[Q] Car Mode, USB Cable - Milestone 2 General

Hi all,
I have my Milestone 2 fitted into a hard case, so my phone does not fit into Motorola Car dock, I should remove case nay time I use my phone in car. For this reason, i have a Brodit Universal Holsed and a USB cable to charge it.
I would like to modify this USB Cable, in order to "Tell" to the phone, that it is in my car, and so I can use Locale to turn on Bluethoot changhe Brightness and so on.
Do you have an idea on How modify USB cable, in order to tell the phone: "Hey you are in a car"?
Many Thanks

That may be possible. But modifying the USB won't work. It's software based. So find an app!

Hi,
It's a combination of a software and the dock in the car.
When you connect phone to dock in car, the dock told the phone "You are in a Car", so the software on the phone, can change settings.
I would like to made a cable that told my phone "You are in a Car", then Locale on my phone will apply the settings.
Marco

The dock does not activate the "dock settings" off of the cable, it will work if you do not have the cable plugged in. The dock works off a sensor in the Milestone 2, and a magnet I believe. You might need a more powerful magnet to get through the case.
Maybe watch this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dcngGMty_dc (droid and milestone have compatible docks, and I believe the milestone 2 works with the droid dock, I know it works with the Milestone 2 one)

You are right. Depending on the pole of the magnet, the phone opens the car or the clock dock. So just stick a good one in your dock.

I'll go to Brico Center this evening to look for a magnet and I'll try.
Many thanks for your suggestion.
Marco

I got a small magnet from a curtain holder for 2,50 Euros. Now when I dock my phone on car Locale will set all I need.
Many Thanks for your help.

Car docks for original Droid (1) will not work with Droid 2/MM2, but they work the other way, i.e. D2/MM2 dock works with both D2/MM2 and D1/MM1. Multimedia dock works with both 1&2 versions of Droids/MMs.

A.

Have you tried to use one of the scheduling apps like Tasker to set it to start car home under specific conditions?

Hi,
I glued magnet to car dock. I'm using Locale with Car Dock plugin. When I place phone on cardock, Locale will change my settings, because phone is thinking "oh i'm on car dock!!". When i remove phone from car, it came back to original settings. Very powerful with cheeper magnet.

[Q] Keyboard and Mouse for motorola defy

I just came across a video on youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fihLIwIZovY) but i would like to confirm here if any of motorola defy users are using some sort of keyboard and mouse (Bluetooth based HID) ? any market availability
I just bought a BT Keyboard with Micro-Usb Charging port. That way i dont have to carry two power cables.
I will report back when it arrives.

can you send me the links from where did you get it...even when it arrives do share how it works on defy.
I am using my trusty old Nokia SU-8W folding BT keyboard. It needed a "helper" app in 2.1 but runs perfectly in 2.2 without. Seem to be a few on ebay, though if you're in 2.2 I imagine any good BT keyboard might work. Though I would confirm before buying. I am on stock USA t-mo phone, 2.2.1 Has no mouse. Has a slide-out to stand the phone in (similar to the video), but has to be "loaded" from within the phone. ("Initiate pairing from phone"). In texting the return key actually does a "return", not send. It sits up high enough in the built-in stand to use the lower nav keys.
Copy & paste are the only things I'm still trying to sort.
Is there any keyboard in the market that also have mouse (trackpad) support which can be used on defy's browser..!!??
I bough it from ebay, here is the link.
I will report back if it works.
There are small keyboards with trackpads from the same company, too. I dont know if they work but as BT Mouses should work with 2.2 flawlessly i think these devices should work too.
As long as the device works with Android in general it should of course work with the browser too.
I think better use a PC.

second that^^
no need to use them for such 3.7'' screen.
Ah, i forgot to report back.
The keyboard is working with my windows 7 pc but it is not working with my defy.
I get it to connect to the defy and show up as a connected HID device but it wont recognize any keyboard input.
I am searching for a stock rom with bt-keyboard support at the moment...
and "I think better use a PC." is just about the dumbest answer you could give.
Thanks for the update
I found here that the "freedom pro" keyboard works but when I price check, it's over $80, so no way!

