issues with Droid Xs that have been re-ROMed, flashed, themed, etc, then I do people with stock DXs that are rooted and cleaned up of bloat.
While my DX might not be clean out the box, it's still in prestine shape, rooted and even flashed to Cricket. I have never had a single issue with it unless I am bricking it or messing with it myself.
A lot of times, people mistake the phone as the issue. These were $600 phones when released, still are (give and take a few bucks lol). I doubt the issue is hardware. Send it back to VZW or try the Full SBF 320 using RSD Lite. It's been the talk of the town.
Could be that there's a bad batch of DXs going around that have just been released? None the less, VZW can get you replacement DXs over night practially.
Sbf to stock and reflash liberty. Or take it back a get a new phone.

Ben you are right about people messing up phones by flashing. But generally taking them back to stock will fix any issues that have risen from tinkering.
My issue is that mine did it out of the box. My daughters did as well.
Funny thing is just this morning I updated my daughters with the .340 update and it seems to have stopped. Its been quiet now for about the last 30 minutes. I reflashed .340 on mine at the same time and it has rebooted about 4 times while I type this message. Maybe my daughters is fixed, but mine is definitely not right.
Thanks for the comments.
My sisters phone is also doing this bone stock. It doesn't always reboot sometimes it locks up and she has to pull the battery. She's taken it into the Verizon store and they reset it to stock (not sure exactly what they did). That didn't fix it so she took it back to exchange it and they told her " that's normal, sometimes you have to pull the battery." So they wouldn't exchange it.

Sadly this is has been a small issue with the DX, it's been posted many times. Mine did it when I first got it back in August and at first I was blaming Handcent on the reboots. Then for some reason it just stopped and I have never seen it reboot on it's own. Was it the update to 2.2 or removing Handcent? I've reinstall Handcent since so I honestly I don't know. Side note I still blame Handcent on the phones lag because when I uninstall it the screen redraws and the lag goes away.
Anyway there is a great big long thread on this at the Moto DX forums and Matt's (forum admin) advice was to return the phone for a new one. I would arm myself with a printed copy of the thread in case Verizon wants to throw a fit.
For the record I just dig this phone. I'm stock, rooted with just bloat frozen. It's been a great phone after the teething problems were solved.

For those holding out on root & awaiting "Official 2.2 OTA", DON'T!! -> read w/in ->>
When I got my Evo, I wanted to wait for the official Sprint ROM/OTA upgrades because I wanted to keep my phone stock. I didn't want root to affect my phone's ability to OTA upgrade and get the latest and greatest from Sprint.
After many advice from others, I decided to root. This is where you will see the repeating theme - "I rooted and loaded a ROM and have never looked back", or "I rooted and upgraded the ROM from the dev section and have never been happier". I certainly agree.
The fact is, when (now IF) the official 2.2 comes out, you will get the EXACT OTA content here just as quickly (probably faster) and be able to flash to that if you wish. Most likely, at that time, you will want an enhanced version such as deodexed. It is not worth holding out on root just because you want the OTA.
With root, you are opening new options such as forcing the phone to roam only, make real/full backups, modify your phone both visually and functionally, and so much more. After root, battery life can certainly be improved by tweaking your phone (remove bloatware, keep unwanted services from starting, etc.)
When I got my Epic, I rooted immediately. I have been running DK28 since it dropped and enjoying what 2.2 has to offer. If/when the official comes out, I will upgrade. There is simply no risk of missing out.
So for you who are on the line, I encourge you to root and move forward. You will have a new world of options and enjoy your phone so much more.
Cheers.
It's true, and we're not that far from seeing a true Gingerbread port too.
Not to mention, with Odin, this phone is extremely hard to FUBAR and very easy to revert back to stock if needed. One click root makes the rooting process brainless...
I was in the same boat a few months ago. I viewed "rooting" as a hack or purposely "damaging" the phone. Eventually, I caved in; everything is hindsight from that point. Now, I will NEVER use a stock ROM again. Having access to the system allows me to take control of the device that I OWN; not Sprint or Samsung. If I don't want and application on the phone, I simply remove it. If I want to change the appearance, I install a theme.
Honestly, if you own an Epic, there's absolutely no reason why you shouldn't root the phone. Heck, I'm not even using 2.2 for the lack of a stable GPS lock...

