I can no longer mount USB Hard Drive after Marshmallow 3.0 update? My hard drive is this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Backup-Portable-External-STDR2000103/dp/B00FRHTTJE/
And it worked fine before the update?
I've even tried installing StickMount to mount the USB HDD and that didn't work either?
When I plug the HDD into the Shield, ES File Explorer pops up and it shows the drive but when I click it, it says: "failed to open the file"
The USB HDD doesn't even want to show in the SETTINGS > STORAGE section either.
It's formatted in exFat.
Update: I've reformatted the drive to NTFS. Now, the drive will mount but it's "unwritable"?
Any ideas?

Looks like a similar issue, not being able to WRITE to an NTFS formatted drive, seems to be a stock issue, not related
to custom firmware, theres "talk" that nvidia is aware of the problem and "talk" that it'll be fixed "soon"........we'll see
Assuming this is the same issue

That's sounds like it! Yea, this is my experience:
exFAT: Can't mount / read / write
NTFS: Can mount / can read / cannot write
FAT32: Can mount / can read / can write
Can someone else please test and confirm these findings?

I tried so much. I used NTFS mount, Drive mount to mount my 500GB external hard drive. I've tried NTFS, fat32, exFat, ext3 but no hope. It used to be able to read NTFS using drive mount, but now it doesn't work for some reason. Can anyone help?
Using Taboonay 1.1 with Thor's Custom kernel. Rooted and everything.
When I first turn on the Drive Mount app and try mounting, it says "Success" but it doesn't actually mount it, which is pretty annoying.
Seems to be my hardrive. it was 100 USD... however there was a point when it worked
ive tried to use usb hdd's but they dont seem to work. I have the ones that can be plugged in to an actual power jack but the tablet doesnt read. need help too
If it's the hard drive, then it wont work on your pc too. I have no problems connecting my ntfs hdd and playing videos from it (not that mobo manages to play 720p mkvs nicely...)

Should be fast to troubleshoot - plug the hdd into a desktop/laptop with a known good USB port. If system reads the drive, then the problem is with the tab, if it does not then the drive is probably bad or corrupted.
When you format the drive I assume you are doing a full format and not just a quick format?
I have heard of people having issues with getting very large hdd's working on the Iconia - 500gb should be supported, though. I use drive mount to mount my 750gb ntfs hdd and have never had a issue.
ok guys i've got a minor inconvenience with my nexus 7.
first of all my device:
i'm running paranoidandroid 2.23 with clemsyn's power saving kernel. which i can recommend because it works like a charm and uses very little battery.
but now to my problem:
i'm using a 60gb external HDD with an OTG cable connected to my nexus 7. the problem now is, that the hdd is formatted in ntfs, which i won't change. everytime i connect my hdd to the nexus 7 the android system automatically mounts the partition READONLY as /storage/usbdisk.
i'm using "Paragon NTFS & HFS+" to mount ntfs partitions as R/W, which does of course not work since the partition is altready mounted by the android system. so now i always have to manually unmount the partition in android settings and then remount it with Paragon NTFS & HFS+.
my question now is: is there any way to disable the android system's automount of external usb mass storage device?
i know it's just a small inconvenience but it really gets to me, there must be some way around this hassle.
thx in advance
uuzi
Sorry for not having an answer, just wanted to +1 this. I could really use this solution as well.
Seriously need an answer. I tried deleting the last line of vold.fstab, which worked, but then my music players couldn't see anything, even if the drive was mounted with Paragon or OTG Helper

You guys are patient lol.

Hi guys,
I'm getting tired of not being able to transfer files from my Nexus 7 [rooted] to a USB flash drive. I have Nexus Media Importer software installed, but it will only allow me to transfer files from the FlashDrive to the Tablet but not the other way...it's just plain dumb.
I usually download stuff via torrent to my Tablet and then distribute it to my friends, but when the files are over 4gb, bluetooth is way to slow and forget about the PC option, I don't have any PC to use...so don't tell me to transfer to a PC and then to the flash drive...
Any ideas?
EDIT: Also tried Stick Mount y USB Host Controller :/ NO LUCK!
Perhaps dumb questions, but since you didn't mention these details, everybody who reads your post is forced to guess.
1) Did you check the mount points (in each case) to see whether they were read-write (rw) or read-only (ro) ?
2) Should we assume that the USB stick only has a single partition, and that it is formatted in a FAT32 fashion? Or something else? What device/OS did you use to format the USB key to begin with?
If you are using any file system excepting FATx, the kernel you are using is also important - and you also failed to mention that.
BTW, I have successfully written large-ish files TO a FAT32 USB key on a OTG cable mounted via StickMount with a lightly-rooted stock N7 (essentially a stock ROM and stock kernel). "Large-ish" in this case is about 2.5 GB. (FAT filesystems are not capable of writing individual files larger than 4GB)
cheers