Logilink ID0070
Hi,
I bought a Logilink ID0070 bluetooth keyboard and it doesn't work. Neither in CM7, nor in CM9 I can type something on this keyboard. It is paired with my device but nevertheless it didn't want to do something else.
Is there already a solution to this problem?

External Keyboard Defy

Is this possible? I think you can use bluetooth keyboards but it would drain battery too fast, are there mini keyboards for android smartphones? or could I buy a cable that goes from mini usb to usb so I can put an usb keyboard in my phone? the idea is to have a small dock to put my phone in horizontal and with the keyboard write university stuff instead of using paper, then this .doc save it to my dropbox, what do you think any suggestions?
AFAIK your only option is a bluetooth keyboard. Sadly the Defy can't act as a USB host. So you cannot connect a wired keyboard to it.

Currently using my old Nokia SU-8W and it works great. If I have a lot of text there's nothing like an external keyboard. Battery drain not an issue.

Will Different USB keyboard hosts work with each other

Not sure if this is the right topic, but there doesn't seem to be any other place I could put this.
So my brother lost his keyboard USB connector (it's wireless). If I were to go out and buy another one USB connector for the exact same keyboard, would it work? Sounds stupid, I know, but it's worth a try.
Thanks
-Kevin
Straight out of the box, no. In my experience wireless keyboards are paired with their transceivers and have no obvious sync button to pair them to another, there may be a way to do it in software or something which brings me onto:
But where are you going to get another tranceiver from? That would require buying another keyboard in which case just use the new one. Or don't lose USB plugs in the first place, mine stayed plugged into the PC at all times or when in transport was gaffa taped to the keyboard.
Bluetooth keyboards of course don't have this issue. Next keyboard I buy I am intending to be Bluetooth hopefully.

I would say that yes, it should work, provided it was the exact same keyboard.

I have seen 3 of the same model USB wireless keyboard working in one room without interfering. They hadnt been played with either, they were straight out of the box so somehow a keyboard is paired with its included tranceiver.
Thats not to say it can't be paired to another but mine has no obvious way of doing so.

I suspect the BT dongles connect to a certain keyboard BT MAC address. The same thing is true of any BT device; they have to be paired.
No matter what you will always have the issue that you can't buy the adaptor on its own anyway.

That's why I like the hp dongles that can pair with up to five devices...

That's why I like Bluetooth devices where I don't have to pay for a dongle, can't lose it (it's built into my laptops, tablet, phone, and for that matter car), and don't have to give up a USB port to use a wireless peripheral...
If it is a Logitech device you may be able to pair it to a unifying receiver.

Mounting Nexus 7 as media player/navigator in Volkswagen Polo

Hey guys, I know I should post this on a Wolkswagen forum or something like that, but I think I won't receive replies. You are "the pro's"
I'm about to buy a 2008 Wolkswagen Polo 1.6 sportline.
It mounts stock 2din radio, but I'd like to remove it and mount a tablet like Nexus 7.
Do you know if it is possible and which is the easiest way?
I was thinking about disassembly stock radio and use his body for hold the tablet that is placed in a cover.
That looks like pretty easy, but will the tablet fit there?
How can I connect power supply, audio out and an female USB cable for easily update my track list, my ROM or watch a film through USB device?
Could I use a Bluetooth GPS for use it with gMaps / Waze , right?