I agree with most of this. But from my point of view, I don't even use it for the control, I use it cause it works better. Oh, and the themes. I just hope the devs and themers stick around a while, cause I have this phone for another 20 months :/
new devs and themers will come along. the cdma touch pro 2 is approching 18 months in age and when i stop by that forum, its just as busy as ever, and i dont even recognize the names of roms people are talking about, because the chefs that were cooking when i was rocking that have moved along, but new ones are stepping up in their place.
Installed TrulyEpic 1.2 last night in just a few minutes. No problems at all. GPS is fantastic (I thought it was working before, but now - ) Is it just me, or does the stock ROM limit the display brightness? I think it actually LOOKS better but YMMV.
It's comforting to know that I now have a phone that will probably never be truly obsolete for the next couple years as long as there are ROM builders out there.
but i tried to root using the one click and recovery and had issues it would tell me permission denied at the end after it reboooted, i used z4 to root and it worked fine, tried to use it again and still same thing, then installed rom manager and then try clockwork, nogo. so i took it all off and will jsut deal with it when it comes ota

I'd agree with you, except that I've had all kinds of issues rooting my Epic, ranging from USB drivers that fail to install, various one click root scripts that error out, a cruddy usb cable from Samsung, and an inability to get Odin to even look at my phone crosseyed.
I'm not brainless ... but nothing about rooting and flashing my phone has been straightforward. After wasting hours wading through (volunteer-written, open source, karmically-blessed) inconsistent instructions, I've lost patience. I just want an official, OTA copy of Froyo that isn't going to brick my phone or waste my time.

I've never had this problem. There must be something wrong and it isn't the one click. Could be your USB cable. Make sure your phone is in debugging mode. The OP is 100% right. Why use any stock ROM? If we do ever get the OTA, our devs will make it better and in about 100 different flavors.

I have been holding out but even my patience is tested...
It was tested even more today trying to find a way to root without a PC (as I don't own a PC... well I have one that runs Win2K and no internet at home... yeah.) I did download z4root but it never got past the first screen...it literally loaded for an 1hr the 1st time and 35mins the second before I got ticked and just uninstalled. I may be new to the android scene (long time winmob user that fled after testing a wp7 craptastic phone) but something just isn't right here X/ I mean really.... I simply want flash (outside of skyfire) and to wirelessly tether without having to pay ANOTHER $30 a month.... ...
So yeah, /rant
Ota can come ANY DAY NOW *looks angrily at the sky*
Epic is as Epic does

yea it was set to debug , its the original cable that came with it. i have not tried it on a diff pc, it could be a vista issue
Good point. But unless Samsung or sprint announce the update is out. Somebody has to be stock just incase they quietly release the update.

yep. Im staying on stock for the simple fact that my phone aint broke why try and fix it lol.
I recently flashed DK28, then converted to ext4 and the bonsai mod. Froyo means I can view more webpages and download the froyo apps from the market place. ADW lancher was slow on 2.2, but lancher pro works fine. Also I wasn't getting great battery life but it's back to normal after I set my screen brightness to automatic. Overall I'm happy with my decision.
I too was one that didn't want to root and I was paying for the sprint hotspot :-\ but once I got the first bill for $130 I quickly youtube how to videos on rooting the epic and never looked back. 2.2 runs great with my only bug being, on some calls out I couldn't hear the other person unless I put it speaker phone. I worked my way around this bug by just hitting the speaker button before every call then quickly hit it again to shut off the speaker. It takes very little effort and I'm happier than ever with my epic and I don't give a rats ass about the OTA 2.2
The reason i first rooted was for wireless tether and to get rid of all the bloatware. After that i found all these awesome root apps like ADFREE and ShootME titatanium back up and many others and i can now not live with out adfree its the best app ever!!
After trying wireless tether it was ok then mobile ap came along and i love it. And for this reason alone im staying stock and honestly this is the first phone that does everything i need and doesnt give me any issues even on stock rom. I did get a custom kernal i flashed a good amount of the 2.1 roms and didnt really care for any of them besides noobnls rom. i mean i like custom roms that are blank of extra bloatware and what not.
But yes i agree dont wait to root, you get so many added benefits to make your phone run fast and get many free apps that are ad supported but because of ad free they are like the real one.
Best decision to root.
And for any reason i need to go back to stock to take the phone in i have all the stock flashables on my sd card so i just flash them and its easy as pie.
One click root never gave me any issues with the samsung cord or with any other cords i have.
I agree, I just got tired of it and rooted and installed a custom ROM (Trulyepic 1.2). It's definitely nice. It's also nice to feel free from the shenanigans of corporations trying to do as little as possible to make money off you while maintaining PR.
I admit, it's a bit scary to do with your phone. I'm lucky in that I've gotten familiar with rooting with my Viewsonic Gtablet, but I have to admit that I was pretty nervous the first time.

