I tried so much. I used NTFS mount, Drive mount to mount my 500GB external hard drive. I've tried NTFS, fat32, exFat, ext3 but no hope. It used to be able to read NTFS using drive mount, but now it doesn't work for some reason. Can anyone help?
Using Taboonay 1.1 with Thor's Custom kernel. Rooted and everything.
When I first turn on the Drive Mount app and try mounting, it says "Success" but it doesn't actually mount it, which is pretty annoying.
Seems to be my hardrive. it was 100 USD... however there was a point when it worked
ive tried to use usb hdd's but they dont seem to work. I have the ones that can be plugged in to an actual power jack but the tablet doesnt read. need help too
If it's the hard drive, then it wont work on your pc too. I have no problems connecting my ntfs hdd and playing videos from it (not that mobo manages to play 720p mkvs nicely...)

Should be fast to troubleshoot - plug the hdd into a desktop/laptop with a known good USB port. If system reads the drive, then the problem is with the tab, if it does not then the drive is probably bad or corrupted.
When you format the drive I assume you are doing a full format and not just a quick format?
I have heard of people having issues with getting very large hdd's working on the Iconia - 500gb should be supported, though. I use drive mount to mount my 750gb ntfs hdd and have never had a issue.

hi ....
as title
anyone else got this problem ?
my external HDD has 280gb of fat32 and 40gb of ntfs
Which partition is first? If the fat32 is first, I would expect it to automount. The tablet doesn't support NTFS out of the box. Search these forums for NTFSMOUNT. That will allow you to mount the ntfs partition. If your fat32 is not first, you may need to mount it manually.

the fat32 is first, then the ntfs
i tried ntfs mount, it wont show the device at all
iconia wont detect my hdd at all
actually does anyone here tried hdd with partitions ?
That's odd that it doesn't pick up the first partition. Even a drive that isn't split has partitions on it.

My Cruzer USB drive has a cdfs and fat32 partitiin, the main (fat32) partition is fine but won't show the cdfs volume.
I suspect the mount scripts are written for single volume drives or primary partition only.
Could it be that it's a Dynamic drive instead of a Basic Drive? When you connect it to windows and look at the drive partition, it should say in the left border of the drive. Not sure if Android can read a Dynamic drive. Worth a check..

Vereynn, I'm assuming it's a U3 Sandisk Cruzer. They make an app(Sandisk does) that removes U3 from it. U3 is notoriously insecure and they dropped support for it anyway. If you want it or need help finding it I can point you in that direction. Only thing I could think of is maybe the Iconia doesn't support GPT partitions, only MBR/MSDOS style. Why a 320GB USB drive would have that I don't know though, unless you specifically set it up like that with parted or something.

how can i check ?
I'm pretty sure OS X doesn't support dynamic drives, so I doubt he has one.

Yep, it's a U3 device. I don't actually use it for much, I got one of the Costco 4packs a while back and they all just sit around my desk now, but it's the only external drive I have with multiple volumes on it for testing So thanks but no real reason for killing the U3 "CD" partition, it's heading for a landfill eventually
My normal go-to USB stick is a 16GB Toshiba with a single FAT32 volume.
One of these days I'll put one of my HP laptop drives back into its DIY external case and see what the Iconia thinks about it. 3 partitions I think (one for BIOS, one NTFS for normal use and a FAT32 for recovery images)
hi...
as the title...
who all are succeded in connecting usb external hdd to iconia ?
cause i tried with two, and booth are not recognized
one is pendrive sense 320gb, second is wd 250gb
all you who can connect, whats your hdd??
fyi, i can connect card reader and usb thumb drive
UPDATE
OKEY..
so i tried connecting my hdd through a powered usb hub, and still no luck,
i tried connect it with a Y cable, one to iconia and onte to powered hub, also no luck ...
is there any other way to try ? tried every thing from usb mount all, ntfs mount, charging while plugging , usb powered, new HDD, fat32 formatted , ntfs HDD and all in vain...
if not then, i am sure my device is defective of something....
How were they formatted? At those sizes, I'm going to guess they were formatted to NTFS which Android cannot read natively. There is, however, a thread in the Development section which includes a driver to enable NTFS support on the A500.

so i dont root ,and still wait.
well ,if i get the update of 3.1 ,i will come back and reply .
i have a 2T hdd, buffalo.
Okey... So now i have tried at least 6 different hdd and all failed...
I start to think ut is my hardware or rom problem?
Any solution ?
When i first connected a hdd i also thought it didn't work. When i looked at mnt/usb_storage.........no filelist. But when i got a cup of coffee and looked again the filelist was there. Apparantly the Acer needs a time to scan the HDD which can be long when it is large. So l'lle patience.

Are you sure you have power (external) going into your HD? I tried a WD portable and it wouldn't be read by the A500 until I connected it to an external power supply. Then I could read it without any problems.