As long as your nexus 7 is 3G you could use the navigation.
You can do it but it's going to require a lot of custom work. I would forget about trying to use the stock radio as a holder, you will want to build a custom mount out of fiberglass and metal or MDF. Fiberglass is easy to work with for stuff like that, and when its finished you can sand and paint and clearcoat it and it will look as good as the exterior paint.
You will want to use a kernel like Faux's with USB OTG which allows a Y OTG adapter to be plugged in so you can charge while you have an external storage drive connected, or use a USB mouse and keyboard on one plug while charging the other, etc.
The tricky part is going to be if you want to use the Nexus 7 as your receiver. I'm thinking your best bet is to go with a nice receiver/head unit with bluetooth, and mount it somewhere hidden if you don't want to see it.
The Pioneer App Radio and other similar head units will work with a lot of apps from the play store to communicate apps with your receiver. and vice versa. You could mount it in the dash also, or you could mount a smaller radio without the LCD and everything under the seat or in the glove compartment, and either use the remote or hack the nexus 7/USB to be hardwired.
Check out this guys link. Obviously those statements up above are just suggestions/ideas to get the thinking process started
http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Car/AppRadio/AppRadio+2+(SPH-DA100)
I used to have an installation business and build a lot of custom interiors for my own show trucks and for friends and fellow club members, stuff like that. I don't know about the inside of a Nexus 7 and hard wiring it to work with the "brain" of a nice head unit to control the inputs and outputs and tuner and all that business.
But feel free to send me a PM if you want to discuss things I'm familiar with or just brainstorm.

Help! No sound through car dock with 4.2.2

I just unlocked/rooted and have been playing around with a few roms to see which I like best. One HUGE issue for me is none of the 4.2.2 roms allow audio to come through the car dock usb cable. I know google ditched the car mode in 4.2.2 and thats ok by me (lots of alternatives) but I just bought a car dock so I wouldn't have to plug multiple cables in when getting into the car.
Anyone know a workaround or any ROMS that have it working? Or, any 4.2.1 ROMS out there worth flashing?
Thanks
Andy
Can anyone confirm any 4.2.2 ROMS that have working audio through the motorola car dock? A few folks claim there are but no one will confirm exactly what ROM.

I take back what I said. These were guys talking about their stock ROMs on the HD. However this was just posted a few days ago: http://www.xda-developers.com/android/restore-car-dock-mode-on-android-4-2/
Thanks for the link but this just enables the car dock trigger to be activated and allows the home key to bind to the car dock home screen when pressed. I have had no problem with a 4.2.2 rom and a market car dock app being triggered when placed in the car dock. Once in the car dock though the audio does not flow through the usb cable (special cable that is split on the charging end with a headphone jack so only one cable goes into the dock)
The audio through usb car dock issue is a little deeper.
I will keep searching but thanks for your efforts.
Tried the new beanstalk but still a no go for sound through the dock. Phone kind of freezes when you try to play something while docked too like most cm 10.1 ROMs.
Silk hoping someone figures this out.

TC: Does this cable setup you have work on the stock ROM? I know mt Razr M car dock came with a normal USB cable and a separate headphone cable. I was under the impression that the Razr M did not allow audio over USB like some of the other models do.
Could be wrong, just want to see what's going on here it it is capable.

Yes, it works on stock ROM as well as CleanRom. The cable that came with my dock (some docks don't come with it) has on one end the micro usb and on the other a regular sized USB and a headphone female split off of it. It is really convenient because then you just dock the phone and both are connected.
Andy
Still searching for a 4.2 ROM with working car dock audio. Tried a few that some said had it working (BeanStalk, CM official nightlies) as well as most others.
Come on, someone has to have fixed this. Can anyone confirm any 4.2 or later roms that have fixed this?
I heard it's been fixed on some other 4.2 phones (s3 I think...)
Basically Google removed the code from the kernel, so a new kernel would be required to fix it.

I haven't seen any or personally tried any. However, I was just looking through the thread about the XPosed Framework modules. There's a module in there that is for allowing car dock on 4.2.2. I don't know if it works, but it never hurts to try. You'll need to install the Xposed Framework installer app here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1574401 . Then use the modules from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2327541 .
If it works, come back and let us know.

Don't think that is going to do it as I have no problems with Car Dock Mode being enabled (the phone recognizing it is in a dock). I will try it if I get the time though.

Ah, gotcha. I didn't read too much into what the module actually did.