Hey dude, i haven't rooted my phone and I have the 2.2. rom on my computer... it was super easy to install. If you want the update without having to root, just pm me if you want it, and ill upload it and send u a link. with instructions.
I did the update and my GPS was fubar. I had to flash back to stock and now I'm scared to flash back to 2.2 for fear of losing GPS again. How is your GPS because I really liked froyo but don't want to jeopardize my GPS.

It will get 2.2 eventually, but only time will tell how long. If we can get kernel source for the I500 phones, we should be able to get you a working kernel, and you may be able to use one of the Fascinate Froyo ROMs then. The biggest problem you'll have is getting the kernel until Samsung releases the OTA or source because of the different video driver used for the screen/ticker/soft keys.

I'm with you on this update lincoln3823. Very frustrating hearing other phones have froyo while a phone released in November is unable to get an update.
I love my phone but I'm going crazy with my RSS not working at all and SNS not working correctly (facebook-yes; twitter-no).
I've even reset my phone and it worked for maybe a couple of days.
Why won't they push an update to froyo??

Well it was said that samsung was charging carriers to release ota firmware updates. I don't know how much it is true but I'm starting to believe the rumors.
Sent from my Rooted space time Continuum w/ 2600mAh battery
If that's true, that really stinks.
Sure wish I new someone who knows the answer to this question.
Heck, I might even pay for it, if the cost (ROI) was worth it. Sure would like to see flash on my phone. Besides froyo has 57% of the market vs. eclair at 31%.
That's crazy considering the Continuum came out in November.
On another note:
I haven't rooted my phone and I noticed your signature as Rooted.
Question? Is it worth rooting? I've read Pros on it but haven't seen any Cons. What's the drawback on it? Updates? Can you revert back to stock if I choose too.

There is only 1 con of rooting. Having to re-root after an OTA update

Yea are no cons every since I rooted my phone. I was able to freeze all of verizon garbage freeing up memory thats usually taken by crap that I don't use eg. skype and you can root and unroot as many times as you like

I hear you dfgged.
So like I've been looking around at forums to root my phone but I have no idea what I'm doing. Really none. Just got my continuum in Jan. I read about OneClick and SuperOneClick (think that's right) and sometimes it works and sometime not.
Can you point me to the "Root for Dummies" section?
Also, what software do I need to backup my phone incase of trouble so I can revert back to stock?

If you want, I could make a tutorial much like my one for CWM. It might take me a bit to edit it though, but better late than never XD

Tutorials are always great. I'd love to see it.
BTW, I rooted my phone using SuperOneClick. It worked perfectly and I've verified it using Root Checker. Now my next step is I want to remove or freeze the bloatware.
I'll direct future non Subject (Are we ever going to get 2.2) related questions to appropriate Threads posting.
I really didn't have an idea about rooting either....seems like I was looking everywhere for rooting information. I tried z4 multiple times with no effect. superoneclick worked. I am running a windows 7 laptop. The phone drivers updated (downloaded from the net) when I plugged in my phone. Then I followed the video instructions on superoneclick site and everything worked fine. continuum w/ verizon. Now I just need to figure out how update to 2.2 I"m on the way!

There is no leaks available yet so the only way to get to 2.2 is to wait, or hope that Adrynalyne can get a leak.
But both imnuts and Adrynalyne are both working on custom roms so there will be some love for the continuum
Continuum
It's now March 29, still no 2.2. Any info?

samsung submitted ec17 for the fascinate to verizon...and apparently that is still in testing...im just gonna assume it ll fail testing like most of their updates and never come out
the fascinate root crowd no longer really cares though as the mesmerize 2.2 officially came out w/ source....
but it seems like continuum updates follow quickly behind fascinate updates...so if hypothetically a fascinate ota occured like this week then it would probably be soon after for the i400
Ok, I was just fine tweaking 2.1 for now until something happened and we finaly got 2.2+, since Eclair isn't really that bad. Now I am starting to see 2.2+ only apps (ones that I want to try mostly) and it's starting to make me less patient. It saddens me since this phone had so much potential with the decent hardware and interesting ticker feature, but it is quickly being left in the dust as the little android that couldn't... /sadpanda
Looks like Samsung has released the Froyo source code for the Fascinate... that could be a good sign... Of course, isn't there a Fascinate on Rogers (Canada) that has had Froyo for awhile?
I know I saw it on android central and I got excited but then again we did get left behind once before

So how do I back up my existing rom. I'd liked to try the non bloated dl17 but want to make sure I can still get back to original if need be.