Guy's....just download (HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool) to format your HD's to fat32. I did my 250 & 500GB HD and it work just find. Windows just don't format right...that's why I don't use windows to format my HD's. If you have Linux use Gparted.
I have
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14129262&postcount=8
I also have a 250gb that I can't get to read but then it needs dual-powered cable to be read on my laptop so I expected that. But my 320gb Buffalo, my 32gb Patriot and my 80gb Maxtor read just fine. All are NTFS. I have a 160gb from work that I will try tomorrow.
Connect it to windows and pull up the disk administrator (where you create partitions) and see if the disk is basic or dynamic? Just a hunch... have you tried different cables? And finally I want to be sure you are plugging it into the full sized USB pert and not the micro USB.

i am using mac, not windows, my hdd connect fine to mac, how to do this on mac?
not only different cables, yesterday i went to an it mall, there i tried almost 5 different 500gb hdd 2.5 inch, all failed, all have fat32 format, cause i checked them on my mac beforehand
yeah, of course i connect it to the usb 2.0 port..
this is what i dont understand, everyones hdd work fine in the iconia, why my iconia just cant read?
mine don't work either. I have a 1 TB western digital hard drive.
i use ntfs mount, first time install that ntfs mount apk...cant read my hdd but aftter reboot my iconia all partition on hdd can read and walk normal like on my laptop
I'm in Jakarta, so I don't think it can be a rom thing. Are you using NTFS mount, or just trying to plug the HDD into your tab and use the built-in software? Try this and it should fix the problem.
Have a old 60gb external USB 2.0 hdd - formatted fresh using FAT - drive tests fine.
Cannot seem to get my a500 to use it - tried the "drive mount" tool from the market and I see my hdd under unmounted devices, when I try to mount it I get "driver for sda1 failed to load".
Running 3.1 early release, rooted.
One more question I had about USB - can I plug a powered or unpowered USB hub into the a500 and use both external keyboard / mouse at the same time?
(Edit: issue resolved. For some reason a full format using FAT produced a bad volume, whereas a full ntfs format worked like a charm. Next step: powered USB hub and I am gonna be so happy)
old drive
Is it in a old drive bay.some of the older external drive bays take alot of power. If it has a external power adaptor you might have to use it pluged iin. And trybto have your tablet pouted into power outlet as well.it helps with my 3.5 500 gig drive bay
Check
Yup - it's a older model and requires external power, which was plugged in - as well as the tab.
Formatted drive using Windows 7 - FAT was not a option, only exFAT or ntfs. Did full format.
Mount utility sees the drive - just cannot mount it. Might try a reformat from a older system and see if that helps.

Try formatting to ntfs, then use this to mount it. Works with my 750 gb external drive and it shows up under memory in settings. Also, yes both types of USB hubs, should work.
OK so I'm new and I can't post a link to Mega upload, but I can PM you the link if you like.

I am doing this on a rooted a500 running the early release of 3.1 - just used my Windows 7 desktop to format the drive as NTFS - using a free software package from market called "drive mount" which can mount lots of different devices. If you are not rooted - pretty sure the USB drive has to be FAT file system for it to work.
Sure, you can use Linux for the format - plenty of freeware tools for Linux that will do this for you in a nice GUI setting
I was planning pn using the gparted partition manager on puppy linux..........is it good enough?......and will my hdd suffer memory loss when I format it to fat32??

Generally reformatting a drive will delete all data on said drive. Would recommend backing it all up, formatting it - and restoring it.
Do you have root on your Iconica? If so - you should be able to mount the drive pretty much regardless of what format it is in - what type of file system is it?
I haven't rooted my device......and I meant free memory loss.....would the hdd size decrease??

ok guys i've got a minor inconvenience with my nexus 7.
first of all my device:
i'm running paranoidandroid 2.23 with clemsyn's power saving kernel. which i can recommend because it works like a charm and uses very little battery.
but now to my problem:
i'm using a 60gb external HDD with an OTG cable connected to my nexus 7. the problem now is, that the hdd is formatted in ntfs, which i won't change. everytime i connect my hdd to the nexus 7 the android system automatically mounts the partition READONLY as /storage/usbdisk.
i'm using "Paragon NTFS & HFS+" to mount ntfs partitions as R/W, which does of course not work since the partition is altready mounted by the android system. so now i always have to manually unmount the partition in android settings and then remount it with Paragon NTFS & HFS+.
my question now is: is there any way to disable the android system's automount of external usb mass storage device?
i know it's just a small inconvenience but it really gets to me, there must be some way around this hassle.
thx in advance
uuzi
Sorry for not having an answer, just wanted to +1 this. I could really use this solution as well.
Seriously need an answer. I tried deleting the last line of vold.fstab, which worked, but then my music players couldn't see anything, even if the drive was mounted with Paragon or OTG Helper

Anyone knows something about?
I've same problem. Anyone can help ? Plz
You guys are patient lol.
I'd really like to know as well
I can no longer mount USB Hard Drive after Marshmallow 3.0 update? My hard drive is this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Backup-Portable-External-STDR2000103/dp/B00FRHTTJE/
And it worked fine before the update?
I've even tried installing StickMount to mount the USB HDD and that didn't work either?
When I plug the HDD into the Shield, ES File Explorer pops up and it shows the drive but when I click it, it says: "failed to open the file"
The USB HDD doesn't even want to show in the SETTINGS > STORAGE section either.
It's formatted in exFat.
Update: I've reformatted the drive to NTFS. Now, the drive will mount but it's "unwritable"?
Any ideas?

Looks like a similar issue, not being able to WRITE to an NTFS formatted drive, seems to be a stock issue, not related
to custom firmware, theres "talk" that nvidia is aware of the problem and "talk" that it'll be fixed "soon"........we'll see
Assuming this is the same issue

That's sounds like it! Yea, this is my experience:
exFAT: Can't mount / read / write
NTFS: Can mount / can read / cannot write
FAT32: Can mount / can read / can write
Can someone else please test and confirm these findings?