No dumb questions at all, I just started this thread really quick because I am at work and can't be 'on the internet' for too long.
1) I just checked and Nexus Media Importer says 'read only', I haven't seen that :/ (that's dumb)
2) The owner of the USB Stick tells me he formatted it with Windows 7 but never changed the format, it's FAT32 since he bought it. The file I attempt to transfer is 4.1Gb...
About the kernel and ROM, both stock and ROOTED.
The owner of the USB Stick tells me that he recently used it to boot Win7 and install it on a friend's PC and maybe that's why it is on 'read only'. I've checked for the usual 'lock' switch but it doesn't have one...so that must be why. Don't you think?
Also, I could never use StickMount..it just times out attempting to mount :/
EDIT: One more thing, I downloaded 'USB Host Controller' (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1468531). I attempted to mount at /mnt/sdext and many other points but none of them worked...I'm using ES file explorer to look for the mount point but it doesn't exist.

Well, the name of the app includes the word "importer". That seems to imply only one direction, but I've never used the app so I don't know.

No matter how you mount a FAT32 filesystem, you will not be able to write a file to it which is greater than 4,294,967,295 bytes in length (2^32 - 1).
Apparently there is something called "exFAT" that is intended for large flash devices, but it seems to be not ready for prime time with Android yet. (Search titles here on XDA for "exFAT"). Also, the Wikipedia page for exFAT says that it is patent-encumbered. That's a deal-breaker for Android I suspect.

Hard to say. Re-format it in windows and try again.
Thanks a lot Mr!
I'm gonna use some other app just to try to get it done, with a 'smaller' file. And regarding the USB Stick, let's just leave that behind...I can mount NTFS systems and give my friend the files in a Ext-HDD
Luckily there is always another option
How do I mount an external USB stick? I thought it was under /mnt/usbdisk0, but it's apparently not. I can access this folder and create folders in it fine, but it's still there, and I can manipulate files on it even after I unplug the drive. Also, accessing this directory does not power on the USB light. How do I access external USB drives in OmniROM?
StickMount is one mounting tool that seems to work well.

I tried StickMount, but it didn't do anything on my device. I have the drive formatted in FAT32, so it should be readable on anything. I tried plugging it into my wife's tablet, and it works fine there. I just can't seem to get it to work on my phone.
Hello.
I use my nexus player as Kodi player
I have upgraded to android 6.0.
When y connect a USB memory stick formated in NTFS or ExFAT, android didnt mount the file system, I can only format the USB stick.
With Fat32 usb memory stick, Android mount the file system and I can access the files (/STORAGE/XXXXX).
But with the fat32 system, i can't copy file > 4 Go (big MKV video) on the memory stick (fat32 limitation).
Can you help me ?
Thanks, and sorry for my bad english.
I have run into the same issue. Unfortunately it doesn't seem like anyone has built an ASOP Marshmallow 6.0 kernel with ntfs or exfat enabled. One option is to downgrade to 5.1.1 and use Kernelfox's kernel and another option possibly is to be install CM 12.1 rom.
I found this issue annoying as well... I finally just plugged the USB stick into my router and load my large .mkv files from there... but you'd think android would support ntfs sticks... oh well.
root
install stickmount
that is the only way i know for sure to do it. i have an external drive connected directly and play large 20gb plus mkv rips doing it this way. there is a file you must install on the root but just read all the instructions in the stickmount description in the store

Does this work on 6.0? I currently have two 1TB drives on 5.1.1. I couldn't get them to work on 6.0 when it first came out.

yes, it definitely works on 6.0
you need to make sure you follow the instructions for the file that needs to be installed with stickmount. all the instructions are in the stickmount description in the store.

Yes sir. I installed 6.0.1, rooted and installed Stickmount. Everything works. The only thing different from Android 5.1 is when I plug my hard drives in, I have to go into ES File Explorer and unmount both drives, because of Android 6.0's built in OTG support. Then I can go into Stickmount and mount the drives as usual. It adds an extra step, but I think it's worth it because Android 6.0 looks much smoother than 5.1 did.
Edit: I've also found out in the past that things go smoother if you unmount drives in stickmount before you take out or plug in another drive.
Edit2: Also, my drives are NTFS formatted. Stickmount asks you to download 2 files when you first open it. I suspect these are the NTFS and EXFAT compatibility files, because I've never had a problem with NTFS drives.

Is there anyway to automate the unmount/mount? I'll be stetting this up for someone else, and don't want to redo it everytime he resets the device.

Not that I know of
I know that it's too much later but after suffering the inability to mount neither exFAT nor NTFS in stock MM in my Idol 3, i leave the program that mounts successfully both file systems, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.paragon.tcplugins_ntfs_ro
It's weird but in LP i could mount exFAT file systems without any external program and after upgrading to MM it's not possible, sometimes AOSP gets worse. Anyway, before that i used to make use of this app to mount NTFS and still work in MM, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.paragon.mounter