I really do hate this phone. No matter what I do I have nothing nut problems. I've tried stock and that sucks. Freezing and restarting all the damn time. I tried rooting. Same bullsh*t but it takes me 4+ hours to get my phone running . I spent from 9pm last night until 3am and then 1-4 this afternoon to get my phone running. I couldn't get Liberty to run right. 3g wouldn't work. Went back to prerooted gb and got my internet working again. Went to take a video and my phone freezes. Had to do a battery pull and lost the video which I can't get back. I don't care what anyone says but F*CK android! I've never had so many headaches and frustration in my life! I seriously want to throw this POS on the ground and go back to a regular dinosaur phone. If I do get another smartphone it will be an iphone. My gf has a iphone 3g and she doesn't have HALF of the problems I have. I seriously want to walk onto the Verizon store and smash this phone across the face of the person that sold it to me. $200 for something that I ha e nothing but issues with plus over $100 to use it. I'd be better off flushing that money down the damn toilet!

I had 3 defective iPhones when I used those pieces of garbage. It's called call Verizon and get a new phone.

Lol I found this rant amusing. Any way obviously you have a defective phone. Get it replaced. Quit complaining. Ha ha.

If you guys only went through what I've been going through, it wouldn't be so funny. I've seriously had enough of dealing with problems all the time. I can't just get a new phone because I've had this phone since November. Unless I do an insurance claim. You've all had freezes and restarts before, but you just put up with it like I did until I finally had enough..
lmao. 500k activations per day android and xda dont need u. i have iphone4 and dx. i hate the iphone. some people the iphone suits them better. usually they cant figure out android

Woah, woah! Calm down dude. I have a HTC Wildfire with a development ROM on it which isn't even finished! And I use it daily without any problems. Try more Custom ROMs, sometimes the manufacturer rushes the ROM to hit deadlines, but developers (usually) don't.
But if you REALLY hate your Droid X, get an iPhone or a cheap old phone.

First, have you tried a factory reset? Second, if you've only had the phone since Nov and it's truly defective, take it to VZW and swap it out. Your warranty is a year
My brother had the same issue with his droid x, he just called Verizon I they sent him a replacement phone, he was still under warranty. They actually sent him 3 phones cuz every time they sent him one it was defective. The last phone he got is so far working well. I told my brother when he gets a new phone maybe he should get a htc or samsung.

I've done more factory resets than I can count. I've been having problems with Liberty it's not funny. I'm trying to wait until CM7 is a little more stable. Right now, I'm running prerooted GB because I couldn't get 3g internet working on Liberty v.08 or v.09. The 3g would be there, but it wouldn't connect. When I flashed the prerooted GB .zip, my 3g started working immediately. Then, I tried to email and Twitter jrummy16 to try to get help with the issue, and he hasn't responded. I understand he's a busy man, but you should really deal with issues with your own apps and roms. I wasn't disrespectful or angry in these messages. In fact, I begged him for help. In Liberty toolbox, when you go to update and it tells you after you download the rom that it's going to restart in recovery and flash it, my phone just restarts normally. I did this 10 times with no luck. I had to use bootstrap to do it, and the damn 3g didn't work. I just want a phone that works. It will work for about a month after I flash something and then the problems start. My gf has an iphone 3gs and she hasn't had hardly any problems at all with her phone. The only problems she's had are with some apps not working. Before I got this phone, I went through 4 wildfires because those kept crashing multiple times a day, and 2 Motorola Milestone XT720s for the same reason..
Hater...
I was just wondering if you still breast feed. That may just explain your temper tantrum. If it took you 4+ hours just to root your DX then stop messing with your phone. Only operate your phone based on what the manual says. Enjoy!

I ran my phone stock until the GB OTA. When I had all kinds of problems, I finally rooted and ran Liberty 2.0.1 Froyo. It didn't take me that long to just root it. It took me hours to get it runnig right because of issues with Liberty. It's not my fault Liberty Toolbox has a bug in it and won't restart into recovery. The first time I tried to upgrade from 2.0.1 to GB, my phone locked up at the M logo. I pulled the battery, restarted into recovery, cleared the memory and cache 5 times each, and it still didn't work, so I had to SBF back to froyo, root, then download the prerooted GB file from another source because the one I had was corrupted, flash that, then when I had to manually flash Liberty v.08 THEN v.09, my 3g wouldn't work. I spent about an hour on the phone with customer service just to make sure there wasn't a 3g issue in my area, then I flashed back to GB prerooted, data wipe/clear cache 5 times each time, and I'm still having issues.. There comes a point where after going through all of that bull****, you finally have had enough. When I ran my phone completely stock, I had freezing/reboot issues. When I root, I have issues. No matter what I do, I have issues. You can all clown and I really don't care. Until you go through what I've been through, you won't understand...
Aww didums. Grow up and get some cheese.
Seriously if it was that bad, why didn't you just exchange it? And don't bother giving crap excuses, you are just a dumb ass.
Tits or GTFO!
My invention: The Idiot Meter.
When walking into a phone store, someone should hand you a tablet with a solid test to test your phone/smartphone knowledge, user accessibility and the ability to know how to perform simple self diagnostics/troubleshoot on your device.
Based on your score, you'll get the device that meets your tested IQ, or in most cases and certainly the OPs case, a swift kick in the ass out of the store with a 20% coupon to the nearest Walmart for a self service prepaid Tracphone.
Boy I tell ya, that sure would cut out 1/3 of idiot threads I read on XDA and potentially increase my life expectancy an extra 10 years from not having to deal with idiot customers! ( yes, I work for a major carrier on the sale front lines lol )
With that said, I am at peace lol.

It's sad that you're all resorting to name calling. I worked for Cingular for about 3 years as well doing customer service in a call center. I'm a CNC machinist and program them to cut parts. The last thing I am is an idiot. I'm done defending myself against people who just want to call names and act elitist. Thanks for nothing...

You aren't helping yourself at all. Honestly, you sound as though you're trolling for attention. If you're having 3G connectivity problems (amongst others) where there were none before, then you might have a hardware issue. If you're truly having this many problems with your particular device, exchange the phone. If you aren't willing to do that for whatever reason, you might want to stop posting.
And FWIW, CM7 is solid and is easily the smoothest and most stable ROM that I've had on my DX...including stock. Once you exchange your phone, give it a shot.

Maybe you should just stick with g codes then.
But no really your phone might just be the issue. Try a fresh sbf and then load on cm7. CM7 is more stable then most of the roms out there for dx. If you still have issue sbf back to stock and ask to have it replaced. Claim it reboots every so often for no reason. They will exchange it on that issue alone.

Honestly, I don't need attention from anyone. I was just pissed off and needed to vent. The connectivity problems were Liberty, because once I flashed back to prerooted GB, I was able to connect again. The 3g symbol was up on the screen, but the upload and download arrows weren't flashing at all. Like I said, I can deal with a lot of bull**** before the frustration becomes too much. I've dealt with issues in the past and didn't say anything about it. My phone will work great for about a month or two and then the issues start. Thank you for letting me know that CM7 is now stable enough to use. I wanted to switch over to it because of all of the great things I've heard about the rom, but saw that at the beginning there were a lot of issues with it, so I decided to wait until they worked out the kinks. I think I will start looking for the file and see about flashing over to try it out.. Thanks again..

Thanks. I'm still learning G-code, but I'm proficient in Mazatrol. I ran Mazak lathes for about 4 years, but recently started working at a shop running Haas machines. G-code isn't too hard to leran coming from Mazak. I think I will take your advice and SBF back to Froyo, install the prerooted GB, then flash CM7. I just did all of this night before last, but I guess a fresh sbf after going from Liberty back to GB wouldn't be a bad idea. Some of the problems I've had is with bugs in the files. I've dealt with corrupted files a few times in the past, and it's really frustrating to get that far only to have to sbf and start all over again. Every time I flash or sbf, I always wipe data/cache 4-5 times before booting up normally..
I could exchange the phone, but I would probably end up with a refurbished phone, only to have the same issues again. Can any of you honestly tell me that your phone never freezes or reboots???
